Welcome Back, Carter
June 10, 2008 8:20 AM
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and his allies have come across a meme they dig -- Barack Obama = Jimmy Carter!
Last night, almost a month after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, started saying that McCain is running for President George W. Bush's third term, McCain came up with a snappy comeback.
"Senator Obama says that I’m running for Bush's third term," McCain told NBC News's Brian Williams last night. "It seems like Barack Obama is running for Jimmy Carter’s second."
Asked what he meant by that, McCain said, "spend, spend. Tax, spend."
ABC News' Bret Hovell noticed that earlier Monday at a McCain fundraiser in Richmond, Va., former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger said, "I do have a suggestion. It occurs to me that the Democratic candidate does remind me a great deal of Jimmy Carter. And perhaps we should make that identification stick."
Politico's Jonathan Martin writes that the comparison makes sense since Carter's term "is recalled by conservatives (and others) as one marked by high gas prices, weak national security and a perception of favoring Arabs over Israelis. Not a bad combination given McCain's message against Obama….That said, there are millions of voters who either weren't born or who are too young to remember a thing about the Carter presidency besides something about a killer rabbit and Billy beer."
McCain blogger Michael Goldfarb insists it will work. "Jimmy Carter's done a nice job of keeping himself in the spotlight, writing the instant classic Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, meeting with the leadership of Hamas, certifying the election of Hugo Chavez despite allegations of fraud by the opposition, etc. etc. etc. Plus we're going to get a speech at the Democratic convention to jar everyone's memory."
But Carter hasn't been president for almost 30 years. I wonder if the comparison will mainly highlight McCain's age. It's not quite as if McCain had started chanting "Ma, ma, where's my pa? Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!" to invoke Grover Cleveland, but it's not the timeliest of references.
Though it does in a way in the larger historical context draw a comparison between President Bush and Richard Nixon…which in terms of disapproval ratings and GOP demoralization may be apt.

Hoosiersue,
Um, no that was before Carter's term. He started his term in 77. Just look to one historical icon - the Ford Pinto. Why on earth would that lemon have been produced if gas was not scarce? The Pinto was released in 1971. In fact, articles state that it was rushed into production. That urgency underscores the gas situation of that time.

Mccain is a fractious man on the wrong side of history and human events. He and his party will be relegated to oblivion in November. It is presumptuous to elevate Mccain as the competitor to Obama and dangle the losing proposition as an alternative for America. In the coming election majority of Americans are going to vote based on their deteriorating economic and political conditions, the sinister legacy of the Republicans to America.

Irma, that was on Carter's watch; I remember it well. And by the way.... Ford was the president before Carter. Guess you're too young to remember that and slept through American History class.

Before Carter, the good, Christian summaritan who does good work for the most vulnerable in society, I remember hideous lines at gas stations. I remember the situation being so dire that people were getting into arguments, fist fights and murder for gas. Richard M. Nixon was the President during that time.

Obama hasn't been in the Senate that long and he earmarked over $91 millions (can be confirmed on his website); for example, his wife's hospital where she got a huge payraise; over $225,000 to Pflger's church....
Of all his years in the Senate, McCain earmarked ZERO, NOTHIGN, NADA!!! There have been so much pork barrel projects and MCcain has always proved that he's fighting against these corrupt policitian (for example: 1Tanker). It's a joke to say that McCain is surrounded by lobbyists. Well, if he does, then he must be really good because he didn't give them a dime on earmark.

a perfect comparison! with obama, America will definitely going back 30 years from now. Carter was a nice guy with a very weak mind. I've always want to meet him and ask "why did you give up Panama Canal?". Remember what an embarrassment it was during the Iran hostage situation?? It took Reagan to show them the "Real" America that they cannot mess with. Obama will be no different than Carter.

Obama compared himself to Reagon.
How come he becomes Carter now?
Anyway who is Carter?
Another Emperor wearing New Clothes?
Why DNC does not even bother to mention him as America president?

I'm sure people as old as McCain would remember Carter quite well. The similarities are interesting though. Carter inherited an economic downturn from a lame duck Republican presidency, he actually tried to use diplomacy to solve problems and he warned of the pending energy crisis but nobody listened. The president, no matter who it is, can't solve problems himself. He can only lead and hope that the masses will follow.

The policies that Obama is advocating aren't new or fresh, they are the same re-hashed garbage that didn't work in the 70's and won't work now. I guess you need to look no further than his biggest cheerleaders: Kennedy, Kerry, Carter, etc.. He needs to get his head out of the clouds and get real. The country can't run on hope and change.

It has been said here that Obama is smart because he is a Harvard graduate. Has anyone considered that perhaps he got through Harvard the same way Teddy Kennedy did - HE CHEATED. Teddy paid other people to take his tests. because he is a Kennedy he got away with it. Same as with Mary Jo.

