The latest New York Times/CBS poll has Sen. Barack Obama leading Sen. Hillary Clinton nationally -- 50%-38%.

But Rev. Jeremiah Wright lingers.

The Times reports that "nearly half of the voters surveyed, and a substantial part of the Democrats" said that Obama condemned and distanced himself from Wright "because he thought it would help him politically, rather than because he had serious disagreements with his former pastor. The broader effect of the controversy on Mr. Obama’s candidacy among Democratic primary voters was less clear in the poll, but enough of them expressed qualms about Mr. Obama’s relationship with Mr. Wright to suggest it could sway a relatively small but potentially important group of voters in the remaining primaries."

Even worse news for Obama comes in the free newspaper outside his hotel door this morning.

In the latest USA Today/Gallup poll Obama goes from 10 points up two weeks ago to seven points behind.

In February Democrats and those who leaned Democrats thought Obama -- by 33 points -- was more likely to beat Sen. John McCain in November. Clinton now leads in that category by five points.

Other poll findings:

"One in four Americans who are following the controversy say their 'best guess' is that Obama agrees with Wright's views, even though the senator has said repeatedly he finds them offensive and wrong. Obama has lost the 8-point advantage he held over Clinton in February as someone who 'shares your values.' Clinton has a 5-point edge among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents."

The rare good news: His favorable/unfavorable ratings are still better than Clinton's -- 58%-37% compared to Clinton's 52%-45%. And he leads Clinton by 14 percentage points as honest and trustworthy.

It seems unlikely that America will trust the care of country to someone who is a rookie and has so many ongoing revelations surfacing. I still find it hard to believe that he did not agree with the statements of preacher Wright until it became politically dangerous. I so wanted to see a qualified black become president, but not Obama now; perhaps later after he has matured and joins the mainstream of America and understands the Constitution and our Republic better.

Yes, OBAMA may be a little more honest than Hillary but he is not dependable. He is willing throw anyone, anything under the bus for his career. He has no record in leadership and making sound judgment.

If Washington is a rookie camp, he may be rookie of the year but definitely not the best around.

Posted by: John_Lai | May 6, 2008 9:16:38 AM

Bad Methodology.

"Did Rev. Wright affect your perceptions of Barack Obama?"

"Who do you want to be President?"

What a stupid question to ask while polling for Presidency.

One must wonder why he sat in this church for nearly 20 years, contributed thousands of dollars and used the members in his campaign then denounce the pastor. He used the Rev and the church for political gain and then flushed him like used T-paper for the same reason. To me, that make Obama a hypocrite. And remember, terrorist groups support him. He certainly is dishonest to the core. Go, Clinton

"Anytime the gas tax has been alleviated..the oil companies took a couple of days and then were back up to the same level. This is a horrible solution..."

It's not a solution. It's a start. This will be a long slog against very powerful interests to get relief for people who have NO ONE to fight for them now.

Carville is right: a president needs a pair before stepping up.

I don't trust any polls even though this favors my candidate. If Obama does not win N.C. by 20 points I think he has a hugh problem. N.C. 30% black and a hugh university population he should win in a landslide.

I don't know how you take a 50-38 THUMPING and turn that into bad news!!!

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

I don't know what the point of NY Times' observation regarding the rest of the primaries. The rest of the primaries do not matter. The issue is over! It has always been in the press' interest and the interests of the so-called media pundits to make this a "close" race. It's in their interest to have it drag on and on. They refuse to enlighten readers on the facts. If they did, they'd have nothing to do!!!

Posted by: Adrian Millet | May 5, 2008 1:04:37 PM

I have never been polled I am a registered democrat and have been for years but I think we should all lie to the people taking polls because they are owned by the MSM so they can have a greater say in who is president the polls are all over the place how can you be in front and nothing happen and the next day lose all your gains makes me wonder if are elections are real.

Posted by: Bishop | May 5, 2008 12:25:50 PM

The responses about Obama's motivation regarding Wright in that NYT/CBS poll do not connect with every other poll out there. Clearly, the black sample was overrepresented. Why do you think no data was shown about that?

Posted by: geevill | May 5, 2008 11:35:14 AM

Obama is damaged goods. Gray hairs popping up, looking very tired, angry, bored...not as cocky as he was a few weeks ago.

Michelle wears a constant frown and looks ready to explode at any moment. Trying to be nice all the time is killing her.

More controversy, more debates, more of Rev.Wright...It is just the beginning.

Posted by: cindy in nc | May 5, 2008 11:22:33 AM

The Zogby poll had it right in PA...

Posted by: Vanessa | May 5, 2008 11:06:23 AM

Does anybody trust NYT polls? Look at what every other poll says, except of course for Zogby's polls who is an Obama superdelegate.

