Obama has Republicans Jumping Through Loopholes

July 03, 2008 7:09 PM

ABC NEWS' NATALIE GEWARGIS WRITES

Not keeping in the spirit of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act  he worked so hard to create, allies of Sen. John McCain R-Ariz., have started to mine (loop) holes in the text of his  own legislation.

Friday, the Wall Street Journal’s lead story, “McCain Allies Find Finance-Law Holes: Governors’ Fund Recruits Big Donors Bid to Catch Obama,” by Brody Mullins and T.W. Farnam, lays out how allies of the senator, unaffiliated with the campaign, are working to compete with with Sen. Barack Obama D-Ill, while ignoring the position that McCain has taken on campaign finance in years past.

A Republican Party fund charged with electing governors has started positioning itself as a base for contributions regardless of size. This is only one of the endeavors designed to assist the senator. A second strategy enacted by the McCain campaign, as reported by the Wall Street Journals’ Elizabeth Holmes in April, establishes a joint fund-raising account that pools the legal maximum gifts for the candidate in addition to the national party, and state parties with contests crucial to the outcome of the race.

While Obama's flip-flop on saying, then recanting, that he's aggressively pursuing an agreement with McCain on accepting public financing may be glaring, it can be argued that Obama's switch shouldn’t give McCain a free pass. His supporters may be staying true to the language of his legislation, but they’re not being true to its intent.

WestCoast Messenger, I will vote for Sen. McCain because he best fits my ideology. It is not a perfect match. But Sen. Obama is ideologically so far to the left that he is Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis all rolled up into one. But the American electorate has shifted left of center as well. Carter, Mondale and Dukakis in their respective general elections, 1980, 1984 and 1988, received a COMBINED TOTAL of 173 electoral votes out of a possible 1,614 electoral votes (NOTE: It takes 270 electoral votes to win the general election). RealClear Politics' latest estimates show Sen. Obama leading in states that would give him 238 electoral votes, as compared to 163 electoral votes for Sen. McCain (with 137 electoral votes a toss up). What a difference compared to the 1980s.

...Eileen from Maine:

The books he wrote are semi-autobiographical "hype" ... filled with well parsed but quite creative writing...

Until his last year in the state senate, B O accomplished very little.. until Illinois Kingmaker, Emil Jones, decided to make himsself a REAL senator.

He plied Obama with tons of legislation already worked over by other legislators to pass as his own... and provided a kick up the political ladder.

Even then, in order to win, Obama had to kick out a couple of rungs on the ladder to tumble his competition out of the way!

Technically, he is NOT a professor. His students call him that just as most university students address THEIR teachers!

However, I agree; the campaign run was
excellent!

Perhaps we should nominate Axelrod for
President!

'So the Obama campaign scheduled a second news conference to try to clarify his remarks. “We’re going to try this again,” Mr. Obama said. “Apparently, I wasn’t clear enough this morning on my position with respect to the war in Iraq,
NY Times, july 4,2008"

Talk abouta flip=flopping Newbie Flopper.... who apparently is unable to make anyone understand what he says.... at any moment of any day!

Stay tuned for addendums... or omissions.. or other clarifications!!

No Obama!

YOU ALREADY GOT RID OF THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR THE JOB!

think!!!!

MCCAIN BEFORE B O!

COUNTRY BEFORE broken down dnc PARTY!!!

Who Obama picks as his VP is nowhere near as important as who McCain picks. McCain is so old, there is a very real possibility his VP will become president.

HP Boston,

Please let me what you most find appealing about John McCain's Health Care Policy.

Lay off McCain's War Record. We have already said We honor his service to our country. Having said that I'm a Obama fan. Stick to the issues. Next week is going to be a real fight about the economy.

Go Barack Obama!

James Danley,
If you want to vote for a Bush third term and bring a guy into office that is a political greenhorn, whose policies are now appearing closest to Bush, then George W. Obama is your man. Too bad you can't trust Obama. It's time for Americans to take action and get the right candidate into office.

In order to show their lack of bias, the media must find issues with both camps, in roughly equal proportion. If necessary, they spin non-issues, in order create the desired effect. This story is one example. MSNBC, CNN and FOX are exceptions to the rule. They make no effort to hide their bias. In a sense, they are the more honest of the MSM outlets.

Yes it is!
I am sure BO will self destruct, he strikes me as lazy and has not done his homework.
He seems dependent on others and is led around by his nose.
His constant shifts and stutters are always preceded or flowed by his sputtering!

I checking out everyone. My Fourth of July is starting. Hurray! This blogg is like a Ali/Frazier fight going into the last rounds.

Blogger on both sides are still in the ring pounding away.

I love the image of Hillary throwing a left jab at the Rove attack machine and doing the Ali shuffle and with her next Punch saying like Ali "What My Name? this is for Obama, all Democrats and Our Troops"

Sorry Raven Girl Rocks I just wanted to add our Troops. Happy 4th everyone I'm off to our family barbecue.

I'm sure Hillary and Bill have a sense of humor about all this.

Obama's reversal on public financing is glaring because of the media attention it drew, while McCain's inconsistencies are minimized. For instance, he's under bipartisan investigation for securing a 5 million loan from public financing during the nomination, then backing out. The loan used taxpayers' money as collateral on a private loan. When things picked up with the McCain campaign and public financing wasn't needed, he withdrew. The Obama campaign could counterattack on this along with other McCain inconsistencies, but instead are taking the higher road.

ANGIE, I am proud to have cast my vote TWICE for George W. Bush. President Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts lowered the bottom two federal income tax rates (the 15% tax bracket was lowered to 10%; and the 28% tax bracket was lowered to 15%) and raised the child tax credit. The Democrats want to allow those tax cuts to expire. That will be a massive tax increase for the lower and middle class.

I am NOT clueless. It is my strong belief that the only way we will defeat the Islamic terrorists is through a three-step process which will require patience and sacrifice. (1) The spreading of democracy throughout the Middle East. President Bush envisions a day where Iraq and Afghanistan are thriving democracies with vibrant economies and becoming role models for their neighbors. (2) Solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by implementing the two-state solution. The Bush Administration is tirelessly working towards this solution. (3) Encouraging the Islamic world to end their hate-filled, anti-Western Civilization curricula throughout their education systems.

There is no question that Sen. Obama is very popular. He is an incredible speaker. His charisma and charm are wonderful assests. But his ideology is very socialistic. Sen. Obama believes in wealth redistribution (stealing from the wealthy in order to provide "free" entitlements to the middle class). His anti-Corporate America and small business policies (i.e., massive tax hikes and regulations) will decimate the free market. And he wants the government to be the end-all answer to all of our problems. Universal health care may sound great, but in reality it is a disaster worldwide.

Hillary and Bill are at a cross roads right now. Do they what to remembered for the 3:AM ad? For SC? For giving the Republican Attack machine the talking points being used right now. There will came a time when courting you both will end. We all have to move on. Until then we are going to fight for you both, for your legacy and honor which we are determined to save.

Obama isn't moving to the center for the general election...he's like a completely different candidate! Again, fascinating that the media is not calling him on this, but instead focus on McCain's response to Obama's flip-flops and reversals.
