Obama and Iraqi Foreign Minister Have Different Memories of their Conversation
June 18, 2008 8:09 AM
On Monday, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, talked on the phone with the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari.
At a press availability in Michigan, I asked Obama if Zebari had expressed any concern to him that his plans to withdrawal U.S. troops as president would undo any security advances.
"No, he did not express that," Obama said. "He did emphasize his belief that we've made real progress and I think was eager to see political accommodations between the factions follow up in the wake of this progress.
"I think that he expressed what President Maliki has expressed as well," Obama continued, "which is that the Iraqis are obviously concerned about their sovereignty and are not seeking a long term occupation by the U.S. And so my sense is that we should be able to execute a withdrawal and set a timeframe - a timetable that continues to allow US forces to support Iraqi forces in going after terrorists, that continues to train the Iraqi police and military as long as we're not training militias that are turning on each other. One area that I think is important to emphasize is that as a consequence of a huge spike in oil prices - the Iraqi government's budget is twice as large as it anticipated and so I think its important for the Iraqis to start picking up more of the tab both for reconstruction efforts as well as the need to continue to boost their military capacity."
But today comes this report that Zebari told the Washington Post "that he had some frank talk for the candidate: 'The foreign minister said ‘my message’ to Mr. Obama ‘was very clear...Really, we are making progress. I hope any actions you will take will not endanger this progress.’"

What Obama really meant was.....

My bet is that the Iraqi Foreign Minister is telling the truth and Obama is lying or severely confused (as usual).

This interview didnt go very well for Obama. The Iraqi foreign minister told Obama flat out that he would be sabotoging the effort at this stage by pulling troops out.
Oooops...........
Thats Ok. Hes OBAMA.
He can just change is mind and keep the troops there since its going so well, and have the CORRUPT MEDIA spin it for him so he wont look like the pandering idiot that he actually is.

Obama has to spin to story to support his plan to withdraw for Iraq. The war is winding down - alQaeda, maybe in anticipation of an Obama win, has stated that Israel is a top priority now.
I suggest you read some foreign newspapers to get a better grip on what is going on. US media is in love with Obama- or you would understand where he is coming from...
Obama is so far left - he could fall off the map. With Obama in office there will be good reason to worry - his socialist agenda, his plan to cut the defense budget- yet he funds ethanol in advance of a food shortage and projected sky high food prices over the globe -
Don't worry though- his friends in Chicago have cleaned up on earmarks. As his good friend and political mentor Emil Jones says, "Some call it pork, I call it steak."

C'mon ABC, you can do you better then that. Obama said "He did emphasize his belief that we've made real progress and I think was eager to see political accommodations between the factions follow up in the wake of this progress. "
FM Zaberai "Really, we are making progress. I hope any actions you will take will not endanger this progress."

first off in 2004 iraq was very different then where we are today
we were being told that we needed to stay and that it would all be over...
after 4 years of that, and no progress, iraq not taking over...and us falling for hte lies over and over
yes we need to bring the troops home now
god what a pathetic attempt

Obama: Nancy Pelosi's pimp!

This is a news worthy event...This is garbage! I'm sure what Sen Obama said is accurate. FM Zebari claim of 'frank talk' is laughable. The FM wants the US to stay the course in Iraq and that's just what John McBush will do if elected--a third term for Bush. Jake, next time report on something news worthy or take a job at Fox News because they report crap like this garbage!

"stop whinning you HRC suppoorters and get behind the candidate...Remember this isn't about Obama or Clinton, it is about saving America!" Womenunited, Fighting against bigotry and prejudice is JUST as important! Obama supporters have talked the talk but Obama supporters have not been living this "unity" theme, reflecting this desire for equality for all by speaking up against bigotry, sexism and racism spewed against Clinton supporters. Obama supporters cannot claim the mantle to fight equality for all while remaining silent when bigotry flies from other Obama supporters. We all have to make our stand somewhere to stem this bigotry. And this stand for us is now. We will vote NO to the DNC and Obama supporters.

Obama: Once a liar, always a liar!

The key thing to note is stated right in your question Jake. "expressed any concern to him that HIS PLANS to withdrawal U.S. troops as president would undo any security advances."
Clearly, Maliki had no issue with his plans as stated in the Washington Post. You're trying to find something that isn't there. Obama's plans have always been careful and meticulous withdrawal.
Perhaps, if you asked your question about whether there was concern of the troops leaving period, but as you stated, you didn't phrase the question that way.

"These HRC supporters whoi say they are voting McCain don't realize what his stand his on womens rights." Militarymom, fighting against bigotry and prejudice is JUST as important! Where were you LGBT Danielle when any of the other Obama supporters spewed bigotry and hatred against Clinton and her supporters? Fighting for equality for EVERYONE means not remaining silent when bigotry flies from other Obama supporters in the past 6 months. Fighting for equality for EVERYONE means fighting for everyone, not only when it is convenient for Obama supporters. If we don't speak up and stand up against Obama bullies when they trample on others' rights, then who will be left to defend us when they trample on our rights as well. We will never give up this fight against the unchecked bigotry from the Obama supporters. We all have to make our stand somewhere to stem this bigotry. And this stand for us is now. We will vote NO to the DNC and Obama supporters.

"Remember this isn't about Obama or Clinton, it is about saving America!"
From who? From what? America elected Bush twice. Congress supported the war. The majority of Americans were for it until it became the quagmire the minority said it would become.
Obama made a speech and then voted for the war in the form of continuing appropriations. No this isn't about Clinton. It IS about Obama.
Is Obama going to save us from ourselves? How is that going to work?
Obama supporters have the distinct smell of former cigarette smokers prowling the halls of a company trying to find secret smokers and then hanging around the smoking court to get a whiff to slake their own Jones. They can't shake the addiction so they attack addicts.
Worry about your own souls.

The Iraqi pols are part of the problem there (if not most of the problem). They need a fire lit under them or they'll never get anything done.
Posted by: MIguy | Jun 18, 2008 9:58:15 AM
Jeff...if you fear Obama ,you'd better tie yourself down, because if McCain is elected we are in for a " hell of a ride". Another 4-8 years of Bush policies will kill us. I hope people aren't that stupid...
Posted by: telltruth | Jun 18, 2008 9:56:40 AM
waynes....CHARACTER...OMG...McCain and character are not similar at all...check out this life, he has shown no character at all...( his 1st wife Carol is an example). The only thing he has done is serve in the military...come on...and he did that because his family is military.
