Rove: Obama's the Guy at the Country Club Holding a Martini Making Snide Comments About Everyone Else
June 23, 2008 1:36 PM
ABC News' Christianne Klein reports that at a breakfast with Republican insiders at the Capitol Hill Club this morning, former White House senior aide Karl Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as "coolly arrogant."
"Even if you never met him, you know this guy," Rove said, per Christianne Klein. "He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by."
Rove said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "needs to come right at him." He referred to the latest Newsweek poll showing Obama with a 15-point lead over McCain as nonsense, though he used a more scatological synonym. Rove said he was heading over to the White House for lunch and a chat with the President, Klein reports.
**
Interesting that Mr. Rove would use a country club metaphor to describe the first major party African-American presidential candidate, whom I'm sure wouldn't be admitted into many country clubs that members of the Capitol Hill Club frequent.
But the picture Rove paints is interesting. Who, pray tell, is Rove at this country club?
The guy telling funny stories near the band?
The charming president of the club's philanthropic arm?
The brainy guy with all the sports scores?
Or the guy who vandalizes your car and blames it on the kitchen staff?

Carl, I'm a 20yr Naval retiree, also I'm 100% disabled by the Veterns Administration. Social Security turned me down for benifits, I havent worked in 11 months due to my health. Is there any where I can go for help. Without getting a expensive lawyer?
If I receive a check from the U.S. government for my disabilities and the USA goes bankrupt. Would we loose our benifits? I bet there are a lot of Vets thinking about this possible problem.

I just can't figure out the so-called republicans that are being swept up in all this Obamaism. He's becoming a modern day false prophet. When are "we the people" going to start to retake America back from the biggest enemy this great nation has ever met. The government it self.
Majority of "we the people" are being brain washed by a smooth talking President, abusing my grand children's future to bury our strong religious values, Bill of Rights, and our fore Fathers dreams of America.
President Obama will be the DOWN FALL of our way of government and the "Father of the new United Socialist States of America".

It's interesting how the dems continually slam Carl Rove, until his statements reinforce their vitriol for the republicans. I don't care what the media says, if you connect the dots, it's obvious that Obama's lipstick/pig comment, which came just days after Palin scored points with her pitbulll/lipstick statement, was an ugly sexist response from Obama. Now, Obama is crying that he was misinterpreted, while the media, once again assists him in playing the victim. The deck has been so stacked in favor of Obama, whether it's the media's refusal to vet Obama in the first place, to giving Obama free rides with Wright, Farrakhan, Rezko, Ayers, etc.. The media, as well as shows like The View, are continuing to show extreme bias against Senator John McCain, while kissing Obama's ###.

Carl Rove is the height of arrogance. I can not wait to see him squirm if anyone ever has the ----- to bring him down.

Rove think he is above the law, above the constitution, above the institutions. He is so powerfull that he beleived he can rule out the legislative corps on their duty. this is a dictatorship mentality. Now with all this he thought Obama is arrogant. What a contrast!
Is he arrogant because he is from the midle class? Is he arrogant because he fought to earn everything he gets. Is he arrogant because he was Raisen in by a single mom, lived the simple life with his grand parent in a single room apt... ? Is he arrogant because he looks like regular american fighting to achieve the american dream? Is he arrogant because he comes from too far? Rove needs to look up the meaning of the word "Arrogant" and compare his own behaviour.

Rove is trying to call Obama an elitist, and the only comparison he can make is some guy he doesn't like at his country club? Country club snickerers?
It's like trying to pin an elitist title on someone by comparing him to the guy who always complains about the selection at your wine-tasting parties.

Are some of you people kidding me?? OBAMA is a liar? Are you seriously putting Obama up for comparison next to people like Karl Rove and George Bush? AND OBAMA is the liar? The Bush administration has done nothing but lie since that conniving dunce was elected. Bush endorses McCain. And you would give Bush the equivalent of a third term? Uh huh. Pull the level for McCain, who is also a liar? (And an arrogant, self-importantly, wildly uncontrollable one at that) I say pull the lever ON McCain...drop him to the pit of despair for all I care.

