Obama Abroad

June 28, 2008 2:26 PM

ABC News has learned that later this summer, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will travel to Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Jordan, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee visited Iraq once before, in 2006.

He will be visiting Iraq and Afghanistan this time along with a congressional delegation, and will follow those visits with a separate international sojourn to the other countries.

Although the official Obama campaign release on the trip didn't mention Iraq or Afghanistan, Obama talked about his upcoming travel along with a congressional delegation to those two countries in an interview with Radio Iowa Saturday.

"In Iraq, my goal is to talk to the Iraqi leadership about making political progress so that we can start phasing down our troops in Iraq," Obama said. "Obviously, I want to congratulate the troops for the extraordinary work they've done in reducing violence there.”

As far as Afghanistan is concerned, Obama said that in some ways things "have been getting a little bit worse."

The presumptive Democratic candidate was also concerned about the troop levels on the ground.

"We don't probably have enough troops there, and we've got to do a better job on the reconstruction side to build the infrastructure that's needed in that country to consolidate long-term gains," he said.

The topics of discussion broadened a bit when Obama turned to his thoughts on Europe from maintaining and "encouraging" military support in areas like Afghanistan, to economic issues and the environment.

"There are certain issues like climate change that can't be addressed without the participation of the Europeans, as well," he said.

Obama also stressed that especially in dealings with nuclear proliferation and Iran, "we've got to act in concert with our allies."

Looks like Bush is at it again. The news just said he has started covert operations in Iran. Yea I want another 4 years of GOP policies. Anyone that thinks the Rep party cares about them is blind to the facts. They do not care about the American people, only about rich americans and big business. The ones thats can throw a lot of money their way. They also only care about giving the GOP more power. How after eight years of this sorry lying President, can anyone want more of the same beats me. The rich keep getting richer and the poor poorer and the middle class are slipping in to poverty. Yea lets have more and vote for McCain. The good news is McCain isnt going to win. Bush will make sure of that.

dean,

I'm enlisted in the Marine Corps, and I can tell you, your son is giving you bad advice.

I'm sure that our grunts will be so happy to see someone who denegrates all of their work and knows nothing about the military. He advocates talking to international thugs with no preconditions but doesn't have the time to spend with General Pratreus. Unlike Bubba Clinton at least he isn't a draft dodger. However, I suspect that he is like most democrats and is contemptuous of the people who stand watch over us.

Obama and transparency----He lies about everything from his birth to his crooked buds. "Watching him"? Watching him jack up taxes so he can grow the government and allow his buds to steal from taxpayers so they can pay him under the table is more like it.

Brian, Corporate America consists of PRIVATE companies which are NOT non-profit organizations. They are in businsess to make a profit. While I, personally, may not like the idea of the CEOs receiving such huge salaries, perks, buyout packages when they depart or pensions upon retirement, that is between the shareholders and board of directors. While the federal government must enforce federal laws (i.e., anti-discrimination laws and OSHA regulations), it should not mandate what a private company does with its profits, nor interfere with its day-to-day operations. There ARE a few corporate officials who are greedy, cut corners and deceive their employees and shareholders. Those corporate officials SHOULD be held accountable for their actions (i.e., criminal acts should be prosecuted). BUT all of Corporate America does not need to be sacrificed -- nor demonized -- because of the actions of a few. Most corporations are very generous contributors to charities and support their local communities.

The thing to watch on these trips is who meets with whom. The American public has been sold out a hundred times to foreign interests. My hope is that Obama will keep all these things as transparent as possible. We will be watching.

Obama, Obama, Obama:

Your travel plan proves that you have NO clue how to protect America from the nuclear terrorists.

You have to visit South Korea and Japan first if you want to protect America.

I oppose the Iraq War, but what Bush did negotiating the deal with North Korea is correct and the right way to deter such nuclear threat.

If you are going to use the foreign-phobia card again, as you did in MI, OH, & WI, 18 million voters whom you just sold for $4600 plus 1.4 million Korean voters in U.S. will not ever vote for you and the Democratic Party.

Enjoy your trip.

