Hot Mic Catches Jesse Jackson Hammering Obama; Jackson Apologizes

July 09, 2008 4:33 PM

Apparently unaware of a hot microphone, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, made a crude and disparaging remark along the lines of wanting to rip Obama's genitals off in reference to how Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., might be alienating African-Americans with various moral instructions.

Jackson has issued this apology, saying: "For any harm or hurt that this hot mic private conversation may have caused, I apologize.  My support for Senator Obama’s campaign is wide, deep and unequivocal.  I cherish this redemptive and historical moment. My appeal was for the moral content of his message to not only deal with the personal and moral responsibility of black males, but to deal with the collective moral responsibility of government and the public policy which would be a corrective action for the lack of good choices that often led to their irresponsibility."

Concluded Jackson: "That was the context of my private conversation and it does not reflect any disparagement on my part for the historic event in which we are involved or my pride in Senator Barack Obama, who is leading it, whom I have supported by crisscrossing this nation in every level of media and audience from the beginning in absolute terms."

The Obama campaign has no plans to respond as of now.

But here's something you don't see every day.

Rep. Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., D-Ill. just released the following statement as a reaction to the crude and disparaging remarks his father -- the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.

Says Jackson JUNIOR in a statement: "I'm deeply outraged and disappointed in Reverend Jackson's reckless statements about Senator Barack Obama.  His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee -- and I believe the next president of the United States -- contradict his inspiring and courageous career. Instead of tearing others down, Barack Obama wants to build the country up and bring people together so that we can move forward, together -- as one nation.  The remarks like those uttered on Fox by Revered Jackson do not advance the campaign's cause of building a more perfect Union."

Concludes Rep. Jackson, Jr.: "Revered Jackson is my dad and I'll always love him.  He should know how hard that I've worked for the last year and a half as a national co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign.  So, I thoroughly reject and repudiate his ugly rhetoric.  He should keep hope alive and any personal attacks and insults to himself."

The Obama campaign issued a statement late Wednesday, accepting the apology but continuing the underlying message.

"As someone who grew up without a father in the home, Senator Obama has spoken and written for many years about the issue of parental responsibility, including the importance of fathers participating in their children's lives. He also discusses our responsibility as a society to provide jobs, justice, and opportunity for all. He will continue to speak out about our responsibilities to ourselves and each other, and he of course accepts Reverend Jackson's apology," said spokesman Bill Burton.

First let me say, everyone had to know Jesse was going to be mad. Lets face it how many times has he ran for President and failed.. I think in this day and time anyone should be able to speak his or her mind. However that doesnt mean we want to hear it. I think Obama has a lot of issues left over from Bush, I say let our president do his job and those who feel they need someone to hold their hand, call some one who cares. Who has been holding Jesse hands from his first lost when running for preseident? One last thing, I am proud we have a African American President, Jesse the reason you didnt win is you were not the right man for the job!! Obama you are doing a great job cont. to hold that head high!!!!!

Two people must fade into obscurity after this election: Sarah Palin and Jesse Jackson.

I work in broadcast...this was not a stunt. Things like this happen quite a bit. They just aren't usually worth airing.

I welcome Senator Barack Obama, as the leader of the Democratic Party. He deverves respect and should be respected by all. He happen to be the one who is ripping the profit of all those who preceded him, including Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jr.
Nevertheless, it is an unfortunate twist of tongue, politicians do, a time. Although, unofficial, people should not take it seriously.
I have great respect for both leaders. I do sincerely hope we will continue to march " hand in hand" until the final victory we all have been waiting for centuries ago. Forward! should be our cry. Peace and Unity among ALL American Citizen! America deserve the BEST!
Let's give it!
Respectfully.
Max.

I personal feel that maybe the "Rev" should be taken off Jesse Jackson name because the question is: Is he really acting like a minister of God?

I see this for what it is another attempt to divide the country and keep America head down the toilet. Rev. Jesse Jackson came in on the coat tail of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he in and of himself dose not have any qualifications in the smallest {no legal standing to call himself a leader, not that he hasn’t tried} when he was trying to run for office his mouth got him into trouble. The fact that he is even on TV speaks to the lack of true or perceived leadership in the African American community. Yes, we have had some problems in deciding what we want to be called . After years of being in the dark when you come into the light it takes a little time to adjust to the light that why all the different name for our race nevertheless I think we have it right now. If you think a good leader would lie to you then you have the wrong man in President Obama. What good leader when given the opportunity to speak would not say you have the power to make your own environment better, regardless of what ever happens these are the changes that can make you better? When President Obama responded to what his former Pastor said he told everybody then that yes there has been racism in the past that has play a big part in the condition of African Americans, but speaking to African Americans he talked about what we need to do as a people to help ourselves, God bless him for it. I could careless what you people do but if you want to change the status quo you need to elitist Obama’s ideas and methods because if you haven’t checked lately we are all in the same boat.

