DNC Sees Cindy McCain's Wealth as Fair Game
July 18, 2008 11:55 AM
CNN this week took a look at Cindy McCain's wealth this week, reporting that she "is not only a wife to Senator John McCain, she is also his meal ticket. Her reported 2006 income of more than $6 million exceeded her husband's earnings 16 times over. That money pays for a wealthy lifestyle of high end condos, an Arizona ranch, flying in a corporate jet, and more." The story quoted a writer from the Politico saying that her beer distributorship funded his first congressional campaign and has subsidized his presidential campaign.
CNN correspondent David Mattingly reported that "as president, McCain would run a mammoth bureaucracy with regulatory control over alcohol sales, distribution and consumption. The next administration would probably have to deal with issues of beer taxes, labeling, maybe even the politically sensitive international merger just announced involving the giant Anheuser-Busch. These are all issues that could create a conflict because they could have an impact on the McCain family bottom line."
The story noted this 2005 letter from McCain's son Andrew -- posted in a Los Angeles Times story about possible conflicts regarding McCain's political career and Cindy's business -- lobbying against a federal beer labeling proposal.
Asked by host Campbell Brown if he saw any "red flags" in this story, DNC adviser Jamal Simmons said yes.
"The real question is not so much about what Cindy McCain does for a living," Simmons said, "She can do whatever she wants to do for a living. This is America."
Simmons said the issue is that McCain had promised "to lead a transparent government, and he's so far, he's not leading a transparent campaign...He hasn't talked about how much he pays, or why he doesn't pay full fare for those airplane flights he flies around that (corporate) jet. He doesn't talk about what's going to happen to his Cindy McCain if he goes into the White House. And so the question is, of course he listens to somebody like Phil Gramm who thinks that the economy is all in our heads, or the economic problems are all mental, because with John McCain, he has eight houses. They spend $750,000 on credit cards in one month. And he's flying around the country in his corporate jet."
Simmons said that shows that McCain is "not in touch where most of Americans are. That month where he was spending $750,000 on credit card debts, it was from March 2007 until the beginning of 2008, middle of 2008. And that's when they were spending all the money of credit cards. They would not have been able to keep the John McCain campaign alive had he not had this personal wealth."
Republicans say this shows the Obama campaign is hypocritical when it gets mad when Michelle Obama is attacked, since Democrats are attacking Cindy. Democrats say you can't compare impugning Michelle's patriotism with questioning whether Sen. McCain is improperly using his wife's fortune, or asking about potential financial conflicts of interest.
This all comes the same week the Washington State GOP put up a web video attacking Michelle , prompting -- per Ben Smith at the Politico -- the Obama campaign's Bill Burton to say "With our economy in shambles, our nation at war and our challenges mounting by the day, it is beyond sad that the Republican Party of Washington would spend its time launching shameful attacks on the wife of a candidate--attacks our current First Lady Laura Bush has decried . Michelle Obama has lived the American Dream, and it’s love of country that leads Michelle and Barack to make this race. But how does it strengthen our country to pollute our politics with false and mean-spirited attacks? John McCain promised us better. It's up to him to curb these tactics, or take responsibility for them."
RNC spox Danny Diaz responded with: "Is Barack Obama going to speak to his operative's attacks against Cindy McCain?" (That's a reference to Simmons.) "The WA GOP's actions were completely independent of the McCain campaign and RNC, the same cannot be said for Obama's handpicked spokesperson at the DNC.
In an interview with Glamour magazine published Thursday, Sen. Obama said he didn't want anyone in his campaign or the DNC to attack Cindy McCain. "I've said this before: I would never have my campaign engage in a concerted effort to make Cindy McCain an issue, and I would not expect the Democratic National Committee or people who were allied with me to do it. Because essentially, spouses are civilians. They didn't sign up for this. They're supporting their spouse," Obama said

to the uniformed comment that the McCains do not pay interest on their American Express bill. It is obvious that you never had an American Express card. I have the same deal. Nobody pays interest on AMEX Card if it is paid on time. You do pay a penelty if not paid on time. I don't that think Cindy McCain will have a problem with that.

Here are several ways that McCain could fix this "problem":
-McCain concedes now to Obama
-McCain divorces his wife if he wins
-McCain and his wife pledge to sell all of her stock and gives it to the poor if he wins
-McCain and his wife pledge to put their stock in a blind trust run by Jesse Jackson if he wins
-McCain vetoes any legislation that could conceivably benefit any company in which he and his wife owe stock directly or through a mutual fund or the Senate's retirement plan.
Just kidding.

Senator McCain thought it was so horrible that young people have to pay into Social Security, in order for retirees to draw a Social Security check. How hypocritical can you get? The Social Security system was designed that way! But please do tell us Senator McCain, why are you drawing $23,157. per year in Social Security, while at the same time you are receiving a $58,358. Navy pension and a senator's salary of $161,708, while at the same time, you are married to a millionaire?
I guess we could just say those are FAKE tears for all those young people who pay into Social Security,so you can get that $23,157 Social Security checks.

to yesiamaconservative:
Teresa Kerry's wealth was a huge issue for the "cons." Turn about is fair play! No one is attacking Cinny's character, no one is calling her names. It just needs to be pointed out that her business could be a conflict of interest and that there is no way the McC's can possibly relate to the average American with a credit card bill of $750,000 a month. All of that is fair game. If you can call Michelle names to defame her character, we certainly can point out the conflicts of interest and ask for reports on how Johnny is spending the money that seems to go from Cinny to the campaign.

