More Humble Obama Berlin Speech Location Chosen: The Victory Column

July 20, 2008 8:54 AM

What a long, strange trip it's been to Siegessäule at the Großer Stern in Tiergarten Park, where on Thursday, July 24, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will deliver what his campaign is billing a "major speech on the historic U.S.-German partnership, and the need to strengthen transatlantic relations to meet 21st century challenges."

As you may recall, originally Obama's campaign had explored the notion of its candidate speaking at the Brandenburg Gate, site of President Ronald Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel made it clear to Obama she didn't cotton to the idea.

This was followed by allegations the Bush White House was involved in Merkel's "nein"-ing, denials of said allegations, and then one of Obama's foreign policy aides said that the candidate himself thought Brandenburg was a "presumptuous" location.

So where will Herr Obama be speaking?

Der Siegessäule is the "Victory Column" erected to celebrate the Prussian victory over the Danes in their 1864 war. Before the column could be completed, the Prussians had knocked off two other victories, in wars against Austria in 1866 and France in 1970-1871. The 35-ton figure atop the column is the Goddess of Victory. The base of the column is festooned with bas-reliefs of battles.

The column used to be located elsewhere in Berlin -- in front of the Reichstag -- but it was moved to the intersection of Großer Stern (Great Star) by the Nazis.

In Wim Wenders' film Wings of Desire the column is where angels meet.

Why Obama is so popular in Germany ?

A Berlin newspaper described it best when it wrote that : Obama is widely seen as being the "Anti-Bush"

History lesson (please check it out!): After 9/11 we had the whole world on our side, until the arrogance of the Republicans made it clear that we didn't need the rest of the world. They assembled a rag-tag "coalition" to prove that the UN was unnecessary, until they realized they had created a quagmire that diverted attention from Bin Laden and let him escape--but we could not.

Then they went to the countries they had snubbed, hat in hand, begging for help to set up a police force in Iraq. But they simultaneously declared that VERY profitable rebuilding contracts (OUR money!) would NOT be shared with the countries they were begging from.

Yes, SOMEONE has to apologize and start building relationships again. We are rapidly selling America to pay for our ineffective, goalless wars and our addiction to oil. You stop being arrogant pretty fsst when you are bankrupt. It might be good to prepare for losing our "superpower" status before it actually happens.

This Republican America of hate and religious politics is NOT the country I swore to defend when I volunteered to join the Army 50 years ago. And I will support ANYONE who truly understands what America really means and will help us heal from the incredible Bush era.

The US isn't big enough for his ego...Obama is now running for President of the World.

"Is Obama running for President in Germany now, because
That isn't very logical, Mr. Spock.

Only 4% of the German people are Islamic.

There must be some other reason he's so popular there.

Maybe they think he'd be a great President.

Many seem to be worried about the democrats raising taxes after the November election. Well, yeah, that's bound to happen, at least on household incomes above the upper middle-class level. Somebody's gotta start making the books balance and paying down the national debt. It's either that or else the government can default after we’re no longer able to service the interest paid on government bonds and treasuries. Oh yeah… can could do away with all government services to include the FDS, the FCC, the FAA, the State Department, the FHA, etc., etc., and slash all retirement benefits and annuities. That's how McCain plans to balance the budget.

I see no real upside to this next election. I see some with fawning praise for Obama which is distressing to anyone who has a rudimentary grasp of history. I have read how even the military is cheering him on in droves. The only video I saw was a handful and the vast majority were black. No matter the pole Obama gets over 90% of the black vote that is mind numbing. I am not going to compromise my principles one more time by holding my nose and voting for McCain but will never vote for anyone like Obama he will destroy our country but john is not much better.

John has completely abandoned conservatives to pursue the far radical left votes. It is next to impossible to defend McCain he has left us out in the cold. Today being a conservative is just like being Sisyphus. We toil for years to bring conservative thinking to the top of the hill only to watch liberal republicans undermine our plans and send us back to the bottom. According to legend Sisyphus never tired or was disillusioned even though he was condemned for all eternity to never achieve his quest. We should take heed of his example and not lose sight of the top of our hill.