Vanessa
Those are not traditional "Blue" states. So the issue is which name will stick?
Actually they are both appropriate. Obviously this will not be won on the issues since Obama voters often don't care what they are.
As a Hillary supporter who is now leaning McCain I hope that those who are not trolls here take a look at history...
I think Obama promises the world and can't deliver much....where was the Democratic congress when we needed it?...that's right they were voting pork barrel politics.
Obama's pork barrel awards were to....the hospital where Michelle works which netted her a more than double pay increase....to the anti White priest Pfleger which allowed him to spread the ministry of hate....to Jones in the IL Senate which was quid pro quo for handing him legislation that Obama passed off as his own.
In 2005 Obama was in bed with the slumlord Rezko....
Tell the story!

For the historian: Germany declared on the U.S. first. For the hypocrite about the 4000 plus heroes. Where were you when harry truman sent troops into Korea - 50,000 died in that war. Where were you when Lyndon Johnson started his war - 57,000 dead. One death is too much. I'll wager that you were one of those Obama draft dodgers. By the way - did anyone see the latest news --It seems that Obama just has this need to be associated with crooks and con men. First it was Rezko and now it is Jim Johnson. Obama got him to find him a suitable V.P. While Johnson got million of dollars $7 in fact from Countrywide. He also took millions from other sources while heading Fanny Mae. You should know about the subprime mortgage mess. Obama is sure running a clean campaign. Sure!!! Look for more on this from the Republicans

Rgreen:
The 91st Congress (1969-1971) -- the Democrats were in the majority (House 245-189; Senate 57-43);
The 92nd Congress (1971-1973) -- the Democrats were in the majority (House 254-180; Senate 54-44-2);
The 93rd Congress (1973-1975) -- the Democrats were in the majority (House 239-191-1; Senate 56-42-2);
The 94th Congress (1975-1977) -- the Democrats were in the majority (House
291-144; Senate 60-37-3);
The 95th Congress (1977-1979) -- the Democrats were in the majority (House 292-143; Senate 61-38-1);
The 96th Congress (1979-1981) -- the Democrats were in the majority (House 276-157; Senate 58-41-1)
President Nixon was in the White House during the 91st, 92nd and 93rd Congress. President Ford was in the White House during the 94th Congress. President Carter was in the White House during the 95th and 96th Congress.
With the huge majorities that the Democrats held during the years of the Carter Administration, why weren't ALL of the energy problems solved for all eternity? Come to think of it, why weren't all of the education problems solved for all eternity?

well as my daughter (age 24) said to me "why would this be a bad thing?" She has only seen Jimmy Carter on Larry King and finds him to be a pretty amazing man.
and oh yes - the other thing she learned about him from her history book is that he advocated alternative energy and told us we had a crisis ahead and that everyone laughed at him and his sweaters. Lets not remind us of that...

Some facts that need to be considered:
Carter inherited 15% interest rates and a failing economy. His Draconian measures probably saved the country from a serious depression.
Obama isn't Carter and the world is a lot different today. The Republicans were looking for a tag to place on Obama, in order to make people not look seriously as John (George Bush) McCain. They know that most people are gullible and that negative jingles work better than telling the people the truth. Personally, anything than four more years of war, a failing economy and more loss of liberty sounds better than the status quo.

Obama = Carter?
Oh no!
Obama is WORSE than Carter!
Obama < Cater.
Nobody spent such big amount of money in campaign than Obama did.
How INEFFECTIVE he is? He lost so many big states even if he spent so much money.
People don't trust ADs, we know.
We don't like the fact that the presidency can be PAID.

Under Carter we became more dependant on Foriegn oil from 20% to 75%
Under the current Democrats in congress they want to repeat Carter's plan and that will make us as projected 95% dependant on foriegn oil!!
The Dems hate Progress, they hate the common folk!!
Drill Here!! Drill NOW!!!

Marianne Pepitone: I did not say that people did not like him because of the color to his skin..Millions of whites have voted for Obama..I said that its because of the color of his skin why you Marianne Pepitone don't like him. One of the main reasons why Obama is the nominee is because a large bloc of whites voted for him..he won Iowa for heaven's sake..but people like you cannot stomach a so called black man as president of these United States..You would much rather a white man as President even if the country is going down the tubes and the economy is in tatters..How is the economy Marianne? What about the forclosures and jobs loss and high unemployment rate Marianne? What about the 4000+ lives loss in Iraq and the 25,000 plus incapacitated Marianne? What about the soldiers who come home with post traumatic stress syndrome and are not the same husbands and fathers that left to go to a war that should not have been Marianne? You would vote for McCain who talks about Iraq, Iraq, Iraq and no domestic policy. A man who himself said that he does not know much about the economy. Heaven help us! Wake up America!
