In City of Brotherly Love, McCain Recalls Obama "Bitter" Comments

June 11, 2008 8:20 PM

At a town hall meeting in Philadelphia today, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., recalled the remarks Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, made in April about suffering small town Pennsylvanians turning "bitter" and clinging to guns, religion, and bigotry.

(Remember that?)

The topic came up when McCain predicted to the supportive crowd that he can win Pennsylvania this November by traveling to small towns throughout the state.

"I’m going to tell them I don't agree with Senator Obama that they cling to their religion and the Constitution because they’re bitter," McCain said, per ABC News' Bret Hovell. " I'm going to tell them they have faith and they have trust and support the Constitution of the United States because they have optimism and hope and are the strength of America."

Obama apologized for his comments, saying he spoke clumsily, but both McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, pounced upon them as evidence of Obama's elitism.

"That's what America is all about," McCain continued, "the people who love our country, who cherish their religion and support the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. And that’s the message and that’s another reason why we’re going to win the state of Pennsylvania, next November the 4th."

Heralding his ability to work in a bipartisan fashion in Congress, McCain joked about reaching out to Senator Hillary Clinton’s myriad supporters in the state now that she has dropped out of the race.

"I know how to sit down and reach across the aisle," he said. "I will attract independents, Democrats - by the way, those supporters of Senator Clinton, I welcome you here today."

The crowd laughed appreciatively.

McCain is not too bright. Maybe once he masters reading,I can actually listen to him. As a service members wife, I find it very sad that any one would vote for someone that would keep this war going. If they are WINNING bring them home. I wish that everyone was this critical of Bush then maybe the families would still have their sons and daughters. Its funny that we would ride the same old ride again. When do we except people for who they really are.I have nothing against McCain butI am not going to watch my husband fight this pointless war. I guess when our death toll raises even more then we will just start complaining again. To some its "BLACK MAN" or DEATH. Some choose death. Im not bitter, I dont even think theres a word to describe my feeling. :-)

Dennis in Orlando, FL, you wrote: "Doesn't affect the price of gas, unemployment, healthcare cost, etc. You really think McCain or any other Republican/Conservative cares about any of that? You small town folks are hurting and will keep on hurting if you let another Republican in the White House because your emotions are clouding your judgment."

It has been the Republicans who have spent the last 20 years attempting to open up new drilling, building new refineries and new nuclear plants so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil. But the Democrats continue to block these. Just the other day the Democrats once again blocked the efforts of the Republicans to open up drilling 50-200 miles off shore. Yet China is drilling 60 miles off Florida right now.

Electing Democrats will only raise the price of gasoline even higher with their $1-$3 increase in the federal tax on gasoline. Democrats have always wanted Americans to pay the same for our gasoline that Europeans pay for theirs ($6-$8). It will be 20 years before alternative fuels can fully replace gasoline. So without an increase in the supply of gasoline we can only expect much higher costs. One report envisions $15 per gallon in just the next 5-10 years.

Electing Democrats with their tax, tax, spend, tax, tax, spend, tax, tax, spend philosophy coupled with their disdain for Corporate America, will decimate the free market (with federal interference) and severely cripple small businesses (by raising taxes and mandating 50% fewer emissions). This will cause a huge spike in unemployment.

Electing Democrats will bankrupt the country. We are already on the verge of bankruptcy with the current entitlement programs (Social Security and Medicare) unless they are reformed. Yet the Democrats want to add new very expensive entitlements (i.e., implement womb-to-tomb universal health care and free college for everyone). In order to pay for these programs the Democrats want to raise the taxes on those individuals who are making $250,000. That will also raise the taxes on small businesses. But at the same time the Democrats are saying they want to give tax breaks to the middle class. This will take money away from the new entitlement programs. So they will have to raise taxes even higher for the wealthiest Americans. This is wealth re-distribution!

So who's emotions are clouding whose judgement?

same OLD,

You do realize that McCain wants to give Exxon/Mobil a 1.5 BILLION tax break, right? Which make perfect sense to me, since Exxon is struggling right now and we Americans should give as much of our tax money as possible to be sure Exxon stays solvent.

Actually, Obama lost the economic war.

He signed the juicy Oil bill introduced by Cheney.

This gave the oil companies a whole pile of givaways. Consumers are shocked and are finally hearing about it.

Obama says he cant do anything about the high price of gas. He refuses to drill , and says we should just all suck it up and drive less.