I've read message after message about the war and 4000+ deaths. Does anyone not remember 911 and all the gungho for the President to go and blast them off the face of the earth. Everyone was for it now everyone acts like they didn't approve at the time. We don't have a draft now so everyone must be a volunteer. I think they realized there would be a chance of not coming back since they were trained to fight. Just please back off this crap and support our boys that are there and that might have to go over there or even worse places. Both of my brothers and one sister served in VietNam. All made it back (thank God) with everything in tac except for agent orange. I still remember the President addressing the people of the plans and everyone excited about it now he's a #######. We elect these people to make decisions we don't want to make so give some slack.

Re: Rove calling Obama Coolly arrogant??-this from a man who routinely thumbs his nose at congress by ignoring subpoenas multiple times? Give me a break, who can take Rove seriously---his "war is peace" 1984esk doublespeak is appalling. This man should not be quoted by reputable news sources. Let Fox do that.

Day One w/ObamasSpeech----I'm for this
Day Two w/Obama's Speech---I'm against what I was for yesterday
Day Three w/Obama's Speech--I apoligize, my words were taken in the wrong context the last two days.
Come on, what are you for and what are you against? This man switches his position according to the group people that he's speaking to.

obama is a puppet for the radical leftest socialist party. you people better wake up. your rights and freedoms are at stake. dig deep to find out who these men are and what they really stand for in this race. america will never get its respect back and its economy back on track with obama. do your home work!

The abundance of country-club metaphors only shows how deeply the institution is ingrained in American life? Maybe we are all a little more elitist than we think?

All politician's will tell a lie every now and then but come on fellow Voters. Just listen to two speeches that Obama makes and concentrate on the lies he tells. He'll tell one group that he's for it and the next day if that doesn't work out with them he's against it. Never have I listened to a Presidential Candidate that lied each time he makes a speech as this year with Mr Obama. No one knows exactly where he stands with the issues because he will not let the voting public know. Ask him a question and like all Democrats he blames the Republican Party for all our woes. A vote for Obama is truly a vote for change and just remember, thats a big change for the next four years. A change that it may take years to correct once he's out. THINK people. I'll pull the lever for John McCain and hope the majority of Americans will also.

What's most disturbing is how Obama is above reproach. It's become almost blasphemy to criticize him in anyway. Kudos to John Stewart for pointing this out in his comedy routine, but he'll probably catch flack for that, just like the rest of us. It's as if Obama has been packaged and sold to us as some kind of diety, when he's nothing more than a junior senator, with a thin resume, who voted present a hundred times at his job.

"I know that Rove is the one who gives generously to the club's philanthropic arm. I have seen the income taxes of both subjects of this discussion in the press and Rove is the one who donates in the 7 figures, more than $1 million for the math challenged, to charities every year."
And Obama is the one that just finished paying off his student loans a year or two ago. Which one is elitist in that picture? hmmm?

I like how Karl Rove never mentioned John McCain's elitism. There is a famous incident the White House machine hid a few years back in which John McCain screamed at a kitchen employee at a posh country club in Phoenix, Arizona. This incident was followed by another in which McCain threw a dinner dish on the floor. The same man that Rove accused of having a bad temper is now being protected he his now a Bush toady.

Karl Rove says Obama is "arrogant." That's the pot calling the kettle black, I think.

To Red Sleeves:
Yes, Lincoln and Obama have similar resumes. They both served 8 years in the Illinois legislature. And yes, Lincoln was in the militia, but fighting civil rights cases in Chicago is great experience also.
And my bigger point was that they both had/have limited "Washington" experience so experience is not a predictor of success. Wasn't that the Reagan, Bush, Clinton message? That you don't want someone who has lived their whole life in Washington, like McCain has.
Besides, Obama respects his wife, whereas it is pretty clear that McCain has issues there. Do you know what perjorative he called his wife in public in the early 90's? Let's just say it is about the most cruel thing you can say to a woman. Two journalists just published a book describing the scene in detail.
Nice guy, that McCain...

It is a paradox.
The Rove at the country club is clearly the charter member -- the gatekeeper without peer whose bylaws keep out blacks, women, Jews.
There is some symmetry here: Obama, surely in the eyes of the right, is crashing their party.