For the 100th time, the ISSUE of 2008 is the economy. Obama is bad for the economy because all he wants to do is grow the government so his buddies like Rezko can scam the system at the cost of taxpayers and pay Obama under the table. Atleast McCain has a plan to get energy prices down which will help the economy again instead of taking what little money we have left after paying to fill our cars up and buying groceries to give up our tiny piece of the pie for ghetto druggies as Michele says she wants. Common sense people---it is this simple. If you want to pay alot more for taxes and energy, vote Obama. If you don't, vote McCain.

sen. clinton does not want to be obama'
vp.

i agree she might like all of the media buzz about it,
but she does not want to be obama' vp.
because although she has come out in support of him.
her phil. and the way she would govern are very different from his.

i don't believe sen. clinton, wants to be a part of the direction obama and his crew want to take the country. because it is the wrong way to go.

let caroline kennedy find obama a vp.

sen. clinton does not want it.

she will cont' to do her thing in the senate, and if need be join CGI and continue to do good.

Posted by: w | Jun 29, 2008 1:40:06 PM

I still think Hilliary has forced Obama to make her his VP choice----even after all the ugly things they said about each other.

Posted by: annoyingrabbit | Jun 29, 2008 1:35:08 PM

what i am trying to understand is why are you still talking about sen. clinton at all?

the article is obama abroad, and talks about his trip overseas?
so why talk about sen. clinton good or bad?

sen. clinton made the expected show with obama, and when the time comes, she will go back to her day job, in the senate.

we now have to decide who will be the best president between
mccain and obama.

I disagree with James Danley, as our current subprime, banking, energy, and wallstreet mess, lack of buildout of infrastructure is because of corporate america's stanglehold on our government to prevent fairness or regulation. When you look at the huge hundred million dollar retirement bonuses and tens of millions of dollars of corporate ceo's and even now a billion dollars going to private equity manager/owners its anything but a fair playing field. Leverage, the little dollars for it coming from us, and the Greenspan fed put untold wealth in the hands of a few. Corporations in the meantime went on a feeding frenzy eliminating retirements for workers, health care for many, overtime, lunch breaks, part of vaction, and privacy over their own bodies(urine tests). Corporate America has stalled any infrastructure improvement while advocating our continuing overseas wars while our own country is flooded by illegal immigrants that create a cheaper workforce stifling wage gains for our own people. This is not a liberal argument. Its simply factual. While centrists dont' want big government interfering with their lives they realize that only government can be a countervailing force to push back on corporate excesses. Corporations are run by our most aggressive people and they do at times need to be checked just like a speeder on the highway as its dangerous to our democracy and bad for our well being as a nation. Now they have created doubt in our very banking system just like they destroyed the accounting profession with Enron. Without some trust on a basic level playing field we are totally vulnerable to big money media campaigns that could turn our country into a fascist state very quickly. This is about freedom and a return of some basic foundations for our society to function better.

Jock...sorry but facts are facts. Obama is a druggie---he even admits it in his books. And his mouthy America hating wife is evil. Both are bad for the country, both are crooks

Posted by: annoyingrabbit | Jun 29, 2008 1:24:16 PM

Bush's foreign policy and
do-nothing economic
mismanagement have brought
the country down a few
notches.

McCain will take it much
further down.

jschmidt, good point. I remember that debate exchange well. The topic was foreign policy experience.

Hillary touted her years on the Senate Foreign Armed Services committee as part of her foreign policy experience.

Obama said that he also serves on the SFAS committee. He then went on to talk about how more should be done in Afghanistan rather than Iraq.

Hillary countered that Obama chairs a SUB-committee of the SFAS (not serving directly on the SFAS as she does) and that his committee oversees NATO through which he could have some effect in Afghanistan - but he'd chaired that committee for 18 months and hadn't called a single meeting.

Obama admitted it is a sub-committee and said that he was appointed to that position and then immediately began his presidential campaign so hadn't had time to call a meeting.

This is typical of Obama and his rise to stardom. A padded resume with little experience - and worst of all he not only sees no problem with that but has no problem lying to us about it.

As a staunch fiscal and social conservative Republican, I will vote for Sen. McCain. Was he my first choice? No! In fact he wasn't even in my top 10. However, he is more ideologically aligned to my CORE BELIEFS. One of those core beliefs is the survival of the free market and capitalism. THAT is the true government "of the people, by the people and for the people." THAT is how the American people control our economy.

