Obama Confronts Lieberman On McCain Advocacy, Tone, on Senate Floor

June 05, 2008 11:27 AM

Sen. Joe Lieberman, the self-described "Independent Democrat" who caucuses with the Democratic party in the Senate even though he has endorsed Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, got some tough talk from Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, yesterday about his advocacy for the presumptive Republican presidential candidate and the general tone of the campaign, Democratic sources tell ABC News.

Returning to the Senate after his securing the Democratic presidential nomination, Obama and Lieberman greeted each on the Senate floor in the Well as they were voting on the budget resolution.

They shook hands. But Obama didn’t let go, leading Lieberman - cordially - by the hand across the room into a corner on the Democratic side, where Democratic sources tell ABC News he delivered some tough words for the junior senator from Connecticut, who had just minutes before hammered Obama's speech before the pro-Israel group AIPAC in a conference call arranged by the McCain campaign.

Watch video of the encounter on the Senate floor HERE.

The two spoke intensely for approximately five minutes, with no one able to hear their conversation. Reporters watched as Obama leaned closely in to Lieberman, whose back was literally up against the wall.

Neither party is officially talking. But while Lieberman spokesman Marshall Whitman says the conversation was "a cordial and friendly discussion" and Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton says it was "private and friendly," Democratic sources tell ABC News that the conversation was a stern rebuke to Lieberman for his criticism of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee as had just happened on the conference call, as well as a discussion about how far Lieberman is willing to go in his advocacy of McCain, and the tone of the campaign.

"It's one thing to support McCain," said one Democratic source, "but many think Uncle Joe has gone too far."

Obama campaigned for Lieberman in 2006 when he was challenged (and ultimately defeated) in his primary race for his Senate seat. When Lieberman opted to run as an independent, Obama wrote a supportive email endorsing Democratic nominee Ned Lamont, but he did not appear in person for him, unlike other Democrats, such as Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn.*

On the McCain conference call yesterday, Lieberman congratulated Obama "in securing the Democratic nomination and to express my own hope as a supporter of John McCain that this will be a civil and constructive campaign debate from here to November."

The only Orthodox Jew in the U.S. Senate then criticized the White House hopeful's speech to the Jewish pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, saying, "I would say respectfully that I thought in this speech that there was a disconnect between things Senator Obama said today in particularly with regards to Iran and things that he has said or done earlier either in the campaign and senate. To be specific, I was troubled earlier in the year during the campaign season when Senator Obama referred to, I guess compared Iran and other rogue and terrorists states to the Soviet Union and minimized the threat represented by Iran. I think that is wrong."

Lieberman also criticized Obama for voting against an amendment he offered with Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., that designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group, and included other language that Obama said linked the war in Iraq to Iran in a way that troubled him. "Senator Obama opposed it saying it was saber rattling and referring to the possible threat of military force," Lieberman said. "But if you look at the Kyl-Liebermann Amendment as it was passed, it has none of that in it, regarding military action. I was hoping and I still hope that he will say that that vote was a mistake, and that he would support that resolution."

"Obama today argued that American foreign policy in recent years has essentially sort of strengthened Iran," Lieberman continued. "At one point, he almost seems to suggest that it helped to elect us Ahmadinejad, and has made Israel safe. I just disagree with that. Iran elected Ahmadinejad for their own reasons. If Israel is in danger today, it’s not because of American foreign policy which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way, it is not because what we have done in Iraq, it is because Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state and has a leader and a leadership that constantly threatens to extinguish the state of Israel."

“Its a difficult situation,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, the Senate Democrats' Assistant Majority Leader and a major Obama backer, told reporters Wednesday, according to Roll Call. “Joe is my friend ... but I hope he doesn’t become the lead attack dog. Of course it’s a concern when someone in your Caucus is supporting the other party’s candidate. Let’s not try and sugarcoat it."

Lieberman agreed to caucus with the Democrats, who need his vote in the narrowly-divided Senate, in order to maintain power. But the Nutmeg stater is testing the patience of Democratic leaders by endorsing McCain and agreeing to speak at the Republican National Convention in September. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told MSNBC they would "watch very closely" how far Lieberman takes his advocacy.

But Obama may feel Lieberman has already taken it too far.

