Fish Don't Fry In the Kitchen, Beans Don't Burn On the Grill

June 18, 2008 8:03 AM

I'm not sure a First Lady candidate ever made me laugh before. (Not intentionally,  at any rate.)

But here's Michelle Obama in today's New York Times, talking about the apparently false "whitey" rumor:

"You are amazed sometimes at how deep the lies can be. I mean, 'whitey'? That's something that George Jefferson would say. Anyone who says that doesn't know me. They don't know the life I've lived. They don't know anything about me."

It sounds like a black exploitation Hollywood movie or show. Anyone who knows black people knows we don't even USE that kind of slur.

The Republicans need to meet and develop relationships with enough AAs that they can figure out how we really sound when we talk to each other and other people.

T

Obama -- always trying to be something he's not.

Yes, Michelle, and you're no George Jefferson. He never pretended to be somebody he's not. That's what made HIM likeable.

One thing that may contribute to a perception that Michelle Obama is arrogant is her height. As a tall woman myself, I know that throughout my life people found that intimidating, especially the fact that I was taller than most of the men I met.

I hope people don't see her as arrogant because of such superficial things.

It is easy for people to think you are looking down on them when your physique necessitates that.

The campaign that successfully smeared the president that has done more for civil rights in this country in decades and the candidate that has worked aggressively for Blacks and Women throughout her career shouldn't be surprised.

Hey Jake do you think perhaps the Obama campaign is talking in "racial coding" picked up on a subliminal level?

Perhaps we are all wondering if 20 years exposed to Rev Wright (the George Jefferson of the puplit) had any effect at all on the Obama's..

aha

Michelle and Barack Obama are both arrogant and condencending. Barack will say and do anything to get elected and Michelle is not lady-like. If one reads about their background including their professional and political life, you will find that they used people and then tossed them aside. I do not respect neither. They are not honest.

Thanks, Fired Up, for your dissing Jackie Kennedy, who was no role model at all. That breathy, fake Marilyn Monroe voice was just too much. Both Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain are strong women, and while Cindy might have inherited wealth, she has done a lot of good with it, unlike Jackie, who seemed to live to spend money.

What worries me is that men of all races and political persuasions seem to be afraid of strong women. I don't know why, but it sure is nuts, isn't it?

Typing too fast... embarassing because it contradicts his message.

"..Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers..."

That is news if it can be substantiated. That would be the second time the stage managing of his events proved embarassing because they contradict his admission.

Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's head scarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

FIRED UP

You are right, I don't have concrete proof as to what Michelle or Barack actually believe.

But if someone choses and maintains a church for 20 years, it is logical to conclude that they find belief and inspiration in its theology and Barack has said as much about Trinity and Wright.

Perhaps you think the Obamas had a different motive in attending Trinity? If they did not connect with the core theology of the Church, then what was it? Was it the Church's good works (as sometimes suggested by Obama supporters)?

Funny--Cone criticizes the "orientation of white theology toward defending dominant class interests.." He says this is why "white theology...in its efforts for social good does not go beyond the kind of modernizing reformisms (sic) that only shore up the status quo."

What motive would you find sufficient to overcome the objections that they should have felt in response to the racist and hateful message of Trinity, Wright and Cone?

Fired Up!! The rumor about the tape was deciminated by left wing columnist Larry Johnson; and liberal commentator Bob Beckel hinted about this rumor. Rush Limbaugh picked up on the fact that these liberals were spreading this rumor weeks after the rumors surfaced. Then last week the AP reported that it was Rush Limbaugh who was spreading this rumor. That was not true!

P.S. Um, yeah, and I REALLY think that if we are going to compare potential First Ladies and the lives they have led, I will take Michelle Obama's resume over Cindy McCain's every time.

Funny how all that drug innuendo everyone was throwing at Obama has magically vanished - couldn't have anything to do with Cindy McCain's status as a former addict and thief could it? Of course not.

Michelle Obama is GREAT! :)

Love, love, love her - she is EVERYTHING a first lady should be: smart, funny, and strong! Senator and Mrs. Obama have a beautiful family, and the White House will be a happier place when they move in - and I can't wait! :)

No need to waste a lot of time and negative energy with her detractors - you don't have to like Mrs. Obama if you don't want to, after all - she's not running for President! lol

FIRED UP

Get a grip. Thinking Americans don't fear a powerful black woman. We do fear (and have every right and reason to fear and oppose) someone who ascribes to a racist theology in a position of power.

Read James Cone. Listen to Jeremiah Wright. Then ask yourself, with all the options available, why did the Obamas chose this theology and this church? Racism is wrong, without regard to the color of the racist.

"There will be no peace in America until whites begin to hate their whiteness, asking from the depths of their being: 'How can we become black?'" --James Cone, A Black Theology of Liberation

It is simple. They are basing it on the stupid assumption that a black woman cannot not, under any circumstances, be successful. And they wonder why Michlle Obama said America can be mean. Amazing.

These people fear a powerful black woman. Period.

Posted by: Fired UP!! | Jun 18, 2008 10:38:36 AM

She got into schools she didn't deserve to get into,
Wrong. Princeton is one of the most difficult schools in the country to get into. Michelle Obama is an extremely smart woman.

she got jobs ONLY because her husband was a politician
She got her first job at a major law firm before she even met Senator Obama.

and she makes a load of money ONLY
because her husband is a US Senator.
And what do you base that assessment on? More of your "I'm just makin' it up" mindset?

And she's married to a guy who has not ever taken a single position which required guts in his entire life.
Oh really. Running for president as the first biracial candidate in American history doesn't require guts?

How's that not privilege?
It's not privilege. It's hard work.

And maybe you should start reading more....

Michelle Obama is a wonderful example to my daughter and every American girl.
Work hard and stay focused and you can succeed.

Smart, independent, classy, and unafraid.

I hope my daughter grows up to be just like that!!

Posted by: Ohenry | Jun 18, 2008 10:27:56 AM

nancy,

This is 2008, not 1960. Michelle Obama is an intelligent accomplished woman who wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth, unlike Jackie Kennedy.

Michelle Obama is a much more relevant role model for todays girls than Jackie.

Posted by: Fired UP!! | Jun 18, 2008 10:26:57 AM

And then when the "whitey" tape finally does come out (or something similar), Obama will reply "That is not the Michelle I used to know"....

LOL.
