Obama Opponents Seize New Yorker Cover

July 14, 2008 2:46 PM

"Sum Of Our Fears?" asks one conservative website, approvingly re-printing the controversial New Yorker cover of the Obamas. "I chuckled upon first glance and thought, 'Yup, that about sums up how I feel about the Obamessiah and his ilk.' ...Evidently the artist did the drawing to sum up all 'conservative' fears of this man. The artist is correct. But I don’t call them fears.  They are concerns.  The picture show’s all things we now to be true about them - except the picture above the fireplace."

And over at StoptheACLU.com, another conservative writes that "this caricature hits the proverbial nail on its proverbial head. No single illustration could more perfectly convey the legitimate — I repeat, legitimate — fears and concerns that so many of us have about the prospects of an Obama Presidency...We can only hope that this shocking New Yorker cover takes on a life of its own, and is seen by millions of potential Obama supporters. Maybe, just maybe, where our thousands of words have failed, a picture can succeed."

The always-interesting Ta-Nehisi Coates writes that "the problem is that it's very hard to satirize the rumors around Michelle and Barack. Satire needs overstatement. But the cover doesn't actually overstate the beliefs of the scaremongers. Indeed its the sort of image you'd expect to see at one of the nuttier websites or publications, and so in that sense it doesn't work very well….My point is that that this cover actually does reflect--not exaggerate, not satirize--the views of a sizeable portion of Americans. That image is exactly what Fox News thinks of Barack and Michelle."

While I'm linking to Coates, he has an interesting take on Jesse Jackson as well.

Mr Jake Tapper with all due respect, what is your motive in tying to bring these stories which I guess you know dont sound good and may be damaging and yet you know they are not true to the people of america?
If I am not right you might be having your own probs to solve....These are tough times to start amplifying what the right-wing blogs have to say.
The only good thing one could be proud of is to be on the right side of history.

The cover is both offensive and enlightening, it's perception IMO.

As for the race, i'm REALLY hoping an independent jumps into the fray soon.

It's obvious that the New Yorker's staff and writers are jilted Clinton supporters, who found an avenue to get revenge on Obama, cowardly hiding under the veil of satire.

The truth of the matter is that the majority of Americans are NOT intellectuals and cannot distinguish between satire and reality, and this cartoon will hurt Barack Obama, which I'm sure the New Yorker editor and writers knew when they decided to publish the trash.

Tasteless, offensive, irresponsible and childish; I won't be picking up the New Yorker at a newstand or a library again.

The New Yorker has recycled
old garbage and is passing
it off as satire for the
sophisticates.

I just love this level of debate and dialogue. Brings me back to first grade. I'm moving to Canada.

I am a republican who is excited to vote for Obama. And had Hilary won the nomination, I would have voted for McCain. However, since my candidate of choice, a candidate who I believe can excite and motivate the American people to embark on real, necessary change, will be the democratic nominee, I can rest easier. McCain, though a strong candidate is too old to be president. He is unwilling to make the hard environmental changes we need to combat global warming and he has no time table to bring our troups home from Iraq. In fact, I'm not sure McCain would stay out of other foreign wars, etc. It is time for a change, it is time for a new beginning, it is time for a president that stands for something and inspires his people.

The New Yorker magazine has one of the best covers in a long time. Finally the truth came out and it took a magazine to do it. The majority of people in this country who voted for Obama knowing his background of racism and white hating have to be in his same category. And knowing that both he and Michele did not like America. Now he is using this country for his own advantage and the people are falling for it. If he wins the presidency god help us because we are going to need his help. And after what he said about giving Bin Laden the death penalty, don't worry he is not going to catch him.

kurt: You need to get a copy of his Bio from the NYT. When Obama was young in Kenya he was training to be a Muslim and went to the school there. His father is a Muslim and he wanted Obama to be one. Obama and Michele did not like America that's why they attended a racial church with a racist pastor. Read more of him. He is not fit to be our president.

bhrandon:For your information Hillary did have it wrapped up until Nancy, Dean and Reid wheeled and dealed the superdelegates to vote for Obama because Nancy wants to be the woman in charge. She is so stupid I don't know how she ever got the job. Dean has a big mouth and a small head and Reid should be in a rocking chair. Hillary was ahead in the superdelegates and Obama also wheeled his way of favors granted to the superdelegates like passing bills that shouldn't be passed. Anyone who chooses friends like Wright, Ayers, Father P. Farrakhan, Ayres is not trustworthy to be president of this country. Obama was so desperate to be a senator he played dirty pool to the woman running against him and took her to court lying on her and won. But his day is coming and it won't be long.

The cartoon would have been funny had they had Karl Rove drawing it.

Posted by: X marks the spot | Jul 15, 2008 1:12:47 PM

the drawing is not offensive to me because why we would we want a islamic president? i mean he if obama was elected president you guys wouldn't think there could be more terrorists attacks in the U.S i mean how do we know that the guy isn't setting one up right now? i dont feel safe with obama being my president

Every time Americans gas up, they are reminded that the Democrats’ refusal to allow oil drilling virtually anyplace has caused the long-term escalation in oil prices in the United States. Democrats don’t say they oppose all drilling, but they do. You can drill, but not in Alaska, not off shore, not in the shale, etc.. McCain is benefiting and Obama suffering because of the drilling issue. It is most likely this issue which is driving the closing of the race. Rasmussen has the race tied for two days in a row in his tracking and Newsweek has the Obama lead collapsing from fifteen points to three. And it may be oil that is driving the difference.

The fist bump in the cartoon is something they actually do, not a smear. The artist basically took every mean thing said about the Obamas and put it into this image. The problem is that there's a lot of people out there who actually believe this stuff so the cartoon is not helpful in the least bit.

"BILL CLINTON WAS 45 IN 1992. HE WAS BORN IN 1946. DO THE MATH."

But Bill had already governed a state!
Obama spent six years in the state senate doing nothing until when, in his final year, he was visited by one Emil Jones who gifted him with a packet of legislation to pass of as his own.... in return for pork bellies and the chance to "make a real senator".

Obama came into the political limelight with two semi-autobiographical novels filled with hype and distortionss which he passed on as "my story".....

Looking for the real Obama is like looking through a cracked glass.. darkly......

Who IS HE?????

This whole thing is so classic! Harold Ross's metropolitan magazine cover goes viral in Dubuque. On the Internet, no one knows you're a satirist.

The whole kerfluffle shows no one in the Obama or McCain camps with the wit to do something cool with such an opportunity.

Let's draft Hillary August 25. Get some intelligence back in the White House. Please?

Maybe it takes a Rhodes Scholar?

ABC NEWS has to be applauding The NEW YORKER'S cover. Is it not the duty of the news media to act as surrogates for the campaigns and test the party's strategies for them? This was the explanation given by George Stephenopolous following the Obama-Clinton debate when Obama had to defend himself from right wing attack emails asked by Stephenopolous at the request of Sean Hannity.

I wish Obama would stop whining. He's such a flip-flopping wimp.

Politics is a blood sport. Get used to it. As former Pres. Harry Truman liked to say "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". He was great.

There is no political will or money for national health care. The best we can hope to achieve are minor reforms. Hillary is the only candidate who can accomplish any reforms in health care. The Dems can still nominate Hillary and should. Otherwise, it's Pres. McCain.
