Microphone Picks Up Private Conversation Between Obama and British Leader on Need for Vacations and 'Thinking' Time

July 26, 2008 8:40 AM

At British Parliament today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met with Tory Leader David Cameron.

Seemingly unaware of an enormous fuzzy boom mike held by ABC News' Eric Kerchner, the two chatted casually -- and privately.

"You should be on the beach," Cameron told Obama. "You need a break. Well, you need to be able to keep your head together."

"You've got to refresh yourself," agreed Obama.

"Do you have a break at all?" asked Cameron.

"I have not," said Obama. "I am going to take a week in August. But I agree with you that somebody, somebody who had worked in the White House who -- not Clinton himself, but somebody who had been close to the process --  said that, should we be successful, that actually the most important thing you need to do is to have big chunks of time during the day when all you're doing is thinking. And the biggest mistake that a lot of these folks make is just feeling as if you have to be -- "

"These guys just chalk your diary up," said Cameron, referring to a packed schedule.

"Right," Obama said. "In 15 minute increments …"

"We call it the dentist's waiting room," Cameron said. "You have to scrap that because you've got to have time."

"And, well, and you start making mistakes," Obama said, "or you lose the big picture. Or you lose a sense of, I think you lose a feel-- "

"Your feeling," interrupted Cameron. "And that is exactly what politics is all about. The judgment you bring to make decisions."

"That's exactly right," Obama said. "And the truth is that we've got a bunch of smart people, I think, who know ten times more than we do about the specifics of the topics. And so if what you're trying to do is micromanage and solve everything then you end up being a dilettante but you have to have enough knowledge to make good judgments about the choices that are presented to you."

The more Senator Obama talks the more clear it becomes that he knows nothing and has done nothing. He may wear a pin-stripe suit and silk ties but he's just the wizard of oz or a carnival barker working a crowd. He should be running for county commissioner in downstate Illinois.

Yep. This was a 'private' conversation that they were having. Does this sound like ANYTHING you've heard Obama say off the cuff before? IT WAS SCRIPTED! It was meant to be heard and recorded. The whole conversation revolves around how much insight that Obama seems to have on what a president should be doing to be effective. What a load of manure. Wake up people. You are being manipulated.

I basically like and agree with what Obama says here, but the people who say it's a set-up, of course they knew the mic was there, are probably right.

Whatever else he may be, Obama is just another manipulating politician. "Change" and "hope" are just his campaign themes, as empty as most others.

The thing that worries me is the lack of executive experiece. It looks like Mr. Obama needs an MBA to know how to choose an executive team and how to orchestrate administrative success. By the way, there is a big difference between experts and partisans.

Obama would make a great president for ..... Europe.

McCain 08

I worked as a Network Systems Engineer for NBC.

The premise they didn't know there was boom mic was live is preposterous.

It's called playing to the audience.

Can someone please explain how the media took the socialist side? Is this what happens in a country before it falls apart like the Soviet Union did? Why are a select few reporters deciding the president of the United States......Just wondering.

This is horrible. We don't need no "thinker" as a President. We need someone who reacts to situations the right way all the time and worries about the consequences later. Now that's true leadership! Go McCain!

Obama is auditioning for Pres. of the EU. Glad to see his alleged "bounce" has not made a hill of beans here at home. Not that McCain is a much better choice he is the lesser of 2 evils.

Obama is NOT Presidential material period; not only due to lack of experience but his lack of actual credentials. Pandering to the EU is NOT what I want. How can America lead like that? A combo Carter/Kerry/Elitists wannabe? No thank you.

Wake up America, we've all been had!

I'm not an Obama fan, but what Cameron and he says are true. You need to think before you act, listen to the experts, then use your moral judgement to decide upon action.

This is just common sense stuff. Not sure why it is news.

First of all Drudge shot down Hillary so much and uplifted everything Obama did or said or did not say. Drudge even defended Rev. Wright.

We are soooo CRAZY as Americans if we cannot think for ourselves and elect a President. Please folks weigh everything and do not let the media elect a President for us.

