Obama’s Iraq Quagmire

July 03, 2008 4:40 PM

FROM GUEST-BLOGGER RICK KLEIN, from ABC's The Note.

There’s been lots of speculation this week about whether Sen. Barack Obama has an Iraq problem. He does now.

His comments Thursday, saying that he will “continue to refine” his plan to withdraw combat troops from Iraq inside of 16 months, seems likely to leave the campaign on the defensive on this issue for days or weeks.

And it increases the likelihood that his trip to Iraq later this month will not turn out like Obama wants it to.

There will be only one relevant question now out of Obama’s trip now: Do you stand by your plan? Obama is unlikely to give a direct, yes-or-no answer -- and that’s where Sen. John McCain and his allies can and will pounce.

Obama has almost always built in some wiggle room into his proposal -- including promises to consult with commanders on the ground -- but surely not always. For point of reference, go to Obama’s own campaign Website:

“Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda.”

That’s pretty unequivocal.

Obama’s migration to the political center has been well-documented, and is already a frame McCain is building around his candidacy. But Iraq -- this is qualitatively different, an issue that lives on a higher plane, since opposing the war was the rationale for his candidacy in the first place.

OK...so Obama is now 'refining' his position on Iraq, like he 'refined' his position about accepting public campaign funds, 'refined' his membership to his church, etc..etc...etc (& I voted for the guy). Change??? Where???
What a disappointment...

Obama doesnt seem to understand that we didn't care about him as a person, we cared about his ideas. Now that they have completely changed, I just feel regret, because I now don't care about Obama at all, and realize I should have voted for Hillary.

I made a mistake, so I apologize Hillary supporters. I let my idealism run away with me, again.

Now that the libs can not deny the Progress in Iraq, are they going to credit Pres. Bush with achieving it?

Posted by: spock | Jul 7, 2008 12:24:45 PM

"And it increases the likelihood that his trip to Iraq later this month will not turn out like Obama wants it to."

Barack Obama just wanted to inform a future meeting with General Petraeus when he said "to talk to some of the commanders on the ground".

This win-win move is designed to stop the criticism by the McCain camp and conservatives claiming the so call "willingness to meet Iran President" while he (Obama) has not met the US commander in Iraq the last 2 years.

"I wasn't saying anything I hadn't said before, that I didn't say a year ago or when I was a United States senator," said Obama, who is still a senator from Illinois.

God help us, the megalomaniacal mobster thinks he IS president. ANYbody else: vote for ANYbody else.

You people keep talking about dead american soldiers in Iraq. While one to too many, I wish to remind you of all the democratic presidents that started wars.
WWI - Wilson
WWII - Roosevelt
Korea - Truman over 50,000 dead
Vietnam - Johnson over 57,000 dead
What was accomplished in Vietnam and Korea? American troops are still in the Phillipines and Cuba since the Spanish-American War, in Europe since WWII etc. Saw Ted Koppel on one of the Sunday programs. He said that there will be over 80,000 troops in Iraq from at least 6 more years and Obama has known that from the beginning.

So which one of Bush's "failed policies" is gun-loving-faith-based-wire-tapping-free-trade-no-withdrawl-without-victory-Obama going to change? Oh, that's right: no new oil, and much higher taxes. Change we can believe in, I'd say.

I've adopted a plan put forward by some poster here: whenever the name "Obama" comes out of the television, I turn it off.

Why vote for a corporate mobster with no backbone -- because he's cute-looking and part "black"? This really is racism at its foulest and most dangerous.

SOME folks counsel a voters' strike to deal with the "phenomenon" thrust upon us by the media and the corporate collaborators in the Democratic "leadership". Some counsel a vote for Nader or McKinney.

I'm leaning, myself, to never voting again -- but I darn sure won't vote for this over-hyped bucket-of-warm-spit.

Let's see...

Redefining a plan...

If John McCain was to "redefine a plan," the Democrat hacks would call it a flip flop...

Which it would be...

Barack "Flip Flop" Obama...

Has a nice ring to it...

love how biased abc is right now

lol no correction no update...

i wonder why?

mccain would have gotten an immediate update... the media wants this race to be close and exciting like the primary was, but the simple fact that mccain sucks makes it hard to really keep this thing close...

so why not just continue to rumor mill going on obama

Posted by: bhrandon | Jul 4, 2008 12:19:49 PM

Hey Rick...

Why no update? Why no correction? You got this way wrong. But don't feel bad, so did most mainstream news outlets. But to absolutely fail to correct your reporting is malpractice.

