Welcome Back, Carter

June 10, 2008 8:20 AM

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and his allies have come across a meme they dig -- Barack Obama = Jimmy Carter!

Last night, almost a month after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, started saying that McCain is running for President George W. Bush's third term, McCain came up with a snappy comeback.

"Senator Obama says that I’m running for Bush's third term," McCain told NBC News's Brian Williams last night. "It seems like Barack Obama is running for Jimmy Carter’s second."

Asked what he meant by that, McCain said, "spend, spend. Tax, spend."

ABC News' Bret Hovell noticed that earlier Monday at a McCain fundraiser in Richmond, Va., former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger said, "I do have a suggestion. It occurs to me that the Democratic candidate does remind me a great deal of Jimmy Carter. And perhaps we should make that identification stick."

Politico's Jonathan Martin writes that the comparison makes sense since Carter's term "is recalled by conservatives (and others) as one marked by high gas prices, weak national security and a perception of favoring Arabs over Israelis.   Not a bad combination given McCain's message against Obama….That said, there are millions of voters who either weren't born or who are too young to remember a thing about the Carter presidency besides something about a killer rabbit and Billy beer."

McCain blogger Michael Goldfarb insists it will work. "Jimmy Carter's done a nice job of keeping himself in the spotlight, writing the instant classic Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, meeting with the leadership of Hamas, certifying the election of Hugo Chavez despite allegations of fraud by the opposition, etc. etc. etc. Plus we're going to get a speech at the Democratic convention to jar everyone's memory."

But Carter hasn't been president for almost 30 years. I wonder if the comparison will mainly highlight McCain's age. It's not quite as if McCain had started chanting "Ma, ma, where's my pa? Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!" to invoke Grover Cleveland, but it's not the timeliest of references.

Though it does in a way in the larger historical context draw a comparison between President Bush and Richard Nixon…which in terms of disapproval ratings and GOP demoralization may be apt.

At least Carter ran a peanut farm. "Street organizer". Give me a break.

Lets all agree Obama is smart. No one gets through Harvard yard without being smart.

The issue is what is he doing with his inteligence? Maybe he is using that to plan his acension to the Presidency? He know what he has to say. He knows how to say it.

Smart-Knowledgeable-Articulate

BUT... has he walked his talk?

Content of Obama's character?

He talks about bi-partisanship: Never done it.

He quits his church after 20 years due to political expediency. (And say he never heard in 20 years anything bad that Rev. Wright said.)

BO is a sponge. He knows nothing. He's never owned or run a business. He's never run any part of government. You have to judge him on the influences in his life because that is where he will draw his ideas (laughably). Like I said change does not equal improvement. Be very careful what you wish for.

Texas Lil: Yes, much smarter than Obama will ever be. And Cheney is ten times smarter than Obama. I am not a republican but I can see what you don't see in Obama. You probably would vote for him like the rest of the fools that voted for him in the primaries but it was the people in the battleground states, Puerto Rico, WVA, KY and SD that were smart enough to count him out. Obama needs the word hope to help him win the election. And I hope the Latino's are smart enough not to vote for him either write her name in or vote for McCain. We don't want a disaster in this country or a dictator.

Anne: You said the right words. Obama would say or do anything to get votes. What he says is not what he is going to do. Obama doesn't care about this country, he doesn't care about the blacks or whites, he is for himself and only himself. The people of this country are fooled by his RFK speech that he copied and studied. I read all about him. The reason he doesn't want Hillary is because she would outshine him being a former first lady and knows politics inside out when he hasn't started to learn yet. God help this country if he is elected because it will go into a disaster. I hope all the Hillary voters write her name in on the ballot or vote McCain. I know that you are aware of the fact that Nancy, Dean and Reid pressured the superdelegates to vote immediately because Hillary was going to take it to the convention. They hate her and didn't want her as the nominee.

Because he is a Harvard law graduate doesn't mean he's that smart. There are a lot of Harvard law graduates in this country.

SERIOUSLY!, you wrote: "...in an illegal invasion of a sovreign nation." There was NOTHING illegal about the invasion. Saddam Hussein agreed to the 1991 cease fire contingent on several conditions -- including proving that he no longer had WMDs. After 12 years of failing to comply with ANY of the conditions, the UN Security Council issued its final ultimatum. When the UN Security Council showed signs that it had no intention of following through on its ultimatum, President Bush went to Congress and Congress gave President Bush the LEGAL authority to use our Armed Forces in Iraq. President Bush then issued his own final ultimatum to Saddam Hussein. Unlike the UN Security Council, President Bush acted on his ultimatum when Saddam Hussein refused to comply.

Now then you say that President Bush lied...a number of Democrats, including President Clinton, said that Saddam Hussein had WMDs back in 1998 when Congress gave President Clinton the authorization for regime change in Iraq. And several Democrats actually called Saddam Hussein an "imminent threat." So where is your condemnation of the "lies" told by the Democrats?

