Obama To Talk Tough-Love at NAACP, Despite Jackson Frustrations

July 14, 2008 6:55 PM

Tonight, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. will address the 99th Annual Convention of the NAACP in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Despite the feeling among some (especially older) African-Americans that Obama has been lecturing black America too often -- a sentiment captured most vividly last week by Rev. Jesse Jackson's hot mic comments expressing a desire to castrate the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee for talking down to black people -- Obama will continue to discuss these issues before the NAACP, as he said he would.

"Now, I know some say I’ve been too tough on folks about this responsibility stuff," Obama will say, according to his prepared remarks. "But I’m not going to stop talking about it. Because I believe that in the end, it doesn’t matter how much money we invest in our communities, or how many 10-point plans we propose, or how many government programs we launch – none of it will make any difference if we don’t seize more responsibility in our own lives.

"That’s how we’ll truly honor those who came before us. Because I know that Thurgood Marshall did not argue Brown versus Board of Education so that some of us could stop doing our jobs as parents. And I know that nine little children did not walk through a schoolhouse door in Little Rock so that we could stand by and let our children drop out of school and turn to gangs for the support they are not getting elsewhere. That’s not the freedom they fought so hard to achieve. That’s not the America they gave so much to build. That’s not the dream they had for our children.

"That’s why if we’re serious about reclaiming that dream, we have to do more in our own lives, our own families, and our own communities. That starts with providing the guidance our children need, turning off the TV, and putting away the video games; attending those parent-teacher conferences, helping our children with their homework, and setting a good example. It starts with teaching our daughters to never allow images on television to tell them what they are worth; and teaching our sons to treat women with respect, and to realize that responsibility does not end at conception; that what makes them men is not the ability to have a child but the courage to raise one."

In addition to reinforcing his theme of personal responsibility, the presumptive nominee will touch upon his offer of a middle class tax cut, highlight his healthcare plan, and stress the need for education reform. The candidate also plans to briefly discuss his efforts to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit.

"because the majority of what i see, is young men, aspiring to the thug life."

Thats my point the only thing you see about black america is negative. Thats not true. There are roadblock in that you will never see because you are white. say what you will or may they do exist. All i'm saying is look beyond what the press puts out. We are not all thugs and goons out to rape pillage and kill.

Mr. Obama is only speaking the truth about an epic problem within the black community. It is the "pink elephant in the living room" that African Americans will not address, even when it is hurting the children.

but it is ESPECIALLY so in the black community. there are many studies that have been done, not by msm, but by african american groups, that support this. Dr. Cosby has been talking about this for a while.
Barack should be able to talk to black men about this,
I do not understand why jesse is not more public about this.
i will be glad when we more from all of the talk, and start seeing some results of all that you say is going on in the community. because the majority of what i see, is young men, aspiring to the thug life.

There are too many anti-Americans on here. They claim Obama is Muslim and therefore is not to be trusted. Our Constitution says we have freedom of religion. Their interpretation is that as long as you are Christian you do have freedom of religion. Second they claim he is Muslim because he went to a Muslim public school one year (fourth grade) and that his father and step father were Muslim. Both of those men abandoned him as a child. Sounds like these critics think 4th graders are accountable for the beliefs of their parents, even when they are abandoned by them. Let's use some common sense.

I don't have a problem with what Barrak is saying, I have a problem with who he is saying it to. Personal responsablity or lack of it, is not just a black problem. It goes across racial lines. As I said before in my last post, the black community knows what the problems are that plague us.And we are working on it ( of course you'll never see that thanks to the mainstream media ) Contrary to popular belief, not all black people are irresponsable. The message Barrak was preaching should go to all americans. Derelict and irresponsable parents come in all colors.

I don't care what Obama says he cant be trusted. This is all a show designed to make him look credible. His Muslem background and his radical friends will keep me from voting for him. I can't overlook his church, his minister, his friends because they were his choices. So I will not vote for Obama because of his track record. Hillary worked hard, did the right things and was not thrust into the spotlight by handelers. Obama destroyed our party and he will destroy our nation.

Hooray for Obama. Standing up to losers of any color takes courage. Bkacks don't like to hear from leaders who don't pander to them. Nobody does. I hope he puts words into action. Lets start with people who come hear and can't speak the language and attack every other group who will not adapt and fit in. This is the USA so dont come here if you want to retain the loser concepts from your nation of origin. From many one - lets get back to what works - American Pride - If Mexico and these other places are so great go home. Black kids and white kids need to learn the skills, language and courtesy that will help them move ahead. A few rich athletes, rap stars and movie stars get in our face on television and everyone wants to mimic their bad image. I am not an Obama supporter but respect andbody who tells it like it is. Many thanks

i do hold those running for president to a higher standard. they are representing this country!!!!!!!!they should represent the best in us. that is why such things as flag pins and covering ones heart during the star spangled banner are important...they are our role models. the epitomy of patriotism.
am i pleased with bush...never.
What is also disturbing to me is the thought that michelle would stand in front of this country and the world represnting a country SHE HAS NEVER BEEN PROUD OF. disgusting.

