More Humble Obama Berlin Speech Location Chosen: The Victory Column

July 20, 2008 8:54 AM

What a long, strange trip it's been to Siegessäule at the Großer Stern in Tiergarten Park, where on Thursday, July 24, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will deliver what his campaign is billing a "major speech on the historic U.S.-German partnership, and the need to strengthen transatlantic relations to meet 21st century challenges."

As you may recall, originally Obama's campaign had explored the notion of its candidate speaking at the Brandenburg Gate, site of President Ronald Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel made it clear to Obama she didn't cotton to the idea.

This was followed by allegations the Bush White House was involved in Merkel's "nein"-ing, denials of said allegations, and then one of Obama's foreign policy aides said that the candidate himself thought Brandenburg was a "presumptuous" location.

So where will Herr Obama be speaking?

Der Siegessäule is the "Victory Column" erected to celebrate the Prussian victory over the Danes in their 1864 war. Before the column could be completed, the Prussians had knocked off two other victories, in wars against Austria in 1866 and France in 1970-1871. The 35-ton figure atop the column is the Goddess of Victory. The base of the column is festooned with bas-reliefs of battles.

The column used to be located elsewhere in Berlin -- in front of the Reichstag -- but it was moved to the intersection of Großer Stern (Great Star) by the Nazis.

In Wim Wenders' film Wings of Desire the column is where angels meet.

The troops in Iraq dont love Obama they have to put on a show. The Commanders would see to that I have been to Iraq and I know this is a fact.

Lets Face It, Bush-Cheney and Their confused step child McCain are living in the greedy past. Obama has demonstrated the courage and intelect to say what America has been feeling for the past eight years. DOES ANONE REALLY REALIZE HOW BUSH AND COMPANY INCLUDING MCCANE SREWED OUR COUNTRY'S ECONOMY AND WORLD WIDE REPUTATION UP?
How long do you think it will take to recover from the world opinion that Americans are self centered and arrogant based on the example of it's leaders. Iraq has always benn about oil. May both Bush and Cheney live long enough to live with their horible legacy.I pray that Obama and his team can get America on the road to recovery form the damages of the Bush-Cheney and McCane's operatives.

'Obama chairs the European Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which has oversight of military operations in Afghanistan."

The important thing to note is that
OBAMA IS THE CHAIRMAN OF THAT COMMITTEE!

doublestandard - ABC News, 'McCain Has Worse Afghanistan Hearing Record Than Obama': Byron Wolf reports from Capitol Hill ... Sen. John McCain has attended even fewer Afghanistan-related Senate hearings over the past two years than Obama's one. Which is a nice way of saying, McCain, R-Ariz., the top Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee, has attended zero of his committee's six hearings on Afghanistan over the last two years. ... Obama attended the full Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Afghanistan in March 2007, although he used the opportunity to ask Gen. James L. Jones, then the commander of NATO, about Pakistan. Jones also came before the Senate Armed Services Committee that week. But McCain was a no-show.'

EYES WIDE OPEN - Sorry, I think you eyes need glasses. I do not pay attention to you naysayers ... ... you are all in just in shock over the idea that our presumptive POTUS isn't making an ass of himself on his travels - something too many people have gotten so used to over the last eight years, they've come to believe it's the way things are meant to be done. "Oh, my God! Senator Obama is speaking in coherent sentences, and is actually SAYING something worth listening to! Whatever can this MEAN?!?" Seems to me, McCain's challenge is actually making Obama the candidate of choice. McCain overplayed his hand - now he is paying the price. And Senator Obama is schooling McCain and Bush on foreign policy. Look at the 180 degree turn Bush and McCain have taken over the past few days. Senator Obama the leader, Bush and McCain the followers.

golly gee Paul -- so kindly tell us WHAT foreign policy decision Obama has had to make? HMMMM....awfully quiet in here. By the way, Obama made no decision about going to Iraq, as he was not in a position to vote on it, nor did he have the confidential intelligence to make the decision.

Obama DID have the chance to make a decision with Nato and afghanistan, but, you see, he was too busy running for president to hold any substantial hearin gon the committee he chaired. Complete failure in his role.

freeus - Sorry - false argument - not only does Senator Obama admit when he blows it - so do his supporters. There have been planty of us on his neck for some of his stances but we will not always agree with him and Senator Obama is aware of that. He is man enough to admit that. Then there is the confused candiate - McCain:

* McCain continues to believe Czechoslovakia is still a country.

* McCain has been confused about the difference between Sudan and Somalia.

* McCain has been confused about how many U.S. troops are in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about whether the U.S. can maintain a long-term presence in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about the source of violence in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about Iran’s relationship with al Qaeda.

* McCain has been confused about the difference between Sunni and Shi’ia.

* McCain has been confused about Gen. Petraeus’ responsibilities in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about what transpired during the Maliki government’s recent offensive in Basra.

Then, of course, McCain's 75 flip-flops.Yep! Some default candidate you have there.

Do you Left wingers only allow YOUR opinions to be posted here or what?

You guys seem to be so emotional or always want to come back with the personal attacks when it comes to debating the qualities of Obama versus McCain. Most of us responding here appear to be Conservatives and we do NOT get memos from the McCain campaign. LOL! Now that is a riot! It just so happens that we live in the U.S. and here we have a right to voice our opinions despite the fact most of the MSMLSDs are trying so hard to squelch them.

