Couric: Clinton "Received Some of the Most Unfair, Hostile Coverage I've Ever Seen"

June 11, 2008 1:45 PM

Receiving an award named after feminist icon Alice Paul yesterday, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric said, according to Media Bistro's Patrick Gavin that "however you feel about her politics, I feel that Sen. Clinton received some of the most unfair, hostile coverage I've ever seen" -- rooted in sexism, she charged, helping to lead to her defeat.

Couric recalled one "prominent member of the commentariat" saying he "found it hard to be objective when it came to Obama."

She said she remembers thinking, "that's your job" and that he should "find another line of work."

I don't disagree with the notion that Clinton received unfair and hostile coverage, some of which was rooted in sexism (though surely some of it, such as the Bosnia sniper fire episode, had nothing to do with her gender).

But did it contribute to her defeat? I tend to think that generally most reporters were fair, it was a small percentage that weren't. But enough to notice, for sure.

And one wonders how much one of those reporters now on the Clintons' proverbial enemies list may have actually impacted votes. In some ways their boorishness may have helped galvanize Clinton supporters, especially women, far more than it convinced anyone to vote against the senator.

None of which is to excuse it. But exit polls indicated that most of those for whom gender was an important voting issue went for Clinton. And most of those for whom race was an important voting issue went for Clinton, as well. That data would seem to indicate Clinton was helped far more than she was hurt by her gender. And Obama was hurt far more than he was helped by his race.

I wish I knew which "prominent member of the commentariat" who struggled to be objective Couric was talking about.

For journalism's sake I wish there weren't so many possibilities to choose from!

About Belle Starr's comment - hoping that Bill Clinton will pack in his office and go to some other location where he'll be much more appreciated - you must have been reading my mind. I sent him an e-mail saying essentially the same thing. Makes me sick to think that, of all the places he could have set up shop after leaving the White House, he chose that place and look how he was stabbed in the back and called "racist." Leave, Bill, and send a message of your own.

As far as I'm concerned, the free press no longer exists; it's power is available to the highest bidder... similar to the sale of our votes in the purchase of delegates.

What has happened to our DEMOCRATIC way of life?

It has become a joke.... just as this election has become a distorted burlesque of what our forefathers intended elections to be!

As a result, the best of the candidates was thrown out with the garbage even though she won the popular vote.... and we are stuck with an egomaniacal con artist and an older gentleman who may not have the fortitude to withstand the dirty campaign heading his way.

Couric's change of heart is too little, too late.

The fourth estate should be renamed
"the FEH! estate".

The DNC should be demolished.

Hillary before Obama
McCain before Obama...

COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY!!!

I strongly believe that there was a long list of reporters who felt that and actually were extremely pro Obama. One of them may have voiced his thoughts but there were certainly many who acted out on their feelings. Note to author: "That data would seem to indicate Clinton was helped far more than she was hurt by her gender. And Obama was hurt far more than he was helped by his race." repeating this comment and offering an opinion that Clinton benefitted because of her race, would suggest that her coverage was fair and unbiased, this in my opinion suggest that this author is also more favorable to Obama than Clinton. Even when expressed in a subtle manner, it's still obvious; but it is just my opinion.

Katie Couric is one to be added to the list..She herself did Hillary such an injustice when she interviewed her.
"Sen Clinton, what are you going to do if you lose?" Hillary said, "Well, I don't intend to lose." Katie, "Come on. Aren't you just a little bit afraid?" Later in the interview, "Sen. Clinton, I understand that the boys in school had quite a unique nickname for you." Hillary was obviously embarrassed but answered, "Well yes. They called me Frigidare." This was right after the big smear about Hillary crying, a media EXAGGERATION!! It was obvious that Katie was trying her best to get Hillary to tear up again so she could be credited with the next big "Top Story" that the MSM viciously compete for. Those are just a couple of examples. Katie had a wonderful opportunity to help Hillary show that a woman can and was very qualified to be President. The media injustice didn't just include the sexist remarks. It was also about the things the media didn't do. Early in the race, their was absolutely no mention of the delegate count while Hillary was leading by 170 over Obama. The media also showed Obama's speech after a huge victory for Hillary. I had to got to BBC to see her victory speech. When Hillary would win, the reporters headlines were, "What caused Sen. Obama to lose?" rather than congratulating her. Spins like.."Sen. Obama is only trailing Sen. Clinton by two states." rather than, "Sen. Clinton is leading Sen. Obama by two states." There's a lot of to be said about the way a reporter words things, and the reporters intentionally worded things to Obama's favor..From The O'Rielly Factor...he referred to a report that stated 84% of the reports about Obama were positive, compaired to only 53% percent of positive coverage of Sen. Clinton." I could go on and on, but I think I made my point....

Dodged a bullet,

"We weren't in a position to assert our rights - and the feminist movement wasn't much interested in blue-collar women like me."

You are so right. The organizations that were supposed to help women like NOW would not help women living through sexism unless it could advance their organization (by making the news).

Obama 08!

Let's face it, Clinton was not winning until she started whinning. The negative press and her crying about it definately helped her win in the final states.

I can remember her absolutely crowing when Obama was getting bad press. She stood on stage and said "If you can't stand the heat.....".

Whatever you say about MSNBC and Hillary can also be said about Obama and FOX. The even each other out.

The anchorman that made that statement was NBC's Brian Williams.

One other thing in all of this, there absolutely was a ton of bribing and cheating and intimdiating that went on in the caucus state voting, while the reporters fawned over Barack Obama.

