Obama On Tonight's Berlin Speech: "A Crapshoot"

July 24, 2008 6:22 AM

How does one prepare to speak to a million screaming Germans?

I asked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, this question as he boarded O Force One and came back to the reporters' veal pen before the plane took off from Tel Aviv, Israel to Berlin, Germany.

This evening Obama will give a speech at the Victory Column at Tiergaten Park.

"I doubt we're gonna have a million screaming Germans," Obama said.

Half a million? asked another reporter.

"Let's tamp down expectations here," Obama said. "If we get a few tens of thousands..."

Obama said he "did not realize - my staff basically just told me that this space is bigger than I realized. So."

Asked a reporter: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

"Uh, it's a potentially bad thing if nobody shows up," Obama said, laughing. "You know, we're sort of on the high wire all of the sudden. It's like, 'I'm sorry, how many people does this accommodate? How many?'...We really have no idea what's going to happen. Sort of a crapshoot. I'm happy with the speech though."

A reporter noted that the campaign has been distributing fliers to Berliners to drum up attendance.

"Why don't you guys go out and distribute some fliers?" Obama asked. "Is that a conflict for you guys?"

Joked a cable news correspondent: "We have been. It's called television."

Obama said tonight's address will not be "a wonkish policy speech...We started working on it about two weeks ago, about two weeks ago." The speech "was in pretty good shape a couple days ago and now we're just kind of tooling around with it."

Obama's aides have been insisting this won't be a political rally and is not a political speech, though his campaiggn is paying for the trip (excluding the Iraq and Afghanistan legs) and events are clearly being staged with the intention of making voters back in the US comfortable with the notion of Obama as a commander-in-chief, an area where he needs shoring up.

And yet Obama and his team are also sensitive to being seen as presumptuous, of acting like a president before the people have their say this November.

Did he look to the Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy speeches about Berlin for guidance when writing his own? he was asked.

"You know, they were presidents," Obama said, " I am a citizen. But obviously Berlin is representative of the extraodinary success of the post World War II effort to bring the continent together and the West together and then later to bring the East and the West together so, so I think it's a natural place to talk about it."

Does he see the speech as a way to describe how he could improve that relationship as president?

"No," Obama said. "I'm just giving a speech."

In English, he noted.

"My German is not real good," he said. "I can speak Bahasi Indonesian but I don't think...there would be a lot of appeal to that."

Would you describe this as a campaign speech tonight? another reporter asked.

"As opposed to?" Obama replied.

You're in a campaign and you're giving a speech, replied the reporter. Would it be okay to describe it as a campaign speech?

"The people in the crowd aren't voters," Obama said, "so in that sense its not designed to get them to the polls. You know, its not a political rally. Hopefully it will be viewed as a substantive articulation of the relationship I'd like to see beteen the US and Europe."

Audiences back in the US will be watching as well, though, right? he was asked.

"I'm hoping to communicate across the Atlantic about the relationship and how we can build on it," he said.

He added that "there's no doubt that part of what I want to communicate on both sides of the Atlantic is the enormous potential of us for restoring a strong sense of coming together."

Obama said he was not surprised by the international reaction to his world tour.

"What I think I anticipated was that the world is keely interested in this election," he said. "And I think they are hungry for a sense of where America is going so certainly there is a curiosity there as well."

Obama noted that in a break from his whirlwind schedule, "we've got some down time tonight. What are you guys gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? ...I've never been to Berlin, so...I would love to tour around a little bit."

Why would Obama be campaigning in Europe? When was the last time that a European leader felt the need to win over a non-electorate in a presidential race?

And for all of you out there who think that Obama is so eloquent - have you not heard the Obama-isms? Bush is bad, for sure. Take Obama away from his teleprompter, and see what you're left with. Ask for a specific answer to a specific question, and it's even worse!

I'm no McCain fan, either, so I'm feeling rather disheartened by all of this. I just don't care what the Germans think, when it comes to sovereignly electing our own leaders.

