"West Wing" Actors Back Arianna V. McCain
May 09, 2008 10:58 AM
Speaking of headlines I never anticipated writing...
Web maven Arianna Huffington pushes Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff to back her story that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, at a dinner party in 2001, said he didn't vote for George W. Bush for president in 2000.
The New York Times and the Washington Post have the goods.
McCain alter-ego Mark Salter calls Huffington "a flake and a poser and an attention-seeking diva."
He says he doesn't know either actor "but I assume they were acting."

Hillary for Mccain said it all for a lot of us.....Buckle up it's going to be a bumpy ride.........I always thought I was a liberal till I took a look at Arianna and Ayers and Wright......Turns out I am a Clinton Democrat after all.
And McCain is closer to the America that I live in than the far left of my own party.
Hillary or Bust...and bust would be Mccain! Some of us are just trying to decide if we can really pull the lever for a Republican or if we just stay home. The deal is I live in Texas and a lot of my good old boy friends voted for Obama to hurt Hillary....so I'm pretty sure without the Hispanic vote that Hillary got we will be Republican in Nov anyway.

I'm a life long Democrat who does not recognize this party any longer. It has been taken over by the MoveOn, Daily Kos and the Huffington Post crowds. they are so blinded by their far far left views they can't see what bashing half of the Democratic parties support (Hillocrats) will never get them into a whitehouse. This country is more centrist than they would like it to be. Hillary Clinton knew that too and has the best chance to beat McCain, who is also Centrist. But what they have done and how they've treated other Democrats is just despicable. I will not support Barack Obama. The "race baiting" done by him and his campaign has sickened me. You can't even say a color anymore without being accused of being a racist, by them and by the left leaning media. Barack Obama ACTUALLY attended a racist church and Hillary and Bill are the racist?? The media and the Democratic leadership has failed this country and I will not prop up a flawed candidate like Barack Obama just because he is a Democrat. I'll hedge my bets on McCain and his "Maverick" past. I invite all other Hillary supporters who have been sickened by this man and his campaign to join me. Ariana Huffington is a windbag that doesn't know the pulse of the country, only Beverly Hills.

@Ken:
He is definitely a hero.
Y'all trash talk him all you want.
The main event is just starting. For the last two elections, you've been without a clue as to what America respects, needs or will elect. And nothing has changed.

McCain is getting confused. Maybe he voted aginst him before voting for him?
Posted by: frank burns | May 9, 2008 6:02:58 PM
Genna, he's a ultra-politico who does everything for politics. Do you really think he changed religions at age 71 for anything other than politics? Think about it. Have you ever known anyone who changed religions at such an advanced age? Oh my gosh, did I just draw attention to his age? What an underhanded thing to do. BTW, check his academic record from his youth... he lost his bearings way back then as well.

ChiliGTC - What does Obama have to do with this story? He was never even mentioned. I admit it's a pointless story and ABC should find some real news to report on, but why are you trying to sling mud at Obama over it?
Posted by: Will | May 9, 2008 5:56:00 PM
NYC Stylz, you are totally full of it. Ask McCain's cellmate, Bud Day, the most decorated soldier in modern history, whether McCain is a phoney. When he first saw McCain at the Hanoi Hilton, he thought the man would die in a matter of days, he was so emaciated. Yeah, McCain was pampered all right. You lying fool. Now crawl back to your masters at Moveon.org and get your treat.

Is it just me, or is Mark Salter's first instinct to attack someone's character? Every time I've seen his name, its in relation to a negative attack against someone.
Posted by: Sean Braisted | May 9, 2008 5:29:15 PM
Agreed this story is old, but not as old as McCain. Most of the big corporations that the Republican party plays to make their employees retire before they get to his age - most at 65.
How many CEOs in the fortune 1000 (that are not founders) are still actively employed and over the age of 70. Do that math on that one!!!
Regardless, the real story is who he picks as his VP. Get ready. Trust me this is where the story begins.