Sen. Obama and the Democrats want the government, whether it be local, county, state or federal, to be the answer to everything. They want the federal government to regulate Corporate America and small businesses -- and steal their profits to pay for the new, and even larger, Democratic entitlement programs. This interferring with Corporate America and small businesses is designed to decimate the free market and capitalism. And it will open the door for the Liberals to finally accomplish their dream of turning the "Land of the Free" into just another Socialist country.

obama is an Arrogant, Radical FRAUD!!!
and he is NOT qualified to lead our country. He is going overseas - on our taxpayer $$$$ - all to beef up his foreign policy - all for political gain.
Hillary Clinton is the best qualified - and McCain is a good 2nd choice - anybody but obama - this guy is NOT qualified to lead our country - and this is Not On The Job Training!

There is a lot of nasty stuff on this site about Senator Obama and Senator Clinton. I am pretty sure that most of this junk is posted by conservative operatives who are trying to sow seeds of discontent. You know, they say something really nasty or negative, supposedly on behalf of Senator Obama or Senator Clinton in order to upset the other side. However, if you are a Clinton or Obama supporter, please don’t fall for this disinformation campaign and respond negatively.

Let's keep our eye on the ball folks.

John McCain was one of the principal advocates for the war in the first place, even though he has been critical of President Bush’s conduct of the Iraq War in recent years.

As a leading Republican Senator, John McCain could have impeded the Iraq war. Instead, John McCain and George Bush started a war that did not need to be fought – that Iraq war caused the deaths of more than 4,000 American soldiers and wasted more than $1 Trillion that imperils the American economy.

This unnecessary war has strained the military (especially the reserves) way too much. McCain’s crew has spent too much. And too many people have died for McCain’s mistake in Iraq. Now John McCain wants you to hire him to fix the Iraq quagmire that he caused. No…I don’t think so.

Senator McCain is also opposed to a woman’s right to choose, and he would be appointing Supreme Court Justices during the next four years. Vote for John McCain, and say goodbye to Roe v. Wade.

Now, some of you say you will vote for John McCain out of spite. Well, that’s one way to go. Generally, Hillary supports Obama because she believes in the same fundamental causes.

I trust that you will support your candidate based primarily on their respective positions on the issues that are important to you.

Based on the issues, Obama is a much better choice than McCain.

Obama:
Iran is threatening Israel again. Why not stop by, have some tea, a little chit chat and perhaps you can quite Ahmadinejad down? Who knows, Tony may have some contacts there as he did with Iraq and a nice "loan" would go a long ways towards a vacation mansion for you and the misses somewhere.

Mark:

1. The Democrats have held huge majorities on city councils and school boards in most of the large urban cities for over 6 decades. Yet education is still an election issue in these large urban school districts! Sen. Obama was in a position to make changes to the Illinois school system. Yet education is still an election issue in Illinois. The Democrats place their OWN interests and the interests of the unions above the interests of our children. The Democrats prefer to have education as an election issue rather than solving the problems once and for all.

2. The invasion of Iraq was the result of Saddam Hussein's 12 years of refusing to comply with ANY of the conditions of the 1991 cease fire. One of the conditions was if Iraq no longer had WMDs, Saddam Hussein was REQUIRED to prove that he no longer had WMDs. Instead, Saddam Hussein chose to have his neighbors continue to believe that he had WMDs.

Saddam Hussein ALLOWED al Qaeda to set up a training camp in northern Iraq at least 6 months before the invasion. AND he gave over $10 million to the families of the Palestinian suicide bombers (as much as $25,000 per family). So Saddam Hussein both harbored and supported terrorists.

Regardless of why we became involved in the Battle of Iraq, very early on al Qaeda declared Iraq as its primary battlefield in its jihad against Western Civilization. We ARE fighting al Qaeda in Iraq. With the help of the Iraqi military, police and the Iraqi people, al Qaeda in Iraq is on the run. Pulling our troops out prematurely will be seen as an American surrender to al Qaeda. Handing al Qaeda a military victory will only embolden them even more to plan and execute more attacks here at home. We must fight the terrorists wherever they are. And it is certainly better to fight them on foreign soil rather than here on our own streets.