The fuel shortages started before Carter's term. The Pubs have been trying to skew that piece of history and blame that on the Dems for some time. Just look at the history of US autos and it painfully obvious that cars built in the 1972 model year(1971) differ greatly than 1973 model year. This is the time frame that the energy crunch began. The Pubs were in office, not the Dems.

um, John. It was a lame, lame, comparison.
Bottom line, the Republicans have had 8 years and if you weren't already rich when Bush took office, you are worse off now, than you were when he took office. He has been a poor, poor President, and you have stuck to him like glue. Take your lumps.

seriously: And you are as dumb as they come and need lessons in politics. The only hope Obama has is getting elected. There are limits that a president can do for the people of this country. Wake up. People have to choose on their own what they want to do in life after school. President's don't choose your life for you. Get a grip. The word hope and change he used from RFK because he cannot do anything on his own. Why do you think he is going to need help. He couldn't win any debates. And sometimes he has to think before he talks. Hope is a big word and people have to take care of themselves the president can't do that for them.

At 47 years old, I remember Carter quite clearly. I couldn't find a part-time high school job if my life depended on it. And while I was looking, gas jumped from .40/cents a gallon to $1.00 a gallon. Not to mention I got to watch nightly about the Iranians held American hostages for 445 days. Jimmy was an embarassment and BO will be as well. Change does not equal improvement. But hey, I only get one vote.

Who's Jimmy Carter?

McCain = Bush

The Truth???

"Vietnam, S Korea, Central America, Chile, Panama were examples of places we "fought for freedom and democracy" and installed puppet governments. We lost every time and wasted thousands of lives in the process. Not to mention the billions of dollars."

Let me see...I thought we stopped the invasion of South Korea by the Commie backed North? Isn't South Korea today a democracy and a captalistic success?

Chile? Panama? Nicaragua? Are not all these countries relatively democratic, free market and successful? Even Vietnam (not to mention China and Russia) have adopted free market markets. Russia is no longer the Soviet Union.

I think you Libs are living in the past WHEN IN FACT THE CIA DID DO DIRTY WORK and that part of US history is not something we should be proud of. Same thing as Indian extermination, Anti-Chinese/Irish efforts, Chasing the Mormons all the way out to Utah, etc etc.

Overall, the USA errored and continues to error on the side of freedom and democracy.

Successes like Kuwait, WWII, WWI, our own Civil War are all examples of where this country spent billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives to "error" on the side of freedom, democracy and justice.

Go to some other country and hate us from afar!

It appears that the "younger crowd" here thinks they are the majority. Saying things like "not many remember the Carter years". That's pretty funny, and self absorbed. Someone forgot to tell them that the "Boomers" are the majoriity in America, not the twenty-somethings. The majority DO remember the Carter years...and they vote...like it or not.

Obama has reminded me of Carter from the beginning!

McCain also has a VP team committee. Their main job is not to find you a VP it's the vetting process.

Obama will win traditional "blue" states, Wisconsin, Iowa, New Mexico, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Missouri possibly Indiana, Georgia and Mississippi (depending of AA turnout).

Posted by: Vanessa | Jun 10, 2008 10:21:37 AM

Stacy, I don't know where you obtained your "facts" but they are totally wrong. President Clinton may have had two years of surpluses -- 1999 was a $122.7 Billion surplus; and 2000 was about a $230 Billion surplus -- but when President Clinton left office the national DEBT was about $5.7 Trillion.

Now then it important to note that the Republicans had control of Congress during President Clinton's last 6 years in office. The Democrats controlled the Senate in President Bush's first 2 years and both Houses of Congress in his last two years. In spite of the 2000-2001 recession, the 9/11/2001 attacks, and the war on terrror (including the Battle of Iraq), President Bush actually had about 6 months of surpluses in late 2006- early 2007. But the housing market slump, sub-prime mortgage fiasco and of course the rapid rise in energy costs have hurt the economy. BUT the Democrats in Congress have blocked nearly every effort by President Bush to turn things around. That's because the Democrats care more about being re-elected than they do about our economy and the people.

Vanessa: Obama is so dumb he needs help to find a VP whereas McCain can pick a VP himself. That's what education did for Obama. Nothing. He is a know nothing do nothing and will do nothing if elected. What he says and does are two different things. He quit the church under pressure from the public. If elected guess who is coming to the white house? Wright, Ayers, Farrakhan, Father P. and his half brothers and sisters from Kenya that he never met yet in all these years. Evidently you do not have an understanding of politics and need to do some extensive studying. You say whatever comes into your head as usual. Obama wouldn't know what to do from day one. But he will have plenty of help. Kennedy, Kerry, Richardson, Nancy, Dean, Reid, Biden and others. What a mess this country would be in. Our enemies must be dancing in the street already planning their next attack. They already know about Obama that's why their so happy.

Hey Al,

I'm a white woman from MI. ALL my friends, young, old, lower and middle class, Jewish and Catholic all support Obama.

Your estimates of the problems Obama has with voters is way overblown.

All my friends and family that supported Clinton now support Obama and are doing so without any hesitation.

You are way off base.

Posted by: SERIOUSLY! | Jun 10, 2008 10:09:56 AM

The first time Obama compared himself to JFK I said, "JFK? No. Carter? Yes."