Posted by: Earnest | May 5, 2008 11:03:40 AM

I have only recently begun to read the comments made on the various political blogs. Reading them answers the question that I have had for the past seven years. How could the people of this country possibly have elected a "faux pas" like Bush? It's clear to me that there are just too many stupid Democrats. Look at how many are willing to be made fools of by Hillary Clinton while she plays the same game that Bush and his co-horts played, in order to be elected.

Posted by: Saminfla46 | May 5, 2008 10:59:44 AM

I want big change in D.C. What I want is a dramatic reversal of the disastrous Bush reign, I want to see these huge problems we're facing fixed, I want to see competency and intelligence in the White House. I want to be able to relax knowing that a tough, smart, substantive person is in charge who can do the job and lift all Americans.
GO HILLARY!!

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 5, 2008 10:59:07 AM

It is increasingly obvious to me that the NYTimes polls are outliers from the rest of the national polling. The question is, why? What is their interest in propping Obama up so that he appears stronger than all the other polls show him to be at this point? Are questions being asked in such a way as to try and "game" the poll of polls?

Posted by: commonsensenj | May 5, 2008 10:56:51 AM

The NYT/CBS did not contain ANY demographic information, so please stop trying to make this a racial issue. The total sample size was 671 total resondents, with 283 being the total number of Democratic primary voters! Reading is fundamental!

Posted by: Roxanne | May 5, 2008 10:54:51 AM

Go OBAMA all the way...The Voice of this woman can only tell me one thing.. a liar a liar and a liar..we cant afford to have this kind of person in the white house. The old times with the Oldies in power are over ..clear up for the youngs!

Posted by: Jeremy | May 5, 2008 10:51:17 AM

If people think the government shouldn't give a tax break to average people on gas because it's only "small change" $30 a month or so, then please vote for Obama. If people think that Iran is a peaceful nation with reasonable leadership that doesn't need to know exactly how we would respond if they used nuclear weapons, then please vote for Obama.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 5, 2008 10:46:42 AM

If all of the primaries could be re-done WITH the knowledge that we have now of Obama and Rev. Wright the outcome would be drastically different. Hillary would be the candidate already.

If the Democratic Party wants a re-play of the McGovern disaster, they'll get it - if Obama is chosen as the candidate.

It's either Hillary or McCain in '08

Posted by: SM | May 5, 2008 10:43:46 AM

John McCain's best days are behind him!

Obama all the way!

Posted by: Lookup | May 5, 2008 10:40:53 AM

and questioner

she got healthcare for these children ...take a look at the early formation of those policies...

she has also killed the healthcare chance for many with her back door, overwhelming, and unpassable plans.

She takes credit for the s-chip that she didn't want initially... it was somebody else who made that happen.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:39:25 AM

Yep...these distrations will keep voters stuck on stupid. Just what the republicans and hillary and bill clinton want.

lol we obviously need to fix our education system.

Posted by: LA in Indiana | May 5, 2008 10:39:16 AM

The NYT/CBS Poll actually shows Clinton leading Obama among Democrats. It is only when they cut it down to only 283 "likely" voters that Obama has this, excuse me for laughing, 12 point lead. It looks like the black vote was heavily overweighted in this small sample. One thing stands out though -40% of Clinton supporters said they would NOT vote for Obama.

Posted by: geevill | May 5, 2008 10:37:16 AM

Barack voted for it on a state level when it was a new idea...

it didn't work...clinton knows it does not work and she is using people's fears and needs to win her candidacy...

not only that she can't push through a windfall profits tax within the next year or two...a tax which she has already allocated those funds somewhere else...

she is lying to the people of this country again...

and that is disgusting...

not to mention putting america's roads and bridges at greater risk... all in the name of her being President ...

she is not about the voters until fighting for their needs helps her career. If this primary has shown us anything over and over she is Marie Antoinette. Calls the other guy the elitist all the while using voters problems just to win her election.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:36:05 AM

Obama is crumbling. Unelectable. Please get over the infatuation and let's get back to the real fighters who know how to lead.

Obama voted for this same relief three times in Illinois.

Hillary, has already initited legislation for protection from the oil companies..... whose CEO's amass millions each year (or is it billions?)

In any case, why do you find it revolting when somebody other than barry
votes for the very same thing..... Is it because he never goes further than opening his mouth?

As for Hillary's Health Care Program, it's the only one that can be called "Universal" and unless you are a psychic you cannot state as fact that it will not succeed.

You neglect to mention that she has already gotten health care for 6,000,000 children.

What has Obama accomplished aside from empty promises and the record of a deceitful senator in Illinois. (Alice Palmer, Rezko, earmark perks winding up at Michelle's place of employment.... ad nauseum).

