Obama Responds to Nader's Comment That He's Trying to "Talk White": "It Is What It Is"

June 25, 2008 7:03 PM

"First of all, what’s clear is that Ralph Nader hasn’t been paying attention to my speeches," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said late this afternoon at a press conference in Chicago, responding to criticism from presidential candidate Ralph Nader, "because all the issues that he talked about, whether it’s predatory lending or the housing foreclosure crisis or what have you are issues that the traveling press can tell you I’ve devoted multiple speeches, town hall meetings to throughout this campaign."

Obama continued: "Ralph Nader’s trying to get attention. He’s become a perennial political candidate. I think it’s a shame, because if you look at his legacy in terms of consumer protections, it’s an extraordinary one but at this point he’s somebody who’s trying to get attention and whose campaign hasn’t gotten any traction and so what better way to get some traction than to make an inflammatory statement like the one that he made. It is what it is."

Nader earlier today told the Rocky Mountain News Obama is trying to "talk white" by downplaying poverty issues. He also said Obama wants to show he's not "another politically threatening African-American politician. He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up."

Nader's comments can be watched HERE.

Pot. Kettle. They are both committed socialists and have been for years (Nader much longer of course). Nader is simply more honest and open about his.

Nader's comments are more of the same old double-standard trash that we've been suffering with for years.

Anytime an African-American person in the public eye in this country manages to string together more than three well-constructed sentences, there seems to always be someone out there ready to say that individual is "talking white". Obviously, it's not simply "talking white" -- just look at W. Bush. It's actually "talking like an educated, intelligent person".

It is a shame to see someone who is supposed to be an advocate for the disadvantaged like Ralph Nader, acting instead like just another ignorant ......

There is nothing false about hope.

I think it's really sad that some of us, who actually have pretty decent incomes are having to choose between gas and other necessities. We have REAL issues in this country. If we pay attention most of the rest of the world view us negatively and we are considered as arrogant and close-minded to other's cultures. It's a shame that race issues are so prevalent in this campaign. What is happening here is sad, because all of those countries that hate us are probably cheering this behavior on. Have we not learned our lessons of divide and conquer. If we can't even come together to resolve the economy, international policies and promoting unity IN THIS COUNTRY, then we will fall just as Russia, Rome and other elitist nations have. We need to stop the bickering and realize that we have some very real problems. I don't know about the rest of you, but what does "talking white" have to do with the price of milk!!

Ralph Nader has been a watchdog for the public, fine! gas is over $4, housing problems everywhere, where has he been when all this was going on? it's easy to point fingers, he needs to worry about his own problems. saying that someone is "talking white" is racist.
I think Barack went to school, so if he speaks english well, it's not just white, it makes him educated....

So, what credibility does Ralph Nader have anyway? He talks down on John McCain too, its just he gets more publicity bashing Obama.

Amazingly, Ralph Nader is stealing votes from John McCain, according to the polls. It would be better for all of us if Nader would keep his comments to himself.

Ralph Nader is still looking for another Corvair to beat up on! Give it up, Ralph; your day is past. Retire in peace!

CNN reported a poll today that Ralph Nader would take 4% of Obama's vote and Bob Barr (the Libertarian) would take 3% of McCain's vote.

So, if both of these potential spoilers run, the net effect should be near zero.

nader says obama is trying to talk white----wouldnt that be normal ------since he is half white---what is genius nader doing on tv not worth the attention.

While in the Illinois Senate, Obama was instrumental in passing payday loan and predatory lending practice reform. Obama talks about continuing such reform all the time on the campaign trail. Either Nader isn't paying attention, or he's been smoking too much grass, or both. As far as the "talking white" comments ... they're disgusting and degrading. What, would he like it better if Obama talked like a thug from south central LA? It's like he thinks that Obama's command of the English language and ability to talk to, relate to, and advocate for people from all walks of life is a bad thing. As President, Obama will represent all people, not just blacks. If Obama acted like Nader seems to want him to, he'd have no business being in office. Nader is nothing more than an attention whore.

why in the world should or would anyone give any attention to a nothing like nader----he just wants some attention like every other nut that comes along.a moment of no one knows what.--absolute 0

Nadar's views are idiotic. I am black, and I understand Obama more clearly than all of the stereotyped personalities he refers to. Nadar can't accept that some of us do actually graduate University, and shape our lives and thinking through the personal disciplines, training and hard work that we have had to embed into our characters to succeed. Nadar's views are bigoted.

what racist crap

Posted by: rodney | Jun 25, 2008 9:21:43 PM

nader stopped making any sense years ago----think he is senile like mcbush

"At least know what you are talking about and don't "cry wolf" when you hear LIBERALS that are also disgusted with Obama's problems."

Don't know about "philosophous" but frankly I believe that are VERY few of them. he simple fact is if you'll vote Republic you ARE Republican. Just look in the mirror and admit it to yourself.

The strongest arguments some are making for voting for McCain is that he'll be an impotent Republican and won't be able to do what they do so well. That is nonsense.

Ralph Nader's NUMBER ONE funding source, according to Funding Watch, IS A GROUP OF REPUBLICAN 527's. Several investigative reports - most quashed by the right wing - have revealed that IN EVERY YEAR THAT HE HAS RUN he has been FUNDED BY NEOCONS. HENCE, PLEASE SEND THIS WARNING TO EVERYONE THAT YOU KNOW AND DISCOUNT ANYTHING THAT NADER SAYS, AS HE IS BEING ENTIRELY FUNDED BY FAR RIGHT WING 527 GROUPS!!!

"fool me once" No, it's because Republican leaders are beyond hope.

Posted by: Max Fisher | Jun 25, 2008 9:11:47 PM

I haven't heard anyone mention that McLame isn't speaking out against payday loans, predatory lending etc, is this because only black politicians should be judged on these issues.
