Obama to House Dems: If Sanctions Fail, Israel Will Likely Strike Iran

July 30, 2008 9:30 AM

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met with House Democrats yesterday, talking about his trip abroad and his observations.

Obama told the caucus, according to an attendee, "Nobody said this to me directly but I get the feeling from my talks that if the sanctions don’t work Israel is going to strike Iran." Others in the room recall this as well.

The notion that Israel is preparing for such an action against Iran's myriad nuclear facilities is not new, with conjecture heating up in May after an Israeli military exercise featuring 150 aircraft flying almost a thousand miles over the Mediterranean Sea in what was seen as a dress rehearsal for an air strike. Now that the Bush administration is engaged in diplomatic efforts with Iran, many Israeli officials are worried the US is getting soft on Iran, prompting Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak to travel to the US this week to meet with  Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. Barak's office released a statement saying "a policy that consists of keeping all options on the table must be maintained."

Another attendee at the meeting of House Democrats recalls Obama saying that the good news is that Obama got the sense that the Arab states understand just how destabilizing a nuclear Iran would be -- a "game changer," Obama said -- because they know Israel would probably strike and that would be bad for everyone.

A senior adviser to Obama told ABC News that Obama was heartened to hear Jordan's King Abdullah share that view with him in their private meeting.

The Obama campaign had no comment.

UPDATE: Obama campaign spokesperson Wendy Morigi provided the following statement:

"Senator Obama has always said that Iran must end its illicit nuclear program.  He has advocated tough, direct engagement, backed by stronger sanctions to pressure Iran.  And, he has made it perfectly clear that Tehran should not wait for a new administration to reach agreement to end its program.”

if israel want to attack, they will! they don't need our permission and even if they did need our permission, if they want to attack, they will. we will do "nothing" to stop them, period. we have become the paper tiger, all word and talk. what we need to do is draw lines, if you will not stop enriching uranium, we will attack. here the deadline and when they haven't met that deadline, light them up!!! not shock and all (that was 4th of july fireworks), I'm talking relentess attacks that turn that sand into glass. the israeli's don't mess around, when you attack them, they strike back harder without mercy.

Amen Teresa!! Very well stated!

Strategically speaking if Israel launches an attack against Iran the USA must intercede and stop the attack. Even as far as engaging the Israel's. I say this because without a full commitment against Iran by the US and eliminating all of their offensive military forces with a massive air campaign the Iranians can very very easily close the Strait of Hormuz and the US would lose 15%-20% of its current oil supplies. This is just lunacy. Let the Iranians have their nukes, our economy and society needs a safe stable supply of oil more than we need Iran non-nuclear. We need to think about oil stability or all the governments of the world and all the rules and society's we have in place could come crashing down like a house of cards. American citizens first, Israels second. Thats my 2 cents.

We are talking about human lives here. War is not a game without terrrible consequences. Therefore anybody attacking anyone else should not be an option. The people who run our country and their counterparts in other countries are playing the game of evil. I believe Obama is trying his best to say/do all the right things in order to get into office--God bless him I hope he does it. I've heard so many stories about neocons and how one can't trust anyone (red or blue) running for office because they are funded by the same people who run our world. THis may be true--? I've heard what Ron Paul has to say and he seems the most sane and intelligent one. But I still have a bit of hope left for Obama because I DO have hope. In a world of complete MADNESS we must keep our minds and hearts in the right place...and refuse to "live by the sword"...we DO create our own reality. The way I make change in the world is to go within...and create peace...(Gandi said "be that which you want to see in the world") no insane and violent "threat" can touch perfect creation..this is the peace of God. (no I'm not "religious")all i'm trying to say is let's stop getting wrapped up in these dramas and make some peace.

Isreal will attack first. US will come to support them after the fact. USA wants Israel to be the first. And they have a right to do it. Is this such a surprise that the book of Revelation is unfolding? Just make sure you know who's side your on spiritually and let the chips fall where they have to.

Israel attacking = US attacking.

Israel has to pass through airspace we control to get there. They can't do it without our permission.

A one week vacation abroad and now he's a foreign policy expert? Yah right... If he gets elected, I'm leaving the USA....stat!

Posted by: Christy | Jul 31, 2008 7:41:00 AM

Obama is as uninformed as the other american politicians. He talked only to the american clients in the arab world like Jordan's king and generalizes to state that arab states also share concern about Iran's nuclear power. He is a tool of the AIPAC and Israelis as much as the members of congrerss. Ask yourselves, why should Israeli minister Barak even dare tell america that "all options SHOULD stay on the table"? Just another example that U.S. foreign policy is made in Israel not in washington. Shame on all Americans who support this.

obama has no idea what he is talking about. he is about 1 year too late. it is his way of appealing to the middle when we all know he is far far far left

Posted by: danimal123 | Jul 31, 2008 6:41:09 AM

Why is everyone so concerned? Whatever takes place is between two countries othr than ourselves. Can't we just stand back for a change and watch?

