Obama to NYT: ‘A Week of Great Press’ but ‘We Don't BUY Our Own Hype’

July 26, 2008 1:09 PM

In an interview with the New York Times' excellent Jeff Zeleny, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., says he's not "measuring the drapes" for the Oval Office, and that "we don't buy our own hype."

He discussed the risks of his international tour, saying, "In terms of raw politics, in the short term there's just as much downside as upside to a trip like this, even when it's well-executed. People at home are worried about gas prices, they're worried about mortgage foreclosures -- and for a week they're seeing me traipse around the world? It's easy to paint that as somehow being removed from people's day-to-day problems. We thought it was worth the risk."

He added, “We're in a very tight race, despite having a week of great press and John McCain having had a week of not-so-great press. If that doesn't keep you on your toes, I don't know what will."

That said, Obama thinks this trip will serve a political purpose.

"Even if the economy ends up being the dominant issue in the election, when people go to the polling place in November, [they will] have in the back of their mind, all right, here's what it looks like for Obama to be in discussions with other heads of state."

Al from NJ there are 55 countries in the world that are majority islam, which is a long way from '57 states in the nation of islam'. (Whatever that means!)

Perhaps Al mistakenly referred to Barry's reference to 57 states in the U.S.

The one thing that I agree with McCain on is the "unfair" amount of press coverage that Obama's been receiving.

The press should be around McCain 24/7 and should report every gaffe, example of ignorance, temper tantrum, and flip flop on major issues. It's only fair.

I agree. We don't need World War One Hundred Eleven.

I wonder why there was no context for "we don't buy our own hype." There were three full paragraphs of the NYT interview with none of them containing anything about the hype headline. Curious.

Why would he buy it when he gets it for free.

"Of course europeans liked him. He likes to bash our country. They love that."

They sense his weakness, which they will use to their advantage. Nothing would make some countries happier than a weakened America.

Savvy. They are probably thinking about the time the media convinced John Kerry That he was some sort of war hero.

If Obama cares about the problem in U.S why he needs to speak of the big crowd in the foreign soil? He should have a weekly town hall meeting with McCain so voters can know about his experiences and judgment.

How does Obama win by 10 points you ask?

He already is.

Most opinion polls show the race as Obama 48 McCain 41 (Gallop) Obama +7

But there are 2 other candidates, Barr aand Nader who will get a very small (but significant) 4% and 2% each. And the problem is that all the Barr votes are Republican and one-third of the Nader ones are. Net gain for Obama +3%.

Election day prediction:
Obama 53% McCain 42% Barr 3% Nader 2%

The "hype" and spin attempted by the Obama campaign regarding the canceled visit to our troops at the hospital in Germany will be the lasting "image" for the majority of Americans.

Obama showed poor judgement in canceling that visit to our wounded troops.

Obamas claim that his staff was handling that issue shows poor leadership.

The inability to admit it was a mistake to cancel that visit exposes a character flaw of Obamas.

The "images" for the most part were exellent , the substance was underwhelming at best.

Why does Obama's team have to go out and get a popular rock band to play at Obama's speeches (for free)?

Oh wait. I know why.

Lol. You guys are so gullible.

Of course europeans liked him. He likes to bash our country. They love that.

The last thing your average american cares about is how popular he is in abroad.

As it should be.

Obama has a "vision" for the future? Oh really? What is it? I've never seen a more inconsistent candidate.

I think what you meant is Obama has visions. Visions of grandeur.

He'll never be elected. Count on it.

Obama needs to remember how powerful these images can be when he considers meeting *other* world leaders, within his first year, and without preconditions (but with preparation!).

I never cease to be amazed how other people can watch the same news reports I do and come to the WRONG CONCLUSIONS!

Hooray! Go, Barak! Hooray

We learned that Obama had poor judgement when he voted against the surge.

We also learned of the character flaw in Obama when he would not admit that his vote on the surge was a mistake.

We have learned that he will ignore the advise of General Petraus and will NOT be "flexible" in his time line to remove USA combat troops out of Iraq in 16 months.

Obama will also ignore Al Malikis position of an "aspirational" goal of 20 months.

Obama obtained the status of a "rock star" and can hit three point range baskets on the court. I suggest he adds those items to his resume and creditials to be the President of the United States of America, afterall, they are as good as anything else on that resume.

I am so sick of hearing Obama's name I could puke. The Dems have become ethe Unbalanced party of the former FAUX news.
I have voted Democratic since Jimmy Carter, but after seeing the 24/7 choreographed PR stunt of Barack Obama these last two weeks, and being thouroughly sick of his outright arrogance, I have decided to vote Republican for the first time in over 30 years.

Posted by: Sherry | Jul 26, 2008 7:30:19 PM

AAHHHHH!!!! What a Humble Man. He hears the criticism of him acting as the president then he throws these phony lines. Obama Exposed.

Posted by: casey | Jul 26, 2008 6:11:24 PM

I voted for Kerry before I voted against him

Posted by: Robert Neville | Jul 26, 2008 6:09:13 PM

To some people Mccain may be old and boring but I believe that he will be POTUS. Some americans may be dumb but the majority are not.
