Obama's Globetrotting

July 18, 2008 2:17 PM

Senior advisers to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, deigned to take a few minutes to share with us some information about the senator's pending visit to Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and the UK. Any possible pending trip the senator may make to Iraq and Afghanistan was not mentioned.

"This is not a political trip," said senior Obama adviser Robert Gibbs. "This is a trip of substance."

So why is the senator going?

"To deepen -- even further -- important relationships," said Dr. Susan Rice, a top foreign policy adviser to Obama. "To exchange views with leaders whose partnerships with the US are critical…To explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation on a range of issues, such as non-proliferation, counterterrorism, energy security and climate change, and a range of regional security issues….To explore concretely opportunities for cooperation between the US and our European and Mideast allies."

Rice underlined, "it is not our intent to make policy or negotiate…There's one president of the United States at any given time and we will certainly respect that."

So why go?

"There’s a great deal that Sen. Obama and his counterparts in these negotiations can take away," Rice said.  There are an enormous range of challenges, and discussion will be valuable for all involved.

Where will Obama speak in Germany? The Brandenburg Gate or -- as has been widely reported in Germany -- at Berlin's Victory Column?

"Barack Obama made clear he didn’t think it made sense for him to speak at the Brandenburg Gate," Obama foreign policy adviser Denis McDonough said. Obama thought it seemed "too presumptuous," McDonough said.

The campaign would not say where Obama's speech in Germany will be.

The campaign is reviewing "a variety of locations in Germany, and we'll pick one that we believe meets our goals and the goals of our German hosts," said McDonough.

What will he speak about in Germany?

"It will be a substantive speech about European-American relations," Gibbs said.

Added McDonough: "Sen. Obama does want to underscore our shared values and goals and that's what he intends to do in Berlin."

What's the campaign's response to the assertion that this would seem like a political rally abroad?

“That’s not what we’re doing," Gibbs said. "The speech in Berlin will be a substantive speech about American and European relations. This trip is not at all a political trip. Or a rally of any sort. It is a series of substantive meetings with our friends and our allies to talk about the challenges we face and the national security demands for the 21st century”

Have you talked to the Bush administration about this trip at all?

"Early on in planning this process, Sen. Obama reached out to Secretary (of State Condoleezza) Rice and had a very productive conversation," said Rice, of no relation, "and we have been working with our embassies in each country.”

Who will come with him?

Obama will be accompanied on the trip by his advisers Rice, Gibbs, Dennis Ross, Jim Steinberg, Richard Danzig, Anthony Lake and Greg Craig.

With whom will he meet?

He will meet with the following world leaders:

Jordan: King Abdullah il bin al-Hussein II, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (الملك عبد الله الثاني بن الحسين‎)

Israel: Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (אהוד אולמרט‎), President Shimon Peres (שמעון פרס‎), Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipora Malka "Tzipi" Livni (ציפורה מלכּה "ציפי" לבני), Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ehud Barak (אֵהוּד בָּרָק) and leader of the Opposition in the Knesset Likud Party Chair Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu (בִּנְיָמִין "ביבי" נְתַנְיָהוּ‎).

Palestinian National Authority: Mahmoud Abbas (محمود عباس‎) (aka Abu Mazen ابو مازن) President of the Palestinian National Authority and Dr Salam Fayyad (سلام فياض‎) Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority.

Germany: German Chancellor Angela Merkel (Bundeskanzler Angela Merkel) and German Foreign Minister Walter Steinmeyer (Außenminister Walter Steinmeyer)

France: French President Nicolas Sarkozy (Président Nicolas Paul Stéphane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa)

UK: Prime Minister Gordon Brown and David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition

Also Rice and McDonough also took a few moments to suggest that, with President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., talking this week about the need to send more U.S. forces to Afghanistan as well as embarking upon more direct negotiations with the Iranian government, "the Bush administration and the McCain campaign have moved closer to Sen. Obama's position," as McDonough put it.

Said Rice, "McCain and the Bush administration are trying to play catch up and follow."

My friends....who paid for the trip? One part, the US, as for any Senator who has gone to Iraq, as McCain did several times. All of McCain's junkets around the world for "fact finding" were paid for by....YOU, the taxpayer. The rest of the Obama trip was paid for by the campaign, in the campaign plane.

I am from Arizona, and I do not want McCain as President. Why? He wants to "win" a war, but he can't get the facts straight about who we are even "fighting"! He does not know the difference between Suni and Shiite (sp?), mistakenly said that Iraq had a border with Pakistan, thinks that Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia are still around. This is a guy who is totally confused about foreign policy, sheesh, he can't even get the players straight.

I don't want this guy even driving my car. He is easily confused. If he gets a doe in the headlights look and pauses for EIGHT seconds before recovering enough to respond to a question from a reporter about birth control pills being covered by health insurance; how is he going to handle the aggressive questioning he will get from Congress, world leaders, etc.?!

Susan Rice said "There is a great deal that Sen. Obama and his counterparts in these negotiations can take away." Who are these counterparts? What is he negotiating? He is the presumptive Democrat nominee, not the president-elect. He is way overstepping his bounds if he is "negotiating with counterparts."

Obama is a man of change to whatever the polls show is needed.

That is such a lie, he did want to speak at the Brandenburg Gate, everyone else in the world thought it was 'too presumptuous'.
I guess after the polls said it was too presumptuous he decided it was too.
Hey Obama, KEEP THE CHANGE.

