Obama Hitches a Royal Ride

July 22, 2008 3:09 PM

After attending a banquet at King Abdullah's Beit Al Urdan palace Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, hitched a ride -lliterally - to the Amman airport with the King.

Abdullah drove himself - with Obama riding shotgun - from the palace to the airport in a silver Mercedes 600 series with blacked out windows.

The King - in the driver's seat - raced onto the tarmac and came to an abrupt halt, stopping on a dinar, just a few feet away from one of Senator Obama's pre-positioned secret service agents.

The King's car was followed by a squadron of myriad Mercedes filled with the King's security forces.

The Senator and the King got out of the car, spoke on the tarmac for a few minutes and then shook hands. Obama then boarded his plane, without the King, to fly to Tel Aviv.

Their joint ride to the airport follows their closed door meeting this evening and a dinner reception at the palace.

His Royal Majesty issued a statement announcing that "His Majesty King Abdullah II stressed during talks this evening with US Senator Barack Obama (Democrat, Illinois) that ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and achieving a just settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict tops the priorities of the people of the Middle East. During the meeting, King Abdullah reasserted the need to establish an independent Palestinian state on all Palestinian land in the West Bank and Gaza, saying it is the key to a final settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict."

While the Kingdom is staying neutral, one senses they have been taken by the senator's message of change. Presumably they believe that will extend to how much of a priority the next president will make the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The King also said that he "told Obama that continued American support for a Middle East peace process that leads to a just and comprehensive peace would help foster Arab-US relations and bolster US credibility in the region" and that he "outlined Jordan’s position in support of the rights of the Palestinian people to liberation and independence through the establishment of an independent state that preserves the Palestinian identity. He also emphasized Jordan’s support for the Palestinians in negotiations with Israel on final status issues."

Abdullah said he "warned that the Israeli settlement policy and Israel’s imposition of new realities on the ground, along with the siege on the Palestinian people would exacerbate conflict and undermine peace efforts."

Obama is leaving Jordan in minutes and heading to Israel.

CAIN has too many senior moments. He is too old and too stress.

We cannot afford an old man with memory laps and mental confusion to be in the Global Office.

We need someone young, strong, intelligent and strategic like Obama.

Republicans would love to have a presidential candidate like Obama.

One good thing about an Obama administration is that Israel will get the implied message that they'd better chill the heck out for about 4 years. They aren't going to wanna test how far we will or won't go to help them in some of their more illegally inhuman activities. Sadly, these days they know they can rely on Republicans for just about anything... even human rights violations.

So at least we'll see Israel back on their heels a bit, and that won't go just a small way towards getting things a bit calmer in the mideast.

Hopefully, we can knock out some major concessions from them that will take us a lot farther forward towards peace with the Palestinians.

Bush went nowhere. 8 years... nothing. A lot of people die in 8 wasted years.

I'll never forget how when Reagan came into office, the dictators in Haiti started slaughtering their people... because they knew they'd then be able to get away with it. They knew the Republican brand of conservative doesn't care about human rights violations, so long as the country in question is putting down labor revolts or silencing social progressives... for good.

A lot of things change with the different parties in power... things we never even really recognize or think about... all over the world.

Idiots like Sherk never learn. The Isrealis aren't stupid; they're sitting at the table with Syria and the Palestinians negotiating. Their prime ministers always begin like Sherk with some up in the you know what logic, but eventually every one of them ends up doing a U-turn and recognizing that the only way to find peace in the Middle East is to give the Palestinians what is theirs. Rabin did a U-turn from hawk to peace advocate, and died a martyr for peace, killed by extremist morons who reason like Sherk. The Butcher of Shatila, Ariel Sharon, who came to power the last time by inciting violence in Jerusalem, finally did a U-turn and began to concede land for peace before he was cut down by illness. And now the emabattled Ehud Olmert who, again, went for the longest time reasoning like Sherk and waged the failed fools war against Hizbollah, has now done a U-turn and is negotiating peace. It's funny that we all turn out for fireworks on July 4th, enjoying the freedom that the revolutionary founding fathers brought us by waging war against Britain, yet we cannot see that the principle is and always will be the same: you cannot know peace until you grant a people their freedom of self-determination. It doesn't matter who you are or where you are. Ben Gurion and the leaders of the Israeli underground rebellion against Britain were once referred to as terrorists. Ransomes were posted on their heads and some of them were condemned to death in absentia as terrorists. They bombed hotels, set fire to British outposts, took hostages. But they were struggling for freedom and they eventually won. So will the Palestinians that today we refer to as militants and "terrorists". They won't give up till they've got what is rightfully theirs and anyone who thinks there can be peace before that is ignorant of history. We fought an 8 year war against Britain for ours, and we didn't give up till we got it. Hopefully the next President will bear that in mind.

This King Abdullah was in an episode of one of those new Start Trek spinoffs.

He's also a hog fanatic... Harley Davidson.

Y'all should do a google image search on the guy, he looks like a colorful character.

