Rove: Obama's the Guy at the Country Club Holding a Martini Making Snide Comments About Everyone Else

June 23, 2008 1:36 PM

ABC News' Christianne Klein reports that at a breakfast with Republican insiders at the Capitol Hill Club this morning,  former White House senior aide Karl Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as "coolly arrogant."

"Even if you never met him, you know this guy," Rove said, per Christianne Klein. "He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by."

Rove said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "needs to come right at him." He referred to the latest Newsweek poll showing Obama with a 15-point lead over McCain as nonsense, though he used a more scatological synonym. Rove said he was heading over to the White House for lunch and a chat with the President, Klein reports.

**

Interesting that Mr. Rove would use a country club metaphor to describe the first major party African-American presidential candidate, whom I'm sure wouldn't be admitted into many country clubs that members of the Capitol Hill Club frequent.

But the picture Rove paints is interesting. Who, pray tell, is Rove at this country club?

The guy telling funny stories near the band?

The charming president of the club's philanthropic arm?

The brainy guy with all the sports scores?

Or the guy who vandalizes your car and blames it on the kitchen staff?

I know that Rove is the one who gives generously to the club's philanthropic arm. I have seen the income taxes of both subjects of this discussion in the press and Rove is the one who donates in the 7 figures, more than $1 million for the math challenged, to charities every year.

I'll tell you who rove is: he's the piggish fool in the corner handing out dirty fliers with lies about people.

Obama is a very decent, respectful man who grew up with family values and respect because he grew up poor and worked for what he has, unlike mcsame/mclame/mcbush

My friend that's a secret service agent told me the one time he encountered Obama, he asked him to empty his pockets and put his hands up for a metal detector, for a routine security measure. Obama said quote "do you know who I am? If this happens again you will never work here." That sounds much like Rove's example. Sounds ignorant to me, which folds into his anti-American ties.

Having never been in a Country Club, except to Caddy in my youth, I have no idea what Karl Rove is talking about. I don't know the guy who he says Obama is. I see Obama as the affirmative action hire who didn't need affirmative action to get the job.

I really wish Americans would stop looking at the Republicans vs. the Democrats like a football team unless they understand that we are the football getting kicked around. WE are supposed to be in charge according to our constitution and all we do is whine about which "side" of the aisle has more right answers or power. When are we going to tell Obama and McCain what WE WANT THEM TO DO instead of asking them to take care of us? Why do we NEVER flex our own powerful muscles. They are supposed to be our servants, remember?

Nope:

You totally misread my comments. The examples of "cool arrogance" are the words and tone of what I hear from the Obama campaign. Please reread again and realize I'm against these positions and perspectives and the overarching arrogance I perceive from the Obama campaign and left in general.

vote_for_country,

Really? Obama has a resume comparable to that of President Lincoln?

Lincoln served as an officer in the Illinois militia, served four successive terms in the Illinois House of Representatives and appeared before the Illinois State Supreme Court more than 400 times.

After he won the Presidency. he actually did suspend habeas corpus in the United States, imprisoned 18,000 suspected Confederate sympathizers (without trial), and spent money without congressional authorization.

If you're black at the country club, Rove's definitely the racist club member who vandalizes your car and blames it on the kitchen staff. After he's done tearing the heads off criters. Absolutely.

You should read up more on Michelle's Princeton experience and you would learn any griping she did had to do with the racism that existed there. I believe when she went to Princeton in the early 1980's, she was one of 10-15 African Americans attending. That number is stunning!!! The parents of her roommate at Princeton tried to get their daughter moved to another room away from Michelle.

So why don't you start dealing in facts yourself.

It is interesting how you mock Obama for his 143 days of Senate service and later call up the name of Abraham Lincoln as one of our great leaders.

Too bad you don't know history or of what you speak. Yes, Lincoln is considered as one of the great presidents, but you obviously don't know that his political experience is not that much different from Obama's. In fact, their backgrounds (Illinois, lawyers, limited political experience) are striking. Lincoln is actually one of the prime examples that shows that lack of political experience is not a liability.

And McCain's years and years of experience, living in Washington, having no connection with real people is really a liability. Those people who live in Wash so many years have no concept of what the real world is like. Besides, I seem to recall Nixon has a great deal of experience...oh, and what about George Bush...he was the executive of Texas all those years. Wow, I am impressed.

Bob Ross says he “loves Republican logic,” but then goes on a rant about privilege, which he then calls “elitism.”

Bob Ross does not know the meaning of "logic" because he is using the word in a very sloppy (and very incorrect) popular manner that is nonsensical.

Bob Ross does not know how to use a dictionary, which is one of the first classes taught in college English 101.

Bob Ross does not know how to construct an argument (generally around English 102).

Bob Ross does not know how to compare and contrast.