"This trip is not at all a political trip. Or a rally of any sort."

Akeem wrote "people should take their time and study the programme each have for your country then decide which candidate you will vote for instead of name calling" I agree, the adgendas the candidates propose is very important BUT the character and integrety of the candidate is just as important. How can you agree with a fairytale adgenda of a candidate with no experience that has shown this all through his campaign? Obama has changed his policys and ideals on so many topics from Rev. Wright to Iraq WHEN it became obvious his position was not in the best interest of his CAMPAIGN. The media gives him a free ride and more coverage than $1 billion of campaign ads could provide. Honestly, Dan Quayle didn't get by with as many mis-statements as Obama has, think about it. He really is treated like a "rock star". Tim Russert (bless him) was the only person to confront him on the FACTS. And then, with out a teleprompter and notes, Obama looked absolutley INEPT. So what I'm saying is promises mean nothing, its the person behind them that matters.
Concerning the middle east i agree with James D, they definitly are NOT a "turn the other cheek" people, they are the extreme opposite. Sadly I don't see it ever changing.
And yes, GOD bless America....

Akeem, you wrote: "...if Isreal will not shift its position on Palestine then we are in for another 50 years of the same..."

With all due respect, if the Palestinians don't shift their position--the destruction of Israel--it is going to be more of the same. It is difficult to have peace when one side wants the total destruction of the other. That goes for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as the jihad the Islamic extremists have declared against Western Civilization.

Hello guys am sick and tired of everybody on this blog critizing Obama or even McCain for that matter, people should take their time and study the programme each have for your country then decide which candidate you will vote for instead of name calling. The world can not be viewed through one is wrong and the other is wright what you continue to get is analchy compromise is the solution to the problem in the world for instance if Isreal will not shift its position on Palestine then we are in for another 50years of the same so my dear people please let us have peaceful world instead of war war which is more misery for poor and vulnerable people there is enough poverty in the world for now and the whole world is looking up to America to lead again am european may God bless America.

I think Mr. Obama assumes that the Presidentcy is already his, he may be right. But come on Mr Mcdonough! We all knew he wanted that picture of himself in front of the Brandenburg gate. This tour, or dog and pony show, with the MSM "heavies" in tow is nothing more than a campaign swing, disguised as a "fact" finding tour.

So, Obama is taking his brother love traveling salvation show to Europe and the Middle East! What a spectacle. This whole election is just one big circus. Send in the clowns -- all 300 of them to help the inexperienced upstart Senator get up to speed on foreign policy! Former President Bill Clinton had it right all along: "Give me a break. This whole thing is the biggest fairytale I’ve ever seen."

Still nothing to confirm a visit to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Perhaps it has not been announced for security reasons (highly possible) or perhaps it has not been announced because Obama has NO plans to visit either nation (also possible).

If the later, I suggest this is a HUGE mistake: He is running for Commander in Chief a title which refers to the President's role in heading up the US Armed Forces.

A candidate who refuses to consider the situation on the ground, or at least TALK TO those on the ground, shows poor judgment as a leader.

The audacity of arrogance! Imagine - taking a European Vacation (with a side trip to Iraq and Afghanistan because McCain shamed him into it, and why not throw in a few other Middle-East Countries for good measure!) while most of America is suffering because of the economy, high gas prices and other prices! Sure, Obama will hit it off in Europe - he thinks he is European. Wonder if he is going to take a crash course in German and French so he does not embarrass us by just saying "Marci beaucoup" and "Danka"! Lol! The man wants to be a Rock Star as well as POTUS. Wake up, America!

Obama will not speak at the Brandenberg Gate because that created much controversy in Germany. He did not decided not to speak there because he did not believe that was the right thing to do. He's too egotistical for that. He wanted to be JFK again and speak at that Gate until the Germans started their opposition to his doing so. Now Obama is trying to put the spin on what he's not speaking there. He's a big piece of crap.

I hope the Europeans are as bored with him as millions of us are.

Powell supports Obama, what is your point?

Posted by: Jane Hussein | Jul 18, 2008 5:44:33 PM

The arrogant audacity of "presumptive Democratic nominee" Barack Obama continues. How many foreign languages does Obama speak? Since he wrongly chastied Americans for lacking multiple language skills when they travel abroad, can we assume that Obama will be speaking to everyone in other countries in their native language? LOL! Obama has not even mastered the English language as of yet.

The Obamarama has been a media driven illusion. The media will NOT decide this election, the people will.

WHY are the three "major" (I use that term loosely) network anchors (INCLUDING ABC''s Charlie Gibson) going to Europe to cover the Obama visit? They have not gone with McCain on his trips abroad. The unfair media bias continues. It's appalling.

Obama is neither qualified or electable.

The Democrats are foolish if they nominate Obama.

The most qualified and most electable candiate is Hillary Clinton. The superdelegates, who will decide on the nominee and vote in late August in Denver at the DNC convention have a responsibility to nominate the most electable candidate. That candidate is an shall remain Hillary Clinton. Hillary has already won the popular vote by winning MORE votes than ANY candidate of ANY party in history! Wow, Hillary ROCKS!

If the Dems remain foolish and nominate Obama, put your country first and party second and vote for John McCain in 08 and Hillary in 2012.

I thought men held grudges but the looney HRC supporters have to take the cake on this one. Some of them don't even act old enough to vote. LOL!!! It's ok you'll get over it and even if you don't most of america could care less! LOL!!!
There will never be pres. HRC never!