Sherk - you really do need to get you head out of your back end. That is all you've got? McCain is a war-monger - that is all HE's got. He says he can win a war. WHAT war did McCain ever win? Troops mobbed Senator Obama while he was in Bagdad. Of course troops are mobbing him. They want to find SOMEONE with a clue how to get themm home. Gone were the jokes and "rah rah" language that won over many Obama partisans but left many undecided voters wondering whether there was any there when it came to the Illinois senator. Instead, we saw a serious explication of Obama's position on removing combat troops in Iraq, a position bolstered in recent days by repeated calls by the Iraqi government to remove U.S. military forces from the country by 2010.
This is a great moment for America. Finally, the world knows America is not only made of inarticulate neocon militants and warmongers like McCain. Senator Obama was calm, measured and dignified. Not a hot-head like your pal John.

Past performance can be a good indicator of future performance. To date, Obama has done little except to raise taxes to pay for failed projects in his communities - example his pal Rezko. Now as Obama moves to the middle, he has become a chameleon for president - he will say anything, do anything - this alone would be a good reason for Dems to consider McCain in 2008. But wait - there's more - Obama is co-sponsoring a bill that will give money to the UN to have an UN military and for the UN to give the US taxpayer payments to countries which have a low minimum wage. In other words, not only will your jobs go overseas, but your taxes will start to go overseas too.

Members of the military are trained for war, not peace. That is McCain's mindset. He can win a war. Is that how he sees the presidency? It appears so. That is why he laughs at Obama for seeking peaceful solutions.

And do not forget McCain's plans for the world! McCain’s plan now and always has been to stay in Iraq and “bomb, bomb” Iran. McCain wants to make Iran the DMZ between Iraq and Pakistan. With Iran out, Iraq will border Pakistan. You see...that way McCain’s geography would make sense! Let me see now, how else can McCain change the world map.....bomb, bomb?

For pete's sake give Senator Obama a chance. He has to be president before he can bring about any changes. Perhaps he made headway in Jordan and what he can do in Israel will be a start in the right direction when he does become president of this once-great country!

Posted by: sandy | Jul 22, 2008 10:29:05 PM

And tell us please what was Obama's response to King Abdullah's statement "that ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and achieving a just settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict tops the priorities of the people of the Middle East"? What is Obama's position? President Clinton negotiated what seemed a very favorable deal for the Palestinians and it was turned down. Actually it is Jordan is a country that should be stepping up to the task to assist the Palestinians who want to move out of camps. Jordan now occupies land that originally was to become Israel.

Did not cost him any votes - The Jewish people in this country are smarter than that - they know that their issues can best be handled by Senator Obama. Senator Obama is in Israel now - he will do just as well in that political upheaval as he has done on this trip so far.

Posted by: sandy | Jul 22, 2008 10:18:27 PM

I am sure that the people of Israel just LOVED seeing Sen. Barack Obama accept an invitation to "ride shotgun" in the King's Mercedes! I wonder how many Jewish votes that "cool ride" just lost Barack come November.

The John McCain groundswell continues... In Manchester last night, there was just one reporter and one photographer waiting for McCain as his plane -- a white, blue and gold Boeing 737-400 emblazoned with his campaign slogan, "Reform, Prosperity, Peace" -- touched down on the Wiggins Airways tarmac. The Vietnam War veteran limped as he made his way down the metal stairway, a leather briefcase in one hand and a cell phone in the other, and walked straight into an awaiting Chevy Suburban.

Meanwhile, Senator Obama is meeting with world leaders who, in turn, have rolled out the red carpet for him. The attention Senator Obama has received is unprecedented for a United States Senator. Foreign leaders recognize who is going to be the next president of our great country and it is not McCain.

Oh please people stop being sooooo over-the-top and paranoid. Ugh, talking about how something is not right about this trip, and Obama must've been plotting with the King, and something's fishy about him talking to all these Middle East folks. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!! McCain kept chiding him about going, and so he went and now some Republicans want to complain and come up with all this nonsense because he is apparently being met with respect and kindness, and with what looks like a "breath of fresh air" look on many of these officials' faces. He has excelled at McCain's challenge and come off looking quite presidential. Get over it. You don't think if he'd slipped up the media would be ALL OVER IT? Face it, Obama has the coolness and charisma of a compassionate intelligent leader and the world sees it. It needs to be covered because it is NEWSWORTHY. Or would you rather hear about some ape rape or wife beating jokes??

I have a school for boys only at this time it is small I only have five boys and our slogan is "obama!,Obama! we are the reason for your season."

Obama is just doing a dry run prior to being POTUS.

GOD BLESS OBAMA

POTUS OBAMA - ITS INEVITABLE

PCC - I agree completely! Foreign heads-of-state, especially kings, are generally not too eager to meet with senators - they prefer to meet with other heads-of-state. I wonder how he will be treated in Israel after appearing so friendly with King Abdullah.

TSnow27604, how are they going to get 100,000 ppl into a bolwling alley??

Posted by: :) | Jul 22, 2008 7:49:22 PM

Obama must have had somone talking to these people before he got over there....There is something very stange about how Obama has been treated since he's been there...I don't trust Obama on any issues and many American''s feel this way ....Obama has acted like he's already the President and it's looking very bad on him here in the united states Of America...Obama shouldn't be having talks with ANYONE about a time table he's not our President..

Posted by: PCC | Jul 22, 2008 7:37:52 PM

Obama is looking very Presidential while MCCain looks upset and frustrated. Obama riding with a King-cool--but more than that we can just feel change coming and it feels good. I know Bush and Cheney are mad as heck-a nominee able to receive a better welcome than the actual President and Vice President of the US. It is true you really do reap what you sew. Bush and Cheney probably can feel the egg on their faces.