Posted by: Stephen | Jul 4, 2008 12:05:10 PM

A lot of us wished Bush would have "redefined his plan," rather than decisively plunging the nation into the disaster of the Iraq war. Maybe we need to redefine some attributes of the commander in chief to include caution in foreign affairs, particularly when it comes to jumping into a war. The Iraq war conditions aren't predictable and withdrawal judgements need to take that into consideration.

OBAMA will GIVE US DEFEAT from the jaws of VICTORY as he pulls out of Iraq just before Victory.

Posted by: DemocratNoMore2 | Jul 4, 2008 10:49:32 AM

This latest chapter in "The Obama Flip-Flops" is one that will haunt his campaign drastically until November. Obama has flat-out lied to America about his stance on Iraq by promising them, not refining, that he would begin bringing the troops home immdediately. Now, he said this without visiting Iraq, consulting General Patreus, or any other official's expertise on the war. This just goes to show that Obama has and is pandering for votes all along, he says what he thinks America wants to hear, and then when they are hooked, he reels them in to be netted in his lies and uncertainty. McCain, on the other hand, is now stating and has always stated that there is no way the troops would be brought home immediately. Obama supporters, say what you want, but McCain took a stand on Iraq and continues to support his stand. Obama, on the other hand, the ultimate flip-flopper has not idea what Iraq is about. This latest chapter in Obama's campaign will hurt him more than you think. Spin it anyway you want, but he's not fooling America anymore with his pandering and lies!

Posted by: Will | Jul 4, 2008 9:55:51 AM

I have a hard time discerning whether I'm listening to George Bush or Barack Obama on Iraq. It seems that Obama is sounding more like Bush every day. Obama is trying to twinst the meaning of the term "refining" his way yet again. What "refining" actually means to Obama, is another "flip-flop". In the primaries, in interview after interview, Obama stated he would have the troops home in 2009. McCain, Patreus, and many others told him this would not be possible, but Obama, in his arrogant self, would not listen. Now Obama is having to "crawfish" and agree with them, only he is trying to spin it his way. People say if McCain is elected, its 4 more years of Bush, but, the way its shaping up, it looks like if Obama is elected, the Bush years will continue. Will someone remind me, is Obama a democrat or a republican? He changes his mind daily, so I'm not sure anymore.

I miss Hillary. Now we've got two REALLY bad candidates to choose from. Thanks Moveon.org! I hope you guys feel used! Obama.. no experience, flip flopper, to liberal.. and McCain.. old as dirt, a GOPer that will continue the Bush era of disaster, knows nothing about economics.

Geez, which of these fools do you vote for? Can I have a door #3? Maybe I'll just write Hillary in.

Posted by: tr | Jul 4, 2008 4:52:36 AM

What was that about Obama's "Judgment to Lead"

If Obama had such good judgment he would have judged the surge would work and he should have had the judgment to figure it out LONG ago.

McCain was one of the first to suggest the surge and deemed we needed to stay the course after the surge had begun. We are now on the verge of VICTORY, in part it is due to McCain's judgment and dispite of Obama's LACK of judgment!

McCain is the only one in this race that has the "Judgment to Lead".

Win or lose, Obama is condescending. All he does is say "let me be perfectly clear" when he shifts his position 45 degrees or so. Too clever by half in my book.

This time he admonished, "let's try this again" as if people were just too dense to get his nuanced position.

Posted by: Wade | Jul 4, 2008 12:26:10 AM

I remember Obama months ago saying that he would always reserve the right to make changes based on the situation on the ground. This is nothing new. And I don't believe his commitment to ending the war has changed one bit.

All he is saying is we should apply common sense and fact based sound judgement to decision making in Iraq - not merely base it on ideology.

...But naturally the press go crazy; this is way too complicated for a journalist to comprehend.

Eyes Wide Open

As I posted earlier, the press corps functions as a herd. I watched Obama's press conference without a print or broadcast blooger filtering it and telling me how to interpret what I just heard with my own ears and witnessed with my own eyes...wide open by the way.

Obama's policy has not changed. But that doesn't give the herd anything to file for the next news cycle.

Posted by: ricky | Jul 3, 2008 9:46:57 PM

I feel as if I have been "bait and switched" by Obama. During the primaries, I actually believed he was not your "typical" politician, but he will say and do whatever it takes to get elected.

