Obama Eager to Distance Self from Campaign's Former Position on DC Handgun Ban
June 26, 2008 2:25 PM
Craig Layne, a reporter from WJET-TV in Erie, Penn., today asked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, a question on the DC gun ban.
Here's how the exchange went down.
"In November you mentioned that the DC handgun law was constitutional," Layne said. "Now you’re embracing the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision striking down that law—
"That’s not what I said," Obama interrupted, per ABC News' Jennifer Duck.
"Your aide said that," Layne clarified.
"I don’t know what my aide said but I’ve been very consistent, I teach constitutional law," Obama said. "What I said was that I believe 2nd Amendment as being an individual right and have said that consistently. I also think that individual right is constrained by the rights of the community to maintain issues with public safety. I don’t think those two principles are contradictory and in fact what I’ve been saying consistently is what the Supreme Court essentially said today."
Obama continued: "The DC law may have been struck down but they also affirmed the right for local communities to engage in background checks and other common sense laws that most lawful gun owners would agree with. So I think we can move beyond some of the conflicts on this issue, make sure law abiding gun owners have their rights respected and at the same time make sure we don’t see the kinds of murder and devastation we’ve seen on the streets of some of our cities."

Just another flip-flop from this typical politican who says he is different. Hasn't shown us how different yet. I keep waiting....same old-same old stuff.

I bet the Obama supporters on the left wish they had somewhere else to go. FISA, this gun law, and he probably won't keep his word on Iraq either.
He has used them, thrown them under the bus, and moved along to try and win the independents now.
Obama knows the left won't vote for McCain so he's probably not too worried.
What a complete fraud.

Oh I think Obama/Biden is a wonderful and excellent idea. I agree Miguel

Miguel
You're right -- flip-flop has lost it's meaning. In reference to Obama, we should substitute the phrase 'bold face liar'.

I am so glad Obama is running. He is so inspiring. He brought so many people to the political process.
Listen the man is a lawyer. He knows the truth and the loophole like any other lawyer. I would want him or Hillary fighting my case in court anytime. The problem with most of YOU people I beleive is that you are jealous of him.Admit it.
He has flaws, he has made mistakes ,he admitted his mistakes, he is near your age, and he is black. You ask yourself why wasn't I able to steer my life in such a way with all the mistakes I've made in mine to accomplish what he has accomplished. You are jealous.
Barack Obama is a phenominon that has taken America by storm.he has captured the dreams and hopes of so many and you are jealous that you are not him. So you turn on the inside and spew out garbage from your mouth attacking him.Just like Hillary did at one time and a few in the media, you are trying to halt and destroy his monumental, meteoric, transceding rise and send him crashing to the earth and live in misery like you.
I support Barack Obama and he has my vote. He got my vote here in Virgina and he'll get it again. There are millions of americans like me and we like him are going to continue to rise to the top.
Obama 08
Change that I beleive in and change that works for me
Hate all you want
McCain NEVER!

He's just pretty much all over the place.

It just kills Senator Obama's supporters when their candidate cannot be honest. It just eats them up inside that they know he cannot be trusted to give a straight, from-the-heart, honest answer. But they'll keep defending him, because who else have they got?

Flip-flopper is a label which has lost its strength in this election and is because people are trying to use it on Obama when those who have actually paid attention to what Obama has been saying know that he has not flip-flopped. It's simple, those who read the audacity of hope could easily see that Obama has been consistent, those who simply want to damage his candidacy out of prejudice tend to make strong empty statements against Obama before even trying to take an honest look at what he's been saying.

And, the way he looks down his nose at his supporters makes you wonder why they can't realize the disdain he has for them. Obama supporters are being taken advantage of and seem to enjoy every minute of it!

Um, one more time "Jmengate" [but arguing with you is like arguing with a brainwashed wall] - I read the entire article including the "Barack's aide" part. It does not matter if his "aide" said it or not, his "aide" was simply stating and repeating what every major news and political organization already was well aware of. Namely, that Barack supported a DC gun BAN, calling it "Constitutional" - So, in reality, it is even MORE pathetic that Barack lied and denied his own ideologic beliefs and blamed them on an "aide". Further, he acted defensive and elitist yet again when he lamely remarked, "I taught constitutional law!" What a total schmuck this guy is.

The Supreme Court got it right, and it's the same thing that the NRA (of which I'm a Life Member of) has been saying: The "right" of the people to "keep and bear arms". No one is suggesting that thieves and thugs and murderers be allowed to have weapons of any kind but "law abiding citizens" Shall NOt have these rights infringed. PERIOD !!

He SUPPORTED a DC handgun ban, calling it "Constitutional" in November; now that he is running for POTUS, and realizes that he NEEDs more white blue collar votes, he AGREES with the Supreme Court decision calling the proposed ban UNConstitutional! Do you Barack "followers" even bother to read these news articles?.

Yes I read it here it is in Part:
In November you mentioned that the DC handgun law was constitutional," Layne said. "Now you’re embracing the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision striking down that law—
"That’s not what I said," Obama interrupted, per ABC News' Jennifer Duck.
"Your aide said that," Layne clarified.
Do you see that part where he said I didn't say and the reporter back tracked and said Your aide said?
Perhaps you should read.

A campaign spokesperson speaks for the campaign. Duh. If Senator Obama is going to contradict something a spokesperson said, 1.) Should he wait seven months to do it? and, 2.) Should he maybe speak for himself from now on???
Posted by: jjsmith6575 | Jun 26, 2008 5:58:18 PM
A - "It's you that's out of step!!" - And doesn't it just kill you that Senator Obama is winning in the poles right now?
Posted by: jmengate | Jun 26, 2008 5:57:37 PM
I notice there are more attacks on Obama than there are cheers and support for McCain. Most McCain "supporters" are people against Obama and or angry that Hillary didn't receive the needed delegates. Will the real supporters of McCain please stand up and go into detail why he is great for our country?.........Waiting.......

Apparently, Barack supporters need to have everything explained to them. Barack supported a handgun BAN calling it "Constitutional". Now he reverses yet AGAIN on an extremely important issue to America. Regulating handgun ownership with background checks is simply not the same thing as the outright handgun BAN that Barack originally supported only 7 months ago. Apparently, the only "change that we can believe in" to Barack is changing his mind.

BHO is a certifiable idiot and compulsive liar. You can paint him any way you'd like but facts are facts. It's you that's out of step!!

There goes Obama again. Caught in another flip flop on gun ownership; and the only thing he could said is; that is not true. This guy has no firm stand on thing. I can't believe he is the nominee for the Democratic party. All in the name of affirmative action. Our country is doomed if Obama is elected a president. He say one thing today, and when challenged, he denied it and say another.
The same thing when Rev. Wright issue came out; he denied hearing such racist sermons being preached. But during his speech in PA, he admitted hearing such sermons in the church. What again. Are we short of very competent people to lead this country, that we put this naive and phony guy to be a president candidate?
May God save America from Barrack Hussein Obama.

PhillyPaul - "Do you Barack "followers" even bother to read these news articles?" - Funny you should ask...especially since you didn't read the article yourself (either that or you don't have enough capacity to understand it). The article said an aide may have said this. Of course, they didn't take the time to research whether that even happened. So, to answer your question, yes, we take the time to read the articles. I suggest you try the same.