Pretty easy to say when you make 300k a year in salaries plus millions from book sales I suppose.

As a 30 year democrat this will be fun see the chosen ONE lose the same as McGovern in 1972.
I was too young to remember that time in 1972, but this will be a chance for me to see the same effect in the GE.

Hubby got laid off because his company out sourced overseas. His oldest son can't help contribute to the house hold income, because he is in Iraq.
While hubby sits at home going over the bills on the kitchen table. mom and sis go to church, hoping God might hear them.
NO MATTER HOW YOU TRY TO TWIST IT FOR YOUR OWN PERVERTED GAIN, THIS IS WHAT ALOT OF THE BACK BONE OF AMERICA IS DEALING WITH. tHIS IS WHAT THEY MIGHT FEEL BITTER (and helpless) ABOUT.

I COULD TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU McCAIN, BUT I STILL DON'T THINK YOU'D UNDERSTAND IT, OR CARE, OR "THINK IT'S IMPORTANT."

pt
i would have a problem supporting someone who spent 5 years in a vietnam prison camp--as most still have mental issues--and yes that is serious as MCcains temper shows some sort of problem--something he tries to cover with his mild mannered front.

Posted by: rodney | Jun 12, 2008 7:56:41 AM

MCcain has to be a total idiot---small town pa is bitter------when all your jobs have gone to mexico or wallmart china you need to be bitter---however they are also idiots as they spend what little they have in junkstore wallyworld.and never have anything.

I have to agree with John Murtha, the Real straight-talker. The Presidentcy is no place for an OLD man, especially an OLD man that is noted for his uncontrollable temper tantrums. Obama 2008!!!

Hey Hope.

Do you think the dems CARE if Obama can do the job or not?

If they did, he wouldnt be the nominee.

Posted by: same old | Jun 12, 2008 4:38:24 AM

How many of you have changed the party from Democrat to Republican?

Posted by: stock_craft | Jun 12, 2008 3:21:41 AM

Hopesprings52,

Obama did manage to get that Anti-Lobby bill passed in the Senate.

Posted by: DemsUnited | Jun 12, 2008 3:19:07 AM

Harry Reid said yesterday that Obama is an "All-Star". Will somebody please tell me what Obama has accomplished or done in his few years in the Senate that makes him an All-Star? With all the talent the Dems have, this rookie legislator who never held a meeting of his Foreign Affairs Subcommittee is an All-Star? It just doesn't make sense.

Voters will begin to reject Obama (and his wife) as soon as they figure out the Obamas are racist Marxist elites set out to destroy America.

Posted by: One_American | Jun 12, 2008 1:26:33 AM

Obama is the demagogue who want to bring in change without telling what the change is.

Pandered to Rev. Wright to get the black vote.
Pandered to the elites and lunatic leftwing of the democratic party by removing Flag pin.
Pandered to the Iowa voters by removing his name from the Michigan Ballot.
Never worked in a bipartisan fashion except on small potato legislation.

The main stream media folks are not talking about this because they are in the tank for Obama. Shame on them. It is time to change the faces of the main stream media analysts. Throw them out. Real change is that. We need journalists who are not partisan scoundrels.

Sadly, the “straight talk” McCain is turning out to be an opportunist demagogue, just like his brethren in the Republican primary ensemble. How sad.

Trying to decide between Obama and McCain is like which rotten apple to eat. One just wants to walk away and go hungry. Neither can solve our problems. VERY SAD AFFAIR

Dumb post!

Mccain's economic plan... while not as complete as Hillary's... is a lot more friendly to the poor and middle class than Bozo's is.....

Black or white, we're all hurting (except for the CEOs of Exxon and Mobil.
We NEEd some help here.... and Obama's plan is a mish mash of myopic money words symbolizing no help at all!

It's one thing to vote for a president because the color of his skin matches yours..... but it's quite another to
cut off your nose to provide a "new look"!

There are plenty of Hillary's supporters in these blogs... Hopefully they will find a way to take this travesty of an election to the convention. Should that not work,, you will hear the sound of high heels and sneakers walking further and further away...... to Republican Lane.

Your argument is defective and senile. (Isn't that the Obama blogger's
word of the week?)

The change you chant about will take us back sixty years.

Unless you are outrageously rich, you'd be a fool to bet on B O.... but it's your perogative.

The DNC is broken!
