Obama Escapes (Not Makes) Iraqi Headlines

July 22, 2008 5:32 PM

ABC NEWS' NATALIE GEWARGIS REPORTS:

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, can’t seem to make any stops along his whirlwind tour without a press parade following him.

But if you’ve only read Iraq's papers Tuesday morning, you wouldn’t even know the presumptive nominee was there.

With the exception of one paper, Asharq Al-Awsat, a widely read Saudi publication, most local and regional papers seemed decidedly under-whelmed by the candidate’s visit.

Local issues dominated the headlines, including news of increasing typhoid outbreaks, a full Iraqi cabinet meeting (for the first time in about a year), and a story about the frequency of Iraqi visits to a local Baghdad park, among others.

On Tuesday, the newspaper Al Mashriq continued to report on the death of Husam al-Shakti, the son of Hamid Hummud al-Shakti, the governor of Iraq's Salaheddin province. Al-Shakti’s son was shot by Coalition Forces Sunday during a raid on the family’s home in the town of Beiji.

In addition to security developments, most Iraqi papers track the activities of Iraq’s Council of Ministers and the Iraqi parliament on a daily basis. Other issues that elicit frequent coverage include the occurrence of power blackouts and a daunting fuel crisis, and water shortage.

Given all that’s occurring (and making the news) in Iraq, it seems that the majority of Iraqis think that the junior senator from Illinois is just a senator from Illinois.

And while Obama's camp may sometime seem a little too ready for their "Mission Accomplished" moment, Iraqis seem less apt to jump the gun.

Obama really knows how to play a game.

I bet Petraeus wished he was a civilian too because then he could be honest with Obama and not worry about being the good soldier like Powell was...

and most of the other generals that have left and now say they were spouting the Bush/Mccain doctrine.

The junior senator from Illinois (and in name only, I might add, as he has done absolutely nothing to benefit his constituents) is getting way too big for his britches. I hope the Israelis take him down a notch or ten.

Bet a million bucks that Gen Petraeus wished that he was a civilian for few minutes when first meeting with Obama.

Er..this may be news but they don't really want us there to begin with. And the little 'mission accomplished' quip at the end of the article seems a smidge silly. Considering Bush made the statement years ago.

Fae said, "No one even knows where Obama was born. Now they say it was Canada."

Geez, another low-level voter.

Barack was born in Hawaii.

So, the Hussein Obama plan is to move the occupation force to Afghanistan to step up the occupation of their country and killing of their people.

The French failed and left Vietnam, so the United States took their place.

The former Soviet Union failed and left Afghanistan, so now the United States will take their place...according to the Obama assessment.

Afghans will not cry "liberator" any more than the Iraqis have.

Since he is running for US President, and not for office in Iraq, this should not be surprising.

We are, after all, occupying their country and killing their people.

seems like this doesn't scream "liberators" and a more secure place in the middle east for us.

like i said it screams "occupiers" and "get out of our country because no matter what we are going to decide our fate...not you."

doesn't it?

I don't know what we should take away from this article...

that we seem like occupiers so they care less about our politics?

I am not sure but that is what I take away from it.
