Obama the Empathetic
July 14, 2008 10:32 AM
Once you get past the controversial cover, this week's New Yorker has a Ryan Lizza look at Sen. Barack Obama's rise, which includes this nugget, a post-9/11 op-ed Obama wrote in the Hyde Park Herald:
"Even as I hope for some measure of peace and comfort to the bereaved families," Obama wrote, "I must also hope that we as a nation draw some measure of wisdom from this tragedy. Certain immediate lessons are clear, and we must act upon those lessons decisively. We need to step up security at our airports. We must reexamine the effectiveness of our intelligence networks. And we must be resolute in identifying the perpetrators of these heinous acts and dismantling their organizations of destruction.
"We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, and may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.
"We will have to make sure, despite our rage, that any U.S. military action takes into account the lives of innocent civilians abroad. We will have to be unwavering in opposing bigotry or discrimination directed against neighbors and friends of Middle Eastern descent. Finally, we will have to devote far more attention to the monumental task of raising the hopes and prospects of embittered children across the globe—children not just in the Middle East, but also in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and within our own shores."
Interesting.
The Hyde Park Herald published a special Obama issue in February 2007 that includes some other nuggets.
Michelle Obama, for instance, says that "What makes me unique is not only that I come from the community, but I have this Ivy League degree that makes me credible on the other side." And while she praises her husband to high heaven, she also notes that "The thing about Barack is that he is not Mr. Door Opener. I don't think he knows those rules. But he is very romantic."
State Sen. Kwame Raoul, who replaced Obama in the state legislature, says that Obama's advice to him was very simple: "Stay out of jail"
Rev. Jeremiah Wright writes about how he and Obama are (were?) "kindred spirits."

The picture on the New Yorker magazine is an embarrassment to the United States of America. To insinuate that Barack and Michelle Obama are terrorists is beyond any standard of decency. In addition, it further fuels the misconception that Muslim = Terrorist. There are Muslims that are citizens of the United States of America and deserve respect.
In addition, the Afro hair on Michelle is racists, indicating the African-American's are terrorists or whatever negative concept they are trying to convey. It just shows that Rev Wright was correct about racism/ethnic discrimination that is more hidden, but still exists. A very sad day for America.
I am also amazed at the number of posters making hateful statements about Obama. Even people that do not want him to be President should be offended by the picture.

So, let me get this straight. Reading all these posts, most of them terribly written, I almost cannot believe these are the issues you people are going to vote on in November.
Is Obama a US citizen? LOL. Yes, yes he is.
Is John McCain eligible to be President? Yes, yes he is.
Also, what exactly constitutes "experience to be President"? Did George W. Bush have this experience and judgement? If not, you still voted him in twice. If so, I'd prefer a President with a different set of "experience".

PUMA Supporter: Darrell
I don’t like Obama because he’s a fraud, and don’t really know what heck he’s doing, Obama so far has flip flopped on major issues that he was one time for or against, America does not need an indecisive leader like Obama who change stances with the wind, Obama’s actions would make America a laughing stock globally. I can’t wait until the 527’s and the Republican swiftboat machine goes after him for all the lies he has told throughout this campaign, he don’t have Hillary as a buffer anymore, he’s going to have to roll with the punches or get out the ring, and so far, he’s not doing so well, he’s made many of his own supporters upset with for voting yes on Bush’s FISA bill, and befroe it’s all over, Obama is going to make many more major bloopers like this one, he’s proving out to be very inexperienced for the office of the Presidency. I hope the Superdelegates wake-up and realize that Obama is not the right African American to be America’s Commander and Chief.
I would love to have an African American running for President who’s a little more experienced, qualified, and decisive, Obama through his behaviors and actions is definitely not ready for the big time, and PUMA supporters like myself are trying hard to block his offical nomination at the Denver DNC Convention and/or Presidency. Anyway, it’s time to see what a woman can do as President for a change, it’s always been a man in the White House it’s time for the government to be a true equal opportunity employer and let a woman have the keys to the Oval office whether she’s White or Black; it does not matter to me just as long as she’s equally qualified and experienced as a man to be our commander and chief.
Finally Obama needs to stop whinning and complaining everytime a statement, article or magazine photo ptrays him as a Muslim, I'm referring to the New Yorker Magazine fron cover, come on Obama this is politics, if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen, true leaders don't whine and complain, but brush it oof like a man and keep on stepping, this shows his immaturity, if Obama can't take little jokes and fun like this, my God what how would he act under pressure in a crisis, Obama ought to know when you're running for the highest office in the land, you are subject to all sorts of ridicule and jokes, that's why I think you're not mature or experienced enough to be President in these trying times, we need a strong grown-up, to lead this country, not a whinning 46 year old kid.
Go Hillary, McCain, or Nader For President!!