So who is John McCain? A double-talk express that voted against George Bush in 2000 and 2004, or a straight talking conservative who has stood shoulder to shoulder with President George Bush since 2000?
Posted by: john | May 9, 2008 4:38:36 PM
John McCain is Bush Light... He has totally flip flopped on lots of things since 2000... American cannot handle another moron like him in office...

What a weird story. John McCain was at a dinner party in Beverly Hills with Arianna Huffington, Bradley Whitford, and Richard Schiff?? That's odd as it is. It'd be like finding out that Pres. Bush hangs out with, oh I don't know, Hugo Chavez, in France, on the weekends.
And then its "He said this, I heard him" and "No, I didn't, you're just an attention-seeking diva."
Way too much drama, and way too much weirdness. I don't know...it's just weird, isn't it? Weird, weird, weird.

Ken - you sound like a Bush/Obama suppoerter. McCain is no hero! Juevos man, Juevos!
Posted by: NYCStylez | May 9, 2008 3:52:02 PM
John McCain is no hero. He was a pilot unfortunate enough to get shot down over Viet Nam while dropping bombs. Once he was captured he sang like bird and was moved from the Hanoi Hilton to better quarters because his dad was an admiral. Kennedy, Kerry, they were real heros, McCain is a pretender and wannabe. He is a liar and a crook. Check his record. If you want war, no security, no peace, no privacy, vote McCain. Remember you get the government you deserve. Those that voted for Bush know this now. What a mess this country is in. People seem to forget how the Republican screwed things every time they get in office. Name one good thing the Republicans have done in the last 40 years. Just one good thing that didn't benefit corporations or their own pockets.
Posted by: Ken | May 9, 2008 3:49:35 PM
Frankly, I cannot find anyone to admit that they voted for George W Bush.
Posted by: ChiliGTC | May 9, 2008 3:47:09 PM
So we have Josh from the fake White House on NBC and the fake journalist Huffington putting this nonsense out there. Will the Obama People do anything to get him elected? Hummmm??? Sound like what they accuse the Clinton people of doing. Hypocracy perhaps? I keep saying it. Obama's supporters are going to destroy his chances and the media is right there with them. Amazing!
Posted by: NYCStylez | May 9, 2008 3:36:07 PM
It's not about who McCain voted for. It's about his lying about it.
Posted by: db | May 9, 2008 3:31:49 PM
Thanks Ed. Republicans lie. Brilliant.
Posted by: Chris | May 9, 2008 3:26:52 PM
Ms. Huffington may be mistaken about how Mr. McCain voted in 2000. He is an American Hero and has earned the right to vote as he wishes. If he did not vote for Mr. Bush, he probably made a wise choice. This seems like a very minor issue.
Posted by: texasdemocrat | May 9, 2008 3:17:45 PM
Obama supporters are against a secret vote. Who cares who McCain voted for? don't whine about "distractions" when Obamais asked about stuff.
Posted by: geevill | May 9, 2008 3:12:02 PM
Was McCain for Bush before he voted against him or was he against Bush before he voted for him? Am I confused or is McCain?

the comments on this site are an interesting insight into US politics. that and many other things i've seen recently, and in the last few elections, lead me to think that the way you elect your leaders is seriously flawed.
lots of love from new zealand <3