Geeze, everytime we jump into it, we are called the villians. Yep, and our own yell the loudest. I wonder who wins
or do they just knock themselves silly.

You can curse me, no problem. But just try my approach at least once. You'll enjoy it.

"...an intelligent candidate in Obama..."

Are you KIDDING me? The man can't make any sense unless he reads from a prepared speech, his woeful lack of anything intelligent to offer is his one-liner generalities ("we are the ones we are waiting for," and the rest of these, including the "people of the world" grandiosity).

His "experience" is defined as "a community organizer" and with associations that are anything but intelligently organized or run, and, Obama's litany of outright LIES run something like a badly written comic book wannabe.

He even can't practice that "law" he alleges to be an expert of, since he's currently being sued by a local bar associaton FOR LYING ON HIS APPLICATION FOR A LAW LICENSE (which he does not have, by the way, he's not licensed to practice law). Even his own "autobiography" by his own admission contains lies (which he fancies to be "distortions" and "exaggerations" --- the rest of us recognize those as "lies").

Obama gets crowds fomenting emotionally when he plays basketball, talks in his Mr. Preacher voice with inanity after inanity, and then intends to raise taxes (no other solutions by Liberals/Democrats exists other than raising taxes) and do away with any improvements that currently exist in the U.S. as to conditions and in the international community elsewhere. He can only get so far on group hugs and crowds fainting and eventually, his "God complex" will be found out to be the utter profanity that it, and he, is.

Everyone calm down, Sen. Obama's going to win this race so get use to it, lol Sen. Obama's the only one ready to lead this country AT-THIS-MOMENT-IN-TIME so I would suggest to all you neocons sit back and enjoy the ride like I had to do for 8 years of Cheney/Bush (with no stopping for bathroom breaks no matter how ill I felt).

to B Sefranick: the difference is that they WANT TO CHANGE OUR WAY OF LIFE and have threatened our very existence.

The article states that if there will be a nuclear Iran, "Israel would probably strike and that would be bad for everyone."

Is everybody stupid? When Israel destroyed the nuclear reactors in Iraq in 1981 & in Syria last year, that was good for everyone!!!

How will removing a nuclear bomb from the crazies in Iran be bad for everyone???

Collin, race has never been made an issue in the election between McCain and Obama. Nor will it ever be.

Also, a real leader does what he thinks is right despite what those around him are saying. We elect leaders to make those difficult decisions. When those difficult choices are made it can be expected that it might not be popluar. The US is not trying to win a popularity contest (despite Obama's galavanting across the country), all we care about is making the world a safer place for everyone.

Mr. Obama's visit to the Middle East was purely to bolster his image in the USA. The leaked information regarding his conversations with those he met with, were simply a part of his posturing, and very unfortunate that he could not maintain confidence regarding high-level conversations with world leaders. His philosophies are still inline with the democratic socialists in our country. He will be just as weak on defense and terrorism as all the other democrats, who cringe at the idea of spending any money on the military, which they want to spend on social vote-buying programs, and do not understand foreign policy. Do not be deceived by appearance, charisma, great oratory, sound-bite speeches, etc. Look at the philosophy of the democrats. That is what truly defines Mr. Obama. He will tow the party line like all the others, and continue to move us toward being a socialist nation... Gov't takeover of Healthcare and Energy are the first two pieces in the democratic puzzle to accomplish this.
The Israelis have demonstrated that they are among the most fierce fighters on the planet. And they understand better than anyone, the threats they face, because they live with those threats daily, and they have been told by terrorist nations that they will be "wiped off the map."
I understand our past philosophy regarding Israel, which was aimed at keeping conflicts to a minimum, and the false belief that a true and lasting peace could be acheived in that region, through negotiations. We now live in a new world climate, with terrorism growing... We cannot expect to negotiate successfully with terrorist nations that have pledged to "wipe Israel off the map."
The terrorist nations are lying in wait for us to elect a democrat president who will negotiate with them, or at the worst, enact some sort of sanctions upon them. That is the democrat "economy" approach, to save our money for their social programs, rather than military efforts. The terrorist nations understand this very well, better than most average Americans.
The "surge" has worked, to an extent, and was the correct approach. But I have to wonder whether part of the success of the "surge" was simply the terrorists deciding to wait in hopes of a democrat being elected president.
Give Israel the intelligence and support, and then let them decide. Do not hold them back any longer. Unleash them. They do not screw around. They may wipe Iran off the map, if we do not stand in their way, and it would probably not take very long. That goes for the other nations which continually threaten them. Problem solved.

If Israel attacks Iranian nuclear site reactors, it will be done with the complicity or go-ahead from whatever US administration is in place at the time. The consequences would clearly be destructive beyond the Middle East according to the head of the IAEA and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. May sanity prevail.
