Obama to House Dems: If Sanctions Fail, Israel Will Likely Strike Iran
July 30, 2008 9:30 AM
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met with House Democrats yesterday, talking about his trip abroad and his observations.
Obama told the caucus, according to an attendee, "Nobody said this to me directly but I get the feeling from my talks that if the sanctions don’t work Israel is going to strike Iran." Others in the room recall this as well.
The notion that Israel is preparing for such an action against Iran's myriad nuclear facilities is not new, with conjecture heating up in May after an Israeli military exercise featuring 150 aircraft flying almost a thousand miles over the Mediterranean Sea in what was seen as a dress rehearsal for an air strike. Now that the Bush administration is engaged in diplomatic efforts with Iran, many Israeli officials are worried the US is getting soft on Iran, prompting Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak to travel to the US this week to meet with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. Barak's office released a statement saying "a policy that consists of keeping all options on the table must be maintained."
Another attendee at the meeting of House Democrats recalls Obama saying that the good news is that Obama got the sense that the Arab states understand just how destabilizing a nuclear Iran would be -- a "game changer," Obama said -- because they know Israel would probably strike and that would be bad for everyone.
A senior adviser to Obama told ABC News that Obama was heartened to hear Jordan's King Abdullah share that view with him in their private meeting.
The Obama campaign had no comment.

UPDATE: Obama campaign spokesperson Wendy Morigi provided the following statement:
"Senator Obama has always said that Iran must end its illicit nuclear program. He has advocated tough, direct engagement, backed by stronger sanctions to pressure Iran. And, he has made it perfectly clear that Tehran should not wait for a new administration to reach agreement to end its program.”

Duh! The lightbulb just went off.
There has been strong speculation that Israel and/or the Bush administration would do an aerial attack on Iran for the past couple years before Bush leaves office (and now Olmert). Did Obama also just figure out that not just Israel but other Countries in the Middle East are concerned about Iran going nuclear? I've considered myself a Democrat my entire adult life but I have no confidence in Obama in regards to foreign policy. This is a highly intelligent individual who lacks the depth of knowledge that comes with experience and it shows. Just like the bitterness comment felt like someone who's knowledge of those blue collar voters came out of having read " What's the Matter with Kansas?" rather then any hands on experience interacting with such voters. There are those who can teach and those who can do- I think he needs to go back to teaching and writing .

Obama's unlimited arrogance and condescending ways are amazing. Why does he keep acting like he's the president of the USA? Someone close to him need to let him know that his behavior and his arrogance is a real turn off for voters.

How very perceptive for a geopolitical know-nothing empty suit.

Kevin,
Obama revealed nothing. What he said may even help the American negotiators, since Obama said do not delay. Waiting for him will not benefit you. He raised Iranian anxiety about Israel
Your so bitter nothing Obama would say would be correct.

If Obama doesn't have the common sense to keep sensitive conversations he has with foreign dignitaries, close to his vest, well it should just give us an insight into his "judgement" of lack thereof. It is the height of foolishness to go into the democratic caucus and relate personal conversations he had with heads of state, given the propensity of congressmen (of either party) to garner publicity by leaking privileged conversations.
>There's the whatever levels of left, >right, and then me and some others that >get it, alot of us that are going to be >pushed any more.
I see from the above comment that the paid Obama bloggers are out on this thread, attempting to allude that their position is centrist. You might be able to fool some of the people some of the time...etc.

Really??? Let me get this straight: ISRAEL (we destroyed the entire egyptian air force in under 12 hours) will LIKELY attack Iran if Mahmoud (Israel must be wiped off the map) Ahmadinejad gets nukes. Good thing Obama thought of this. Wow. He really is brilliant. Such foresight and geopolitical prowess. In other news, 2 + 2 = 4 and Cheese is actually made from Milk!
At least it sounds like he may be learning a little bit. He definitely isn't smarter than a 5th grader, BUT he is slightly less terrifying to me having seen that he does at least have the mental faculties to understand causality.
Now if he will apply LOGIC and causality to his tax plans and GASP the economy and the law of supply and demand, he might not be the complete disaster as a president that I'm sure either he or John McCain will be. Definitely writing in.
Decision 2008! It sounds like an Irish remake of a Jim Carrey movie: McDumb and Odumber.

Imagine Ahmadinijad inviting O'Bama to Iran for a private meeting. Obviously, he would go because he said he would like to sit down with all of the leaders of the terrorist nations. After the meeting is over the Iranian government announces to the world that a deal had been worked out and Iran would cease there nuclear development program if and when O'Bama is elected president. O'Bama and the majority of the American people are dumb enough to believe them. The American people believe that O'Bama is a genius and that his plans to negotiate with the terrorists is the right way to go and he gets elected in a landslide. McCain might as well take his name off the ballot. Then, Iran continues with its nuclear program, just as planned.

Wow, so much Obama hate. He didn't leak some important secret info. He didn't announce this "revelation" - it got picked up by the press. He's supporting Bush's actions with Iran so far. He's looking for a peaceful outcome if possible. What more do you want..?

So, the "sense that the Arab states understand just how destabilizing a nuclear Iran would be" is a revelation to Obambi and his caucus? Holy Hannah Montana. These folks really have their fingers on the pulse of the middle east, don't they.

Kevin. McCain has talked to Israel. There is nothing new with candidates visiting Israel. Don't make something out of nothing. That's what's wrong with this country. There's the whatever levels of left, right, and then me and some others that get it, alot of us that are going to be pushed any more.

Just what is Obama doing leaking high-level conversations he has had with foreign heads of state? Does this not raise red flags with anyone? Are we going to conduct foreign policy now, by caucus? Also, what is he doing discussing policy with foreign heads of state in the first place? Did he win the election, and I didn't notice? We are supposed to have one president, like him or not, at a time. This bodes ill, for the future foreign policy decisions which will be made under life and death situations.

Bill, I am just glad that Bush scared Iran enough, by being next to them, that they came clean about the dacades of hidden nuke program. Just imagine the alternative to not finding out about years of nukes. That dumb.

Obama isn’t real good at connecting the dots. He says we should not be in Iraq, but he supports Israelis right to defend themselves against a nuclear Iran. Well look at a map an you’ll realize if the US wasn’t currently in Iraq with JSTARS flying along the Iran border we wouldn’t have any intel about what Iran was doing and there would be no way for Israel to launch an attack on the Iranian nuclear facilities.

Israel is already at war with Iran, it was just in Syria last year, and now it is on their front lines. They are brave. They have to be. The lion is so close, they can smell them. Hear them roar until they roar no more.

I would actually be perfect for the white house, but I am already defending in other ways. There are no gray areas for me.

Jimbo. I'd actually be careful telling the world where you're going. I guarantee you the enemy is in here watching, and reporting, and keeping count. I sensed some earlier. You might look back at some of the rhetoric.

LOL to Haywood. Obama has class. You have to give him that. Dude is cool, but that is not necessarily what we need right now.

With all the conflicts one nano second away from obliteration, it's actually really horrifying these days. Don't forget about the big Russian and Chinese-Tiawanese, Middle East, Africa, one third of South America, Cuban, and then a 3rd of what's left. Don't forget about how important it is to stay focused and vigilant.

Great advice - off to Weber's Burgers in Orillia, ON, Sat!!

Darnobama. We're not sending troops into Iran. It is going to come to radiation in the area and troops don't do well in radiation whether they have detectors or not.