Berating Obama for urging PEOPLE to be more responsible shows Jesse Jackson's envy for Obama, his lack of morals and his guilt for his OWN irresponsible ways (fathering a child out of wedlock). He felt Obama's words were a direct insult to him. It is no secret that there are serious issues that need to be addressed in the Black community...and there are similar issues in other communities as well. If we ALL work towards improving ourselves, our families, and our communities we can make a significant difference in the world as a whole. It could have an impact on crime rates, the economy, the family structure, HIV cases, etc... EVERYONE can beneifit from this. We ALL need to be more socially and personally responsible...no matter what color you are. And if African -Americans have a problem with Obama or Cosby's words (We need a change and more responsibile fathers in our community), that's where part of the problem lies...within themselves. When you stand up to help yourself others are more incline to help you. African Americans will have to contend with injustices from the womb to the tomb, but we should never lie down and give up. We are descendents of Kings, Queens and Warriors...be more prideful, united and honorable. Come on my People!! Obama 08'

I agree that Obama is sinking and has dug his own grave and digging deeper every day! Let's take away his salary and rights as a politician, make him middle class and then see if he finds it funny when a politician such as himself stands up criticizing black middle class citizens...

I can't make any comment except:

Heh heh heh. It's just funny, very funny. I love this kind of stuff...I don't care who is hurt or helped by it, it just cracks me up...

This goes to show one that regardless of how Jesse Jackson portrays himself publically he is just another human being who one has to build trust in and see him for his works. Personally I don't care for the guy~

Shame on him, Obama has to be careful, Jesse Jackson is not reliable, as far as I am concerned Jackson is flip flop politician so Obama has to be cautious on those kind of politician.

Not that a person cannot make a mistake, even one as huge as fathering a child outside of his marriage, however it does weaken Rev. Jackson's ability to speak on issues such as personal responsibility when he himself lacked the moral fiber to "just say no." From the looks of it, Presidential Candidate Barak Obama is a good, wholesome family man who loves his wife and children. Is he perfect? No. But, he is the perfect one to speak to the African American male community about personal responsibility. He's only "talking down" to those men who are refusing to step up. To the rest of us, we're not offended. What office was Jessie Jackson elected to by any one, or what church does he pastor that he should presume to speak as a leader for the African American community. As for the "passion" that Jackson speaks of, we don't need passion, we've had years of that and no "action." Obama brings solutions to all people. He message speaks to white men who have abandoned their children also.

Since when did skin color matter? Why can't we focus on the person instead of their looks? Will we discriminate against hair color next? What about eye color?

So Jesse, who previously shook down the Obama campaign to his son a job shoots off at the mouth and gets caught. When are people going to recognize what this fool is all about. It is well documented how he has used the race card to get what he wants with no personal investment of time, effort, or money. His latest shake down involves the merger of Sirius and XM. He has informed the FCC and the Justice Department that he will not file a complaint if 20% of the channels are dedicated to "minority programming". I wonder which relative will be responsible for the programming on these stations. I guess all the hip hop, Jamie Fox channels, et al. is not enough for this free loader. Is he going to promise all African Americans reparations for slavery too? Here is a thought, Africans enslaved Africans for centuries. Want another, be thankful you were born in the USA and not Darfur, Zimbawe, Nigeria, etc...... Stop blaming everyone else and take responsibility for yourself.

This is all so aggevating to read. Black people or African Americans or whatever they want to call themselves these days should wake up to the fact that they need to make changes within themselves to become successful and more accepted. Many people from other countries & cultures have come to the US and worked hard to get where they are. For instance the Jews after the holocoust, the penniless hispanics from poor countries, the polish... They have come here, work hard and are accepted and successful. They aren't concentrating on "oh poor me" and relying on govenrment to take care of them. Skin color doesn't matter. Although I won't vote for Obama because of other issues, he is right. The African Americans need to stop thinking about what we should be doing for them and start improving their own lives so others look at them with less condensending eyes. There is a reason they are looked at the way they are. One of the big ones is Jesse Jackson. He says he is trying to gain equality for blacks. He is making it worse. He is certainly no MLK. Too bad this election is turning into a racial election as opposed to who the best candidate is!

The media doesn't care that this was a Jackson-Obama set up. It's news and ratings either way.

It's up to us, as intelligent Americans, to recognize that Jackson, who began his media career in 1968 and has used his media savvy to build an empire, would never, ever make such outrageous remarks while wearing a mic unless it was a planned act.

Jackson knows mics are always potentially hot, if for no other reason than to catch off-the-cuff remarks from people like him.

This was a planned campaign act to attempt to boost Obama in the white community. Obama knows he has the black vote wrapped up no matter what he says and does.

Wake up, folks. You are being manipulated by P.T. Obama.

Posted by: Tye | Jul 10, 2008 12:11:41 PM

This mistake was while going on a Fox News Show. O'Reilly last night said they have more comments that are much worse but he doesn't want to pile on Jackson. I think Fox has an obligation to air it all.

Obama has "talked down" to Black people throughout his campaign by avoiding real solutions to working people's problems, demanding uncritical loyalty, and giving nothing in return.

It goes deeper than encouraging parental responsibility, and supporting faith-based bribes. Obama is satisfied running as a symbol, but sells out when expedient, like he did with the housing developments in Chicago, which he helped privatize, and let fall into deplorable conditions. This displaced the same blacks who ran to support him, and benefitted people like Rezco and other Chicago money-grubbers.

More recently,Obama had a chance to support a 90-day moratorium on home foreclosures, but caved to his Wall Street special interests.

Obama has always dumbed down the conversation, and trained blacks voters to shut up and support him...or else.

Rev. Jackson must have been stung being such an "exemplary" father.