Good on Mr. Obama, soon to be President Obama. Joe needs to be put up against the wall, but he should not have to do the job. Let Joe Biden do it next time. Joe v.Joe; that would be a fun matchup.

Watch and listen to the soft hiss of the snake when Joe Lieberman speaks. The worst of it has not been his trashing of our next President, but his gushing rhetoric about Pathetic Palin. How embarrassing for him and the country, Did he, like McCain, think he would get into her towel, too? That's her grifter MO: flirt with old guys, use them, then bushwhack them. Don't believe me? You don't have to; just do some reading and get the facts fer yerself.

Has anyone else noticed that she has lost a bunch of that Fargo accent?

Seems like several people commenting here do not know about McCain's behavior with his fellow senators, to the point of physical abuse and the f-bomb. Anyone wanting the details, let me know; I can give you the list.

Joe is an Israeli operative. His loyalty is to Israel and big money. This is all discoverable and factual. He makes me think of the soft hiss of the snake that fundie Christians like to be so afraid of. Wish he knew what they pray will happen to Israel and the jews when they rapture.

Harry Reid should have shunned Lieberman the day he said he wasnt sure how he was going to caucus .. Every now and then he threatens to caucus with the Republicans. IfI were a republican I wouldn want nothing to do with that wishy wsshy, smiley face. If I was a democrat , I wouldnt want anything t do with him either. He is a mealy mouth Republican in democrats clothes. He is not a "unifier". He is a traitor. The man repulses me just looking at him. He makes me sick.

I hope obama didnt try to shut liberman up,that is very unamerican to do that, he needs to stay in the party and try to fix it,the democratic party has been hijaked by the far left.and that is very bad for our country, I say liberman stays put and tries to fix the party. good luck joe liberman.

Why do the Democrats continue to placate Sen. Liebermann. Obviously, he is disloyal to the party, so why allow him to caucus with them? Can you imagine what the Republicans would do with one of their caucus members endorsing the Democrat's candidate? His only advocacy seems to be a one-sided view of Israel. He seems to have changed as drastically since he ran with Gore as McCain has when he ran against Bush.

Its about time somebody stepped to Lieberman and let him know what time it is...if he wants to join the GOP, then go do it, don't be scared. If he truly wants to be Independent, then be that...but he is not having it both ways.

Apparently, Senator Obama, who broke little sweat while the DNC arranged the nomination process according to its wishes, realizes that much hostility exists, not just that forthcoming from Joe Lieberman. The elitist left of center controlled DNC, prides itself on promoting the interests of its "own," but loses any sense of direction when confronted by the realities as expressed by Lieberman who, not only speaks for himself, but most likely many voters who wait in the wings to cast the deciding votes in November. The question posed for America is not confined to a single issue regarding Israel or for any other particular issue but whether Senator Obama is the right person to occupy the White House in November. Certainly, the voters in key states as West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, California, New York, Florida, Michigan, etc., etc., and the vast majority of the core base, said no, which is of a greater concern to a Party facing the reality that its only opposition is not directed from the tongue of Senator Lieberman. In effect, the DNC, in forging ahead with its preferred Party nominee, somehow, as often demonstrated in past elections, paid very little attention, let alone respect for the electorate.

So we find out that Obama has a backbone. That would be a change for a Democrat. Lieberman obviously couldn't figure out how to be a Democrat and an attack dog at the same time, so that's why he became and Independent. Now he's crossed that line. Independents don't pledge their support one way or the other. True Independents will say "both sides are effed up," and otherwise wait until election day to make their decision.

Leiberman fancies himself to be a modern day Moses. I for one have more worries than what the U.S. is going to do to protect Israel.

The promise to obliterate Iran and toe the line has not brought peace into the region. The Middle East is unstable, and its obvious that pledging unwavering support to Israel is not going to bring peace to the Middle East. Israel just wants a bodyguard.

As time goes on, it becomes increasingly clear that Obama is not a good candidate for the highest office in the land. His ties with Rezko, Ayers, Dorn and others (I think we all know the current list of shady characters) are enough to keep any clear thinking person with any hint of patriotism away from an Obama vote. Having served in the military (granted, it's been some years now), I cannot fathom this man being Commander in Chief...what a scary proposition. And as an American Jew, I have to say there is absolutely no way I would ever support his candidacy. I do not believe he is a friend to us and his AIPAC speech was total pandering in an attempt to get votes. It was a disgusting display. I am sharing those thoughts with every fellow American Jew I know.

