Comedy Is Not Pretty

July 17, 2008 10:32 AM

He has told some offensive jokes, he has told some funny jokes, and now Sen. John McCain -- a favorite on The Daily Show, a one-time guest host on Saturday Night Live -- finds his sense of humor under the microscope.

"Rooted in a time before there was political correctness, and before there was the South Park backlash against political correctness, McCain's wisecracking persona is cutting at times, self-deprecating at others, and always amused by the political process swirling around him," writes Ben Smith in the Politico this morning. "Even in his pursuit of the White House, the candidate has - sometimes to the dismay of his handlers - managed to keep his sense of humor."

Smith turns to former Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., for insight without mentioning Kerrey's struggles as a 1992 presidential candidate because of a racy joke he once told (Punchline: "and then Jerry Brown says, 'I like [performing a certain sexual act], does that make me a lesbian, too?'") Kerrey had told his joke to then-Gov. Bill Clinton, after Clinton told him a lesbian joke first, Kerrey told the New York Times about a decade later. But the C-SPAN microphone only picked up Kerrey.

In any case, back to McCain. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee got some heat last month for a joke he told referring to the age-old loaded question, "When did you stop beating your wife, senator?" In April 2007, a joke he made to Jon Stewart about an IED was criticized on the House floor by Rep. John Murtha, D-Penn., McCain told Diane Sawyer that Murtha and other critics should "lighten up and get a life."

i want a t-shirt of the cover. never seen such a perfect, and true, depiction of a candidate and his wife!

McCain, like Bush, tends to be "funny" when he doesn't intend to be. Really not so much "funny, ha-ha", as "funny, what was he thinking!"

I agree that McCain is stuck in the 20th Century (if not the 19th, even), and we no longer have room for a dinosaur in the Oval Office.

The problem with the New Yorker cover is not its intention as satire -- most thinking evolved people get that. The problem is -- as we're seeing, the right wing-nuts ability to take that image and run with it using their own copy to extend the reach of their racist, sexist, evil message that led to the piece being satire in the first place.

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

LOL, the only funny thing about McBush is the fact that he thinks people are actually taking him seriously! LOL, jokes on him I'm sure.

Oh my, whatever will we do if our President doesn't have a sense of Houmor....focus on the ISSUES?

W is very Hillarious and look where that took America.

DUHHHH?

Right Buford. And his supporters are his albatross. The tighter they are wound, the further they scatter when they unwind with all the focus of that explosion being directed at the central thread: Obama. It isn't so much about his inflated sense of self-importance; it is about their's. When they find out no one cares, they unwind explosively. I saw that happen recently at a family gathering. Ugly.

Obama should have done with the New Yorker cover exactly what Obama's supporters told Clinton she should do with the nutcracker: buy them and give them away as joke presents.

Monsters Inc had it right: laugh at the monsters underneath your bed. They will go away and you can go back to sleep.

Well, this thread pretty much shows that Obama's supporters have no sense of humor, whether Obama does or not. Self righteousness doesn't allow for self deprecating humor.

McCharacter has flaws, humour or lack of humour is not one of them. That's Obama's flaw.

Please stop focusing on McCain. Barak has a sence of humor that can be compared to none. Just listen to his speeches; and he does them with a straight face.

The reason political candidates make appearances on Leno, Letterman and the Daily Show in the first place is that a sense of humor makes them seem more human and appealing. And an candidates who are willing to laugh at themselves seem even more so.

That is why Team Obama did so much damage with their humorless response to the New Yorker cover, which, as Jon Steward humorously pointed out, is—after all—just a cartoon.

Give me John McCain’s flawed sense of humor over a humorless candidate any day of the week.

I do not trust political candidates who take themselves too seriously. They are a little too tightly wound.

At least he has a sense of humor. It may be inappropriate at times but it shows he's human and not as Maureen Dowd so aptly described Obama as tightly wrapped, overcalculated and airless. Humor shows humility.

"Perhaps Obama has something else in mind. Just maybe Obama doesn't consider this to be a game. Rather than liar's poker, maybe he prefers behaving and treating others like adults."

Perhaps Obama prefers pigs that can fly but you know, that only works in football when the pig can't object.

>>"Fist bumps aren't funny"

>Was it mean't to be funny?

It was meant to be trendy. It looked like a secret decoder ring thing. Most people treat their wives better than to punch them. Kid stuff. Gangsta stuff.

>>"Bernie Mac wasn't funny"

>That's Bernie Mac, Not Obama

Which goes to judgement. Hopefully he can pick cabinets better than entertainers. Call Cedric next time.

>>"Giving your opponent the finger or >>the brush off isn't funny"

>A figment of your imagination. Untrue, >just a rumor.

Sure fooled a lot of people in that crowd then.

>Not only are we talking to our enemies >but the Iraqis want our troops out.

Show me your polling numbers. I suspect you'll find some do, some don't. But there is no physical means of meeting that 16 month deadline Obama set. We will leave, no doubt but anyone knows that. How long? No one knows that. Since the surge is working, it will be sooner than it would have been had we started pulling troops out earlier.

I am amazed at the intensity of the Obama supporters at favoring enemies over our own country. Why do you hate America?

Wow! Ye Olde Bush Lines really work!

Obama must not have a sense of humor, otherwise he surely would have thought the New Yorker cover showing his wife with an Ak-47 strapped on was hilarious.
He needs to take lessons from McCain, who knows that treating women with disrespect is a lot of fun.

Nope. It shows that holding cards close and playing them at the right time is the essence of liar's poker. And that is the essence of international politics. To believe otherwise is naive.

You don't get it, Jane. It's not the face value of the card. It's whether or not it has value to your own hand.

Cluetrain:

1. They are enriching uranium and they do intend to weaponize it.

2. They will join MAD. They can't use these weapons without being anilhilated.

3. These are expensive to build but more expensive to own.

The question is not when they will build nuclear weapons. Now you have to figure out what the value of the hand they hold is to our hand. Letting go of the preconditions card at the right time bought time. Time was the high value card. What did we do with it?

Well, you have to figure that out. Obama is an amateur and high stakes games with amateurs fatten the pot for the professionals. The Iranians are pros. Note we are not the only players at this table. Liar's poker is played with partners. Note the Turks. Obama's self-enriching plays take value from the partner's hand and give it to the opponents.

Not smart poker. His lack of experience is what this demonstrates, not his ability to see what ANYONE knows who plays.

Also Len,
Not only are we talking to our enemies (something both George Bush and McCain mocked Obama for) but the Iraqis want our troops out. Both George Bush and McCain admitted if the Iraqis wanted us out then we would leave. I guess McCain 100 years policy needs some "refining".

The Bush Admins "pre-condition" for talking to Iran was the confirmation that they were not enriching uranium. They have not done that yet, and we are still going to have talks with them.

So I guess "without preconditions" is exactly what we are prepared to do.

"Shows Obama has good judgement and McCain is, well, confused!"

Nope. It shows that holding cards close and playing them at the right time is the essence of liar's poker. And that is the essence of international politics. To believe otherwise is naive.

Telling your opponent that you are bluffing is how you lose. Everyone knows the negotiations are going to take place. It is the preconditions card that he showed early that proved him to be a very poor player.

Experienced players understand this. Inexperienced players fatten the pot for the other guy. Obama is a fool.

Posted by: len | Jul 17, 2008 11:17:06 AM

Mary,

Obama's "poor judgement" leads him to beleive that we should talk to our enemies. McCain had a field day with that, saying Obama is naive. But wait...what are we doing...talking with our enemies!!! Shows Obama has good judgement and McCain is, well, confused!