His about face on Iraq is all the proof I need. He promised public financing to get special interests out of politics and he turned on that; he said NAFTA was wrong and now he has backed away from that stand; he was a supporter of the DC gun ban now he says it was a mistake, and today he said mental health should not be a reason for abortion even though he voted for mental health exceptions as a senator.

Enough - I am bummed but I am now voting for the only "honest" candidate.

Go Nader 2008

It's not really fair to hold BO to anything regarding Iraq at this point.
1 - The entire Iraq issue is an intangible issue to him. To-date, he's talking 'in theory'.
2 - HRC isn't around for him to copy from.
3 - The teleprompters may have been mal-functioning earlier when he made his comments in ND.

Posted by: FishMonger | Jul 3, 2008 9:19:06 PM

By the way dear readers, in case you missed it, in other blogs in this series:

McCain kicked his campaign manager upstairs (the baseball equivalent of moving the losing skipper "to the front office") and Rick Klein says this is good news for McCain.

Obama gives a speech on volunteerism, and Klein used it to recycle month old comments from Bill Kristol about how Obama did not mention military service in a previous speech on the topic.

McCain gave an interview with Robin Roberts in which McCain for the second time denied on live television ever saying he was not an expert on the economy, and Klein covered the interview without mentioning this bald face (Tape at eleven) lie.

So, do you believe Klein when he says Obama has changed his policy on Iraq?

Posted by: ricky | Jul 3, 2008 9:18:50 PM

Barack Obama was saying things about Iraq when he hadn't been there for over 14 months. Now he wnats to wait until after his Iraq visit to change his position? It was the McCain camp who made it an issue for Obama to visit Iraq. Now that he is changign his position on keepign the troops in, I'm happy. The surge is working. Both Barack Obama and George Bush was against the surge. It's great that Bush decided to suppor MCain and go ahead with the surge. Barack Obama is not only a typical politician, he is an Impressionist.

Posted by: Anon 1 | Jul 3, 2008 9:16:06 PM

From the ABC debate:

GIBSON: And, Senator Obama, your campaign manager, David Plouffe, said, "When he is" -- this is talking about you -- "When he is elected president, we will be out of Iraq in 16 months at the most. There should be no confusion about that."

So you'd give the same rock-hard pledge, that no matter what the military commanders said, you would give the order to bring them home?

OBAMA: Because the commander-in-chief sets the mission, Charlie.

That's not the role of the generals.

And one of the things that's been interesting about the president's approach lately has been to say, "Well, I'm just taking cues from General Petraeus."

Well, the president sets the mission. The general and our troops carry out that mission...

...Now, I will always listen to our commanders on the ground with respect to tactics, once I've given them a new mission, that we are going to proceed deliberately, in an orderly fashion, out of Iraq, and we are going to have our combat troops out.

Posted by: Heywood U. Reedmore | Jul 3, 2008 9:12:21 PM

Rick Klein, in this blog, reports this:

"There will be only one relevant question now out of Obama’s trip now: Do you stand by your plan? Obama is unlikely to give a direct, yes-or-no answer -- and that’s where Sen. John McCain and his allies can and will pounce."

He will say I stand by my goal and yes...I plan on taking out troops one or two brigades at a time"

Just as he said today.

and then the press I would hope turn to McCain and say "what is your plan?"

and his plan will have nothing about getting us out.

Posted by: dl | Jul 3, 2008 8:52:28 PM

This is so petty. Stirring the pot. What's McCain's plan? He wants to win the war. Well, we all know that's impossible. We started the war, we should end it. Who cares whether it's 12 months or 18 months, just do it.And when you get to the white house, do a little cleaning on the hill.

Posted by: Bea | Jul 3, 2008 8:51:25 PM

Heywood U. Reedmore

did you read the quote from the Russert questions...those are the same from the cnn questions almost word for word...

it is the same thing I have heard him say over and over.

what happened was he said he is still working on the plan...

the press jumped all over it because they took that as he was changing the 16 month goal...

he had to come back out but articles like the one above went to print...
and say..."I am still planning on 16 months"

but also that he has ALWAYS said and I have heard him in many rooms say the same thing whether it be a living room in Exeter nH or a gym at a middle school in Hampton or a coffeehouse in Portsmouth...

the same thing...he will not promise 16 months...but that is his goal and he has not seen anything that changes that YET.

