Obama Launches Anti-Smear Website
June 12, 2008 11:27 AM
The campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois -- still battling rumors about the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee's religion, heritage, wife and even his citizenship -- today launched a Snopes-like myth-busting website in an attempt to correct the record.
The first issue tacked on the website, FighttheSmears.com deals with the rumor that "Michelle Obama Says 'Whitey' On a Tape." The Obama campaign's new website labels as lies: claims by conservative talk radio giant Rush Limbaugh that "a tape exists of Michelle Obama using the word 'whitey' from the pulpit of Trinity United"; blogger Larry Johnson's similar claims; as well as "Proven GOP sleazemeister Roger Stone" saying "he has 'credible that some indelible record exists' of a tape of Michelle Obama using the term 'whitey.'"
"TRUTH," declares the website. "No such tape exists."
Other sections deal with Obama being willing to say the pledge of allegiance, and his being a Christian, not a Muslim. A March poll from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press indicated that one in ten Americans in general, 16% of conservative Republicans, 16% of white evangelical Protestants, 10% of Democrats, 8% of independents and 19% of rural Americans think Obama is Muslim.
Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor says the campaign "isn’t going to let dishonest smears spread across the internet unanswered. Whenever challenged with these lies we will aggressively push back with the truth and help our supporters debunk the false rumors floating around the internet." He calls the website "an action center that allows supporters to upload their address books and send emails to all of their friends. It’s not enough to just know the truth, we have to be proactive and fight back."
Obama and his campaign haven't been consistent as to how to deal with the rumors. In January 2007, after Fox News Channel passed on the false story reported that Obama had been educated in a Muslim madrassa in Indonesia, painting it as an extremist school where hatred of the U.S. was taught, prompting the senator to go on a campaign to correct the record.
"It was an ordinary public school," he told ABC News at the time. "The kids ran around in short pants and learned math and science and participated in the Boy Scouts. It was comparable to any school here in the United States," he explained
Towards the end of 2007, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, was forced to fire Linda Olson, an Iowa County volunteer coordinator, and Judy Rose, Jones County coordinator for circulating emails claiming Obama is a Muslim. During that time, the Obama campaign attempted to correct the record by asking supporters and precinct captains to forward response emails of their own. "But that was nowhere near as centralized and coordinated" as the current plan, Vietor says.
Obama has tried humor. Speaking before the pro-Israel lobby the American Israel Public Affairs Committee the day after the primary season ended, Obama acknowledged to the largely Jewish audience, "I know some provocative e-mails have been circulating throughout Jewish communities across the country. A few of you may have gotten them. They're filled with tall tales and dire warnings about a certain candidate for President. And all I want to say is, Let me know if you see this guy named Barack Obama, because he sounds pretty frightening."
But last week Obama expressed indignation after a reporter asked Obama about the apparently non-existence "Whitey" tape, saying there are "dirt and lies that are circulated in email and they pump them out long enough until finally you, a mainstream reporter, asks me about them. And then that gives legs to the story."
"If somebody has evidence that myself or Michelle or anybody has said something inappropriate, let them do it," Obama said. "This is the same kind of nonsense that we started with the madrassas...and frankly my hope is that people don’t play this game. It is a destructive aspect of our politics right now. And simply because something appears in an email that should lend it no more credence then if you heard it on the corner. And you know presumably the job of the press is to not go around and spread scurrilous rumors like this until there's actually anything, one iota of substance or evidence that would substantiate it."
After that exchange, Obama spoke on a call with senior staffers and decided a more aggressive approach was necessary. He came up with the idea of the website.
He hasn't always had the most help from his opponents in clearing up the rumors. Clinton told 60 Minutes in March that Obama wasn't a Muslim "as far as I know." Last week Obama confronted Sen. Joe Lieberman, Ind-Conn, Add-on., a supporter of the presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for not defending him sufficiently when Lieberman has been asked about the rumor. Lieberman had been asked about the story and later told the New York Observer his response was, "Obviously one’s religion is a matter of choice. Everything I knew said he was Christian."

Can I point out 1 thing? (or maybe 2) This is a free country, we can all vote for who we think is best to run the country. That is a given!!! But, if McCain runs true to form (which is never a sure thing) And he nominates a Supreme Court Justice (which is for Life) then we can all watch as things that women have fought so hard go down the tubes. They will Repeal "Roe v. Wade". I just can not see my Grandaughter growing up with the possiblity that if for some medical reason or due to agression against her that she would be refused an abortion. I believe that life is precious but sometimes things just cannot be. Abortion is not an easy thing to go thru so do not make it that most women would use it instead of prevention. There are alot of families out their that would love to adopt. I was adopted.

Mary - my birth certificate stamp is raised with no color - it it is scanned to post - the stamp does not show up.

Sandy, My birth certificate from Oklahoma, my son's birth certificate from Alaska and my daughter's birth certificate from Hawaii all look very different and all have a black rubber stamp marked giving the date it is listed on public records. So, again, I say the BO's was a computer generated one.

