McCain Adviser: Terrorist Attack Would Help McCain in Election
June 23, 2008 4:05 PM
McCain adviser Charlie Black told Fortune Magazine that national security events help Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
"The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an 'unfortunate event,' says Black. 'But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us.' As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. 'Certainly it would be a big advantage to him,' says Black."
Per ABC News' Bret Hovell, McCain distanced himself from the remarks today.
"I cannot imagine why he would say it," McCain said. "It’s not true. I’ve worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another attack on the United States of America. My record is very clear. The Armed Services Committee, and pieces of legislation. Sponsoring with Joe Lieberman the 9/11 Commission so we could find out the causes and how to fix the challenges that we face to fix the security of our nation. I cannot imagine it. And, uh. So, I would … If he said that, and I do not know the context, I strenuously disagree."
Regardless of McCain distancing himself from Black's sentiment, Democratic consultants have said similar things to me.

UPDATE: Hovell reports that outside McCain’s Fresno fundraiser, Black read a statement: “I deeply regret the comments—they were inappropriate. I recognize that John McCain has devoted his entire adult life to protecting his country.”

Trouble with 2008 election is that McCain can't generate excitement, and Obama can't generate confidence.
After 3 sentences about either, there is little more to say.
Overnight Americans recognized we aren't going to have a President even if there is an election; just a mere Chairman of the Board, easily dismissed and easily replaceable.

It struck me as being similar to HRC saying her supporters were hard-working, uh, white people. It is true that white people did support her. The problem was there were white people who supporter Obama.
Here, Black says if an unfortunate terrorist event happens, then McCain will get the most support. True, he was able to talk knowledgeably when Bhutto was assassinated. It is also true that alot of voters think Republicans have a lock on security and military affairs.
The flip side is also true, Democrats like Biden know a great deal about security and military affairs too. The difference is in how many Democrats are willing to negotiate before we come down to arms. People don't trust Republicans to back away once they've made bad choices with arms.
What is the deal about Grenada? What about Beirut barracks? How was that first Gulf War and Hussein---the Iraqi people having problems with their economy since that war? When do they know how to isolate and contain until a regime gives up or dies out without putting American soldiers in harms way?

In the Chicago Tribune today: June 23 2008
Obama made an outrageous statement:
He meant it as a joke, but when Barack Obama recently parodied a famous line from "The Untouchables" he also dredged up the reputation of his longtime home as a place that is rough, raw and unlikely to breed reform.
"If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun," Obama said during a Philadelphia fundraiser, explaining the Chicago-style approach to hard-nosed politics.
Obama is risky and scary.

@nat: "Allow me to provide a quick lesson and definition of racism. This is on the house.."
Hey Nat, a lesson in semiotics: words mean what people say they mean. See S.I. Hayakawa et al.
If the institutional meaning of racism is at odds with the popular use, popular use wins. It's called semiotic drift, a characteristic of living languages.
So yes, people of any origin can be racist by the popular definition of the word.

Republicians have nothing to compete on........I think we should do a COUNTDOWN to see how long it takes for the Republicians to raise the terror alert level...they will do it...All they have is FEAR MONGERING, nothing else

Just because Osama declared war on us was no reason to retaliate. Duh
We are killing his soldiers.

Black essentially said that McCain has a good record preventing and handling terrorist crises, and that current events related to terrorism give him an advantage. It's a true statement: he's a party-transcending patriot who does everything in his power to protect America. Am I missing something?
Bush had some vision but failed to execute due to poor consideration and planning. McCain has a stronger core philosophy - far more nationalistic and less partisan - and has a history of preponderance, leadership, and critical and strategic planning. Obama is an established liberal who seizes upon every opportunity to exploit and pander. It seems like a no-brainer to elect McCain; unfortunately, it appears roughly 50% of America indeed has no brain.
This could be problematic if it develops into a trend.

"Looking at these comments remindes me of the 1930's and over 400.000 dead American soldiers because we talked instead of attacking first."
Actually in the 30s and 40s we had the moral authority to attack and chose not to. In this case we invaded another country on false evidence and used torture, under Bush we have lost the moral authority. Not only that, but attacking Iraq made the U.S. no safer. It eliminated the counterbalance to Iran and Iraq was not a friend to al Qaida, so this had little to do with terrorism and nothing to do with 9/11. The one thing it did do was eliminate Saddam's payments to Palistinian suicide bombers in Israel, but now Israel is in more danger from Iran. As long as we have troops in Iraq, we will have deaths, we will never get to the place we currently enjoy in Japan or Germany, two totally different situations.