I cannot help but get emotional every time I read about, hear or see this guy.
Are we being fully aware that we are touching history?
A B-L-A-C-K man representing USA, and being idolatred by the way, at Germany?
Obama is such a fresh breath of air that gives me the chill. I never saw him altered in any way, or out of control, or answering unthoughtfully.
Of course this is shallow anecdotical, what is important is his policies, so I say, OMG, what a turn of events!
America, the mythical Phoenix of great beauty, to burn itself on an interminable funeral Bushian-pyre, and to rise from its ashes in the freshness of youth and live through another cycle of years, an emblem of immortality, of reborn idealism and hope!

If he thinks Americans are so stupid and snobby because we don't speak foreign languages then why didn't he give his speech in GERMAN?

Posted by: Adolph | Jul 24, 2008 4:55:00 PM

The fact is Obama is intelligent and has run a stellar campaign. He's worked the system to his advantage and in ways no one has ever seen. He's innovative and knows how to run his business.

McCain has no idea what a Sunni is, he doesn't know which country's border Iraq and yesterday talked about a Sunni sheik who was protected by the 'surge' and helped lead the Anbar Awakening that was actually assassinated by al-Qaeda in midst of the fighting.

I don't want another ill informed, idiotic man in office again after that useless disaster Bush finally leaves office.

Because one Democrat is not interchangeable with another. Because there are such things as principles and keeping one's promises. Because if there is no trust, then it does not matter what "fresh approach" Obama promises to bring. Because no Democrat could ever anticipate that Obama, of all people, would vote with the Republicans for FISA.
His supporters did not think he would throw them under the bus, but that's because they weren't paying attention.
I won't be the only ex-Dem who voted for Kerry but has no compunction not voting for Obama.

Posted by: RC ATL | Jul 24, 2008 4:18:04 PM

RC ATL: I just don't understand how anybody who voted for John Kerry could consider it a pleasant possibility that Obama loses. There is no question that someone with Obama's ideals and John Kerry's experience would be a great president. But you have a simple choice between two options, and I can't see that "simply measured experience" is the prevailing factor. The policies of these two candidates couldn't be further apart. And McCain's policies are an economic and foreign policy disaster (i.e. one that has proven itself disastrous over 8 years), while Obama's policies promise a fresh approach to responsibility, government, and equality in this country.

What 4th amendment issue are you blaming him for, warrant-less wire taps? Guantanamo?

Looks like the one million "fans" that were expected forgot to come and hear Obama, even though the preliminaries featured 2 popular rock bands. Obama is a shadowy and hollow candidate who will say anything to get votes. McCain 08; Hillary 2012!!

Would Barack Obama have gone to Berlin to give the speech he gave today if he had not defeated Senator Hillary Clinton----the answer is clearly no. Obama says he came as a citizen and not as a candidate for the Presidency yet he gives a “campaign speech”. His speech was nothing special, just big words and actually not well put. “I know that I don't look like the Americans who've previously spoken in this great city” obviously referring to the “race issue”. “The journey that led me here is improbable”, is what he is saying unlikely and unbelievable because I am from America where they have racism there. Is he telling the people of Berlin and the world if I do not win the Election it is because there is racism in America? Is that the message that he is sending to the world, not that he is inexperienced, young, with an ego the size of Mount Olympics. “That is why America cannot turn inward. That is why Europe cannot turn inward. America has no better partner than Europe.” Well America has many Allies that have stood and fought with us for freedom, giving the nod to Europe as the best is offensive to the other countries that maybe aren’t as big as Europe, but gave sacrifices and stood by America. Very disappointed in what I see and hear from a candidate that has not been elected by the people, and for the people---meaning he shouldn’t be representing America’s interests to all of these people with first being Elected by America.

This isn't the first time a charismatic speaker with terrible ideas charmed a large crowd in Germany....

Posted by: 1936 | Jul 24, 2008 3:48:19 PM

So wait Max--how does the claim that this nation is in horrible economic condition make a 1.5 year US Senator qualified to be president? Riiiiight.

