Obama to Shake Tinseltown Tree

June 24, 2008 7:08 AM

This afternoon at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Los Angeles Music Center, the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, will hold a $2,300-per-person reception that looks to attract many fancy celebrities.

Before the event the campaign will hold a VIP dinner for donors giving $28,500 per couple to the DNC Victory fund.

Seal is scheduled to perform. And why not? Many in Hollywood compare Obama to a kiss from a rose on a grave. (He remains their power, their pleasure, their pain.)

Some of the stars anticipated: Samuel L. Jackson, Seal and Heidi Klum, Sidney Poitier, Will.i.am, Cedric the Entertainer, Dennis Quaid, Kal "Kumar" Penn, Sugar Ray Leonard and Jennifer Beals.

Other industry folks such as Ari Emanuel and Ron Meyer are supposed to be there as well.

But as always in Hollywood there is intrigue afoot as well.

As Variety puts it: "The big question is just how many of Hillary Clinton's high-profile fund-raisers will show up at the event, as the sting of her loss is still hardfelt in some quarters. Obama is expected to reach out to others, like media mogul Haim Saban, who raised more than $1 million for Clinton's campaign. Asked by the Los Angeles Times whether he planned to attend a meeting that Obama and Clinton are hosting on Thursday with her top money men, he sent back a terse reply: 'No.''

And Variety points out that Clinton fundraiser Sim Farar plans to meet with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., during his visit to Santa Barbara on Tuesday.

Another Obamaland concern, per Variety: "the flurry of e-mails and misinformation about the candidate's positions on Israel and the Middle East. Last week, former Rep. Mel Levine and Rep. Howard Berman held the first organizing meeting of Obama's Los Angeles Jewish Community Leadership Committee in Beverly Hills, before a group that included such supporters as Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Lynton. 'There has been a persistent effort to undermine and distort [Obama's] record early on,' Levine said. 'Our goal is to get the facts out, and as they get out, his support in the community will grow.'"

Oy!

It's sad but I thought Jennifer Beals was a flake since the time she said 'I never thought about Gay/Lesbian/T issues until I played in the L Word'...Duh!!! are there no gays/lesbians/trannies in Hollywood? or has Beals been living in a hetero bubble?

And now she's gonna pay money to support Obama??? more duh!!!!

The man is nothing but an opportunist and those who support him will get what they deserve.

I am more disappointed in Beals than I am in Obama.

There is a REAL world outside Hollywood and there are people in it who wish America harm just like they did on 9/11.

Capitulating to them is not going to stop further terrorism or fix America's financial woes nor help Americans in distress whether they live in Iowa or on the streets.

Grow up Obama supporters. America is not the enemy.

Maybe Tinseltown can color this election in technicolor.

Obama should not be running around with that joke Hillary. She is so yesterday. Also her big money buddies are corrupt. He doesn't need them to win. He is selling out.

While I understand the Hillary supporters not wanting to vote for Obama, It would seem their numbers are not what they would like everyone to believe, they want us all to think they are 18,000,000 strong when in all honesty they only have about 100,000. If they honestly believe McCain is the choice they have to make, then so be it, I just hope they remember that a vast majority of republicans wont vote for McCain, so their votes wont be enough to put McCain in the WH.

"e-mails and misinformation about the candidate's positions on Israel and the Middle East"?

The Obama camp has been generating mixed and ever-changing messages ... it has nothing to do with any kind of Evil Outside Forces...

When Hillary threw in the towel and Obama became the presumptive nominee, I decided I wasn't going to vote in November. However, I've changed my mind and decided I'm going to (write-in) vote "present" -- I mean, if Obama can do it 130 times, I can do it just this once, right?

Justin-- Please inform me how much Obama has contribute to the people of Iowa. He is a senator from the south side of corrupt Chicago. The only known person receiving XXX cash/value was Obama with his mansion deal with criminal Rezko.
Besides I do feel for the people who have lost everything due to floods, tornadoes, fires, etc.

From the reports that I have read, it seems only about 30/35% of his campaign funds have come from small donations $200 or less. The remainder are from the usual corportations, lobbyists, deep pocket individuals, etc. It is true he has a million and half of very small individual contributors.
I have not donated or voted for the socialist. I do not trust him.

So he's going after the bigger donors. I was wondering how many of his million plus small donors are actually paying those credit card charges on time. After all times are hard and it's just a faceless bank who will eat the contributions. Isn't that a novel way to get back at big business ... except that you and I who pay our debts will be the ones who pay.

It's amazing!!!!! Obama fans and Mc Cain fans are competing "my crook is better than your crook".