Daisy:

Why do Leftists ALWAYS judge based on looks? Is it that important to you? Does character count for so little that you base everything on looks? (Oh, that’s right, Nancy Pelosi has had so many facelifts she can’t even close her eyes; ditto Hillary.)

Did you see Jerry Nadler a few years ago? If you like Porky Pig, how about Henry Waxman’s upturned snout? Democrats in general are HUGE; ever notice Harvey Weinstein? Have you seen Michael Moore? The female delegates at the DNC convention look like the BEEF TRUST!!!

Do you ACTUALLY believe that Democrats are better looking than Republicans? Have you NO idea of the weight differences between the two parties? Just get a scale and weigh the delegates. Then, find out which side has the most face-lifts.

What about Bill Clinton’s big red nose?

WHY are Leftists so hung up on looks?????????

Sylvia Johnsen: It is stunning that YOU are attempting to change the meaning of words.

If you want to talk about “privilege” then you should talk about privilege, not elitism. They are two different things.

Cindy McCain was born into a wealthy family. But, that did not stop her from becoming a special education teacher. That is NOT elitism.

Michelle Obama went to Princeton, but griped about how she was treated there. That IS elitism.

Given the mess the country is in, I find it distressing that so much thought is given to Roves spin. Please refer to the Obama Oct 2, 2002 speech, before the Iraq war started.

To quote- "I don’t oppose all wars. And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.

What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income – to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression."

Iam4thisCountry,
You have been misinformed. Michele gave the same basic speech three times. She did say "really" in one of those but in others she left it off.
Obama is right about one thing. People are bitter. I am bitter I am sick of these empty promises given by politicians and Obama is no different. My bitterness does not drive me to my "religion, guns or antipathy of those who are not like me." By the way I do not have antipathy towards those who are not like me, except for maybe politicians taking my money and destroying this great country. I don't like Mccain either but I do see him as the lesser of two evils. Obama is just another whining liberal that will screw this country up. This country has turned on the current President because he has had such success at protecting this nation. What the advisor was saying was true but shouldn't have been said. Mccain is the onl candidate that can protect this country. Obama is naive and is viewed as weak by many here and abroad. He needs Mccain to protect Michele from republican attacks. Mccain has absolutely no power over what the right wing talk hosts and bloggers do just the same as Obama doesn't control the liberal media even though they all but bow down to him.
Bitter

Rove is a mixer. Trys to stir up things and then stands back to watch what happens. I do not think the Obama is an "Elites" Again and again statements are taken and twisted to get reactions. Lots of people are Bitter about the economy and loosing jobs. People do take comfort in their religion to help them get thru and some people cling to what is farmilar; like guns, in tough times. This was not meant to be critical but a fact of human nature. Michelle Obama said that "For the First time in her Live she was REALY PROUD" We are still hearing about that one. But most of the time it is quoted with out the "REALLY" part. This Black guy (yes a republican) was quoted in "Fortune" magazine as a terros attack would help McCain. I am sure he wasn't suggesting that we would get attacked or he was hoping we would get attacked. He was just responding to a question.

Bob Ross says, "People are bitter about what's happening in this country how their jobs are being shipped overseas. How gas keeps rising and they have to choose between food, gas for their car, or medicine." And Obama's policies of taxing businesses to the point that they move overseas will help this situation how? And taxing the "windfall profits" of the oil companies will work real well to help the price of gasoline. I'm sure they will just eat that loss of profit without passing along the cost to the consumer. He's pandering to people that don't understand economics and that want to get back at the "rich" people. Won't work. We're slowly becoming socialist.

Obama will be fully revealed as soon as he gets his hands on the power he lusts after so mightily .... until then we will not see who he truly is, as he will be whomever he has to be to get there.

Posted by: Combs | Jun 24, 2008 4:31:28 PM

I'm sorry Karl but your definition of elitism doesn't fit with your example. If that's your definition would president Bush also be an elitist as he won't meet with people who disagree with him, he controls who are allowed into his events and people have to sign loyalty oaths just to get in. i think the McCain example I gave earlier was the definition of an elitist when he wanted to go fishing so he built his own lake on his own piece of land just so he could fish.

Posted by: Bob Ross | Jun 24, 2008 4:07:55 PM

Ed Obama's bitter comments weren't arrogant. They were true. People are bitter about what's happening in this country how their jobs are being shipped overseas. How gas keeps rising and they have to choose between food, gas for their car, or medicine. People in this country have every right to be bitter. They work hard and they end up getting screwed while the rich people, most of whom come from old money, get tax breaks and don't have to worry about the same problems the little guys have to. Obama didn't break his promise on public financing he said he'd do it if both candidates agreed to do full public financing. McCain has shown he can't even keep his part of the deal as he already broke his own law during the primary when he used the public financing system as collateral for loans and got free ballot access.
