Couric: Clinton "Received Some of the Most Unfair, Hostile Coverage I've Ever Seen"

June 11, 2008 1:45 PM

Receiving an award named after feminist icon Alice Paul yesterday, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric said, according to Media Bistro's Patrick Gavin that "however you feel about her politics, I feel that Sen. Clinton received some of the most unfair, hostile coverage I've ever seen" -- rooted in sexism, she charged, helping to lead to her defeat.

Couric recalled one "prominent member of the commentariat" saying he "found it hard to be objective when it came to Obama."

She said she remembers thinking, "that's your job" and that he should "find another line of work."

I don't disagree with the notion that Clinton received unfair and hostile coverage, some of which was rooted in sexism (though surely some of it, such as the Bosnia sniper fire episode, had nothing to do with her gender).

But did it contribute to her defeat? I tend to think that generally most reporters were fair, it was a small percentage that weren't. But enough to notice, for sure.

And one wonders how much one of those reporters now on the Clintons' proverbial enemies list may have actually impacted votes. In some ways their boorishness may have helped galvanize Clinton supporters, especially women, far more than it convinced anyone to vote against the senator.

None of which is to excuse it. But exit polls indicated that most of those for whom gender was an important voting issue went for Clinton. And most of those for whom race was an important voting issue went for Clinton, as well. That data would seem to indicate Clinton was helped far more than she was hurt by her gender. And Obama was hurt far more than he was helped by his race.

I wish I knew which "prominent member of the commentariat" who struggled to be objective Couric was talking about.

For journalism's sake I wish there weren't so many possibilities to choose from!

I can name a whole list that was part of the Hillary Haters, Chris matthews, keith Obermann, Nora O'donnell, David Shuster, Tim Russert, Andrea Mitchell, Cooper Anderson, Wolf Blitzer,Kira Phillips,Gloria Bolger,Donna Brazille jeff Toobin, Jack Mccaffety. Even now that Hillary is gone, they still spew there hate. It is NOT Hillary's job to get the votes for Obama it is his to earn. The Hillary Hater Media is just turning off her supporters. We just won't vote!

DeShawn wants us to Share the Power, Share the Wealth, Share the Dream... um, how about working to get your own power, wealth, and dreams instead of trying to take it from the people who earned it as though you're entitled to it for doing nothing? America is a great country of unlimited opportunity - but you've got to be willing to work (and work hard) for it.

Chris Matthews/MSNBC said that we weren't Americans if we didn't cry listening to Obama's race speech.

I must not be an American then.

Fanatical supporters/media are so in love with Obama, and Obama is so in love with himself--I just have to turn the channel.

If the media/supporters treat McCain with as much disrespect as Hillary I suspect there will be a backlash from veterans and older voters. Decent people resent bullies.

McCain/Hillary

Toby, the only reason Katie didn't host a debate is because crybaby Obama cancelled the one scheduled for NC after getting his butt whipped in the PA debate. Funny how he claims to want to debate McCain "anytime, anywhere" but ran from debating Hillary. (I guess that doesn't include joint Town Halls since he's turned McCain down on those too.)

bebe quotes thecityedition:
"In the case of Senator Obama, they have covered up the extent of his links to organized crime and at least two Iraqi foreign agents with whom he has documented ties."

But, bebe: doesn't the Anointed One's off-black birthday suit make ALL the difference? John KERRY said it does.

I love "The List." I hope they all pay.

I also hope Bill Clinton packs up his Harlem, NY office and takes the Revenues he generates by being there, with him and I'm sure he could also do something different with his Global Initiative charity. He's not appreciated? Neither is his charity.

There's so many things the Clintons can do to those back-stabbers. I will enjoy watching EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

Good for Katie Couric! She is right.

No one is saying it is THE reason she lost. However, she did endure months of unfair bashing and you gotta wonder what impact it did have.

I've been paying attention lately on MSM.
Who they hit harder between the 2 nominees.
I think they are still on Obama's side.

WELL SAID DEE and JOAN.

The Media wanted both McCain and Obama. They are still claiming that McCain is a Maverick - which is so far from the truth - how many times has he flipped -flopped? Yet he's never been called out. They maligned/persecuted/vilified Sen. Clinton (Pres. Clinton and even Chelsea)at every turn. They played the "race card" as in the fairytale story and the MLK/LBJ story to cause African Americans to turn on the Clintons. Obama did not have to play dirty because he had the media doing that.

Hillary was definitely helped more by sexism than hurt by it. Most of the "harsh" coverage of her was wondering if/when she was going to drop out. The media basically ignored the Clinton's past scandals/associations and the conflict of interest created by Bill making millions basically as a lobbyist for hire while Hillary was running for president.

Dee I agree with you....the undertones and overtones of racism are floating around with the "affirmative action" jabs at Obama. As the grandmother of a bi-racial grandson I appreciate your mentioning it.

I believe that by constantly playing Wright's clips the media actually desensitised the public to them and they became less offensive and more acceptable. The last time this particular phenomonon struck me was the Rodney King beating by LA police in the 90's. It was seen so much that it lost it's impact. Did you notice how the clips that were a direct attack on Hillary were played less? I don't think it was really intentional. Somehow though this election crossed a line and hate talk and profane political attacks from the pulpit are excused.

The example that Couric cited is a classic example of biased news coverage that is NOT rooted in sexism. I wish that she could have at least cited a more relevant example to make her point. Bias is firmly rooted in the overwhelmingly libera mass media, as well as in the vastly smaller conservative media, like FOX and talk radio. You can't change a reporter's inherent ideology or motivation. Sexism was far less prominent in this campaign than simple bias and preference for one candidate over another. Let's face it, the media does not like the Clintons, and never have. The press liked their liberal ideology, but hated the Clintons on a personal basis, for many reasons as heavily discussed in the media for years.

Lyn,

just an add on. Katie Couric also asked Condaleeza Rice if she was dating -- ya know, just standard questions asked of every Secretary of State.

DaShawn,
YOUR black man will not be elected in November, start assimilating it, 'cause the high they go the harder they fall.

Wasn't Katie the person that asked Hillary important questions,at a debate, like pearls or diamonds? Then in a 60 min interviewasked about her "Someone told me your nickname in school was Miss Frigidaire. Is that true?"
I guess she could have been referring to herself, but NOW she is complaining about others, Good One

Yes, and playing the same Jeremiah Wright clip over and over and over wasn't racist at all.

Obama said, "Countrywide Financial was one of the folks, one of the institutions that was pumping up the subprime lending market and inducing people to take out these subprime loans," Obama said in Lancaster, Pa. "These are the folks who are responsible for infecting the economy and helping to create a home foreclosure crisis. Two million people may end up losing their homes." Yet, I (OBAMA) have Jim Johnson working for me----actually “not working for me” just doing labor for me---yes, Jim actually got several of those below market value loans from Countrywide…but it’s different as he got “special treatment” and that’s okay. Obama came down on Hillary Clinton for having one of her campaign advisers working for Countryside---well that was different then. It’s No Big Deal because Jim Johnson has quit now so he will not drag down my outstanding judgment in asking him to help with some manual labor ---of course he gets no pay, well now, maybe after I am elected, he will be added to my administration.

We will GET OVER IT! right after we vote President McCain into office. :D