McCain graduated near the bottom of his class, is a warmonger, old and way too conservative for the country and the world. More of the same bull as Bush if you elect him. So what if he's a war hero? Does that mean he has the intellectual capability to lead this country? NO! Same as the local firefighter hero. Should he be the major of your town because he was brave? NOT NECCESARILY!

I love OBAMA!!!! He is practically the only politican I've seen for a long time to speak his mind and the truth for once. It's true--black america has become a single mother society. It needs to change. Good for him to have the guts to say something about it. I also love when he said rural folks cling to religion and guns--also a fact.

So many of you seem to be fixated on Obama's admitted drug use as a teenager. Did you have the same problem with Shurb's Bush II's coke and alcohol abuse? The latter went on well into his forties.

Brian, you're absolutely right. None of us could hold ourselves up for public scorn anywhere near as often as Obama and McCain both have to do, which is every single day.

It's just hard to sit back and take people perpetuating lies and rumors that some nut case is spinning out from behind his keyboard. My comments have been geared toward trying to make others see the errors in their judgment or beliefs about Mr. Obama. At the end of the day, people will believe what they want to believe, but EVERY person should seek the truth and try to live an honest life. That's what America means to me.

And regarding voting in the caucuses and conventions, a large number of Obama's supporters (the younger generation -- myself included) were unable to vote and show our support for our favored candidate because we were too young -- I personally was 17 when the Pennsylvania primary was held on April 22. It's a litte unfair to imply that we're spineless, when really we were held back by primary/caucus rules and law.

Obama talks down to white people, so in all fairness it's only right he makes talking down to black people a policy.

If Obama wants to give the African-American male lessons in behaviour, he should start with the lesson "how not to treat woman" and use examples from the sexist campaign he ran against Clinton.

Fascism:
A political movement that believes in an extreme form of nationalism: denying individual rights, insisting upon the supremacy of the state, and advocating one-party rule with ultimate authority resting in the hands of a dictator.

To call us a Fascist state is only partly based in fact -- some individual rights have been denied, namely the one to privacy with regards to our phone calls.

However, one-party rule has not been advocated, and ultimate authority does not rest in the hands of a dictator -- there is a system of checks and balances in our country that prevents such a thing from happening.

What really bothers me about the Bush administration is the No Child Left Behind Act. I wouldn't blow my nose on the paper that act is written on.

To require kids in IU-13 classes to pass the same standardized state tests as children with a normal mental capacity is ludicrous, ridiculous, and a pure and undiluted fallacy. What really needs to be done in this country is to provide an across-the-nation standard level of accountability for the TEACHERS. Hold them accountable for basic, fundamental teaching skills and philosophy, and if they don't measure up, bring ones in out of college who will. To hold the teachers accountable is one small step in changing this country's education system, as some of you have brought up.

Another step would be to provide government funding for schools that are out-dated, books that are out-dated, and class sizes that are far too large for the majority of students to get a good, solid education in. It's proven: small class sizes are the key to educational success, along with a good work ethic and the desire to learn. Provide funding for the new books, crumbling and over-crowded schools, and you WILL see a turnaround in our country's overall educational success.

As a side note, I find it ironic that McCain, who's supposed to stick to the fundamental family values typical of the Republican party, cheated on his wife. If THAT isn't something that defines his character, I don't know what is.

Fools: It doesn't matter who you vote for. There all on the same side.

Almost the entire Congress decided to protect the Criminal in chief instead of protecting it's citizens form being spied on. Which by the way is illegal.

You might as well live in China.

With the Patriot Act they can treat you just like your in China.

Welcome to the United States of Fascism.

Many of the comments written here highlights the level of understanding and pure commonsense. Fact:There is a crisis in the black community. Fact: parents are neglecting their responsibilities and setting poor examples. Fact: Parents have all but given up on society and accept their place on the bottom rung of the ladder. Fact: Parents don't even want to raise their heads to see that the possibilities exists for them to push their children up the ladder.

Senator Obama is RIGHT! RIGHT ON THE BUTTON! Black people need to get their act together, accept responsibility for themselves and stop complaining and start acting in a positive way.

I respectfully disagree with Sen. Obama. I have three children with two different women and have never met any of my children. However, this is 100% not my fault. It's someone else's. I don't know whose, probably the white man's. And Damn senator Obama for the wild, reckless accusation! This is not my problem.
