"3 AM for Feminism"

June 06, 2008 9:58 AM

The fantastic Michelle Goldberg takes a provocative look at feminism, post-Clinton campaign.

"Clinton has encountered straight-up misogyny--lots of it. At the same time, anger at obvious instances of sexism has expanded to encompass every setback she's faced, every jab thrown her way--the cut and thrust of any normal campaign. Several of her feminist defenders, for example, interpreted calls for Clinton to drop out, lest she cause a party rift, as expressions of condescending gender bias. ...But that wasn't anti-woman or even anti-Clinton; it was just Democratic politics."

I'm not feminist but I voted for Hillary with lots of other good reasons.
Yes, I have a woman's feelings when it comes with failure like now.
I can't even imagine how Hillary will deal with her lost.
Even worst when tomorrow she has to concede and endorses her rival at the same time.

Calls for HRC to step down by her male peers was a behavior, not part of the democratic process. The democratic process encourages votes and record voting turnout. It also allows mediation with the DNC.

As an example of behaviors which are lacking in respect, Edwards could have taken his concerns privately to Clinton but instead aired them as publicly as possible. He said she should get out of the race as he simultaneously backed Obama, which was immediately after she had a landslide victory in WVA. Of course, women reacted to that!

The irony is that as Clinton's male peers were complaining about her damaging democratic unity, their complaints were causing women to feel increasingly divisive towards the party. The behavior of prominent democratic leaders has truly left a lot to be desired.

But when you look at the alternative, it's definitely time to put aside the recent shortcomings of a handful of men . . .

Nancy Pelosi and the DNC have been absolutely convinced that women for Hillary will end up backing Obama. Pelosi said it at least 10 weeks ago. They just don't get it. Telling me I WILL vote for Obama because they say so. Blowing us off is the ONE thing that's enraged me. Bosses who have told me how much smarter they are only to have me do their work for them and cover their a$$e$. Done..Finished..June Cleaver has left the building.

Too many people put
color
before
country.

Too many people accepted
conceit and arrogance
for content and substance.

Too many people wore blinders
on their minds
and hatchets in their mouths.

Too many people supported the
broken down, out of touch DNC.
Now there will be less of them.

Goldsburg has it going on. Equal playing field only, not fairness in all ways.

It isn't fair that the media can say outright "YOU SUCK, GET OUT." to a man. But the media MUST be fair because it is a woman? No, the media should tone it down until all 50 states and territories have their say. If we need to do something as a democracy, it is to pick a candidate ourselves.

Women took it too far and made the term misogyny meaningless. The thing about gender discrimination is that it has a horrible impact on careers, reputation and access. The media and the public calling Hillary names AND she got 18 million votes...not too bad.

Name calling is an American institution. The names called shouldn't be sexist, but calling names in and of itself IS INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE.

Tricia,
I would say :
they can't stand the heat, that's why they got her out of the kitchen!

Bob Dylan endorses BO?
I read on 2 occasions comments posted by Bob Dylan in Realclear Politics, and It seemed clear to me that he supported Hillary Clinton.
So there seems to be some kind of misinformation going around to propell pro-BO propaganda.
I don't care any more. But I have to say that the bloggers commenting about an article by Marie Coco saying that BO has to ask women to support him, was like a battle between Hillary supporters and BO supporters (paid bloggers I think).
It was isane.
BO paid bloggers were worn out because they could not convince any of Hillary supporters!
There is still a profound sense of disgust towards what happened in the primary election.

Posted by: jane | Jun 6, 2008 6:53:41 PM

Nobody really knows who BO is (his real self and character, his real convictions) while the media and BO supporters, the Dem militants and activists indulged in bashing her.
How can one vote for presidency a candidate that is not so known?

Thanks for the link to the Goldberg article. I can't entirely agree with her: "there is serious disaffection right now among many women about the sense of being shunted aside, told to pipe down and line up." I felt that - but I felt it because I am a middle aged professional woman who did not line up behind Hillary.