James Danley - thank you for the intelligent reply! We may see the direction this country is going in from different perspectives, but I have been a supporter of Senator Obama's since his 2004 convention speech, and at this point it time, I believe he is the only hope for this coiuntry. He may not be perfect, his plans may not be perfect, but he is a true visionary - vision in a leader has been a rarity in this country for several years. I do not believe McCain can pull anything off but will only be a puppet for the powers around him; it is truly scary that he would even THINK of having Cheney in his cabinet.

it is not that "They Protest to much". That they have to have a web site to set people straight. It is the fact that they have to defend themselves from lies and smear tactics. Of course, the people that say "they protest to much" would never consider defending themselves when people were speading lies about them. They would be protesting to much. Give me a break. We have the right in this country to defend ourselves from people who would try and ruin our reputations with their Lies.

Sandy, I have a different take. I see this election as whether the electorate wants to continue our history of capitalism and the free market or become socialistic; whether the electorate prefers the individual controlling his or her medical decisions with consultations from their own doctors or giving that full responsibility to the federal government; whether the electorate wishes to continue holding onto our unalienable Rights -- Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness or shall we surrender our Rights to the federal government under the guise of preventative health care or in the false attempt to prevent global warming; and finally, whether the electorate will continue our history's reputation as the defender of democracy or walk away and hand a military victory to al Qaeda in Iraq.

The reason the certificte number is blocked out is because it is not YOUR birth certifcate - Hawaii would not release it without the certificate number blocked. GEEZ!

Mary - give it a rest already. Senator Obama's birth certificate looks exactly like mine - even down to the color and I was born in Minnesota.

I just took a look at the so-called birth certificate of Barack Obama and I bet my vote for McCain that this is a fake birth certificate created with the use if a computer. Reason, the document was not stamped as a legal document for the State of Hawaii and the number of the certificate was "blacked out". I would say it is a fake. Also, the typing would not line up so exactly if the document was placed in a typewriter to be compeleted.

And just for the record Snopes.com is not an "Obama-Defender site." It is a site that counters false information on anything one cares to research but you already know that - I think the people who work that site would find your assertion that they are an Obama-defender site very offensive.

This election is about our nation and really, about the future of the world. It is about every person without health insurance and every soldier who may be sent into another illegal war. It is about our economy and our environment. It is not about any of us individually. I don't get this level of narcissism that spouts from the mouths of McCain's supporters. It is self-indulgent and counter-productive.

Senator Obama and his campaign are a savvy team - they do not turn away from any threat - they come right back at McCain and his supporters who spread sleaze and counter with issues - McCain should start a site himself - 'course with all the gawffs he makes, it might be really tough to try and keep up with him.

I have looked at snopes.com as well as all of the additional Obama-Defender sites.
Actually, it is kind of hard to imagine why Obama would need a website to fight the "smear" when he has the media in his back pocket anyway, and is somehow not subjected to the intense scrutiny and criticism other candidates both past and present have been.
It's rather amusing that when most of the "whitey" stories were only circulating in the few and far between media outlets that had the audacity to tell it like it really is and post anything Anti-Obama, he didn't feel the need to worry about it.
It was only when the story finally reached the major news networks, and when one enterprising member of the press entourage that follows him around actually had the nerve to bring the "rumor" to the forefront that he all of a sudden felt the need to launch his "smear" website.
I can only imagine that with such a completely unvetted candidate such as Obama is, that the smears aren't going to be stopping any time soon.
His webmasters are going to be extremely busy between now and the end of August.............

Snopes is not "in the tank" with anyone - what a foolish statement. The more you rant - the more stupid you sound. Time to put you on ignore!
Posted by: sandy | Jun 13, 2008 12:16:10 AM
sandyM - same for you - go to Snopes.com - you will see how unfounded your assertions are.
Posted by: sandy | Jun 13, 2008 12:10:15 AM
Lee - Snopes.com has also posted many rebuttals to slurs and lies about Senator Obama and Michelle. Take a look - might surprise you.

What makes Obama and his crew a great campaign is that when they're attacked, rather than trying to pivot away to something they'd rather talk about, they grab the attack and swing it back at the opponent, hard. It's SO nice to see our candidate's team giving back better than they get... get hit with slime or stupidity, serve back a serious body-blow on issues. I can't believe that someone implicated in a big ass scandal like the Keating Five would even broach the subject of the opposition's integrity. McCain should fasten his seatbelt, cause he's in for one helluva ride.

I want a secular humanist president!

And, then, McCain didn't know the difference between sunni and shia, that he didn't know we were not back to pre-surge troop levels and, most importantly, that he doesn't understand how it does indeed matter when the troops come home - not just for the obvious personal benefit of the servicemen but also in light of the fact that our military is overstretched and the Iraq boondoggle has distracted us from the real "war on terror."
And McCain's quotes regarding Iraq, he was wrong on all counts:
"I believe that the success will be fairly easy." (9/24/02)
"We’re not going to have a bloodletting of trading American bodies for Iraqi bodies." (9/29/02)
"We will win this conflict. We will win it easily." (1/22/03)
"There’s no doubt in my mind, once these people are gone, that we will be welcomed as liberators." (3/24/03)
"It is not important when our troops come home...." (6/11/08)
Great guy some of you people are supporting....

Hmmmmmmm..........an "anti-smear" website..........
I am somehow reminded of the Shakespearean quote about "thou doth protest too loudly."
Must be an awful lot there to smear in the Obama camp if he has to create an entire website to ward it off.
