A Perfect Way to End McCain's Week: The LA Times Probes His Divorce

July 11, 2008 10:30 AM

What better way for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to end what must have been one of his least enjoyable weeks as a candidate than with a major newspaper combing through his divorce records in a story that not only airs dirty laundry but exposes tensions between the senator and the iconic Reagans?

The story  starts with Nancy Reagan offering a terse endorsement of McCain, then explains why there may be tension -- their "friendship was strained in the late 1970s by McCain's decision to divorce his first wife, Carol, who was particularly close to the Reagans, and within weeks marry Cindy Hensley, the young heiress to a lucrative Arizona beer distributorship."

The story also states that McCain has "made several statements about how he divorced Carol and married Hensley that conflict with the public record....

"In a recent interview, McCain said he did not want to revisit the breakup of his marriage. 'I have a very good relationship with my first wife,' he said."

In McCain's 1999 autobiography, "Faith of My Fathers," McCain  accepted blame for the collapse of his first marriage and its impact on his friendship with the Reagans.

"My marriage's collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity," he wrote. "The blame was entirely mine." He also wrote that his "divorce from Carol, whom the Reagans loved, caused a change in our relationship. Nancy...was particularly upset with me and treated me on the few occasions we encountered each other after I came to Congress with a cool correctness that made her displeasure clear. I had, of course, deserved the change in our relationship."

Defenders of Bill Clinton have long argued that this kind of peek into a politician's personal lives is nobody's business. I wonder if they feel that way about McCain's story as well.

JOhn McBush's first marriage is how he will treat the US. This is about judgement the biggest lifetime judgement. GETTING MARRIED. If it does work out that is tough but DON'T LEAVE YOUR WIFE FOR ANOTHER WOMAN. THAT IS JUDGEMENT! JUDGEMENT! This will tank McCain's campaign he should be very worried about this. As Obama should have been about Jermiah Wright. This will be McCain's Jermiah Wright. It will hit him in October when he least expect it. There is some real dirt out there. Photos! It's coming. Trust.

Hmmmm . . . I may have just changed my mind on this.

McCain voted "Guilty" on Clinton's impeachment.

"cut it out with the "AGE" thing.

The Dalai Lama was born in 1931.
Should we "diss' him?

Jesus is older than anyone but "G-D".
Should we call him on his age and accuse HIM of having senior moments?

Where I work, we have men and women who
are still high ranking leaders in their 80's.

I know doctors in their 80's who while not still practicing are providing valuable leadership to national medical groups .

McCain is a worthy, experienced candidate for the office of POTUS!

He is NOT suffering from Alzheimers... and he is NO WORSE without a teleprompter than BOZO!

I like a man of substance.
We NEED a man of substance!

McCain may be plain....but he's been tried, and HE CAN BE TRUSTED!

HILLARY OR MCCAIN

BUT ALWAYS:

COUNTRY BEFORE BROKEN DOWN DNC PARTY!!!

>>(lack of )COMMON SENSE:

"THEY'VE BEEN MARRIED MORE THAN A QUARTER OF A CENTURY!!!!"

Get over it!

If you're looking for cheating... check Obama's elections in Illinois!

Check the legislation passed as "his" which was actually gifted to him by Emil Jones , Illinoisian "King Maker" in return for appropriate recognition and plenty of pork bellies.

THIS IS THE KIND OF CHEATING YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING......

HILLARY OR MCCAIN!

COUNTRY BEFORE BROKEN DOWN DNC PARTY!!
Save the rest for the Enquirer!

I'm a Democrat, I will not vote for McCain and I am still a Hillary for Pres person, however I don't believe someones personal marriage issues are any of our business unless he was physically abusive or something toward his wife. Our concern should solely be based on his ability to run the country. Discussing him as a husband is something for morning talk shows and gossip.

totally predictable. Obama did the same thing in Illinois-twice. Looking into divorce records. remember Ryan? The Rasmussen poll shows a tie. Obama getting worried.

eyes open,

"THEY'VE BEEN MARRIED MORE THAN A QUARTER OF A CENTURY!!!!"

Absolutely! Once a cheat, always a cheat. It is about time the media held McCain accountable for his lack of character and lack of family values.

Obama 08

There is nothing worse than telling lies, as they are the ones you can never trust--OBAMA has been totally irresponsible with his background vetting and his long list of questionable associates (Ayers, Rezko Sinclair, Rev. Wright, etc.) and we have the right to hold him responsible for that--to be president the standards should be high in every respect--we know the consequences.

