Obama-Clinton Smiley Time Scheduled Even While Tensions Simmer Between Rival Camps
June 20, 2008 2:02 PM
The campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, held a high-level finance meeting in Chi-town yesterday with top fundraisers, and there was nary a mention in the big meeting of any effort to retire Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign debt, which exceeds $22 million, including more than $11 million in personal loans she made to her campaign.
Word of the radio silence on that subject quickly made its way back to Clinton's erstwhile campaign, since a handful of attendees at the meeting were former Clinton fundraisers trying to get on board.
And while the public face of the Obama-Clinton rapprochement is all smiles -- they will campaign together next week and Clinton will attend an Obama fundraiser at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC -- behind the scenes there remains much tension, sources involved from both camps tell ABC News.
It didn’t go unnoticed in Hillaryland, for instance, that the first fundraising solicitation Obama sent out was not for Clinton but instead one to benefit the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
To many Clinton supporters, Obama could easily send an email to his 1.4 million grassroots supporters asking them to help unify the part to retire Clinton's debt. Obama fundraisers could bundle some cash together; former Clinton staffers could be brought on board. Some big Clinton fundraisers are waiting for Obama's team to make a move to help Clinton retire her debt before they write a check for one cent to the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Asked about progress in retiring Clinton's debt, Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs said, "it's been a much talked about issue in the fact that nobody can just write a big check and hand it over."
To Obama supporters, reaching out to Obama's email list would cheapen the brand of his grassroots appeal, and would likely offend some contributors who view Clinton -- and the campaign she waged against Obama -- rather unfavorably. And it's not as if Obama's fundraisers and bundlers necessarily feel any differently.
And while Obama supporters don't think the Clinton team expects them to help her repay the $11.5 million in loans she took out from her personal funds, other issues remain.
For instance, of the approximately $10 million in debt Clinton owes to vendors, Obama supporters are not inclined to have former Clinton senior adviser Mark Penn repaid one dollar on the dollar for his well-compensated efforts.
Many hurt feelings remain on both sides. Clinton supporters feel she was the victim of a biased media and an unfair primary system, that their candidate would be a better president and remains more electable. Obama campaign supporters see Clintonistas as deluded, poor losers, and suffering from a narcissistic myopia that precludes them from seeing that Obama was offended by many of the Clintons' tactics.
And, they ask, why hasn't Clinton done what former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, has done, and called her delegates and asked them to throw their support to Obama?
In short, though you will see smiles for the cameras next week, do not think smiles equal happiness.

Hillary's campaign debts are the least of the problems facing this country and the incoming president. Obama is pretty astute as to the economic and social devastation that is plaguing and stalking our nation, and I'm guessing that he's more focused on the suffering of our fellow Americans than he is about the flow of millions of dollars among the wealthy.
People suffering, starving and dying take a higher priority than wealthy peoples financial "problems".

Amazing how the Obama camp who claims "unity" is quick to disregard a normal procedure in campaigns; the victor helps the defeated pay campaign debts, especially since they are all on the same team. Those "withholding" money in order to not continue party tradition of unity, are the ones being petty and divisive, the apparent force behind Obama that has and continues to drive more Dems away. Seen the polls lately? Not impressive considering the fact that Hillary is out and Obama has bundles of money regardless of the money "holdouts".

On Thursday the 26th I will be making my next check out to McCain!
$50.44........IT is time to put Obama and the DNC on notice. No money to the DNC!

Despite many Clinton's supporter's threats to either vote for McCain or to not vote at all, it would seem logical and fair that if you really love Hillary THAT much, then YOU can pay off her $22M debt. Just like those who feel they owe nothing to Obama, Obama owes nothing to them (Hillary) either! How do you like THAT reality? huh?

Jillian. this has nothing to do with BO being Black, white, red or green. Who is this man, what has he done to better this country, what has he voted on that made a difference? Come on..wake up and smell the lack of experience!!! This man does NOT have what it's takes to be a LEADER. What are his accomplishments? Can you give me any...one...? I'm waiting!!!

First of all, it's not 22 million. At least it better not be. We've been paying her campaign bill ever since she suspended her campaign, and we have been told that it GOES to her debt only!
We don't want HRC indebted to BO for anything, nor do we want her obligated.
And we will not NOT vote for him or give him one penny!

Let's see---all the Hillary supporters are to play nice now? She will, but I don't have to. I didn't vote for the Democratic Party. I voted for Hillary Clinton. Some time between now and November either McCain or Obama will say or do something to convince me that I should vote for them. Unfortunately it looks like it's more likely to be a case of what they DON'T say or do.

As a Canadian, I joined the millions who became grief stricken when Hillary Clinton lost the primaries to Barack Obama. My personal assessment of her candidacy was not only that she would be excellent in office in a way that Obama could never achieve, given his scanty credentials, but also that he has some character flaws which are indicative of a bad case of hubris.Forget what he says he is for. Barack Obama is for Barack Obama. But to give him his due, he is amazingly good at some things -- like stealing elections.
When he ran for the senate in Michigan, he simply knocked three other candidates off the ballot by getting his acolytes to run around questioning signatures until they managed to reduce the more than 1000 signatures they had garnered to less than the 1000 minimum required to run.
The whole story came out on CNN. Even the flagrantly biased CNN couldn't give up a story this good. They even interviewed the disaffected candidates, one of them an excellent incumbent woman.
How did he steal Hillary's election? By taking over her entire platform with minor changes to her her proposed health care program (to its detriment);
by using his oratorical skils like a new kind of rock star to affect the youth of the country; by presenting himself as the messianic prophet who wil singlehandedly save America and of course the world.
I recall reading somewhere that at one of his holy roller sessions he was heard to say as he advanced to the podium "Now watch me wow these white folks."

