Obama Opponents Seize New Yorker Cover

July 14, 2008 2:46 PM

"Sum Of Our Fears?" asks one conservative website, approvingly re-printing the controversial New Yorker cover of the Obamas. "I chuckled upon first glance and thought, 'Yup, that about sums up how I feel about the Obamessiah and his ilk.' ...Evidently the artist did the drawing to sum up all 'conservative' fears of this man. The artist is correct. But I don’t call them fears.  They are concerns.  The picture show’s all things we now to be true about them - except the picture above the fireplace."

And over at StoptheACLU.com, another conservative writes that "this caricature hits the proverbial nail on its proverbial head. No single illustration could more perfectly convey the legitimate — I repeat, legitimate — fears and concerns that so many of us have about the prospects of an Obama Presidency...We can only hope that this shocking New Yorker cover takes on a life of its own, and is seen by millions of potential Obama supporters. Maybe, just maybe, where our thousands of words have failed, a picture can succeed."

The always-interesting Ta-Nehisi Coates writes that "the problem is that it's very hard to satirize the rumors around Michelle and Barack. Satire needs overstatement. But the cover doesn't actually overstate the beliefs of the scaremongers. Indeed its the sort of image you'd expect to see at one of the nuttier websites or publications, and so in that sense it doesn't work very well….My point is that that this cover actually does reflect--not exaggerate, not satirize--the views of a sizeable portion of Americans. That image is exactly what Fox News thinks of Barack and Michelle."

While I'm linking to Coates, he has an interesting take on Jesse Jackson as well.

If Barack Obama truly respects the U.S. Constitution and he claims to be a constitutional law expert, I suggest he'd re-read 4th amendment. Obama just signed away our rights when he wrongly voted FOR both FISA bills after he repeatedly promised for two years to vote against FISA. Obama is not a man of his word. Obama is a fraud. The Obamarama has been a media driven illusion.

The media will NOT decide this election, the people will.

But what about the fact that some folks see the images not as a satirical caricature but as an accurate portrait?-

What of it?? Sort of the same question that was asked with the Danish Mohamed drawings.

Remember that great statement by an early American: I might disagree with what you say, but I will die fighting for your right to say it (paraphrasing).

Doesn't look like satire to me...

Accurate and appropriate...

Indications of the birthpains of an Obama regime...

J

was she thinking on her feet when she voted for the war,

was she thinking on her feet when she went negative during the campaign

was she thinking on her feet when she said those things about kennedies assassination?

i mean what exactly are you trying to say... she cant think on her feet any better then obama can and does

s.b.,

the article was a glowing report of Obama's campaign.

The cover was intended to make fun of uninformed voters like you.

Great cover! I hope next cartoon will include Obama with his friends from Chicago: William Ayres, Bernadine Dohrn, Rev. Wright, Tony Rezko, Chicago's own resident international fugitive, billioner Aiham Alsammarae, the convicted former Iraqi minister of electricity who is wanted by both Interpol and the Iraqi government for the theft of $650 million of Iraqi reconstruction funds, who gave to Obama's presidential campaign six times in January, February and March. And much, much more...

Obama needs to grow a thicker skin. This stuff comes with the teritory and his closet is so chock full of things to rattle around and shine a light on, I'm not sure how the New Yorker narrowed down its options.

This is the tip of the iceburg and from a friendly publication at that.

The bloggers, who are out-raged over the cover on NY magazine, need to look up the meaning of satire. Also, there were thousands of outlandish blogs, cartoons and distortions of Clinton and McCain that you people believed were ok to print. Maybe you should not expect to have your cake and eat it too. Or what is good for the goose is good for the gander. The Obama camp was very, very good at smear tactics. This illustration was not published by the Republican Party but by a liberal magazine.

hoosiersue,

Then tell me, what in McCains Health Care proposal do YOU find appealing?

Posted by: Jane Hussein | Jul 14, 2008 5:01:18 PM

No, pt, it all comes down to whether or not Obama is qualified and ready to be POTUS. Too many of us don't believe he is.

There are things I like about Obama and things I don't like. I can say the same for McCain. But after 25 years in the Senate, I feel I know McCain and am quite comfortable handing over the keys to the White House to him. Obama shouldn't have been in such a hurry. But then, that's his bio for those who have bothered to research it.

why did you vote for bush TWICE
Posted by: bhrandon

I didn't vote either time for the idiot Bush. I have voted straight democrat since I was 18. Sooooo... your assumptions about me are completely off base.

If you are all saying Hillary has no experience she would have been the better candidate. At least she can think on her feet and doesn't need somebody telling what to say.

To the New Yorker: Your cover is offensive, degrading and in poor taste but, it shows the intellectual capacity of your editors and McCain suppoters. Intelligent thinking people should call for a boycott of your magazine.

