More on that Obama-Lieberman Talk

June 10, 2008 10:15 AM

We reported last week that the private talk. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was seen having with Sen. Joe Lieberman, Ind.-Conn., was somewhat intense, dealing with how far Lieberman, who caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate, is willing to go in his advocacy for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Newsweek fleshes out another detail, that according to an Obama campaign aide, "Obama told Lieberman he was surprised by Lieberman's personal attacks and his half-hearted denials of the false rumors that Obama is a Muslim." The aide characterized Lieberman as "strangely muted" in response.

A Lieberman aide tells ABC News that "rather than being 'strangely muted' as the Obama staffer claimed - Lieberman responded to Obama that he always told anyone who raised this rumor that Obama is a Christian."

The Lieberman aide refers to a February story in the New York Observer in which Lieberman says of the Muslim rumor, "The one time that I confronted it, I was campaigning in Florida for Senator McCain. I spoke to a large group and a man stood up and asked me about it, or he referenced it. And I said, of course, that I know Senator Obama pretty well. Obviously one’s religion is a matter of choice. Everything I knew said he was Christian. So, I don’t know how widespread it is but that’s the one time I confronted it. And of course the most important thing is that Senator Obama said it’s just not true.”

I don't know that -- from Obama's point of view -- Lieberman saying, "Obviously one's religion is a matter of choice. Everything I knew said he was a Christian" constitutes the kind of denial of the rumor that Obama would hope to have. (Shades of Sen. Hillary Clinton's assertion that Obama isn't Muslim "as far as I know.")

Either way the Lieberman team sees this whole controversy as unseemly.

“If the Obama campaign thinks they are going to intimidate Joe Lieberman with these sleazy tactics then they are sorely mistaken," the Lieberman aide says.

Nobody with a brain believes Obama was going to punch Lieberman's lights out, and Joe may not be all one might wish, but he does have a brain. He knew when he entered politics that he'd be ticking off a lot of taller men. And there's not a hell of a lot Obama can do about being taller than Joe Lieberman. What's he supposed to do -- scrunch down?

Sunny, I can't speak for Seah. But what concerns me about Sen. Obama is that I don't believe that an individual can be member of a church, financially support a church, and raise your children in a church for 20 years and NOT believe the tenants of that church. The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright has admitted that his preachings were based, in part, on the works of James Cone, the "recognized pioneer" of Black Liberation Theology. Sen. Obama can believe in whatever he wants. But if he does believe in Black Liberation Theology, then THAT is scary! Google it!

@3:56:42 PM:

Lyndon B. Johnson was definitely "thuggish" in his behavior—and crude as well.

Can you imagine the "next president of the United State" get caught on one of video clips showing Trinity church's members cheering, laughing, and clapping hands when Rev Wright was shouting "God D America"????

Jackie @ 1:20...got it right/Wright. His tolerance for hate talk, against our country, whites, and jews makes him unacceptable for President. You don't sit somewhere for 20 years and read the ideology and now try and get a pass, by kicking them one by one under the bus (Farrakhan, Wright, Trininty, Hamas). What's next, Michelle? (if and when a tape comes out on her). As Wright said....Obama says what he HAS TO as a Politician....yeah...he's new politics...NOT. GO McCAIN! (Liberman too)

Once Lieberman shows up as John McCain's running mate, we won't have to worry about who he caucuses with ... then again, maybe he's too powerful in his Senate position now to give it up for the VP uncertainty. It doesn't look that good for McCain really.

RE: More on Obama’s Jay-Z 99-Problems Reference:

See the Huffington Post, "At Obama Victory Event, Campaign Played Jay-Z's 99 Problems (But A Bitch Ain't One)"

"PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama claims to run a clean campaign, but someone in his camp took a swipe at Hillary Clinton through the candidate's theme song.
As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z's "99 Problems" was blaring. In it, Jay raps, "I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."

Some listeners took it as a not-so-sly reference to Hillary."

This was in January, 2008, prior to the Senator from Chiago brushing the dirt off his shoulders at the April, 2008 campaign appearance.

"My point is that for a 6'4" candidate (Obama) to resort to physical intimidation of a much shorter man (Lieberman) by backing him against the wall and towering over him while “getting in his face” about a speech is “thuggish” behavior, unbecoming a President."

Guess you don't remember Lydon B. Johnson. Or was he a 'thug' too?