These are some of the reasons I wil vote for Hillary!

Posted by: questioner | May 5, 2008 10:28:02 AM

geevil now your just making stuff up...Obama refuted Wright.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:27:20 AM

Hopesprings52

You need to marry Pastor Wright ...that's all you can talk about. How about national security being compromised by one woman's stupi obliterate and massive retaliation with nuclear war comments...

or an economic proposal that is first ...not based in fact... and second can't find a SINGLE economist to back it up.

who cares about a freakin pastor when she keeps sending the country into a worse situation all in the name of her being president.

Let us know where you and Pastor Wright are registered.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:26:06 AM

Obama supported whatever Wright said-until he said that Obama was a politcian saying things because he had to.THAT was the deal breaker. Everyone else whites, Jews, women, were fair game for Wright, but not Obama.

Posted by: geevill | May 5, 2008 10:24:32 AM

Obama has once again proven that Teflon quality

He has successfully placed Rev.Wright behind him

The polls are favoring him again

He leads by 4 in the Gallup Poll

and by 1 in the Rasmussen Poll

He's regaining his lead

Posted by: Vanessa | May 5, 2008 10:23:40 AM

Everything Wright said at his press conference had been reported by the press for some time, so how could Obama have been shocked by what he heard?? Obviously it was the fact that Wright confirmed these horrific statements in a very public, high profile venue and caused major political damage that finally got Obama to fully acknowledge and speak out against them.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 5, 2008 10:20:47 AM

the only thing you all can argue on his some pastor ...who cares ...when Hillary in the past two weeks alone has screwed up on Nuclear obliteration (throwing the terrorists a new very effective recruiting tool and Iran a new argument to be allowed to have nuclear development and "defense" with her stupidity and greed in wanting this nomination...and then got caught in promising something that will make our economy and global warning worse...and chances are could damge our infrastructure just at a time when it needs to be fixed)...

but keep saying "wright" and "pastor" over and over...that helps the country.

Get this woman away from any part of our nation's management.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:20:16 AM

Wow Hillary's brothers will sure make the Whitehouse a respectable place:

Former President Bill Clinton's brother-in-law Tony Rodham helped obtain a presidential pardon for a Tennessee couple last March over the objections of the Justice Department, Mr. Rodham and lawyers involved in the pardon said today.

Posted by: Progressive Democrat | May 5, 2008 10:18:17 AM

When are any or you that are dredging on the Rev. Wright situation realize that he is not the one running for president. It is time for you as grown ups to start acting as such. You are refusing to tell the truth most of you anyway and the truth that I am seeing is that most americans are scared as hell that an intelligent well educated black man could possibably win this election and is capable of running this country just as well as any other American can. I am an Obama supporter but in the event his is not chose as the democratic nominee then let it be known without a doubt that no matter how much I may disagree with some of her views Hillary WILL be who I vote for in November.

I have read many articles that have said that Hillary supporters will vote for McCain or stay home if Obama is elected and vice versa. Well all that I have to say about that is go ahead and do what makes you happy, but when you end up having to go through the same stuff that you have gone through for the last 8 year don't complain..............

Posted by: Growup | May 5, 2008 10:15:59 AM

Pastors say what they have to and politicians say what they have to, to quote Rev. Wright.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 5, 2008 10:11:01 AM

The man who tried to soar above politics has been brought back to earth by the same media organizations that helped fuel his spectacular rise. After more than a year of mostly glowing coverage, Barack Obama is having to defend his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his temerity in not sporting a flag pin, even his arugula-loving, bad-bowling, let-me-eat-my-waffle persona.
Barry can not win the GE.
Barry has the new and shinning baggage that takes him nowhere.
Barry will never ever be able to wash the stink of his past with all his "close friends" ever present, at his side, behind his back and WRIGHT up front!
Give it up Barry you are hurting the party, your family and America. RESIGN!

Len
Hillary is not offering relief truly.

She is saying something she knows is false. Anytime the gas tax has been alleviated..the oil companies took a couple of days and then were back up to the same level. This is a horrible solution...

every policy out of her mouth including healthcare will not succeed and is completely being used to get votes for her presidency.

Why does she not have ANY economists backing her plan...because there are none. Period. So as much as you want to call them pundits...again this is the GW Bush policy and government...ignore experts... and pander and/or scare to get your personal agenda forward...in Hillary's case...that is just for her to be President.

She is revolting.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:10:48 AM

I can guarantee it will be ugly if Clinton and the media has its way.

Remember Jake AT LEAST 50% of the Democrates support Obama, and we expect some balance in the reporting. This trash is making many of us angry. perhaps loss viewers is what is warrented.