I don't know what McCain is but he's no republican or democrat, just the jerk that he is. Moderate what's that? a leftist who want's to change America so that thy can feel good about themself, even though there ideals have'nt work, No matter who get's the white house the next five years will be the end of your freedom, with Obama, Hillary or McCain. Pick your poison America.
Posted by: Xthat | May 9, 2008 2:54:04 PM
I love it.
If he confirmed her story, the Bush base would be outraged.
If he denied it, he ends up clinging to Bush, angering the center and left.
This is a preview of the fall, folks.
Obama doesn't have to campaign, he can just stand there and make comments, and everytime McCain responds, he loses some support on one end or the other.
Posted by: fontapa | May 9, 2008 2:50:11 PM
Who cares who he voted for 7 years ago??... and you get to vote for whoever you want,,, YaY America
So whose voting for the Plantation Owners wife or the Horse Holder anyway?
Posted by: SoR | May 9, 2008 2:36:06 PM
The importance of the story shows that McCain can not tell the truth. If he did vote for Bush after all the dirt and slander leveled at him back in 2000 he would have to be an idiot. McCain has changed his position on many important issues to try to be president. He is now a Bush clone and a hypocrite. I am also wondering if some of the other folks,Republicans who have given their opinions here are from this planet, the stuff that falls out their mouths does not make much sense. Just attack someone if you do not like their opinion.
Seven years of the Bush White House has done our country and the world great damage.

How interesting that these 2, one specially an Obama supporter "comes out" with this story now about McCain... ummmm..! Suspicious any one????
McCain will win in Novemember...! No matter all the dirty tricks Obama lovers will try before then...!
Obama the elitis is done!
Posted by: Louis | May 9, 2008 2:22:30 PM
If the man can not just simply own up to the truth, we have a real problem. This is such a nothing issue and if he has to lie about something that has no relevance than what will happen when we need to hear the truth.
Posted by: ED | May 9, 2008 2:10:24 PM
He's a Republican. Of course he lies.

"I think it reprehensible for Arianna to go after McCain for a back story tidbit from 8 years ago."
They need a distraction because they can't reach the blue collar voters any other way. If you have nothing in common with the commoner, it's hard to win in America. That is why Rove did such a number on Kerry and Gore. Now the Democrats have an ultra-left ultra-elitist with a public streak of arrogance, so they have to weaken McCain anyway they can.
Unfortunately for them, America has a habit of supporting veterans except where as with Kerry, they can paint them as traitors or fools. With McCain, that simply won't work. His bona fides are too strong.
For those of us denied our candidate, cool down and enjoy the ride. The main event is about to begin.
Posted by: len | May 9, 2008 1:56:25 PM
I used to like McCain. If he had run as an independent in 2000 I would have voted for him. Too bad he has become a Bush clone and so beholden to him that he cannot admit that he voted against him in 2000.
Posted by: FSI | May 9, 2008 1:55:44 PM
Mark Salter calls Huffington "a flake and a poser and an attention-seeking diva."..........Isn't he the jerk who read ageism into Obama "losing his bearings" comment? Maybe it's not McCain but Salter whos loses his bearings.
Posted by: JR | May 9, 2008 1:55:14 PM
Odd how all these liberal Obama supporters remained silent until this week. Wow, it is almost like they are being paid to do it. Oh, wait, they are actors and idiots. let us remember that Arianna is a little dense -- she was married to a oil baron who was obviously gay, and she was the only one who was surprised when he left her for a man. We should be nice to Arianna, I hear she had a tough time on the 454 foot yacht in the South Pacific last month.