ANY association Obama has with Hillary will evoke an association of corruption. And, oh yes, I'm yet another who won't offer up another nickel until Obama separates himself completely with Clinton "big money" donors and insincere support. The last thing I want is my money going towards this sort of never-ending political song and dance. Was a good feeling knowing we accomplished this outside the box. Obama, don't blow it.

Well in case you obama supporters he is scewing up on his own and are you going to blame these things on clinton and or her supporters??
So we are to vote for someone who has no experience other than claiming one stance and then doing the opposite? Like public finanacing, nafta,Iraq. UNITY, respect for all people and then michele telling them to put white people infront and then other time telling two muslim women to move!PLAYING the RACE CARD and then blaming the clintons .this could go on forever.oh yeah busing in young college kids to overwelhm the cacauses in Iowa and other venues.NEW kind of politics? more like where he came from ..Another fact he doesn't have the guts to vote when it might hurt him and votes PRESENT.Won't addess the sexist campaign but tells people you better not talk bad about Michele!
WE DON"T KNOW THE MAN exept for words that he changes constantly, maybe this is why we don't want him.

The reason that Obama is not raising more money right now, is that his supporters are misinformed in that they believe that any money that they donate now to Obama could be diverted to pay off Hillary's debt, which largely is money she loaned the campaign and money owed to slimeballs like Mark Penn who grossly over-charged for his weak services. When Hillary's debt is paid off, money will start rolling in from Internet supporters who will feel comfortable that their money will be used by Obama. This is why the money flow has slowed, but it will pick up leading into the August convention.

It is sad but true...In 2008 in this country we are still biased, full of hatred, and always playing into satan's hands by trying to make that which is right be wrong, that which is good be bad. I have read many of the comments and chuckle. If you are a democrat and considering not voting or voting for McCain..you were not a true democrat. What you are really saying is Obama is black and we can't have that. First and far most important God raises up leaders and he brings them down! We as a nation are looking at an intelligent, highly skilled MAN that is offering this country what is has been in need of for a long time... an overhaul. If we were to be honest with ourselves as to this election we would cut the junk and speak the truth. If Barack Obama were white or chose to live his life out as a white man America would not be having this much difficulty. Most say this is not a racial issue but the evidence is so clear a blind man can see what the problem is. Study your history, read your Bible. The bottom line will be who God chooses as leader of this country whether you vote or not.

Yes, I've seen the polls lately- Newsweek, Friday, Obama ahead of McCain by 15 points, without Hillary's help. Can you imagine how far ahead he would if Bill Clinton endorsed him as the nominee, and Hillary actively campaigned for Obama and party unity like she promised- instead of her just crawling under a rock? If I were one of her supporters, I would be disappointed in her behavior thus far after her defeat and concession speech. At a minimum, she needs to a least resume her duties as an active Senator in one of the most important states in the Union.

We already know what Barack is going to do for Hillary, he is going to make joint appearances with Hillary for the democratic party, where they will ask folks to contribute to both Barack's and Hillary's campaign websites. That's all that Barack can do, and that is all that anyone in his shoes before him has been able to do for the nominee loser. What more do you want him to do- kiss her @ss? This is ridiculous. Let's stop blaming Obama for Hillary's woes. He has personally been very respectful to women, unless you want to nitpick about "sweetie" and "you're like-able enough". Give me a break-get real, there is no man in this country, especially in politics, who has been more respectful to women, especially compared to the sexist McCain,

1) Many of you Obama supporters were Dean or Edwards supporters in 04. Remember, they had $ issues too. Dean had to send out an email for extra funds and Edwards was helped by Kerry.
2) Obama isn't doing any "healing" with his cocky winner-take-all attitude.
3) In terms of finances, NO campaign should have a dollar left at the end. That means you did something wrong. That's the number one rule of campaigning - use what you've got. There's always some debt at the end, and that's expected to be picked up after. Granted, Clinton has a lot but she hung in the race - with good reason (look at how close it was for all of you "she had no chance-ers").
4) Obama won't get far with his gimme gimme gimme attitude. He can't have her delegates, her voters, her and Bill campaigning, and her fundraisers without something coming from him.
Give me a break...

Malcolm says not one penny should go to that cheat, Hillary Clinton. Very well said, I am in total agreement and I am withholding any further contributions until this matter is clarified.

What should the winner of DNC primaries do about Hillary Clinton's campaign debt? They should encourage her to honor her obligations and pay her debts. Maybe they can suggest she use some of her Whitewater money, or the money she made from her India Caucus Outsourcing investments, or her pardons for money returns. The money is there, it is just a matter of getting her to pay up.

I wonder if any of hillary clinton debt is some of her Whitewater monies.I hope so,as I am sure many others do.Why did she keep beating a dead horse so long.Did she think that maybe.....

It is the tradition for the primary winner to pay off the loser's debt so, stop forcing about this and work on uniting the party NOW! Everybody os tired and a BIG Completely Change is NEEDED!!!Regardless of race allow YOUNG generation to come in with the SPIRIT of US forefathers.

I personally believe that Mrs. Clinton is a liar,
a cheat, and a thief. All of those allegations
have already been proven. She has no ethics,
and plays to the gullible lowest common
denominator. She is not smart, but rather,
cunning, and there is a big difference. I also
believe that she has some reality issues.
I donated the max to Mr. Obama's primary
campaign, and intend to give more to the
presidential race, but not if one penny goes
to the cheat. She can jolly well rot in hell.
I have nothing against Mr. McCain, but feel
that he's getting a little old for four years of
hell.