Posted by: Thinking | May 5, 2008 10:05:12 AM

I am actually pretty glad about these numbers...considering the poll was set up referencing three different relationships as part of the main push of this poll... they line up Obama and Wright...Hillary and Bill Clinton and then John McCain and George Bush...

Lets see which relationship would be the most damaging...

unfortunately Hillary has a lot more relationships and so does McCain for that matter (that are abundant and close and will be brought up in the general that have not been brought up in the primary)

so this poll is faulty... and gallup knows it was posed incorrectly...

we will see by other polls that will start coming out.

any comparison with a primary where nonw of Hillary's scandals have been discussed besides the ones she continues to make... and John McCain still getting a free ride because of Clinton...

unless she won both this is done...the nomination is his...and if it wasn't John McCain would win ...she can never win with unfavorables as high as she has...
absolutely positively and unarguably never.

and it's a good thing since the terrorists I am sure are already using her dumb nuclear comments to recruit.

Posted by: dl | May 5, 2008 10:05:00 AM

Obama offers pundits and economists. Hillary offers relief. It isn't much but it is something and it is soon.

So who is practicing old style politics? It seems to me I've heard enough from the apologists for the markets and the oil companies for the last eight years. Obama is following that worn path of explaining away any relief and accentuating more of the same complicated formulas that somehow always put the poor on the beaten end of the stick.

The choice is clear.

50-38?

I don't think so....

Posted by: Mark | May 5, 2008 10:02:08 AM

I doubt these polls--they have either been badly done, Rush Limbaugh is much more effective than we admit, or they are skewed on purpose.

Posted by: Oscar Meyer | May 5, 2008 10:01:36 AM

Not having won a single major battle ground state, Sen. Obama is simply unelectable!

Posted by: CharleyChaplin | May 5, 2008 10:00:43 AM

Everybody says Obama is more honest than Hillary. What is it that people are worried Obama would do? As some comedian said "are you worried he's going to bring in white slavery?" Congress isn't going to vote for anything that wacky. Unlike McCain Obama is still married to his first wife (he hasn't committed adultery), goes to church (I don't know anything about the churches of Hillary and McCain), has said in debates he's concerned about what television broadcasts to his kids (nothing from McCain or Clinton on that), and unlike Hillary he doesn't lie to suit the situation. Repubicans don't like him because they wish he was theirs (character wise).

Posted by: Oscar Meyer | May 5, 2008 9:58:21 AM

Obama has rendered himself unelectable under all scenarios. He has his core ultra-liberal base but simply has alienated all of the people who he really needs to win all of the important states.

It's going to be ugly. I think the super/automatic delegates are going to be watching the exit polls for any evidence that he has traction outside his base. And if not, he's toast.

Posted by: Lezident | May 5, 2008 9:57:50 AM

"BKMC, I am afraid of that God could d*mn America if Obama is elected to be US President as Wright said."
I am sorry, God will never damn any one or country but the people do. May God bless America, please help Americans pick a right leader.

Posted by: stock_craft | May 5, 2008 9:56:32 AM

Your poll is either dead wrong or way off! The race is much much tighter. All other polls contradicts yours!

Posted by: CharleyChaplin | May 5, 2008 9:55:30 AM

There is nothing Obama has said or done that makes appear anything but honest, capable and concerned about average Americans. If his crime is guilt by association, then McClinton have done worse. Hillary is part of that cult that meets in Washington for breakfast or whatever. Hillary's husband left us unprepared for 9-11 as part of her experience and Hillary is constantly mis-speaking and saying whatever polls show people want to hear or fear. McCain has associates with a drug dealer--Cindy's money comes from the distribution of beer--which has lead to more death (via fights and accidents)and crime than other drugs.

Posted by: Oscar Meyer | May 5, 2008 9:48:55 AM

I guess it is a matter of who you want to belive, But Gallup says Obama by 4 and Rassumsen is now Obama by 1.

I think he has weathered the storm very well, but the nedia will not give it up. While the media qoutes Clinton form every stops she makes, all you guys do is speak of Rev Wright.

The rare good news is what should count anyway. I have never understood voting for a person you see as dishonest and untrustworthy, which seems the case with Hillary. Perhaps it is the reason we have such a difficult time in the rest of the world, or why we are in Iraq. Do any of you believe we were told the truth in Iraq/

Posted by: Thinking | May 5, 2008 9:48:34 AM

I don't think he would have left that Black Liberation church if he didn't have to. I don't believe that he had no idea what was being taught in the church, that he had never heard anything like those horrible statements Wright said. Why did Obama disinvite him to an important political function, then, if he he had no idea Wright could be so offensive? Obama is lying and I don't trust him with all this crazy affiliations to be our leader. NOBAMA!!!