The funny thing is about this fool (obama) is that he never would have gone on this trip if McCain wouldn't have told him to! He can't stand the military. He'll never admit that publically, because he's a politian, but it's true. And to all you other military haters... we fight so you can continue to enjoy the freedom that you take for granted. Without the military, you'd be speaking Russion right now. You need to realize how good you have it, and remember who "hooked you up"... the men and women fighting for us! McCain is a leader, Obama is simply not ready to be president. A first term senator with no executive experience... you've got to be kidding me. A man that chooses to work out instead of visiting the wounded troops fighting for us because he couldn't bring in the media and get showered with attention for doing so? You've really got to be kidding me. Obama says he's for "change" but he is exactly like every other politian... he does and says whatever people want to hear. Pull the wool off your eyes, people! No matter what you think of Bush, the fact is that America has not had a terrorist attack on our soil since 911, and that is due to sound leadership. If we elect Obama, we will be attacked over and over, because he is weak and inexperienced. The terrorists want him to be elected...doesn't that tell you something? Wake up!

The guy is being treated as if he were the president elect. How about his elected job as senator from the state of Illinois? How has he been at performing that duty? He is on record as the most liberal member of the Senate and is now taking moderate positions for the sake of sound bites. What a sham! He knows when the cameras are rolling and the mikes are on.

RICHARD, why do you libs always forget about Jimmy Carter? Now he truly IS the WORST President, EVER! Hem undermined our allie, the Shah of Iran, bringing about the rabid Islam-a-nut situation in todays world. If it hadn't been for Jimmy's total incompetance we would not be talking about either of the Gulf Wars. You might want to read some un-rewritten history books. Ronald Reagan, through unwavering principles, brought down the iron curtain, freeing millions of enslaved people. For this one act alone, Pres. Ronald Reagan will always be considered one of the GREATEST Presidents the WORLD will ever know. (Freeing those enslaved people in communist countries still ###### off you libs, doesn't it?)

I believe Obama. Period.

THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD--MUST---LEAD THE FREE WORLD, by building bridges of understanding. When American leadership is beloved and respected it makes it more poltically feasible for politcal and business leaders in other countries to work constructively with Americans and that helps create jobs and opportunities here at home. The fact that McCain is perceived similarly as Bush makes it unlikely that a McCain Administration can accomplish as much as OBAMA Administration and push through a Pro-American agenda. This simple logic needs to be sold in the heartland of the United States rather than allowing McCain to paint Obama as being more in touch with European Elitistsits and being out of touch with real Americans. Republicans use this false rhetoric as a way to manipulate and deceive Americans in to voting against their self interest. America cannot afford to elect a leader like John McCain who is so completely out of touch with the World and Americas standing in the world. McCain poses a dangerous risk for America. Having an American Leader who can LEAD the World is good for America and that is something that is so contrary to the NEOCON way of thinking of Bush/Cheney/McCain which has alienated the world to Americans and American interests. What is wrong with having a President with a High IQ who is intelligent and respected vs. a buffoon who graduated 4th from the bottom of his class of over 900 at the Naval Academy, who crashed more military aircraft than any cadet, was known for spending more time behind a bar stool than studying flight plans which may have made him a proficient Naval Aviator. Instead the unprepared drunken idiot was shot down over Vietnam. If this makes McCain a "Maverick", it is certainly not the type of "Maverick" that this country needs. What do we call him "Bottom Gun" cause he sure as hell ain't no "Top Gun"

Now that's something Bush could've used a little more of -- thinking time!

Oh, wait, Bush doesn't think.

Posted by: Jenny | Jul 27, 2008 11:29:18 AM

You Drudge Readers don't get it:

The corporate-owned media, because of corporate welfare, low taxes, etc., wants McCain to win the presidency. Don't you think it's funny how much the main networks cut him so much slack"

The prescient 1970s movie "NETWORK" had it right: Beware when corporations own the mouthpiece.

If Obama wins, all you haters are going to have to SUCK IT UP like we Bush-haters had to do for the last 8 years!

I'm in my 40s and, in my mind, Bush was the worst president in my lifetime (2nd only to Reagan.)