I see many millions of conservative minded people in this country but we are a mob with no leader. To date none have come forward to carry our banner to the top of our hill and plant our seed. Before history can be written it must be made. Before conservatism can take root we must first till the soil and trim the tree. Our main problem seems to be root rot and branches that bear no fruit. This big tent idea is not working we have to leave some out in the rain until they wish to join us as conservatives or they will salt the soil and we will wither once again.

"...it really does come down to that - refusing to vote for a Black man but not having the courage to say so."

Some may be voting against his black half. Some may be voting against his white half. He's an equal opportunity candidate for that sort of voter.

Given his lack of experience and his naive solutions to complex problems that have to be 'refined' every couple of hours I'm hoping not to think too much about him after November.

This should be the DEM year but the polls arent showing a huge gap in the race. The normal working class people dont sit on blogs all day, or go online to do polls, so you have to really wonder what will happen come november. Neither candidate will win by a landslide, but i really do think McCain is going to do it with all republicans and most independents who just dont trust Obama

Is Obama running for President in Germany now, because he knows he is going to lose here?

Why do the Islamics support him so much?

any answers?

Anon said, "Would anybody show up for a
McCain speech whether it's
in front of a column, gate
or wall in Germany?"

I don't think anyone's denying that Obama's a good orator.

They used to say Abraham Lincoln wasn't a good orator. His speeches tended to be short and to the point, and his voice had a nasal quality to it that was unflattering. The same was said of Hillary Clinton and her voice.

And yet, a famous orator in Lincoln's day, Edward Everett, said this of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, "I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes."

It's clear that being a good orator is a good quality to have as President, but does not exclude others, such as Lincoln, from achieving a contributive and meaningful Presidency.

Meneither...you should LISTEN to what Obama says rather than GUSHING over his body...anyone who has paid attention to his plans will not vote for him! We are not GROUPIES or CULTIST, we are realistic and will vote for the more logic candidate...Hillary would have been the best candidate, but since she is not, we have no choice but to vote for the most qualified irrespective of his party affiliation...country first, party never!!

Erb...all economist have spoken...and their words are that Obama's economic plan is extremely flawed and will created economic crisis for the poor and the middle income, but especially the middle income..especially with capital gains taxes! Obama does not have a clue how to run this country...if he did he would not be flip flopping all over every issue as he does!!! This is exactly why the majority of Hillary supporters will vote for McCain...Hillary said it best when she said he was unqualified...the only reason she is kissing his butt if for money and her career!

"The important thing to note is that
OBAMA IS THE CHAIRMAN OF THAT COMMITTEE!"

The only problem is that he has never held a meeting of this committee.

Obama’s brush off the shoulders, condescending “sweetie”, silent approval of Senator Hillary Clinton being bashed by sexist media, on and on….As a Hillary Supporter,I’m OVER the Democratic Party. McCain gets my vote. I refuse to allow the sneaky low life Dean, DNC and the filthy no good talk show hosts media to choose my president.

No Bama. Never. Just Say No Deal. PUMA

Election: Grousing about Obama "eking" out. I personally am so very concerned that the HC supporters are reacting childishly by either voting for McCain or not voting at all which is CUTTING OFF THEIR NOSES AND SPITING THEIR FACES. I was an HC supporter BUT I HAVE THE SENSE not to get in snit. HC is a Dem thus what is the reasoning other than PO'd because they didn't get their way. We cannnot take another for years of Bush's crazy leadership. McCain is counting on discontents. Do you as former and present HC supporters want to be part of the cause McCain/Repubs keep the Presidency. I hope not.

"The troops in Iraq dont love Obama they have to put on a show. The Commanders would see to that I have been to Iraq and I know this is a fact."

Why would they do that ?

I thought Bush was their Commander in Chief.

Obama is light years way younger, smarter, and stronger than that other tired old guy. Looks better, talks better, writes better, thinks better.
Did you see him sink that three?
The Tiergarten Park will be crawling with screaming fans.
The guy's a Rock Star and I can't wait to vote for him again!

"Obama has already tried to raise everyone taxes making over 32,000 a year." Posted by: chattyway
----------------------------
That is a misunderstanding.

That's taxable income.

The resolution Obama voted for would not have increased taxes on any single taxpayer making less than $41,500 per year in total income, or any couple making less than $83,000. The $32,000 figure is approximately the taxable income of a single person making $41,500 per year, after all deductions and exclusions.