Obama's thuggish behavior toward Senator Lieberman is a further example of why we do not need a product of the Chicago (thug) political machine in the White House. Threatening another Senator has to count as some sort of prosecutable offense to the Senate and the nation and everyone should be outraged at that kind of activity. I applaud Senator Lieberman for standing up to his former party. I am glad to stand next to him as a fellow Independent. It won't be long before he no longer caucuses with the Democrats at the rate things are going. I would see that as a positive move in his favor. Lieberman is not beholden to Obama (and the Democrat party at this point for that matter).

I wonder who does not know that Lieberman defends the state of Israel. He could not care less if young americans should die in Irak and Iran to defend Israel.

As the President of Indonesia said it once, the jews have found someone to fight and die for them

We don't have to imagine a mafia connection..Hello Kennedy , Chicago??? That's what David Axelrod meat when he said Obama is like Kennedy.

Posted by: Joker4usa | Jun 7, 2008 9:28:42 AM

The mainstream media and the democratic leadership is still not getting the point about Obama's Rezko connection.
Can you imagine if a presidential candidate had a longtime friendship with a mafia chief? And not only was friends with him but had him as his chief fundraiser in all his prior campaigns? And this mafia chief was convicted of political corruption during the campaign? And the evidence presented at trial strongly implied that the presidential candidate knew of this corruption that was going on if not directly taking part in it?

Remember the classic mob movies where the gangsters used strong-armed tactics to force people to make decisions in their favor? Such as in the movie The Godfather with the immortal line: "We made them an offer they just couldn't refuse"? The legal terminology for this criminal act is extortion.
Antoin Rezko is well familiar with this tactic:

Rezko Indictment Summary.
Tribune staff report
4:13 PM CDT, June 4, 2008
"Count 1: Mail fraud. Scheme to extort $375,000 from Glencoe Capital of Chicago in exchange for $50 million investment from the state Teachers' Retirement System (TRS). Guilty
Count 2: Mail fraud. Scheme to extort $375,000 from Glencoe Capital. Guilty
Count 3: Wire fraud. Scheme to extort $250,000 from LLR Partners of Pennsylvania in exchange for $25 million TRS investment. Not Guilty
Count 4: Wire fraud. Scheme to extort $850,000 from JER Partners of Virginia in exchange for $85 million TRS investment. Guilty"
...

It looks like Obama learned well from his longtime criminal buddy Antoin "Tony" Rezko.

If put in a position of power, Barack Obama will introduce Chicago-style corruption at a national scale.

Wow there's Obama looking like the jerk he is again. Does he not understand the definition of Independent? Does he not realize we are all smart enough to know how he really feels about Israel. Changing his position later does NOT change his first position. Obama is no friend of Israel period. Guess he didn't like getting called out on that. He can't seem to handle it when people see him for the sham he is.

Anyone who dares to criticize the Almighty One is branded with the evil brush! Good on Lieberman for having the courage to stand up to this narcissist! Obama is as weak as they come and whenever anyone criticizes him, or simply tells the TRUTH about him, he attempts to SILENCE them. Shameful behavior from a "democrat".

If not Hillary, then I am supporting MCCAIN!

Posted by: Muzza | Jun 7, 2008 6:25:30 AM

You think Liberman cares about america. The only thing he cares is Israel. Is loyalty is towards Israel. He takes his direction from Israel. He is critizing Obama, because Obama refuses to toe the Israel/Joe Liberman line to go to war with Iran

People, you can't have it both ways. Is Obama a naive weakling who will be horse whipped by the likes of Ahmadinezhad? Or is he a practioner of a tough brand of "negotiation by intimidation", who will chew Ahmadinezhad up?
Quite frankly, I was heartened to see the way he went after Lieberman yesterday. If Joe wants to support a member of the other party, that's his business. But if Obama wants to give Joe a "friendly reminder" about sticking to the facts, that in turn is his business.
Obama is a lot tougher than he first appears and that's a good thing.

Actually I am glad Joe Lieberman said something because Obama flip flopped on Israel and Jerusalem all in one day. Can't Obama remember what he says from minute to minute or is he pandering to what ever group he is talking to you?
