Comedian Jokes About 'Hos' at Obama Fundraiser; Obama Condemns

July 12, 2008 11:20 AM

Now this'll surely help Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., with all those still-angry supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., not to mention the feminists confused by his recent remarks on abortion.

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports that at a Chicago fundraiser last night, comedian Bernie Mac said his "little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?' "I said, ‘I don't know,’ but I said, 'I'll tell you what you do. Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000.’"

Mac's wife, in the joke, said she sleep "with anyone" for $50,000, and Mac's daughter said the same.

Explained Mac: "Hypothetically speaking, we should have $100,000. But realistically speaking we live with two hos."

Obama addressed the issue in his remarks, saying, "We can't afford to be divided by race. We can't afford to be divided by religion, or by region or class. Or by gender. That means, by the way, Bernie, you got to clean up your act. This is a family affair. ... I'm just messing with you."

Obama spox Jen Psaki issued a statement saying, "Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate."

You might recall the 2004 brouhaha after, at a Democratic fundraiser, comedian Whoopi Goldberg made a joke using the word "Bush" as not only the name of the president, but a slang term for the female reproductive organs.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., at the same fundraiser had said the performers represented "the heart and soul of America," giving Mr. Bush some trail ammo, lame double entendres notwithstanding. Slim-Fast dropped Goldberg as a spokeswoman though she's bounced back nicely as a cast member on "The View."

Barack, you already lost another million women voters...and no, sweetie, we "ain't just messing with you"!

I am a 46 college grad. It's at 50 years old and knowing the type of event he was attending he didn't think twice about his choices of how he would entertain.. It's a disgrace that some black people are just foolish and tactless. Grow up Bernie Mac.

NinaK, the McLaughlin poll (06/26 - 06/29) has Sen. Obama up by 8 points. I don't know if this is the poll to which you referred, but three of the latest polls have the following:
Rsamussen Tracking (07/11 - 07/13) - Sen. Obama up by 1 point, 47-46;
Gallup Tracking (07/10 - 07/12) - Sen. Obama up by 3 points, 46-43;
Newsweek (07/09 - 07/10) - Sen. Obama up by 3 points, 44-41.

When you factor in the slumping housing market, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the sky rocketing cost of gasoline, the hit that the economy is taking overall, and the unpopularity of the Battle of Iraq, one would think Sen. Obama should be ahead by 20-25 points. Could it be that the American electorate is actually beginning to blame the Democratic controlled Congress for some of the domestic problems? Is it just coincidence that the downturn to our economy began after the Democrats took control of Congress on January 2007?

Tess, the free market works just fine IF the politicians don't interfere. For example, the slumping housing market should be left alone. When the prices drop enough people will start buying again. And then there is energy. The politicians and environmentalists have interferred with the cost of energy for decades by restricting the building of nuclear plants, banning offshore drilling, blocking oil companies from drilling in areas in which they already have leases. The free market is not allowed to work when you place too many restrictions on it.

NinaK, I can only speak for myself. As a staunch conservative Republican, I oppose Sen. Obama based solely on his ideology. Regular readers of this blog know that I was hoping that Dr. Condoleezza Rice would run for president. But she chose not to run. I am still hoping that Sen. McCain will be able to convince her to be his running mate.

Now as for your comment, "...that these people just cannot stand the fact that a man who is black has been so successful...," it is ironic that many in the African-American community feel this way towards any African-American man or woman who is successful BUT who is ALSO a conservative Republican.

As a soon-to-be independent but current democrat I had been basking in the cool breeze of Barack Obama... until he won the nomination. There seems to be something foul in the air now and I have to say I'm not just a little afraid that Obama.Inc may have duped a great many Bush-Weary Americans. God, I hope I'm wrong!

National polls: Obama 48%, McCain 40%

A smile and a wink? Prove it!!

Has it occurred to you, self-appointed judges and juries, that "just messing with you, man" is an oxiom in the black community for "I am not messing around with you, I mean what I am saying"? What was Senator Obama's demeanor when he said that?? was he laughing and playing punching the comidian? Was he stern? Body language is important, you know?

Of course those who do not like Senator Obama for whatever reasons will jump at anything to bring him down. I truely believe these people just cannot stand the fact that a man who is black has been so successful in his 46 years of life. (I call that attitude bigotry and racism). Obviously at 46, McCain was not all that sucessful, he ran for President in 2000 at the age of 63. Now, eight later, he is again running, only now he is 71, soon to turn 72. A previous article states the comidian did not stay on course for such events and decided to make the fundraiser about HIMSELF. I am sure Senator Obama was not expecting what transpired. Reminds me of the comidian Roseanne being invited to sing the National Anthem at a ballgame; what she did was was extremely inappropriate and disgusting. Looks like these comidians have no integrity whatsoever and don't understand that such things as ballgams and fundraisers dictate different behavior from that at the Las Vegas casinos.

Worry not. McCain can't win.

Posted by: anon | Jul 13, 2008 7:18:58 PM

The polls clearly reflect the disappointment people have with Obama. It is hard to believe in a year that the Democrats should CLEARLY be so far ahead that Dean/Pelosi could have messed things up so bad. Dems, call me when you get your act together!

Posted by: Chris | Jul 13, 2008 6:35:02 PM

Stick a fork in Obama - he's done!

Posted by: Steve | Jul 13, 2008 6:31:31 PM

"I'm just messing with you."

Depends on the tone of voice,
facial expression and the
context - can clearly mean
I kid you not, I'm serious.

"I'm messing with you," would
have been better.

Posted by: anon | Jul 13, 2008 5:09:54 PM

The comic was too gross. BO
handled it admirably.

Posted by: anon | Jul 13, 2008 4:54:19 PM

Anon, I interpret "I'm just messing with you" as being synonymous with "just kidding."

Posted by: James Danley | Jul 13, 2008 4:47:55 PM

"Don't mess with me."
Everybody knows what that means.

"I'm just messing with you."
What that means is let me try
to express my disapproval of
what you just said or did.

Obama's gentle rebuke was most
appropriate befitting a
presidential candidate.

Sadly, just another example of how Obama seems to continually exercise poor judgment in his choice of affiliates and spokespeople. By this time don't we realize that this is now a pattern and not a fluke?

Posted by: Hillgirl | Jul 13, 2008 1:12:21 PM

ricky,

I don't support, nor will i try to defend john mccain and any of his vulgarity.
but the real test for any who post here,
is to stay on topic.
the article was about obama and bernie mac.

so when obama came out and told bernie told bernie off. and then said -i'm
just messing with you man.

so he was obama was really making fun of the audience-with his fake disdain.