"John McCain got his marriage license to marry Cindy on March 6, 1980. His divorce from his first wife was not final until April 2, 1980.

Isn't this the issue?

Actually, yes, I completely do. I don't agree with John McCain on politics at all, but his divorce is nobody's business. So it should not be an issue, this is in the past and has nothing to do with what he'd do as president. I know Obama's opposition researchers have a special talent at digging through divorce records, though! Ask Blair Hull or Jack Ryan.

McCAIN. THE TRUE FAMILY VALUES CANDIDATE - NOT.

Posted by: rhbate | Jul 11, 2008 6:05:47 PM

This blog and postings are nothing more than sleaze from Obama supporters.

OIver half of all marriages end in divorce and there may be many reasons for a marriage to end.

sunshine
I am a dem. but who cares if mccain has 7 children or more?

What I do know about mccain, is whatever the number of children he has he can feed, educate, and clothe them.

all I want to know about john mccain is not how many children he has to do a photo op with.

but what he is going to do to help me and mine.

please stop with this bs.

if you all didn't get so caught up in this mess, and rejected this kind of stuff, and demanded more from the news, you would be able to make an educated decision on who should lead this country for the next four years.

The circumstances of his first marriage speak to the issue of McCain's character. If we are going to portray him as a hero for being a Pow in Vietnam and defending his country, then you have to wonder about his devotion to his family and raising his children. Who would sacrifice service for thier own family?

His first wife HAS to say she supports him because she has two sons that he adopted, one of whom works for Cindy's company, and a biological daughter. Would he spurn these children if she said unflattering things? Would he not put them in his will? Do you think Cindy leaves them anything in her will?

Let's face it - McCain has been an absentee spouse and parent to both wives and he likes it that way. He married both within one year of meeting them. So he knew what he wanted then but got bored. We know he is very ambitious and wants to prove to the world and himself that he is more successful than his Admiral father and grandfather. He himself admitted that in his Navy psychological follow ups to his being released as a POW. He saw that experience as an opportunity to be more famous than his father.

HOW MANY PEOPLE KNOW HE IS FATHER TO 7 CHILDREN? DON'T THINK WE WILL EVER SEE THAT PHOTO OP, DO YOU??????

I agree,Mccain divorce was decades ago, probably about the same time Obama was doing cocaine,BUT I can't wait until someone FINALLY vets Obama. Heck lets start with seeing a real birth certificate, with a seal and signature and then go from there.

To answer your question, this Clinton defender indeed feels McCain's marital situation is -- short of there being domestic abuse or the like, or a history of hypocritical moralizing as other Republicans have engaged in (I don't recall McCain ever doing it) -- should be nobody's business. HTH.

Jake wrote: "Defenders of Bill Clinton have long argued that this kind of peek into a politician's personal lives is nobody's business. I wonder if they feel that way about McCain's story as well."

The converse is also true. Republicans pushing themselves as the "family values" party have long argued that this is EXACTLY the type of information that reveals the candidate's "values".

These are the types of tawdry personal stories that speak to what type of person the candidate is. With Bill Clinton, the stories helped fill-in the narrative of him as a skirt-chasing morally ambiguous person.

I supported Bill Clinton. I don't argue with that narrative. I also didn't worry about his womanizing as long as it didn't effect how he governed to country.

But you can't have it both ways. It has primarily the REPUBLICAN PARTY that has pushed the narrative that we need to examine these candidates' personal lives. John McCain's treatment of his first wife and reported womanizing wouldn't keep me from voting for him. I have enough reasons to not vote for him BASED ON HIS POLICIES.

However, if you're the type of voter that believes how the candidate conducts their private life directly influences what type of candidate they are, then you cannot be happy with this type of story, which reflects very poorly on John McCain and strikes many, myself included, as tawdry and ruthless political opportunism.

Sen. McCain might want to remember that the next time he's pushing himself as the 'Straight-Talker' that's the 'last honest man in politics'.

don't you all see what is happening,

you all must be doing pretty well, middle of the day and you are sitting around arguring about mccain' divorce, and what if obama divorced michelle,.

while you are are carrying on like this.
newsflash,
bozo the clown just threw his wig in the ring, he is running for POTUS.
and immediately, cnn ran a story speculating if his nose is real, and if it is really red.
