Rendell Explains Why Clinton Needs Obama to Help Her With Campaign Debt
June 25, 2008 7:21 PM
Why is it important for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to have Sen. Barack Obama's help in retiring her sizable campaign debt?
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell explained it to me today.
Recalling two elections he lost in his career, Rendell recalls, "Gosh, when people saw me coming they crossed over to the other side of the street. It isn't so easy to raise the money when you've lost."
But, Rendell said, "if you're the winner, if you're the nominee, people are very much inclined to help Hillary Clinton, or whoever your opponent was, because you're asking, because the winner has a tremendous amount of leverage."
Late this afternoon Obama acknowledged what ABC News was first to report last night, that yesterday on a conference call "what I said was to my large donors, who are in a position to write large checks, to help Senator Clinton retire her debt, or at least a portion of it. And I think there are going to be those who are willing to do so."
But the Clinton team is looking at more than $10 million in debt -- not to mention her personal $11.5 million loan to her campaign. So the following remarks were assuredly irksome to many former Clinton officials.
"We don’t have some ten-point strategy to do this," Obama said. "Small donors who are writing $5 or $10 or $15, $25 checks – first of all, their budgets are tighter. And, they know that I am going to be working with Senator Clinton. If they want to make contributions than I think there’s nothing wrong with them doing so. And I want to encourage that. But ...I’m not going to be individually contacting $15 donors, because frankly it probably wouldn’t be that effective in terms of making a big dent in Senator Clinton’s debt."
So he won't send out an email to his grassroots network of 1.5 million supporters, who have so far enabled him to raise upwards of $260 million.
No doubt they ain't happy about that in Hillaryland.

You don't know why Obama feels the need to help Hillary retire her debt???
Because he needs her supporters.
He doesn't help her out, he doesn't get her full out approval. If he sells her out this one last time, she is done with him.
Obama knows he was anointed and appointed by the DNC and that it will not make a difference once it comes to the real election. He NEEDS every Hillary supporter he can get. He is not a shoe in by any stretch of the imagination.
Obama may twist and turn it anyway he wants but bottom line, he needs Hillary and her supporters to have a chance in November.
I was sorry to see Hillary's latest email to her financial supporters.
Sorry Hillary but I could never vote for Obama or send you more money if there is any chance that it will help Obama.
If you still need help after the election, when Obama is out of the picture, then I will help retire your debt. Until then, it was nice but this is one place I cannot follow you.
I've never seen a worse candidate for President than Obama. Why he is choosing to be vetted in a campaign for the highest position in the nation is unclear to me, but it just makes him more suspect.
Obama wants to be president so we should just give it to him? How about earning it first. Put in a few years that really show what you believe in and what you can do, then ask the voters to vote for you. Otherwise you are just a Trojan Horse with tickets inside to anyone with the money and power to get you what you want, then wait for you to pay them back.
I'm not risking my family's future on Obama's hope, dreams and changes.

Hillary Clinton can do whatever she feels she must do with respect to Obama. But her supporters are not hers to redistribute. Nothing will induce many of us to vote for Obama -- we are not in play as bargaining chips. Speaking for myself, rather than vote for the unqualified and hypocritical Obama, my vote will go to McCain in November.

In addition, rather than send the "debt relief" (RELIEF as if "It" is its own natural disaster area), donors would be well-advised to bypass "It" and send the money straight to the vendors who got stiffed by "It." Otherwise, they might get stiffed the second time around in lieu of the Clinton 2012 campaign.

Senator Obama, you would be well advised to cut all three Clintons - Bill, Hill, and Chelsea (yes, I mean Hillary Jr too) - completely loose and do not allow them to have any sort of representation in your campaign. Please tell me the primary season has been instructive in that you know a snake will always behave as a snake NO MATTER HOW WELL YOU TREAT IT!!! "It" should pay its own debt from it's $109 million 2007 income. "It" talked about hard-working Americans getting screwed by The Man over and over and over, never mentioning that those words were its own confession. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty concerned that most of the news lately has been about "It" and not Kathleen Sebelius, Janet Napolitano, Caroline Kennedy, or Michelle Obama who are all capable of reaching out to women (the sane ones, at least) as well.

This man has a general election to raise funds for. Hillary's debt really can wait or she can come forward with her and her husband's multimillion dollars. You know, pay her own debt.

It's very simple. She worked her way into this debt. She can work her way out. I'd make any form of payment conditional. He should offer to help retire her debt after he's in office. If he doesn't win then she doesn't get paid. That way it's an insurance policy that she'll have SOME kind of motivation.

She was $5 Million in dept, then $10 Mil, then Then $20 Mul and she kept spending.
Reminds me of people who go to Best Buy and run up credit cards for big screen TV's just before they go bankrupt.
People forget how much Obama had to spend to keep fighting even after there was no way to win.
I bet she cost Democratic Donars an EXTRA $100 million with here failed campaign.

