VP Cheney Apologizes for West Virginia Incest Joke
June 03, 2008 10:27 AM
"The Vice President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone," Lee Anne McBride, the spokeswoman for Vice President Dick Cheney, told the Washington Post. "On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."
McBride was referring to a joke the Vice President made yesterday at a public forum, when he mentioned how he and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, were distant cousins. The Second Lady, Lynne Cheney, found the connection through Cheney's maternal grandmother who also had a Cheney in her ancestry.
“So we had Cheneys on both sides of the family — and we don’t even live in West Virginia,” the vice president said to laughter. “You can say these things when you’re not running for re-election.”
The fall out:
Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-WV: "This is exactly the type of stereotyping that we don't need from our elected officials. It's disrespectful, and it's certainly not funny. The Vice President should know better than to make a remark like this one. We all work hard to further West Virginia's good name, only to have comments like this tarnish it. As a proud state, I can say we are disappointed."
Gov. Joe Manchin, D-WV: "I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter. West Virginia is home to some of the most patriotic people in the nation and our sons and daughters have answered the call to duty every time a president has needed their service. They deserve better from the vice president, and so I would simply ask for his apology."
Sen. Robert Byrd, D-WV: "That a man who has ascended to the seat of vice president of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans. Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia."
Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV: "West Virginians are the hardest working, most decent people I know. Anyone who spends time with them gets it. The Vice President should be more careful about cheap shots aimed at the very people who elected him."

Nobody could take a man seriously who doesn't know an animal from a human before he shoots at it. He was wrong and he should have apologized personally because it did come out of his mouth and not his aide's, but that's just the way this administration is. They make a mistake, they send somebody else to clean up the mess. I was offended as a West Virginian by his comment, as I am not inbred nor is any of my family or my frineds. It was wrong to say it, but honestly, nobody in Washington takes this idiot or the other one seriously!! It's not true and we all know it's not....incest happens everywhere in the US and all over the world actually.
Good luck to the new candidates.....they have a lot of crap to clean up!

This comment and others like it suggesting that WV is isolated, different or anyway inferior to the rest of the country is outdated, obsolete, tired and just plain stupid. Elected officals should be better informed. This type of thing matters because people buy into stereotypes so easily in order to feel superior. It damages our economy, dignity and tourism here in WV. If it was printed on paper I'd use it in my outhouse. (That's a joke in case you believed it)

What's the big deal? The VP made a joke, if its not true, then we have no reason to be offended. If anything he should be making jokes about how he and the president mismanaged this country for the last 8 years.

As a citizen of the GREAT state of West Virginia, I am ashamed to call myself an American if a vice president can get away with making comments like this. I can say one thing for West Virginians, we may "cling to our guns and religion" but we don't make the mistake of shooting a person in the FACE while aiming at a duck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stupid!

In fairness to Cheney, I don't think it is accurate to refer to his comment as an "incest joke". It appears to have been a joke about inbreeding in an isolated population.

This is as crass and insensative as his "So???" reply to Martha Ravitz's question....he truly is a insensative a++. If anyone watches "Lil' Bush" they Lil' Cheney character is DEAD ON! Looking for the prince of darkness?? Look for him in his new "undisclosed" location in Wyoming...hopefully some fishing guide will have the sense to toss him in the g-dam river! Don't try humor Mr. Cheney...it goes against your grain!

West Virginia is the nation's "Best Kept Secret." The remarks from Vice President Chaney and Mr. "Jake" who shared his opinions on this site are based on ignorance. Have they ever visited the state? If they have, they would realize that West Virginia is "Almost Heaven" and would have refrained from making a spectacle of themselves.

I do like how posts get removed here!! Censorship!!
You libs are something else, learn to take a joke!!
There was no need to apologize, if anyone should apologize it is the KKK Senator Byrd (D) from W Virginia for using the 'n' word on the senate floor!!
Debbie, the troop level is at pre-surge numbers at this time, they are at the 2003 level.
David - I like that one!! Another relative of Obama :)
You know why libs cant take jokes it is because they can tell if it is true about them!!
The Lib party is full of Ambulance Chasing lawyers, and in one case there was a guy waiting in line to enter a court house for jury duty and he told a lawyer joke, you know a lawyer in front of him had him arrested!!

Regardless of any asinine comment made regarding the people of West Virgina, just because someone says it does not make it true. Frankly, I have nothing but respect and love for the people there. As citizens, regardless of political affiliation, we are all in this together. I think it is great that people took umbrage to the "joke" and am glad that the vice president issued an apology. We have had too much nastiness this political season; it's time to show each other some respect.

He didn't mean to hurt anybody-he didn't say it to anybody's face-but it reflects on what he basically thinks about West Virginians.

Even if he considers it a joke it shows the insensitivy of this man and the Bush administration. It insults a group hard working citizens that support scum like him. Cheyney grew up in Casper Wyoming in a community much like West Virginia towns. How quickly one forgets when Halliburton comes along. I would initially say to him to get on his horse and ride back home, but I do not want to insult the fine people of Wyoming .

Cheney is the biggest freaking joke in the world along with being the worst VP in the world.
I hear his ticker is low just like him!

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, the following states allow first cousins to marry: AL, AK, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, MD, MA, NJ, NM, NY, NC* RI, SC, TN, VT, VA (and Washington DC). (NOTE: The NCSL actually includes TX in this list, but TX banned first cousins from marrying back in 2005.) *NC does not allow double first cousins to marrying.
Six other states allow first cousins to marry under certain conditions*: AZ, IL, IN, ME, UT, WI. *Only if they are over a certain age or cannot bear children.
Ironically, WV does not allow first cousins to marry!
ALL states allow second cousins to marry.

Those are the people who helped keep Pinky and the Brain in office for the last eight years. But Bush and Cheney are well know for stabbing there supports in the back.

I am from rural East Texas and the ongoing joke there - by the people that live there - is that the family tree never forks in East Texas. I don't believe the West Virginians really care either. But politicians and their supporters will try to make an issue out of anything. Lighten up people. If you don't like the policies of the current administration, then criticize those - and live this issue hunting that is let by the media and the politicians to them.

But - its just fine and dandy that a vicious attack from A CHRISTIAN CHURCH PULPIT can, but two supposed "christian" preachers can use profanity, can use their bodies in an obscene manner when speaking of the Clintons, can tape vicious hate sermons and sell them from the church for profit - LISTEN - A CHURCH SELLING HATE AND RACISM - A CHURCH.
Well I guess we've come a long way down now. The USA is beginning to look as bad as what the rest of the world is saying we are.
So if obama gets into the White House and starts having his famous criminal and Anti-American associates visit and hold meetings - what are you going to do?
Will you continue to drink the spew he pours out? Will you continue to accept and be proud of this Anti-America stance and his white hating wife along with his Anti-American preachers?
How much money have you obama cult followers poured into the Reverend Wright fund? Yes, we all know many, many millions.

It's really sad when people can't take a joke, especially when it is so blatantly obvious. GET OVER YOURSELVES, PEOPLE! It was a freaking joke for crying out loud! And the people in the audience laughed! If you can't take the joke, maybe you need to take a look at yourself and realize that you are taking life to seriously.

Hmmmm.....TEXAS???

Not a surprising remark from Cheney. Afterall, he can't even refrain from shooting buckshot in the face of a friend ( reference to a controlled game hunting incident in TX).

What is sad is that so many uneducated citizens vote Republican. The GOP doesn't give a damn about this segment of society. This is exactly what Obama was referring to when he said these people cling to guns and religion. His statement was absolutely true. The GOP manipulates the less educated with fear and then scornfully laughs at them after the election.