If McCain voted for Bush in 2000 after what he did to sabotage his candidacy then McCain is VERY and I mean VERY republican (not a plus in my book). If he didn't vote for him but refuses to admit it, then again, not a plus in my book. McCain loses either way.
Posted by: JR | May 9, 2008 1:44:18 PM
I don't favor Obama but everytime I see someone call him anti-american I cringe. The most rabid anti-american I can think of is BUSH, based on what he's done to our country. And everytime I see someone call McCain MODERATE, well I just gag.
Posted by: JR | May 9, 2008 1:39:29 PM
If he didn't vote for Bush then really, kudos to him as that was great judgment on his part. On the other hand, it shows how much he has changed since 2000...
Posted by: MIguy | May 9, 2008 1:35:00 PM
I cannot for the life of me understand why a Clinton supporter would back McCain over Obama. "Anti-American aura?" What the hell is that? Her pandering makes her more American? Believing that America is going down the wrong path, and desperately wanting to change the situation, is not anti-American. I can't help but feel some deeply subconscious latent racism at work here, or something similarly sinister. And "billionaire liberals?" Clinton has more big money support than Obama - don't make Obama out to be the big money guy just because he's getting average people to support him to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. You're a joke. If you at all understand your politics, and what you are hoping for when you cast your vote, what could possibly make a Clinton supporter choose McCain over Obama other than superficial personality-type impressions? Get real people. You first Debra.
Posted by: Tom | May 9, 2008 1:33:54 PM
HoosierSue...I'm with you. If not Hillary then McCain all the way. I will fight tooth and nail to not let Obama near the White House. He has the scariest anti-American aura ever. Comfort yourself with AMERICA HISTORICALLY VOTES RIGHT OF CENTER. Why do the Dems think Obama has a better chance being so far left against McCain? Doesn't the Hillary - McCain race sound more competitive?
Now if you can BUY a Presidency, I'd be scared because the billionaire liberals who are pushing Obama through for their own purposes, are feeding his campaign $$$. Be like me in the fall, and work for McCain to become our 44th Pres., if Hillary is treated so poorly by the Dems.
Posted by: Debra | May 9, 2008 1:08:50 PM
If McCain didn't vote for Bush in 2000 would you blame him? Not that I'm a big fan of John McSame, but Bush and his demon hoard did a real hatchet job on his integrity in South Carlina. If I got torpedoed and swiftboated by a guy who assaulted my honor in that kind of way I doubt very much I would enthusiastically go out and vote for him.
McSame got his reputation as a maverick and independent thinker because he did not embrace Bush like most of the sheeple who did even before 9/11. When in 2004 he flip flopped and suddenly became Bush's BFF on the campaign trail singing Kumbaya from one end of the country to the other he went from being a maverick to Bush's chief assistant lackey.
McSame has become the same kind of pandering Politician that he stood apart from. If he has any integrity left he'd say, No I didn't vote for him in 2000, there had been a lot of bad blood between us after the 2000 election, but we put that all behind us and found common ground. That way he puts aside the I'm Bush's whipping boy image, and doesn't sound like an opportunist.
"I actually voted against bush, before I voted for him." Now if only we could get a picture of him windsurfing.

"He's a moderate Republican just as Hillary is a moderate Democrat."
Who will overturn Roe vs. Wade.
"Moderate", huh?

Now who really CARES about Adrianna Huffington (or whomever) has to say about John McCain. Once the rats of the world "think" their ship is sinking, where do you think they go? over to the other side naturally. Huffington is a fool and has been forever - who even takes her seriously? Just because she is an avid, rabid obama supporter, we should fold up and honor her with a Pulitzer? Huffington, why don't you just shut up?
I didn't vote for G.W. Bush either - I WON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA - now - Do the phony "hollywood" actors that support obama have anything to say about that? WHO CARES WHAT YOU PHONY HOLLYWOOD actors do? None of you are worth a $10 movie ticket in my book. Hollywood should influence the way I vote? In a pigs' butt they will.
Posted by: Lou | May 9, 2008 12:31:33 PM
If it's true that McCain didn't vote for Bush, then that's one more reason for me to love him! He's a moderate Republican just as Hillary is a moderate Democrat.
Posted by: HoosierSue | May 9, 2008 12:20:57 PM
I think it reprehensible for Arianna to go after McCain for a back story tidbit from 8 years ago. At some point, you have to say it's craven.
Reporters report. Politicians spin. The straight talk express was much more honest then than McCain is now. BUT we know that already, you don't have to damage his conservative credibility by repeating what he said in 2000 after all that 'black baby' allegations the Bush campaign smeared him with in South Carolina.
The act in and of itself makes him much more loveable to me TODAY than I felt yesterday with him embracing Bush. It shows that he is HUMAN and not homo politicus.