To cincyr:
I guess it just depends on what your values and priorities are. Yours, as you stated, are about banning abortion, guns for all, and keeping your tax money. Mine are about caring for the children who are already here and insuring that they grow up with the same advantages as everyone else, insuring that irresponsible lunatics do not get their hands on guns and insuring that the money that I pay in taxes does not go to support a war we never should have waged in the first place and which has cost thousands of American and Iraqi lives and which is also responsible for the economic mess we are now in. It's all about priorities, cincyr. Obama vs McCain? May the man on the side the the angels win! We will soon see which is which. Peace!

While they're at it, somebody might want to look at what made MRS. Obama's executive services at U/C suddenly worth an annual 350,000 a year as soon as Big Daddy was elected to the Illinois State Senate . . .

Wow. You guys all need to get out more often. It doesn't matter who gets elected because the REAL power behind the throne will still be there. That power is the institution known as the corporation. These artificial constructs are out of control and should be called to account for their blatant disregard for the law.

Did Sam say something about McCain spending his Social Security check at the gambling table in Vegas? And what was Jane Hussein's response. Is WWF still on so I can get back to non-fiction?

I read the article and followed the link to the CNN transcript. There is nothing in the article or remarks by Jamal Simmons to justify the headline.
Nobody associated with Obama or the DNC said anything remotely critical of Mrs, McCain. John McCain's use of her jets for his campaign was questioned.
This is distortion by one network of a two day old story at another network.
Please delete this as soon as possible so that the nuts who want to attack either Cindy McCain or Michelle Obama can continue their field day of bottom feeding vituperation.

Cindy McCain has used a her money to help children... and has even adopted a daughter who was in need of serious medical attention.
Her income has nothing to do with us!
The stories you slander her with have nothing to do with us!
Cindy is a classy lady who has accomplished a lot of good with her money ... who doesn't deserve being bad mouthed by the dumb remaining dems just because they don't have Hillary to slam any more.
John Mccain doesn't have the suavity of of a Chicago politician.... but he's got substance in lieu of glitter....
and I like that in a Presidential contender!
HILLARY OR MCCAIN...
But always:
COUNTRY BEFORE BUSTED DNC !!!!!

Yeh!
With the help of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!!!!

When CNN referred to Cindy McCain subsidizing His campaign, it was also noted she has not given his campaign. The subsidy is paying for his transportation on the jet. I think it is misleading you did not include that.
I would rather have her pay for the jet than us taxpayers. The taxpayers are paying for Obama's campaign trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, for his photo ops. He is saying it is a "senate trip". PUMA

Since when is making money in a capitalist society a sin? Don't forget that you need the people who make the money so Obama can take it and redistribute it.

This is no different than anything else in life. It's all about Perpective, what they have experienced, how they see things based on their experience.Michelle Obama has the right to speak about Anything, from her perpective. Now, unless you are an African American, or any other person of color,(even then, there may some differences in one's perpective)how can you First: speak to or even attempt to speak to how someone WHO IS of Color,Does,Should or Will see things, and Secondly:WHY WOULD YOU?

Wow Aston, I have read every post you have made and none of them have any real content in them. No basis in fact, nothing constructive, just flaming. Incredible.
I think the American Public has learned what family money can do to a President. I don't think we'll let it happen again soon. The key word being soon. We'll probably forget in a few decades.

Where one earth did you get the idea that your tax dollars support the Democratic National Committee?
Posted by: Brooklyn Democrat | Jul 18, 2008 4:22:10 PM
When a case before a federal judicial panel involves a party with whom the judge has a financial interest, the judge is obligated to recuse himself or herself from the case.
That option is not open to the president of the United States; there's no "co-president" to whom the president can defer.
Over the next four years, matters will come up before Congress and the presidency that will directly affect Cindy McCain's bottom line. They will also affect John McCain's bottom line.
It's perfectly reasonable to wonder what effect such matters will have on McCain's decisions as president. Especially since Cindy McCain refuses to divulge anything that bears on how her income is actually derived.
Equally, the American people have an interest in considering the dollar value of Cindy McCain's financial support of her husband's campaign, especially relating to matters subject to campaign finance disclosure rules - as with the use of her company's corporate aircraft in lieu of public transport.
These issues are all the more pertinent because John McCain stakes his reputation as a straight-talking reformer of campaign financing.
A little transparency would help his claim.

It should also be noted that the McCain's have a special deal with American Express where they pay no interest on that $750,000 credit card bill.
It's nice being an heiress in America... although I thought we kicked the royalty out of our country about 250 years ago... at the point of a gun.
Maybe it's again time to take out the garbage?

McCain gets around his own campaign finance laws by using his wife's corporate jet.
That's a MAJOR expense for these campaigns.
Clever how McCain's laws work so well for... the rich.
But nothing new. He's a Republican after all, and his voting record is extremely corrupt.
