Obama More Than Doubles McCain's June $$ Haul; Pleads Huge Financial Disadvantage Using Wrong Numbers

July 17, 2008 7:50 AM

The Wall Street Journal's previous reporting that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, only raised just over $30 million in June is now inoperable.; this morning in an email to supporters Obama campaign manager David Plouffe announced that the campaign had raised a total of $52 million in June. The average donation, the campaign says, was $68.

Just over $2 million of Obama's $52 million is for the general, all the rest is for the primary, meaning it can be spent before the Democratic convention in August.

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, reported raising $22 million during that month.

But, Plouffe cautions supporters, the RNC is far outraising the DNC. "The Obama campaign and the DNC ended June with a combined total of nearly $72 million in the bank," Plouffe wrote. "It's a healthy number. But McCain and the RNC together still have a huge cash advantage, and we need your help to close the gap. ...The McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee finished June with nearly $100 million in the bank." (That number is actually $95 million.)

Shortly after sending out that mass email,* however, Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton emailed reporters to note an error: "The Obama campaign has $72 milllion cash on hand on its own, not combined. The DNC totals will be out shortly. "

Per ABC News' Political Director David Chalian, the DNC raised $22,481,194 in June and has $20,306,056 cash on hand. Meaning the Obama campaign and DNC have a combined total of nearly $92 million in the bank, not $72 million as previously claimed.

Meaning the "huge cash advantage" of McCain and the RNC that Plouffe referred to in his fundraising solicitation is not so huge after all.

In other money news, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is preparing to formally declare that he will not try to repay the $45 million he lent his own campaign, the Boston Globe reports. And McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina was dispatched to meet with some high-profile donors to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to try to convince them to come on board the Straight Talk Express, the WSJ reports.

We elitists have plenty of money to give to our most prized candidate.

That's why we're going to the WHITE HOUSE!

Can't stop it, can you?

Not trying to fool anyone. Some of the comments on this thread gave me reason to donate another $50 the Obama campaign I will keep on doing so.

Why doesn't Hillary give you back your money that she mismanaged?

All 30 million......

Err, could you send more to help her with the debt?

I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME RO.....errrr SQUEAL!

OBAMA 08

Posted by: Nat Turner | Jul 17, 2008 12:57:29 PM

why doesn't Obama give some of that money back..... possibly into a fund to HELP some of his followers who have been so supportive of him>

Or is he hell-bent to spend all those millions oiling the political wheels?

There should be a limit on the amount of money spent on campaigning...FOR EVERYONE especially in this economic climate in which many of us are struggling to survive.

Cindy,

History will be made just on 143 Days in the Senate. Who is he?

THEN HE WILL BE POTUS. Who is he?

Or.....Being in the Senate for 30 years and accomplishing nothing. Who is he?

Boring and predictable. Who is he?

Silly cynics, tricks are for kids.

POTUS OBAMA

Nat Turner---thanks for the info.

I will take that into consideration that I am too cynical.

I honestly have tried to like Obama-but something in my gut tells me he is not being honest.

Now time for some fresh air---good day to you all!

Nader, McCain, McKinney--all better qualified than Obama.

But Obama supporters can brag about Obama's 143 days in the Senate and his tough stance--voting "present" 129 times.

200 people in a room or 20,000 people in a stadium?

I say again, when these two people are finally in the same room on the same stage, take a good look and ask yourself: Which of these two people do you want talking to leaders from around the world on your behalf?

Any of the other republican candidates would have been a better choice than McCain. Republican, you blew it!!!!

All that money and Obama still can't get a decent lead in the polls.

Evidently some voters care more about a candidate's experience and integrity than his wallet.

I'm disapointed in the poor showing of the Obama's supporters. If we want to win we need 4 times as much money as McCain. Look at Pennsylvania; we spent 3 times as much money as Hillary and lost by over 10 points.

Cindy,

Did you know that DENIAL is the last known human survival mechanism before REALITY sets in?

Sweetie, it's not going to be pretty for you when the lights come on.

I feel for you, but you'll get over it.

OBAMA 08

Posted by: Nat Turner | Jul 17, 2008 12:19:04 PM

It's not going to matter how much money Obama has or how big his rallies get.

It makes him look more out of touch, elitist, and trying to buy the presidency.

Those of us who already don't trust him or see him as weak and unqualified are not impressed by these things.
Obama can't buy character, strength, and integrity.

McCain/Hillary

So, the three major networks are sending their news anchors overseas with obama. Mcain has had 3 trips overseas and only the correspondents were sent, cbs opted out alltogether. Hmmmm, fair and balanced?

That's because no one in the nations McCain visited cared. Obama will attract huge crowds there and that is news.

Posted by: Jane Hussein | Jul 17, 2008 12:10:12 PM

REALITY IS........

$52 million dollars in one month folks??!

Give it up - the OBAMA TRAIN is heading to the WHITE HOUSE!

The McCain camp is nothing more than rail roadkill on the way to the White House. CRUNCH!!!

ALL ABOARD!

Posted by: Nat Turner | Jul 17, 2008 12:08:10 PM

Michael,

Reality doesn't process well with cynics.

Whether you're pessimistically cynical or not, I have two approaches for you.

1 - OBAMA WILL BE POTUS.....It's going to take more than magazine covers, lapel pins, thesis papers, Rev's and White Priests to prevent it. McCain doesn't have a chance.

2 - McCain as POTUS - Donkeys are incapable or winning thoroughbred horse races.

Try reality Mike. Santa Claus isn't coming to town for you this election grasshoppa.

wonderful, laugh at what he says, and reading from a teleprompter. good qualities for the leader of the free world?

Posted by: michael | Jul 17, 2008 12:02:26 PM

Anyone that believe McCain has a snowball chance in Hell of winning in November is kidding him/herself. The minute there's a national audience where both these candidates are in the same place on the same stage it's game over. McCain won't have someone there to correct him when he makes a mistake.

When the question is asked, which of these two people would you prefer to represent this country on our behalf to the world? If you are honest with yourself, the answer should clearly be OBAMA!

We've suffered through 7 and a half years of incompetence in the white house. It will be refreshing to have someone there that can hold an intelligent conversation and not be laughed at every time he opens his mouth.

GO OBAMA, GO.