Our country is filled with hateful and uninformed people. It's no wonder we're in this fix. Tax cuts for the fortunate, healtch care not provided for our citizens, children left behind, high gas prices, mortgage foreclosures, the dollar way down, a war that was started because???? Where is Bin Laden?
Why did 4000 lose their life when the Iraqis won't fight for themselves. Where is the oil? Why can't they build their own country? Why do we continue to spend billions we just don't have? You can't do this in your household, so why is it we fighting our way back to the biggest debt in the history of our country. What happened to the surplus?Fighting in Afganistan. John McBush will have us fighting in Iran. I can only assume he will have a draft to fight yet another war. Who will fight this next war, our teenagers? How could anyone vote for another extension on Bush? It blows me away. Obama is intelligent and can be the commander in chief. If George Bush can do it anyone can. I could do the job with the right people giving me information and engage and ask questions to form your opinion and then discuss and make a decision. I never heard anyone say Bush was engaged. His attention span is too short. You don't have to be a POW to make war decisions. McBush is forgetting a lot of things, conufsing the enemy, nd losing focus on conversations and press conferences. He's a war hero that has lost his way. Fighting in Viet Nam does not provide experience to face terrorist. No one has that type of experience. They've all learned as they went on. Obama is smart and will keep us safe and bring our friends in other countries and continents back to the table to discuss our future. Bush has not shown any interest in anything except war, and he's been pretty bad at that.

Judy.....good post. DNC has lost us for sure.

Posted by: Barb | Jun 24, 2008 4:07:49 PM

I just said the other day to my mother, you don't see many stars out and about with Obama.

Posted by: tww | Jun 24, 2008 2:05:33 PM

Yeah, those d*** people in Iowa, so irresponsible. I bet they think our government should have spent some money on the levees! How dare they?! And don't get me started on those irresponsible kids, expecting some sort of education.

Good point Mary. Irresponsible people should just be sent to Iraq, right?

Posted by: Justin | Jun 24, 2008 1:21:00 PM

If I had a hundred millin dollars in the bank, I would not contribute one nickel to the campaign of a socialist/communist. He has ruined the Democrat Party. He is a modern day Robin Hood. Always wanting to give more to irresponsible people.

Anybody else hear that McCain lied about being tortured in Vietnam?

Posted by: Justin | Jun 24, 2008 12:32:56 PM

Hey neo-cons, instead of complaining about Obama's campaign finances why not try to explain McSame's connections to all the lobbyist?

A $2,300-per-person reception seems inconsistent with Obama’s rationale earlier this year for intimating that he would abandon his written campaign pledge to “aggressively” encourage the Republican nominee enter a pact with Obama to only accept public campaign finance money—that he really has a “parallel public” finance system of his own because his contributions are all from small donors. (Source, Erbe, “Obama's Public Finance Flip-flop”, US News, April 11, 2008.)

And, as this post alludes to, Obama has finally come out and expressly opted out of the public financing system.

I really do not understand why the media is not taking Obama to task for breaking this written pledge, a pledge that McCain accepted as soon as Obama made it, and which leaves no wiggle room:

In response to a questionnaire from the Midwest Democracy Network, Obama stated in November, 2007:

“If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”
(Source, Smith, “Obama out of system, but not out of character”, Politico, June 19, 2008.)

Obama repeated that phrase in an op-ed in USA Today the following February. Ibid.)

This is a pretty major promise, it was in writing and unambiguous, and how can you trust a word Obama says if he is breaking his first campaign promise before he even takes office?

Moreover, even before this planed Los Angeles fundraiser, there were many Obama $2,300 per person (the maximum contribution the law allows) fundraisers in San Francisco (and elsewhere).

In addition, Obama leads all candidates in donations from the pharmaceutical industry and commercial banks, among other industries, and to cite another example, Obama accepted a quarter-million dollars from Exelon's top executives. (Exelon is in the nuclear power industry.)

The point is not that taking the maximum size contributions from donors that the law allows is wrong—far from it. The point is that Obama’s excuse for breaking his pledge does not hold water.

So, over the last months of the campaign, Obama has come up with additional excuses (such as he cannot except public money without some controls on spending by the Republican 527’s and PAC’s)—but each of these excuses are equally burdensome for John McCain—who is sticking with his acceptance of the Obama pledge.

"when you get going with the Obama thing it's very inspiring."

Why?

Because the guy can read a script well?

He can't put two sentences together without blurting "uh" a hundred times without a script.

If you were hiring someone for a job, would you do anything more than have that person read aloud to you? Or would you be interested in what they have done?

If Bill Clinton plays the
saxophone he can raise a
lot of money for the
Democratic Party.
