McCain's VP Vetter Vetted Bork
June 11, 2008 10:01 AM
As attorney and former lobbyist A.B. Culvahouse vets the vice presidential picks of presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., an interesting footnote from his time as President Ronald Reagan's White House counsel -- Culvahouse was one of the vetters of ill-fated Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork.
As this TIME magazine story from 1987 describes: "At a Washington hotel Wednesday morning, White House Counsel Arthur B. Culvahouse interrogated Bork over coffee to satisfy himself that the potential nominee had no awkward club memberships, dubious financial dealings or medical problems."
Bork ultimately was not confirmed by the Senate, receiving the largest margin of defeat ever for a U.S. Supreme Court nominee.
That of course was not because of awkward club memberships, dubious financial dealings or medical problems, but because of Bork's ideology and his disastrous testimony.
Still. Interesting.

It would be a great shame if Bork was denied but Hillary was approved to the Supreme Court. Bork was well qualified.