In CA court there are people on trial for torture, they are the very acts President Bush has admitted he gave permission for. If these men are found guilty of torture, then Bush is an admitted war criminal. Somewhere, in some jurisdiction, he will be charged, a sad day in American history. Not a Bush fan, but for the sake of the country I hope it never comes to pass, to see a President even charged in a world court is not good for anyone. For America the best thing is if he just slinks away.

Hope & Optimism are a false mantle swaddling the most Marxist candidate
ever to run for President.
Sad to say it, but this Republican would settle for JFK compared to the dunderhead buffet we've been served. (Except the psychotic left would chase that Catholic right out of the DNC convention hall- he'd be FAR too conservative for today's liberals!)
In short... the problem isn't the candidates, its the electorate. We're getting what we deserve.

Mike,
Are you still seriously giving the Gipper the credit for the collapse of the Soviet Union just because he gave a speech? The Cold War lasted 40 years and all the policy before it that wore down the Soviets doesn't count? Oh yeah, I guess in the realm of ideologues it doesn't. Tear down this myth! I guess the Afghans had nothing to do with bleeding the great beast either.

"Suing or trying a terrorist in court is the most insane answer I have ever heard from Obama and the liberal Supreme Court backed him up with its recent decision!"
Geesh Searching4abrain needs to do a lot more searching because it is obvious he didn't understand the Supreme Court ruling. Maybe learn to read and think for yourself and stay away from Faux News as your source of information. The court ruled you can't hold someone in prison forever without a reason, not that they had to have a civilain trial, but that they could challenge the legality of holding someone indefinately. Without this protection, the government could hold anyone forever if they wanted to. The court, in a 5-4 ruling, said that Padilla petitioned for a writ of habeas corpus — asking a judge to determine whether or not he was imprisoned lawfully (not if he is guilty or innocent), but 8 of the 9 Justices ruled against the Bush Administration on some grounds. So even setting aside the Habeas Corpus, 8 judges still found fault with Bush's methods.

Gars,
Who's policies brought down the Berlin Wall and effectively ended the Cold War?
Oh thats right. It was Reagan.
Thanks for Playing.

The Republicans are calling Obama a racist to defect attention from McCain's advisor ridiculous comments.
McCain should fire this man and if he does not the American people should question his judgement.
These comments were uncalled for and should be taken very serious.

Poor old "Some guy", he got it completely wrong! Obviously a Dem. FDR did not win WWII, the US generals like Patton and MacArthur did! FDR didnt really even want to fight, but he had no option after Pearl. Worse, a sick FDR GAVE AWAY Eastern Europe to Stalin at Yalta, causing a Cold War that lasted 44 years! JFK and Cuba? Well, he started off well, by forcing Kruschev to back down, but, we later found out that Kennedy secretly removed US Bomarc missiles from Turkey in exchange! So it was a draw. Clinton?? Please, heaven help us! Sure, people were tried for the WTC bombing in 1993 (not 1991), but that wasn't done by Clinton? It was the FBI and other agencies. Clinton actually was indirectly responsible for 9/11 because he didn't do enough against al Qaeda! He ignored the Cole bombing, he ignored the bombing of US embassies in E Africa! All he did was use cruise missiles to stir up some dust in Afghanistan, as a public PR show. Pity al Qaeda had long since departed. Clinton had 7 years to sort out AQ, from 1993 to 2001, but he did virtually nothing. America can thank only Pres Bush for no more terrorism on US soil. He tightened up security drastically, created the DHS, monitored terrorist communications, monitored terrorist financing and a whole host of similar measures. Many of these measures were bitterly contested by the dumb Dems too! Finally, he took the battle to the ME, Iraq and Afghanistan, thereby diverting AQ away from the US! In terms of keeping the US safe, Bush is a hero! And now that the US is winning hands down in Iraq too, the whining leftists have been shown up for what they are: weak, effete and totally incapable of being entrusted with the responsibilities of Commander-in-Chief! Imagine a US being governed by Moveon.org? Your worst nightmare!

Becky- The ONLY people who have played the race card are the Democrats. For Obama to claim that McCain and the Republicans will attack him because "oh, by the way, he's black" (Obama's snide words) is blatant race-baiting. I defy you to find on e example of McCain or any prominent Republican making an issue of race. I'll name 4 Democrats who have done so in this race: Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Barrack Obama. Obama has revelaed himself to be another shameless demagogue in the recent tradition of most Democrat presidential candidates.

ISn't this remark from the guy who worked as a lobbyest for Iran? Man if there is an attack conspiracy nuts will have a field day saying it was all planned so republicans could win the election. They have connections to the people who would be doing the attacking or supporting it. And lets face it, a McCain presidency would be in the best interest of the terrorists and Iran. McCain is the best recruitment tool they would have, 1000 years in their holy land? McCain is better for recruitment then Bush.
