More on that Obama-Lieberman Talk
June 10, 2008 10:15 AM
We reported last week that the private talk. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was seen having with Sen. Joe Lieberman, Ind.-Conn., was somewhat intense, dealing with how far Lieberman, who caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate, is willing to go in his advocacy for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Newsweek fleshes out another detail, that according to an Obama campaign aide, "Obama told Lieberman he was surprised by Lieberman's personal attacks and his half-hearted denials of the false rumors that Obama is a Muslim." The aide characterized Lieberman as "strangely muted" in response.
A Lieberman aide tells ABC News that "rather than being 'strangely muted' as the Obama staffer claimed - Lieberman responded to Obama that he always told anyone who raised this rumor that Obama is a Christian."
The Lieberman aide refers to a February story in the New York Observer in which Lieberman says of the Muslim rumor, "The one time that I confronted it, I was campaigning in Florida for Senator McCain. I spoke to a large group and a man stood up and asked me about it, or he referenced it. And I said, of course, that I know Senator Obama pretty well. Obviously one’s religion is a matter of choice. Everything I knew said he was Christian. So, I don’t know how widespread it is but that’s the one time I confronted it. And of course the most important thing is that Senator Obama said it’s just not true.”
I don't know that -- from Obama's point of view -- Lieberman saying, "Obviously one's religion is a matter of choice. Everything I knew said he was a Christian" constitutes the kind of denial of the rumor that Obama would hope to have. (Shades of Sen. Hillary Clinton's assertion that Obama isn't Muslim "as far as I know.")
Either way the Lieberman team sees this whole controversy as unseemly.
“If the Obama campaign thinks they are going to intimidate Joe Lieberman with these sleazy tactics then they are sorely mistaken," the Lieberman aide says.

Leiberman is just a hack. I don't particulary care if he's a Democrat, Independent, or Republican. The guy just doesn't have any moral standing.
Old school, will say anything anytime to get elected. I trust him less than Bush, and that says a lot.

Joe Lieberman ran for Senate in 2006 on the pledge that he would fight to get a Democrat in the White House in 2008, and many CT voters took him at his word. Then Obama stayed away conspicuously didn't show up to campaign for Lamont, after pleas from Lieberman's staff. So he lied to get elected, then stabbed Obama in the back and now he's defending McCain at every turn and offering half-hearted "as far as I know"-type "defenses" of Obama's Christianity. Classy guy.

Nancy Pelosi is up for reelection in November, how do we stop her from being reelected?
Joe Lieberman is an Independent and he could caucus wherever he pleases and with whomever.
Stop being such Dictators.
Remember The Good for the Country always before any political party.

What is wrong with the DNC? Why do they want Obama as our next President? It is so obvious to voters we don't have a say in this process. What kind of power Does this "man" have that he can sway people of intelligence? I am amazed that we have so much wrong with a candidate but he breezes thru the process like a "god" that can do no wrong..... GAWD!!!!!!!! we need to wake up America.. hear, see, speak no evil? We better get our heads out of the sand while we still have a chance to right this wrong. McCain may not be what we hoped for.. but he sure has more integrity than the other choice. Maybe the Independent party will still offer some hope

Whan Obama's 15 minutes of fame fades into reality --America will see that he is just a dirty politician.
The DNC bought Obama and he willingly sold his soul for power and fame.
America loses unless we vote McCain.

Getting in Lieberman's face is just good politics. Americans don't like the little weasel. They don't like his constipated whine of a voice, his fake good cheer, the let the "dumb goyim" die in Iraq because it's "good for the Jews" politics. Gore lost the entire South as well as Arkansas and W. Virginia and much of it had to do with his choice of VP. Name the State where Lieberman got him votes. Take another look at Lieberman's '04 Presidential run. He is not liked, trusted, or highly regarded. It's not out and out anti-Semitism as it is anti-Lieberman, but Lieberman presents himself as a man of faith and most Americans see him instead as the venal little phony he is.

