Nader: Obama trying to "Talk White," Appeal to "White Guilt"

June 25, 2008 7:09 AM

In an interview with the Rocky Mountain News, independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader says the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is trying to "talk white" by downplaying poverty issues.

Nader -- who launched his 5th presidential campaign in February -- says the only thing different about Obama from previous Democratic presidential candidates is his race. "I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos," Nader says. "Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."

Asked if he thinks Obama is trying to "talk white," Nader said, "of course….The number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law," Nader said. "Haven't heard a thing."

Nader also says Obama wants to show he's not "another politically threatening African-American politician. He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up."

An Obama spokeswoman, Shannon Gilson, said "we are obviously disappointed with these very backward-looking remarks."

Obama's skin color aside, on Tuesday, the Nader campaign assailed Obama's decision to support the revised domestic surveillance bill, pointing out that Obama had previously said he would support a filibuster of any bill that included retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies.

But now though Obama says he will try to get retroactive immunity removed from the bill, he will ultimately vote for it either way.

Said the Nader campaign: "Liberal Democrats are surprised and outraged that Obama would flip-flop this way. But we're not surprised. From the beginning, we saw through Obama's 'Change You Can Believe' mantra. Obama is just another corporate candidate. At times, he might sound like a progressive. But he's not. That's why we're here. We're here to give the American people a choice in November."

I think it is sad that Ralph Nader still has a platform to spew his distortion of the truth and ruin America, again. Get out of the way you Republican funded hack. It is so obvious that you are an arm of the RNC and a paid spoiler in a race that is to important to lose again. 2000= Bush
2004= Bush

And now in 2008 this weak man who does the bidding for the Republican party is trying to do it again. Come on, America, how many times will you fall for the same cheap trick?

Nader is a Racist, Nader is a stooge for the RNC and he is working against everything he supports with his attacks on Obama.

OH Ralph, why do you only say bad thing's about Obama and not John McCain? Is it because he is paying you good money to disrupt another Presidential election?

Ralph Nader - This has been a party political announcement on behalf of the has-been party.

I liked the way Ralph Nader spoke. No rhetoric, just plain to-the-point talk.

I hope to hear more from him.

Interesting reporting! -- What you see is Nader finally kicking in with the street-fighter style popularized by HRC months ago. -- There is absolutely nothing that Obama can ever do that will please everyone, so he had better be pleasing himself. -- I am afraid that the damage to our electoral system may be permanent. -- It's unfortunate that Mr. Obama had no choice but to throw a few of his own blows, but that finalized the deal, and forever shifted the news media's focus. -- It has been a very hairy political season, and it's only getting stupider as it drags on. -- I'm so sorry for us.

4GET BILL CLINTON!!!!!!!!

IF HIS OLD LADY RAN A BETTER RACE,AND HE DIDN'T COMPARE OBAMA'S SC VICTORY IN TO JESSE JACKSONS,OR IF SHE DIDN'T MAKE UP THE BULLETS OVER BOSNIA,AND HAD BETTER CAMPAIGN ADVISORS,AND USED HER POWER OF NAME RECOGNITION,AND USE THE GENDER CARD AND RACE CARD WITH HER FRIEND GERALDINE F.,AND IF SHE STOPPED SAYING THINGS PEOPLE WANTED TO HEAR INSTEAD OF TELLING THE TRUTH,AND IF SHE USED GOOD JUDGEMENT AND NOT WENT ALONG WITH EVERYBODY ELSE AND VOTED FOR THE WAR,AND IF SHE DIDN'T GO ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE AND DENOUNCE THE MICH AND FLA PRIMARIES THEN SPEWED ABOUT HOW PEOPLE WERE DISINFRANCHISED BECAUSE SHE NOW NEEDED THE VOTES,THEN,MAYBE SHE WOULD HAVE HAD A HILL OF BEANS TO BE THE DEM NOMINEE,AND MAYBE PRESIDENT..

P.S.,AND IF SHE ONLY MANAGED HER MONEY AND FUNDS RIGHT AND NOT BE IN DEBT AND LOOK FOR OBAMA TO BAIL HER NON-BUDGETING NO HAVING SKILLS OUT,THEN MAYBE SHE WOULD HAVE HAD THE NOMINATION AND WON...

How can any of you call anybody a racist, when Obama is coming out of a 20 year intimate relationship with a racist church? Forget it. Stop playing victims, stop playing naive. Obama is the sham,, and the fraud.