Clintons back to panhandling for coins...just like back in the 60's hippy days....hahahah
Aren't these the same Clintons that stiff waitresess?? (BTW Bill and Hillary have different methods of doing this).

Charlie35,
How about getting together with your neighborhood friends and having a huge garage sale to help Hill get the creditors off her back?
That can help put your anger to a good cause for Hillary's sake.

Those of you who continue to say if not Hillary then I'm voting for McCain need to take a step back and think hard if you want 4 more years of "Bush" running this country........ If you are a true democrat then you'll support the candidate of the democratic party. Case closed. Otherwise you are telling us that you are a republican.......
No, I'm not a Republican. Nor am I any longer a "true Democrat." Actually, I don't think I ever was. What I was, and what I still am, is a true American! And as such I will vote for the candidate that I feel will be better for America. Without Hillary, that candidate is now John McCain.

Sour Hillary Supporters, especially those who will vote for McCain!
"Quit your snibbling", as my Army Commanding officer use to say.
Staying on this site all day and night whining and complaining is not helping Hillary retire her debt.
It just make you look stupid and weak.
Why don't you all get together and encourage the rest of the 18 million supporters to stand by her with your money, not just your mouth.
Expecting Obama's small donors, who are barely making it, struggling with high jacked oil prices due in part to that EnronLoophole, to take what is meant to get them through these hard times, and give it to Hillary is unconscionable. These people gave to Obama because they believe in him, believe in him enough to make sacrifices.
If you still sour, fake "I'm voting for McCain" Hillary supporters really BELIEVED in Hillary, her campaign debt would be retired by now.
Pay up or Shut Up!

Tell Harriet Christian, the famous Hillary Clinton diehard who threw a fit at the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee over its perceived bias towards the Democrats’ “inadequate black male” of a nominee, to gather all her family, friends, and friends' friends, and her family's friends, and all the ones that think like her, to help Hillary pay this debt.
Where is she and all the rest that were showing their undying love to Hillary. Instead of complaining, tell them all to put their money where their mouth is so Hillary can pay the people she owe when she was badmouthing Obama.

Can't figure this one OUT,
When you can loan yourself 11 million dollars, why do you need someone to bail you out.
Anyone got 11 million to give me, to bail me out of debt.
or maybe 11 thousand,
or maybe 11 hundred,
Hell 110 dollars would even help.
I will setup a website for all donors..
Please respond...
YES WE CAN

This is the problem with people we elect. The thought pattern is a bit different than John Q. Public. We were always taught to pay off out own debts. Hillary, what did your folks teach you? You incurred the bill, now pay the tab yourself.
Or better yet, I'll send you what I can to help, then you pay off my mortgage!

Shame on Sen. Clinton's supporters, who get emotional kicks by making a show of support to her, probably shedding a tear or two, for the media or trying to cut an impression in the blogs. Why the so-called 18 million supporters of her, or even a significant percentage of them, contribute a few dollars to her campaign to help her retire her campaign debt? If they are so much driven by the causes, that Sen. Clinton fights for everyday, and is passionate about, and that is why she took so many hits and insults from the Obama campaign and members of the DNC, her supporters should now help save her from this ignominy. Why does Sen. Clinton need Obama to help her with her debt? Shame on the so-called supporters of Sen. Clinton!

Pumas,
I know you just vote for Maccain so that Hillary will get a chance in 2012. What a wild dream you have!
If Obama lose this time thanks to you, we-the other 18 million people will not vote for her in any future... fair is fair, period.
Just be smart like your Hillary.
Blind love is same as poison... that will kill your beloved.

Hillary needs Obama's donors and Obama needs hers for the simple reason that they have "maxed out"(given the maximum contributions allowed by law) to their own candidate but can now do the same for the other ($2,300 for primary season and $2,300 for the general). According to May fund-raising numbers, Obama is flush for the primary season, which is still going on, but only had $10 million on hand for the general. He needs Hillary's big givers and bundlers (especially since he's foregoing public campaign financing)-- and his big givers and bundlers can help retire her debt. No great mystery. And Obama's probably right: His small givers probably can't help much.

Ed Rendell that fat loser. He and people like Evan Bayh knew the campaign was over and insisted on tearing the party apart. Maybe Ed and Evan can go to West Virginia and raise the money. They got those people to waste their vote. Might have the same luck with West Virgina money.
I used to like those guys.

Hillary Clinton did this to herself. She was power hungry and was financially irresponsible as a result. Let her retire her own debt. It's not Bill and Hill are living in the poor house.
Posted by: JustMe | Jun 26, 2008 12:41:12 AM
I justa donated more money to Hillary, I'm more than happy to help her retire her debt, she stood up for me and will continue to do so. I expect that I'll have the opportunity to contribute even more for 2012 campaign. I cannot in good conscience vote for Obama as he clearly lacks the integrity needed for the Office of the President of the United State of America.