Two articles on Bernie Mac joke.
Thousands of comments generated. Selected thousands more discarded.
Two articles on New Yorker cover.
Thousands of comements generated.
Select thousands more deleted.

Headline Generated: WEB TRAFFIC PROVES
DOUBTS GROWING ABOUT OBAMA.

It will still cost over $4 a gallon when next you fill up in these imaginary tough times plaguing our nation of whiners as we suffer through this mental recession.

Im glad you want to bring up this supposed lack of experience by obama...

he seems in comparison to some of our most succesful presidents to have enough experience

and exactly like someone else said, if this is qualification enough for you, why did you vote for bush TWICE, and how does MCCAIN have the experience to be president

just because you are the oldest person alive doesnt mean you know how to be a leader

Ronald Reagan, who served as the President of the United States from 1981-1989, had only eight years of government experience - three fewer than Obama - on his "resume."

Similarly, 20th century Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson won the presidency despite having thinner resumes than Obama (Wilson, for example, served a single two-year term as the Governor of New Jersey prior to becoming President).

This is a common myth perpetuated by the right and reinforced by Senator Clinton who had less elected and legislative experience than Obama. Additionally, both Bush and Bill Clinton had less foreign policy experience than Senator Obama.

And of course, as well as Senator Obama's 8 years in the State Senate of Illinois and 3 years in Congress, a total of 11 years in elected office, he has something that is probably more important and more relevant to becoming President than any one of the candidates who vied for the Presidency this year, and that is his years spent teaching constitutional law.

Since George Bush has repeatedly wiped his boots on the constitution, I can't think of a better qualification than Senator Obama's experience as a constitutional Law Professor for the University of Chicago and his his civil rights experience as a lawyer.

Our constitution is in dire need of someone as President who respects it, and understands it from a legal standpoint.

Combine that with the fact that 65% of the DEMOCRATIC Party said she is untrustworthy (that is her OWN people) and you have lots of drawbacks.

Please let me know how YOU see her pulling this off?????Posted by: Jane Hussein |

You underestimate the power of a Clinton when they are counted out :)

Posted by: J | Jul 14, 2008 4:36:49 PM

AJ

so you want to give the nomination to someone who didnt win

and thats fair

you want to take hillarys 18 million votes and say they are more important then barracks 18 million votes

sorry but hillary doesnt deserve the nomination, had she ran a good campaign instead of just thinking she had it all wrapped up way back in december

and yes she did say she would have it all wrapped up by february fifth

too bad i guess

if you want to see someone complete unelectable, tehn nominate hillary at the convention, and watch mccain lead by 30 points as way more obama supporters would refuse to vote for hillary if she somehow stole the election...

i know its your little fantasy but it wont ever happen hillary will never be president...

EVER

Hey Niel,

Stop with the victim speak. You can make a difference by getting a Dem back into the White House.

Vote McCain and lose your house, and your job. Good luck with that!

Posted by: Jane Hussein | Jul 14, 2008 4:32:52 PM

IN THIS ELECTION EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT EXPERIENCE. I DON'T THINK MCCLAIN NOR HILLARY HAS EVERY BEEN PRESIDENT. SO WHERE IS THE SO CALLED EXPERIENCE? AND BEING MARRIED TO ONE DOES NOT COUNT AS EXPERIENCE.

Posted by: Paula |

If you are going to put a candidate down, at least get their name right. It's McCain. Secondly, what experience does Obama have. A community organizer, state senator and 143 days in the US Senate before he announced his candidacy.

Posted by: J | Jul 14, 2008 4:31:34 PM

AJ,

Let's look at your proposal with some logic.

Let's say Clinton does pull this off at the Convention.

She is now the Nominee in LATE August. She is already deeply in debt. No she has to start a POTUS campaign with ZERO money, compared to McCain's $50 million. Who do YOU suppose will be giving her that money? Obama supporters would not give a dime. By the end of August, gas will be at $5 per gallon.

So you want her to have only 3 months, to put together a campaign staff, a platform, a message, and raise approx $50 million???

She had 15 months to do this in the Primary and couldnt do it.

Why does this make ANY sense to you?

And who will vote for her in the GE? She maybe will be 1 million of Obama's votes, but not likely.

Combine that with the fact that 65% of the DEMOCRATIC Party said she is untrustworthy (that is her OWN people) and you have lots of drawbacks.

Please let me know how YOU see her pulling this off?????

This is what happens when the media once again did not do it's job; let alone the DNC. No vetting, this guy Obama is a fraud, not because of the New Yorker cover; but because of his character and judgement, which he has neither.

What a huge mistake the media and the DNC made putting up this guy.

I am a democrat who will either sit home or vote McCain. That's it. Once again, the American people lose.