Why would anyone be surprised by what Nader says here, honestly? In Clinton's last year in the White House all of his sycophantic minions were saying he'll be bankrupt from all of the lawsuits against him! What a joke. He handed the keys to this country tp Corporate America and he's now worth upwards of 200 million! How Obama can ask his supporters to help Hillary pay back the ten million she spent out of a sheer need for attention has just changed my vote from Obama to Nader! It's obvious to me now that Obama is going to pull a Clinton and pander to the Clinton's and corporate America to line his own pockets! Excuse me while I get sick.

Can the hardworking, educated, middle and upper class African-Americans get a little love from these type people? If we're college educated, we're trying to be white. If we speak correctly, we're talking white. If we live in nice areas, were uppity. If we overcome extenuating circumstances, pay our own way through honorable educational institutions such as Princeton and Harvard, were affirmative action students with no merit. No love at all? What does people like him want? Will he be okay if we all decided to live poorly, depending on the government, with zero representation? I'm sure it would make for good race related statistical comparisons. Good Grief! Given our country's history though, most of us expected this, so we're moving on anyway! Catch you on the flip side.

This is absolutely discouraging. Part of this election has been about people tearing each other down and talking about issues that do not matter. Ralph Nader is taking a cheap shot because he knows that he can't win.

"WHY IS HE NOT ATTACKING JOHN MCCAIN, I DON'T HEAR JOHN McCAIN TALKING ABOUT the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law."

---

Indeed, why isn't Nader complaining that McCain is "talking white"? Because a) Nader is insensitive to his own racism and b) because he is doing the Republican's bidding, just as he did in 2004 and 2000. Funny that we ONLY hear from Ralph during election season, and we primarily hear him attacking the "lesser evil", giving the greater evil a free pass. Well, not so funny when he TOOK REPUBLICAN MONEY to fund his campaigns.

I didn't realize that health care, the war in Iraq and Energy were "white issues".

"Everybody has the same opportunities"

---

What an incredibly ignorant and dishonest statement. And, in context, racist.

Posted by: truth machine | Jun 25, 2008 7:50:32 PM

I am diffenitly voting for Nader/Gonzalas. I am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils.

----

That is SUCH a stupid statement -- as if Nader were perfect. Every choice you ever make is a selection among "evils" -- or "goods" -- or, more correctly, partial evils and goods. And from a rational stance, voting for Nader rather than Obama fosters evil, since it increases the chances that McCain will be elected (which is considerable), and does nothing for the chances that Nader will be (which is nil).

Posted by: truth machine | Jun 25, 2008 7:48:09 PM

"we haven't heard from Obama speaking directly to the Black community" Yeah, we have actually. Remember? Most recently on Father's Day. And every time he does that's the point where Republicans haul out the race card and say "he'll only be a president for black people". Clearly also African Americans do NOT agree with Nader. Or hadn't Nader noticed.

The lesson to learn from these posts is that there is absolutely not one single reason to vote FOR McCain. So far ALL I have seen from the Republicans is dirty tricks designed to slander Obama, usually while disguised as a Democrat. There hasn't been one positive reason why McCain should be president. Just fantasies attacking Obama. It's a sad reflection of the current state of the Republican party and its entirely lacking candidate.

Posted by: Philosophus | Jun 25, 2008 7:35:05 PM

@js

if obama could be given a truth shot, and asked what is the one thing you regret in your campaign,
he would probally answer,
"the sad fact that i convienced some african americans that bill clinton was a racist."

---
That's some nice racist patronizing there. Many people reached the conclusion that Clinton was playing the race card (NOT that he is racist), all on their own.

Posted by: truth machine | Jun 25, 2008 7:34:35 PM

Good job Ralph. Tell the truth brother. Obama is the epitome of a slime politician. Obamas campaign mantra should be, Lies, Deceit, Inexperience, Poor Judgement, and Racial Hypocricy.

Posted by: Badger1 | Jun 25, 2008 7:28:43 PM

Not only is Nader employing racist themes (demanding that non-whites identify primarily with their ethnicity is very much that) but apparently wants Obama to have as little chance of being elected as Nader does. Obama's ability to make things better -- huge. Nader's ability to make things better -- significant, but all in the past.

Here is a very simple fact: If Obama isn't elected President, McCain will be. Period. Like it or not, that's the way things are. Obama has many flaws, but McCain is far worse on every single issue.

Posted by: truth machine | Jun 25, 2008 7:28:35 PM

The funny thing about this story is that no one is even thinking Nadar right? So, here he comes out and says something ridiculous and "free" advertising that he is actually running. And the Obama campaign is ignoring it as it should.
