If you need God to explain the universe, then who or what is responsible for the existence of God. We are tiny ants confronted by the fact of existence. An Obama-Clinton ticket might unite the Democratic Party. But I can already see the Republican ads using Sen. Clinton's video clips blasting Sen. Obama on his lack of experience and not being ready on day one. Sen. Obama has defeated Sen. Clinton, does he really want to place her -- and Bill -- right back into the limelight? That is going to be a really tough decision!

AP is reporting that Sen. Clinton is making it known that she is open to being Sen. Obama's running mate. My previous estimate of a 25% chance of an Obama-Clinton ticket may well have just gone up to at least 50%.

Unless Sen. Obama and/or Sen. McCain break from tradition and announce their selections early, we will have to wait until the conclusion of their conventions to learn who they want as their running mates. So if they hold to the tradition, we are going to have three months of "24/7" speculation on the cable news networks. Normally VP selections don't really make that much of a difference in a general election. But this general election could be a very interesting exception to the rule!

SEN. OBAMA -- It all depends on whether Sen. Obama wants to pick someone who is more middle of the road to attract Independents or go slightly further right and try to attract liberal Republicans -- i.e. Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) or even Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) or Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME). But I just don't see Sen. Obama selecting a Republican as that or going too far from the center within his own Party might alienate his liberal base. He might make the attempt for Party unity by selecting Sen. Clinton, but I would give that about a 25% chance. With the emotions still very high regarding how the sexism charge, whether perceived or actual, played out in the primary, my guess is that Sen. Obama will likely select a woman. While most politicos have California as a lock for the Democrats in November, he could seal the deal for the state with Sen. Feinstein (D-CA). Or he might try to pick away at the Republican hold on the South by selecting Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA). But selecting another senator might be a liability. He probably needs to select a governor. Someone like Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-MI) would fit that bill -- and help with the Michigan vote as well. While I personally believe that Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) is his strongest running mate, Gov. Granholm would make an interesting choice.

SEN. McCAIN -- Will Sen. McCain alienate the conservative Republicans by attempting to attract moderate Democrats and Independents by selecting someone like Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT)? Will Sen. McCain distance himself even further from the Bush Administration, by not selecting anyone connected with the Administration? OR since he is already running as a strong supporter of the War in Iraq, will he make the bold move and select someone like Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice? Sen. McCain could attempt to attract disenchanted Democratic women by selecting a moderate woman like Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) or Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME)? Selecting another white male -- i.e. Mitt Romney -- will certainly make race an issue in the general election. So Sen. McCain could select an Hispanic or an African-American in an attempt to lessen the race card during the general election. I personally believe Dr. Condoleezza Rice would be Sen. McCain's strongest running mate. But she has already stated that she does not want to run for public office. Unfortunately that is likely the case for Colin Powell, who would also make a very strong running mate.

But mostly it comes down to this: do you want every voter to be counted?

If you do, then Clinton loses the popular vote - you have to count those who expressed their preference through caucuses too if you really want to count everybody. You also have to find some way not disenfranchising those who voted 'uncommited' in Michigan. You also should consider (as much as you can) those who didn't turn out because they were told, repeatedly, including by Sen. Clinton, that their votes 'weren't going to count for anything'. Anything else boils down to "I want every voter to be counted, except those ones."

Do you want the rules to be followed?

If you do, the Clinton has lost, fair and square. Obama has more pledged delegates and more declared superdelegates. By the rules, neither Florida nor Michigan should count, but, again by the rules, they can be counted up to half-a-vote (there has to be some penalty for those states breaking party rules, otherwise imagine the chaos next time round...). But either way, Obama wins.

The only way you can argue that Clinton has lost unfairly is by some fairly tortured logic and an unhealthy dose of hypocrisy.

FACT: Superdelegates don’t have votes until the convention. Until then, they have preferences.

FACT: The Clinton campaign reserved its right to appeal the RBC’s Michigan decision to the Credentials Committee. A favorable outcome of that appeal will change the number of delegates needed for the nomination. Until that appeal is heard, no one should be declaring victory based on 2118.

FACT: Barack Obama stole (and I mean that literally) 59 delegates in Michigan: 4 from Hillary Clinton and 55 from Uncommitted, a legally recognized presidential status. In a tactical error, Obama took his name off the ballot, and now a handful of political hacks at the DNC have set aside fundamental principles of election and constitutional law to effectively reverse his voluntary action.

FACT: These same RBC hacks lecture us disenfranchised Democrats about playing by the rules, but only when the rules favor His Highness Barack. (Case in point: the rules give my candidate Hillary Clinton the absolute right and authority to stay in the race and to take her case to the convention floor no matter how many superdelegates are bought “declare.”)

FACT: Caucuses are unfair. If Michigan delegates can be re-allocated using hokey-pokey methods, certainly it would be reasonable to use the results of actual primary elections in states which had caucuses to “correct” the delegate tallies so that they are a fairer reflection of the peoples’ will.

FACT: Hillary Clinton has won more popular votes than Barack Obama. And, yes, that includes Michigan. You can’t have it both ways — if Obama wants delegates from Michigan, then the popular vote counts.

FACT: Hillary Clinton is the stronger candidate — by miles — against John McCain. She has assembled a demographic coalition that has a 100% chance of winning the Presidency for the Democratic Party. She can win crucial states in the general election like Florida and West Virginia that Obama doesn’t have a prayer of winning.

FACT: Hillary Clinton still out-polls both Barack Obama and John McCain in Electoral Vote surveys even in a climate of overt misogyny and sexism, even though the media has stopped treating her like a contender, and even in the face of criticism by officials in her own party for continuing to participate in the election.

FACT: Barack Obama’s momentum has been sliding downhill since February, even though he has enjoyed the most lopsided media coverage of any presidential candidate in history, and even though he has spent more money, up to 4 times the amount, on advertising than Hillary Clinton. There is no indication that Obama’s trajectory will recover anytime soon, especially not given the treasure chest of ammunition he and his wife have produced for the GOP and 527’s.

FACT: Barack Obama — the candidate who promised to transcend race — threw the race card around in this campaign without shame and with no apparent regard for the long-term consequences to the reputations of two loyal public servants, the Clintons, or the long-term impact on society.

FACT: Barack Obama, if not directly, suggested that white voters who chose Hillary Clinton over him by 30 and 40-point margins in some states did so because of racism, when HE is the one hanging out with, praying, and doing god-only-knows-what-else with his band of racist friends and preachers.

FACT: A huge portion (some polls say up to 50%) of Hillary Clinton supporters would not vote for Barack Obama in the general election, regardless of whether Clinton endorses him or campaigns for him.

FACT: Hillary Clinton will not only be a superior general-election candidate for the Democrats, she will be the best President our country could elect during these perilous and serious times.