It seem like what the campaign did do was open up the question of what it really means to support women's rights - not just glass-ceiling feminists - but regular women.

Absolutley, directly from the former President.

But if the delegate situation and nominee race were reversed with Obama running in the same second place behind Clinton, would there have been calls for him to step down?

Posted by: katrina | Jun 6, 2008 4:21:43 PM

Last week, even Howard Dean admitted that there were many sexist remarks and actions directed toward HRC and how he deplored all such actions. Where was he when these sexist comments were being made?? Oh yeah, he was in the corner with the people making those sexist remarks, the Obama camp! And Dean got his payback from Obama yesterday for his ignoring any sexist comments untill it was all over. Kieth Oberman and jack Cafferty really seem to enjoy making rude and sexist comments about HRC. Any hint of racism, real or imagined was played up byt Obama/Dean/Peposi but they completely ignored all the hatefull sexist comments aimed at HRC. Well Now I'm ignoring those hollow calls for dem party unity. Should have thought about unity a long time ago. Cause I'm already gone. I heard for months how HRC was really a closet republican so my voting for McCain should be completely understandable. And its the old line party activists that the
DNC has alienated, not just some causual sometime voters. BYE BYE

Bhrandon, only a "dirty" Republican you say! I guess you didn't see where the Democrats crossed over and voted in the Republican Michigan primary! The DailyKos urged Democrats to "help with a raid of the Michigan Primary and vote for Mitt Romney to draw out the Republican presidential race to weaken GOP chances in the general (election)."

boston,

the obama supporter have to say that, because that is what THEY have been TOLD, they don't know if there is a difference or not.
THEY know Sen. clinton is smart, so if it can be said that obama has the same polices as sen. clinton that is good enough for them.

Posted by: jgaw | Jun 6, 2008 3:35:58 PM

Boston - please point out the policy differences between Hillary and Obama.. maybe you can count them on one hand. Even Hillary admits that. Listen to Hillary... Don't vote for McCain. A vote for McCain is a vote AGAINST HILLARY. If you love her so much why do you threaten to betray the America in which she beleive?

cindy
how is what bill clinton said about jesse and barack racist?

jesse said he didn't see it as racist, he appreciated the shout out from bill.

so cindy, you tell me how was it racist?

Posted by: jgaw | Jun 6, 2008 3:21:05 PM

as an african american woman voted for sen. clinton not because she is a woman, but because she has all the right qualifications and the will to put this country back on the right track.

if obama had come to the table with the good works of sen. clinton i would have supported him

-------------------------------
jgaw you said it best your post is spot on.
All the jawing going on does not change the fact that the DNC did the worst possible thing in setting up 2 minorities to go after the presidency.
A 6 year vetted qualified Senator, a woman who worked for the Democrats for YEARS!
A 143 day Senator, unknown, unvetted, inexperienced. A young black man with a far, far left background with dubious friends.
They then savaged the woman.
They supported the black man at every level, money, media fame, idolatry, cried out he was a VICTIM at every turn!

I must vote for McCain.

Your fault DNC, you set it up, you set us up to fail again!

CORRECTION: When black people heard that Bill Clinton compared Barack Obama to Jesse Jackson when Bill always ran to the black church "after he sinned," black people started to vote 90% for Obama.

OR

When white people in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania learned that Barack Obama was black, without finding anything about him, and told news reporters hells no I'm voting for a black man, this TOO became about race.

More demonetization of Hillary Clinton. Do any of you ever wonder, if the media is so dead set on destroying someone (Clintons) that maybe they have an agenda? And maybe that agenda is not in your best interest?

No need to wonder b/c now it is BHO's turn on the screws.
We ain't seen nothing as what is to come piling on him from the RNC who own the media!
Racism will be rampart and poor BHO and Michelle will be annihilated!
Just vote McCain.
