German Intrigue: Did Bush Official Ask Merkel to Prevent Obama From Speaking at Brandenburg Gate?
July 10, 2008 9:36 PM
The plot thickens … on German Chancellor Angela Merkel's reluctance to let Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., deliver an address at Berlin's famous Brandenburg Gate.
Der Spiegel writes: "The respected Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported this week that a member of the Bush delegation approached Merkel's foreign policy advisor, Christoph Heusgen, at the G-8 summit in Japan to discuss misgivings about Obama's planned speech."
HERE'S the story in question, from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which does indeed report in German as follows: "Es heißt, der außenpolitische Berater der Bundeskanzlerin, Christoph Heusgen, sei auf dem G-8-Gipfel in Japan von einem Berater Bushs angeblafft worden wegen Obamas Plänen."

I love the notion that Obama lacks a "respect for the office" expounded by right-wingnuts. Your republican President (and 6 years of non-existent republican congressional oversight) has done far more to besmirch "the office." Lying america into a war, gross governing incompetence (Katrina, CPA, etc.), and criminal violations to the constitution and international law all smack of a complete disregard to the office and America in general.

First the seal, and now this. Obama acts as though he has already been elected. Even Clinton at least showed respect for the office.
Obama respects nothing other than what he sees in the mirror.

i am petrified at the damage the republicans can do with a few more months in our office. there philosophy,i cant spell that. give the money to corporate america and it will trickle down doesnt work when all they think about is using the money to move the companys to china and india where they can take advantage of comunist wages and screw the american worker. there even having are military equipment made there. which by the way is my tax dollors and i disagree.

This has been denied folks, by the German Govt, an for that matter our folks. President Bush could care less where Sen Obama speaks, just like he does not consider the Polls. But Sen Obama an some at MSNBC have already figured that he is the next President. They speak in those terms. Remember the make shift Seal?? My question is this, how come he is tied with Sen McCain in the Gallup tracking Poll??? This man should be 30 points ahead. Sen Obama has realized that his ability to give speeches is really the only strong point that he has. An the MSM just loves that as well. He is not good in Press conferences or debates.

Beware Pres. Bush has Godly powers he can cause Hurricane to hit specific locations, oreder other countries to do things Beware!!
Why would anyone go against Pres. Bush, you libs treat him as a God!!
yes Pres. Bush is one of the greatest Presidents we have had for his vision to see the real enemy and fight them on their ground instead of ours!!
It was wrong for Obama to ask to talk there, he is no leader, he was just using it for political purposes to make himself look like JFK and Reagan
Why is he going to Germany anyhow, is he not running here? But then again maybe he should run in Germany we would be better off.

Since when do politicians visiting foreign countries tell the host where they will go, what they will say and who they will meet with?
Isn´t it the host of the country that determines the forum that it offers it´s political guests?
Why doesn´t Mugabe go to the the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and give a speech blasting the west?
Or the Iranian president go to Berlin and put on a spectacle presentation railing against Jews and the U.S.?
Obama is a first-term U.S. Senator who has not yet been formally selected has the Democratic nominee for President.
He just wants to use this opportunity in Berlin to make political advertisements to use in the U.S.

.....If Bush officials are privately trying to nix a speech that would give Obama a major boost it's an interesting development and raises more questions... such as whether the administration is possibly letting efforts to help McCain intrude on back-channel diplomacy in other areas.

So this rift that is happening ion the German government between Merkel on one side and almost all of her surrounding officials including everyone from her Vice Chancellor to the mayor of Berlin not to mention the survers they are doing of Germans...(who by the way from almost all accounts are overwhelmingly supportive of Obama speaking there)
is not being caused by Obama...but the Bush administration interfering on McCain's behalf?

Hey Keith,
re: Backrub
Good one -
Maybe Ahmejinedad needs one too? Maybe it's the start of Backrub Diplomacy?
Thanks for the chuckle....

I can understand Bush pulling a stunt like this. Everyone knows in his next life, he'll return as a snake.
But for the German Chancellor to agree to it, I guess I'm amazed that she'd cut off her nose to spite her face . . . .
In diplomatic circles, this won't go unnoticed.

Bush knows he has no influence on the American people (what's his approval rating now , a 2? ) so he's moving on to the people of Germany. Only someone with Bush's insight could think that ANYONE in Germany cares what he thinks.

Tell Obama all he needs to worry about is making sure that teleprompter is in place. He's a disaster without it.

McCain used 3 telepromters at a recent town hall meeting. Did you see contortions and agony on McCain's face when he was asked Thursday 7/10/08 by a reporter "Is it fair Viagra is covered medically and birth control pills are not?" The reporter also asked McCain why he voted against covering birth control pills. He was squirming like nobody's business. Now who's a disaster without the telepromter?

This has nothing to do with Obama, but as another example of the Bush administration trying to use their clout to unethically obstruct their opponents in the political arena. As for Obama trying to emulate JFK? I'd rather that than have him, like McCain, emulate Bush.

Can USA please give us the only human that looks like a Presidential material? Others are just not good enough. I am still imagining how Obama will be among other presidents. Who is afraid of this young, charming and intelligent man? Has the world lost the ability to appreciate good stuff? No wonder the world is like this!