So glad McCain has Lieberman to help him shore up Florida! All of Hillary supporters there are behind McCain now too.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Democratic Rep. Dan Boren of Oklahoma said Tuesday Barack Obama is "the most liberal senator" in Congress and he has no intention of endorsing him for the White House.

All right Obamabots -go tear into Boren.

Voter, you make a lot of sense. There are so many sickos on this board and others who obsess about a person's religion when the real concern should center on the policies and leadership capability of the candidates.Obama simply scares some people who won't admit why they harbor disdain.Fortunately, i believe most Americans have had it with the GOP and are clearly yearning for change.

I see Obama thinks he can pull the victim card at all times. What a baby!

Considering Obama's legions of supporters spilling anti-Jew bile on Kos, DU and even Obama's own website

He should be grateful to Lieberman for that much. Joe should have just told him to go Ned Lamont himself.

What "personal attacks" did Senator Lieberman launch against Obama ACCORDING TO THE OBAMA AIDE?

Does the media ever follow up on Obama???????

Posted by: geevill | Jun 10, 2008 1:38:30 PM

Obama shyster tactics are getting to be very old news. his campaign did a similar tactic to Bill Clinton by twisting Bill's words and meanings. And then told Bill he needed to stay off the campaign trail and then called Chelsea a pimp for her mother. Give me a break from this incredible nonsense. He is not only too liberal, he is immature and a liar in his tactics. If this is not Obama's doing then he needs to fire someone on his campaign staff for making him look like an idiot! Go Lieberman and keep on supporting McCain!

Lydia What world do you live in?
How do you think Obama's campaign survived before all those small donors came on board? Obama has taken money from JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, UBS,
Exxon Mobil, British Petroleum, Exelon and on and on. Lobbyist money only makes up about only 1% of the campaign funds of those who take such money. Politicians don't like to take "lobbyist" money anymore but they don't have a problem with taking money from "advisors" to lobbyists and "bundled" money from the friends and family of lobbyists. This includes Obama. Obama is a corporate candidate just like the others and in fact in this election it's the Dems who are the Wall Street Darlings, not the Repubs for a change . Obama is as beholden to special interests as any other candidate. We certainly saw that in Illinois when he wrote a bill which initially represented the better interests of the residents when there was a radioactive leak from the plant of his fourth largest contributor, Exelon (the Country's largest nuclear power producer) and then he turned around and rewrote the bill to accomodate Exelon and the nuclear regulators and the Repubs. You need to keep in mind politicians (both parties)
rely on the American public's unwillingness to inform themselves on the issues and as such Obama can convince people such as yourself and others (including myself) that all his money has come from small donors (and he has legitimately broken records in that respect) because most people have never heard of the FEC
or know what it means when they say they "bundle" money. There is no candidate in this race who represents "new politics" or "change".
It's just business as usual.

My only comment is I find it unseemly that Barack Obama is attacking a Jew when he needs the support of Jews in Florida, NY, and around the country. Of course Jews helped in the civil rights movement but now I guess we don't matter (I'm a Christian, but my late mother was a Jew).

Barack Obama is looking more and more like our very own Democratic Tom DeLay, saying he will "whup" Congress into order.

I won't vote for a man who operates like that.

I also won't vote for a man who can't speak without a script and who seems to blame everyone else for his troubles.

You are right on, Jake. Keep up the good work. You seem to be one of the fairest moderators of blogs on the web I've seen in this whole election cycle.

Why does the Obama campaign consistantly insist everyone else must make sure his religion isn't an issue?

Get out there yourself Obama.

Oh and when they realize the tide isn't in your favor...good luck with those strong arm tactics.

Take it back to Chicago and try and fix that state.

Really, what part of Chicago politics does anyone want in the White House?

They don't even export legislation like CA does regularly.

So, if they can't fix the corruption there or write inspiring legislation, then why would we infect the WH with it?

The release of OB's birth cert should clear the air...or stir things up?
I don't care if he's a Muslim or a pagan. I do care that he's a pandering uberliberal. As far as Liberman goes, the voters of his district saw fit to elect him once again.

what bothers me is the tilt toward retorical violence that many on the left have sunk to. You wanna slap him, call him ugly (I'm sure his momma didn't think so), Call him trash, whatever; go ahead. Just know this, people who rank out others behind the viel of annonimity are resorting to one of the most elementary styles of arguuments. Think; make rational arguments. Don't get all emotional and drag us down into the mud. Bipartisanship! We're all in this together and if YOU don't think so then we have a real problem.