Amazing that so many of you seem so sure Obama has won this race and there is a little over 3 months left in the campaign. What, you want us to roll over and die? This is as most people have suggested in the political arena; not a vote for McCain so much as it is a vote against Obama and mostly Obama's ideology. As a man he seems to be somewhat affable, but as a politician not so desirable to us versus McCain. There is something to be said for judgement and knowing your history or at least placing a value on it. Both of these Obama seems to fall short on and the choice of this location should have been known about by the 300 foreign policy advisors he has on staff. Obama should have looked it up himself just to make sure things were handled correctly once he knew how ill received the Brandenberg Gate was. Not to mention the fact that in Europe there is a monument on every street corner. They all mean something and have some significant meaning from past history of either the nation they are in or the conquerors passing through. This is particularly true in Rome.

What I cannot understand is the constant stance taken by the Obama followers that the man never makes a mistake. We freely admit our candidate is flawed and we have made no bones about our wishing we had a different candidate, but the Obamanites are vastly different in their views of Obama. It is if the man can do no wrong, has never done anything wrong and will never do anything wrong. We are all human beings people and the man is not perfect. You all do not help his cause by coming off very much like Ron Paul's groupies.

Concerned AMerican - thank you! GREAT post. And, it really does come down to that - refusing to vote for a Black man but not having the courage to say so.

Obama has already tried to pass a special tax on America to give the corrupt UN $787 Billion.

Posted by: chattyway | Jul 20, 2008 11:22:31 PM

Obama has already tried to raise everyone taxes making over 32,000 a year.

Posted by: chattyway | Jul 20, 2008 11:21:50 PM

Give it a rest already! Senator Obama is NOT going to raise your taxes. Scare tactics will not work this year; swiftboarding will not work this year. Old politics will not work this year - this election year is the year of a new beginning in politics. Senator Obama is that new beginning.

L'europe pour Obama, if USA doesn't elect him a president we will elect try hard to elect him the president of Europe

Posted by: Steve Klein | Jul 20, 2008 10:24:56 PM

I just watched the video of Obama with the troops in Kuwait... They love the guy! You good just see the respect and the admiration they have for him in their body language and actions. It makes me proud.

With all eyes on Barack Obama's global tour, John McCain had a message Friday for Katie, Brian, Charlie and other traveling TV anchors - don't forget about me.

Aides to the Republican presidential hopeful formally asked the networks to provide equal time to his campaign, which will focus on U.S. jobs and the economy next week as Obama tours the Middle East and Europe.

"We don't pretend to believe that this isn't interesting and captivating," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said of Obama's trip. "But we expect the integrity of the organizations will allow us equal time."

Equal time? I did not see Senator Obama DEMANDING "equal time" when McCain was on his last jaunt to South America. What a joke the McCain camp is!

It is appropriate Obama picked the "Victory Column" The last leader that preached the same message paraded up Unter den Linden and through the Gate in January 1933, announcing the arrival of a “new Germany” to the world. They should love him in Germany. As for we Conservatives we will be portrayed to all Europe as Medusa. Which is appropriate according to the story in Greek mythology (yes to all historians I know there are others) Medusa was a women who's beauty was beyond all earthly measure. Her crowning glory was her hair flowing in ringlets around her shoulders forming a majestic crown worthy of a goddess. Her very name Medusa means "sovereign female wisdom". Men sought after her following Medusa’s every move in the hopes to make her his wife but before Medusa could wed she was worshiping in the temple of Athena and was ravaged by Neptune. Athena who was jealous of Medusa because of her beauty was so enraged by her temple being defiled in this way she turned her wrath on Medusa. Athena changed Medusa’s crown of flowing ringlets into snakes so that anyone that should look upon her would be turned to stone.

As the myth goes Perseus slayed Medusa by only looking at her reflection in his shield so that he could cut off her head. This is the part of the story most people know but when you look at it Medusa whose only crime was to be born the most beautiful of women Was the victim of a rape by a suture who was a God so she could not deny his advances nor did she knowingly tempt. For this she was cursed by the very God she went to worship. Athena could not attack Neptune who was the aggressor and at fault for defiling her temple so turned her rage on Medusa for the most human of all reasons, jealousy. Medusa was cursed to live a grim life of destitution and solitude on a barren island. Medusa was unable to befriend anyone without bringing the curse of Athena upon them until someone killed her for her head for crimes she did not commit. Medusa will always be remembered as a hideous creature of evil who died because of her wicked ways but this is simply not the true story. Let us hope the liberals do not cut off our conservative tresses to be displayed to future generations to be viewed as is Medusa.

Wow Obama and humble in the same sentence. Must be poetic license.

Posted by: noelle | Jul 20, 2008 9:56:02 PM

WOW! The right-wingers are out in force tonight. Did you all get an email from the McCain camp to go on the Internet and blow out your BS while Senator Obama is on his overseas trip? Will not work - jealousy is a horrible thing - too bad McCain does not get the audiences and support that Senator Obama receives. You would be all over this trip with accolades if it was McCain getting all of this attention. MCain is a dead horse in this election -he is the default candidate for a party who knew they were outclassed in this election year. Outclassed in a presidential candiate - outclassed for seats in the Senate and House. Gramm was right about whiners - just pointed his finger at the wrong group - they whiners are the right wingers who can only wish they had a candidate who has as much appeal to the masses as Senator Obama does.