Posted by: ItsAlessandro | Jun 12, 2008 1:35:03 AM

Katie's looking for an excuse for herself? It was always the most privileged women who claimed that every barrier to their complete happiness was caused by men/sexism. Working class women who put up with most of the discrimination and sexism were never offered the "affirmative action" programs of the 70's and 80's that well heeled and educated women like Hillary were able to take advantage of. We weren't in a position to assert our rights - and the feminist movement wasn't much interested in blue-collar women like me. I've not seen one specific example of the sexism Clinton supporters are decrying. Candidates running against her had to pull their punches, walk on eggshells, and couldn't even respond to anything she said or she'd cry that she was being attacked. It was ok for her, though, pull every trick out of the Republican's southern strategy playbook and deny she was doing it. There are many women as, or more, able and intelligent and many, many more who are honorable, decent, caring people who'd make great Presidents. She isn't one of them.

The list is starting to grow, Brokaw, Couric, Phil Bronstein, that are coming out and outright just sticking it to MSNBC.

Appaently MSNBC couldn't be happier, their ratings are up, and that's probably all that matters.

So many times I made calls to MSNBC to complain about Keith Oberlman and Chris Matthews and Mika Brezynski, etc. on their bias reporting towards Hillary. It was absolutely disgusting. I am glad the Katie Kouric had the courage to say something.

Posted by: mary | Jun 12, 2008 12:15:18 AM

I so agree with Couric about the media unfairly going after Hillary. Had the level of racism reached half the level sexism heads would have rolled. This was not journalism. We were given lies and propaganda. There was a time when being a journalist stood for something. A time when a journalist would never allow personal opinion to be known. I now cringe when I hear the likes of a David Gregory's being a White House correspondent. Where does the truth begin for the Tim Russert's of the media and slander end? I have been robbed of my faith in the media by all of those who behaved in such a dishonorable manner. Clearly Hillary Clinton did not deserve what took place during the campaign. More to the point the public was entitled to something far better than what was delivered throughout the primary season.

Posted by: marmeesmomma | Jun 12, 2008 12:05:31 AM

Katie is totally correct. The Today Show misses her seriousness and genuine sincerity. Tim Russert and Chris Matthews never did like the Clintons. I would almost guess since Matthews got so stupid that the person she was talking about might be Russert. The little commentary at the end of the primary broadcast, when they defended themselves against the Hillary trashing was so ridiculous that they HAD to have been told to explain it away. Andrea Mitchell just acted like a two faced highschool reporter wannabe and Donna Brazille just showed her true colors. But it wasn't just them. The media gave Obama so much free advertisement that I'm sure he's got plenty of money left for John McCain. The most ironic part of this is the bias that got him the nomination will be the same reason he loses in November.

many of the talking head women, andrea mitchell, etc. all said it is not bashing women, it is just hillary.

well if they think, that they would be spared, just because they are who they are, they are mistaken.

msm bashing one woman anywhere
is bashing all women everywhere

but sen. clinton is out now,
so leave her alone, she is out of this.
talk about michelle and cindy

The continuous drummed out calls to get out of the race came from Obama surrogates. It was deliberate to discourage voters who were leaning for Hillary.

Posted by: irma | Jun 11, 2008 9:46:05 PM

The impact it had is obvious to anyone with thinking abilities. It encouraged female bashing of Hillary and female supporters as well as bashing of all and any Hillary supporters and THAT is what intensified female and male support. There are a lot of intelligent men who see the injustice as well. It discouraged people who were "leaning" for her. Come on people, it was deliberate political tactics provided by the owner of TIME WARNER and the likes.

Don't we all wish we could get a deal on our mortgage.

Chris Mathews also said he hated Hillary Clinton.

Hoosier Sue as someone whose ancestors fought at Lexington and Concord...whose grandparents gave them a leg up...
whose parents worked their blue collar butts off to give me opportunity and who myself worked my way out of lower than middle class income bracket over twenty years...

who earned it...

Their are people who earn it...and their are people who have the deck stacked in their favor because of our government and mistakes of our history...

including women...

if you think it is wrong for obama to shift the weight of responsibility to those people who have prospered exponentially MUCH more from the way the deck is stacked and from the opportunities this country and it's deck have afforded them...

...well, as an American...that says give me your tired your poor...your HUNGRY.

you're wrong...everyone needs to work but everyone needs to keep working at making this a more perfect union and that every person is created equal under the law at birth.

That is not socialism...that is working capitalism...which is informed by grace.

and what makes America great.

Posted by: dl | Jun 11, 2008 7:47:23 PM

I would guess that Katie probably says the same thing about why she is third in the ratings...

when really it has to do with that bad lighting job...they make her look like she has lasers coming out of her eyes...

can't they hire the set decorator, gaffer and lighting designer away from the Today show...
Moonves spend a dime on your nightly news and let Couric be Couric...rather than throw Couric under the bus with "ray gun eyes" and a straight jacket.

and then she provbably would recognize a badly run campaign as Hillary's problem from sexism that didn't seem to effect her for the two years leading up to the race.

Hi Jackie - Just getting back to this blog. Yes, I think you are right about how that particular tape being played over and over lost its shock value. I also could not understand why the one about Hillary was seldom played and was not really addressed by the media or the Obama campaign. Obama acted as if that particular episode had never happened. As far as crossing the line - when I heard Roland Martin and company essentially excuse the way Wright had behaved because he was an "older" black man, I knew the news media really had lost all objectivity!

Funny thing though, is that the Wright tape aired the day after Keith Olbermann did his rant against Hillary and Ferraro, saying basically that Hillary was running a racist campaign. I don't think I ever heard Olbermann say a thing about the Wright tapes...