Love the cover of the New Yorker Magazine!
And how about Michelle's comment, "this Ivy League degree makes me credible." ?!? Didn't Bush go to Yale?
Obama's charade (he calls it a campaign) is getting desperate now that his true colors are coming out.

I like the New Yorker cover too! A picture is worth a thousand words!!!
Obama is such a fake, soft and confused.
He has so little substance and is unelectable.
To bad the DNC screwed up this whole fiasco of a primary and they won't stop till the train wreck has exploded!

Obama drama again?
Wake up, young people!
He is just filling you with those
'warm fuzzies' that your work obsessed
parents did not have time to give you.
Use your minds, think, and make a decision about who is really going to make practical decisions about getting America solvent and sturdy once again.

Try again.
"can anyone on this post name one politican who has not flipped flopped?"
If the candidate offers evidence for a change of position, that is leadership. If the candidate replies that changing their mind is a sign of leadership, that is a flip flop.
The difference is not that subtle but extremely important.

"idiots in charge shoving Obama down our throats."
Who shoveled anything? At first Clinton had the backing of all the insiders and was given presumptive-nominee status. Obama got the votes, and in completely legitimate ways. Why do you think he's an idiot, anyway?

DaveinOH, there have been a few Democrats that held nearly 20+ point advantages, nationally, prior to or just coming out of their Convention. The races got significally closer by the general election, in fact several of the Democrats ended up losing the general election after such a lead. My point is if they are for all practical purposes tied now, nationally, the state-by-state elections may not go in November as current trends indicate.

This year 2008 should have been a cakewalk for the Dems, not now with the idiots in charge shoving Obama down our throats. It is so sad that the worst president EVER and his administration of evil doers are looking like the king of the hills AGAIN! What in the world are the DNC delegates and super dels thinking?? The Obama is a joke on our country we need a LEADER not a nobody who lacks judgement and experience. IT is terrifying!

"Better dead than Red"

Is the problem with the post dead or red?
Posted by: JR | Jul 14, 2008 2:06:48 PM
Just Curious: Yeah, and what's your evidence that it was forged again? Oh, right, the spoof that someone did of the actual certificate.
If it was really forged, it would be in the MSM blasting loud and clear. McCain, of course, was born in a Panama city hospital, not on American soil or even in an American base, by the way. I won't hold that against him, but think about that a bit.

Posted by: angie | Jul 14, 2008 1:54:08 PM
Jon: Obama will not debate McCain until the conventions are over.I doubt very much it will be on McCains terms either.

Aston, I'd call the Israeli/Palestinian conflict a nightmare not anyones dream, unless your insane. As for making stuff up, I stand by what I said, what did I make up?

When McCain is in his rocking chair on the front porch, don't forget to put a "Bud" in one hand. I wonder how much Cindy will make off of the sale?
As far as you Obama haters go, why don't you all join the military and head to Iraq? Spread your hate over there instead of in the U.S.

Linda,
If you haven't caught on, I despise both these candidates. I was not pulling punches calling mccain a compromiser. He's every bit as bad as Obama. They are both economic idiots with no principles.
Posted by: Jon | Jul 14, 2008 1:50:45 PM
I'm sure you would like to see that JR. Would make you feel comfortable in that Blue Jersey. Both these candidates are LOSERS. I don't care if you are a red or blue jersey wearer, those who aren't either red or blue lemmings (and I think a LOT of people who usually are either R or D's usually) are very disenfranchised by both candidates. Obama would rather face a firing squad than a town hall debate, and McCain would rather be back in Viet Nam than have to get questions about economics. Both are weak ineffectual candidates, otherwise they wouldn't CARE about smears. I'm no Bush supporter, or Bill Clinton Supporter, or Reagan Supporter, or Carter Supporter, but LOOK at what those guys had to face from the press on a DAILY BASIS. Those guys took it and didn't go out crying about it. Now look at these two crybabies. Makes me sick to think one of them is going to be leading our country. If they had ANY principles, they would IGNORE what the papers and columnists said. Clinton was widely mocked, and was Reagan and Carter, and Bush has had movies about him, tv shows, and every day someone attacks him personally, yet he doesn't stoop to that level. These two whiners are disgusting to me.