"Somebody needs to wash a dirty slap across that ugly Lieberman's face. Judas!"
Change we can believe in.

"I applaud Obama for having a concern and facing it straight on. He didn't go whine to the press."
Um, except he "whined" to Newsweek afterwards. And Newsweek, being a good little Obama propaganda organ, didn't even bother getting Lieberman's side of the story.

Rhbate, you wrote: "Even the president of the United States is not above the law."
I totally agree. But when it comes to waterboarding the three detainees, Bush is on solid ground. The 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force, Sec. 2 (a) states: "IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons."
And with regards to the Invasion of Iraq, Congress authorized that as well in the 2002 Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq. Google it! Read the entire resolution.

FoxNews, CNN and several local stations have covered various different anti-war demonstrations and showed individuals being waterboarded right there on the street. Just Google it!
Now as for the impeachment of President Bush, you are right it will never come to fruition. They really don't have a case. Everything they accuse President Bush of doing is really bogus. Speaker Pelosi is letting the reading go on because she wants to be re-elected in November. Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is attempting to get her name on the ballot this November so she can unseat Speaker Pelosi.

Joe Lieberman has been a slime ball goin back to the 1990s. I wish Ned Lamont defeated him back in '04.
If I could have voted in 2000 I would have voted for Bush just because Lieberman was the ticket. I can't stand the traitor.

Joe Lieberman just knows a lightweight phony when he sees one.

Regarding Lieberman's statement and Hillary's "as far as I know??" - Jake, please, watch the video of the Hillary interview. Please. I wish you would not repeat mischaracterizations of her words. She said "no" several times and the interviewer kept pressing her, and "as far as I know" was an expression of incredulity on why a journalist would press her to make a statement on another persons' religious beliefs after she'd said "no" several times. This is crazy - I am no fan of Lieberman but how else can he answer the same question, other than to say what he has heard? Can he presume to make an absolute, declarative statement about another person's religion? Who can? Come on. What's really happening here is that the Obama campaign can't function without a scapegoat to constantly accuse of the most heinous crimes, and now that they won't have Hillary for a time, they've moved on to Lieberman - who the netroots have always enjoyed trashing just as much.

Now then, it is ironic that the anti-war protesters waterboard dozens of individuals during many anti-war demonstrations.

I have never heard of "anti-war protesters waterboarding dozens of individuals during anti-war demonstrations." If you have information to this effect, I would suggest you notify the relevant authorities.
As I said, Articles of Impeachment are at this moment being read by Congressman Dennis Kucinish. Charges include high crimes and misdeanors: torture, violation of his Constitional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully adhered to. Nothing will happen as a result of these charges because Bush will not be in office by the time the charges are referred to the judicial committee.

Torture: The United States' official policy does not condone torture. However, the President of the United States may grant exceptions for extra ordinary circumstances.

Rhbate:
Spying: The 14th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution protects American citizens against "unreasonable" searches and seizures without a warrant. It does not say "all" searches and seizures. Therefore, this amendment implies that there is such a thing as reasonable searches and reasonable seizures that do not require a warrant. What could be more reasonable than to search and seize communications between the enemy abroad and anyone here at home during wartime?
Torture: The United States' official policy does not condone torture. However, the President of the United States may grant exceptions for extra ordinary circumstances. Waterboarding was performed on THREE of the detainees. And information critical to the government's efforts to understand the inner-workings of al Qaeda and preventing further attacks was obtained through this procedure. Now then, it is ironic that the anti-war protesters waterboard dozens of individuals during many anti-war demonstrations.

PS to @ Jun 10, 2008 8:23:18 PM (“wonder why Lieberman switched to Republicans”. (Sic.)
Lieberman was defeated in the Democratic primary for his senate seat, and switched to INDEPENDENT in order to qualify for the general election ballot and retain his office.
He IS NOT a Republican.