Posted by: RC ATL | Jul 24, 2008 3:40:12 PM

His speech came after 2 acts by famous German acts, so he could get the crowd.

I heard his speech and it seemed he was thanking the Conservatives for getting the wall taken down. Your Welcome Obama!!

His talk of sacrifice was for everybody to pay higher taxes so he could live the big life!!

Obama you are NO JFK and Definitly NO Reagan

Maybe Stalin or Carl Marx you resemble!!

CFB-Tell you what. You keep Bush and his 6 years experience as TX Governor. I'll take, Obama's 2 years in the Senate, (and Lincoln's 2 years in the House).

Nice job.

Case and point:

Imagine you are in high school. (From the looks of things in here, it shouldn't be hard for many of you)

Would you vote a Freshman into the Senior Class President position simply because a Senior wrote him a good speech?

Case and Point.

The Socialist Movement in America do not need someone with experience to lead them. They have Marx, Lennin, Trotsky, Castro, Putin, and Solana as their guides. They need a puppet. Someone who just wants to be in power. Clinton worked well. OBama will work better because he doesn't have the baggage of graft, sex, and 500 murdered/suicided friends. This is about pushing the USA into a more compatible environment to be integrated into a World Government. 95% of the World is Socialist. For a World Socialist System to be implemented, the USA must become socialist.

Obama will drag the USA to that point.

The election will be Ford vs. Carter 2.0.

Obama will be Carter 2.0 A pawn in the hand of his handlers...

America deserves this. Fat lazy Americans. We are ignorant and stupid. 64% of Americans cannot name our V.P. More can point to Sri Lanka on a map.

We allow idiots to vote and thus shall we reap an Idiotic Result. All that really matters is that each gets what is coming to them.

The spectacle of the obuma rally is that a community leader/activist is a frontrunner for Our President's seat.

It is an embarrassment to our country.

Who does this obuma really think he is......

to keep all his promises during the campaign---he will be raising taxes, and lowering our National security and promising Billions of aid to Africa and every other 3rd world counties....

it's like voting in a boyscout leader as a General to our Armed Forces.

"And the critics keep harping, while he builds momentum".

how TRUE. such momentum that when he and his lemmings reach the edge of the political precipice, there is no way but DOWN.

Posted by: strike a pose | Jul 24, 2008 2:32:26 PM

"Obama has 143 days in the senate. That's his experience. That's it (unless you want to count "community organizer". This guy wants to lead the free world and yet he's never led anything. No track record. Nothing to say that he has leadership qualities. Good speaker? So what. He couldn't get beyond an entry level job - if he could get hired for a job at all. Core values are unclear. He can't command the trust that the President job requires."

Obama has no clue when it comes to the economy. Ben Stein was on Kimmel las year promoting his new book. Stein knows how to make a dollar or several million. Kimmel asked Stein if Obama should read his book. Stein said no, he should start with something more suited to his education level on the economy like simple addition and subtraction. Obama supporters believe he has it all worked out, and he carries on like he does. But it is just like his health care plan. He gave a speech in Raliegh yesterday, pulled Elizabeth Edwards up on stage and told the audience that he was going to contact her at sometime in the future and the two of them were going to sit down and figure this health care policy thing out. He has been running for President for a year and a half now he claims and he doesn't even know what his health care plan is? Apparently he thinks if he says health care for everyone, that it wioll just happen. And what qualifies Elizabeth Edwards to develop this policy? Maybe she, or Caroline Kennedy, when she's not writing a cookbook or picking vp candidates, can help him out with his economic policies too. All through the primaries, I kept asking Obama supporters exactly what his polciies are and none of them could tell me. The reason why is he doesn't know himself.

Obama has the worst track record of all 3 candidates when it comes to getting back to the Senate to vote - he's missed more votes than either McCain or Hillary. Kind of makes you think he only wanted that Senate seat as a stepping stone to the presidency.

Get rid of the Republican and Democrat garbage.

Check out the Libertarian website. We need to start a third party and give the American people the change they really want.

Libertarianism is the way.

The 2 parties we have now are the same person with 2 different puppets.