He said that in the spring of 2007.
He said that on the Russert question.

he has said that over and over

Posted by: dl | Jul 3, 2008 8:49:16 PM

Newscaper

His position has been consistent...he will remove the troops and it has to do with safety of the troops as we pull out...

do you realize how long it probably will take before all the insurgents who joined up for the movement find out the positions with power and money they were promised when we eventually leave won't exist...ever.

and whenever the US pulls out it's going to be messy...whether it is next year or five years from now... those same tribes are going to have centuries of thoughts of the other tribes...and be jilted of promises that can't be fulfilled...

and in 5-10 years years that will be how many more trillions from our budget?

Posted by: dl | Jul 3, 2008 8:43:15 PM

Obama had said on multiple occasions that if the generals told him we needed to stay in Iraq, he would not let that change his policies because "the President sets the mission." Before he said he'd listen to them for advice on tactics on how best to withdraw our forces. Now he's saying he'll listen to the generals and revise his policies. He's not exactly backtracking on his withdrawal policy (yet?) but he definitely seems to be creating the space to do so later.

Posted by: Heywood U. Reedmore | Jul 3, 2008 8:40:16 PM

I cannot BELIEVE people who disagreed with Obama's "Retreat at any price" campaigning are will to give him a pass on it if he now finesses his Iraq position to avoid political suicide as things continue to improve.

Sure, you can say that "It's a *good* thing that he's willing to change his position based on facts" but the fact is this -- he will NOT say he was wrong about Iraq *before*. "Things have changed since then."

BS!
His meta-position then boils down to "I'm for cutting and running when things are tough, and I'm for staying the course and winning when its going well."

The first half of that means that the latter half can never be reached.

Is *that* leadership?

HoosierSue he has said 16 months since he was campaigning in NH.

He has said over and over 16 months with advice and taking a look at the status quo.

Go read a statement...over and over he has said this for a year.

but lets go back a year and a half and not change a plan...oh that's right that would be Bush...and now McCain

the only 2 reasons the sons of iraq joined up was because obama said we were leaving and they know a change is coming as reported by several people on the ground including reporters like richard Engel...

and they have been promised positions with power and money...

of course there are only 1 of those position to every three sons of iraq that signed up...

so tell me what do you think is McCain's plan.

Obama's has stayed consistent...16 months is the goal...and actually listen...but unlike McCain

the goal is to get US money and soldiers back to the US...

McCain doesn't worry about that as much as going to war with Iran.

Which he has hinted at and talked about almost as much as obama has said 16 months with change of pace depending on the ground.

but you keep fighting that really smart fight and spin half sentences and unformulated plans...from before he started running. lol

Funny how Obama's followers painted Hillary as a serial liar but don't seem to be able to see the lies upon lies coming from Obama. Oh wait a minute, that's not really funny at all is it? Just sad.

Posted by: HoosierSue | Jul 3, 2008 8:27:55 PM

I watched Obama's press conferences today. His policy has not changed. The only people saying they have are the press, who function like a herd. If one reporter breathlessly leads with "Obama is changing his policy," they all scramble to follow so they won't be scooped.

Those of you who say you support Obama but are getting tired of reading that he has changed his views better start complaining to the press, because they are the ones who cannot be trusted to tell you the truth.

The press theme in 2000 was Al Gore was a liar who made stuff up about himself.
It turnmed out the press made most of the stories up, not Gore. When the real lying started by Bush, the press rolled over and played dead. Now 4,000 plus American soldiers are dead.

The press theme in 2004 was Kerry is a flip flopper, Now they are so lazy they cannot even be clever enough to come up with a new theme. So they are combining 2000 and 2004. If they cannot find a real flip flop they will invent one. That is what Obama's "changing" Iraqw policy is all about.

Meanwhile, the Republican candidate flat out lies and the media ignores it.
Check out how ABC ignored John McCain lying about statements he made about his lack of expertise on the economy.
He told his lie on their network and they ignored it.

dl that's the problem Obama has - people like me HAVE been listening to what he's said throughout this campaign, straight from his own mouth. No media spin there. He's a liar plain and simple and everyone who's wrapped their hopes and dreams up in the Great Obama Movement have been had.

Posted by: HoosierSue | Jul 3, 2008 8:26:02 PM

hoosiersue

he is not fliflopping...show me a statement out of his mouth that is not consistent with what he is saying.

You listen to half of his sentences...and then say oh... he's flip-flopping...

no

again go look at every video /soundbite on him talking about Iraq...

he has said the same thing...

what happened was the press (especially ABC and Fox...NBC and CNN say that these statements were consistent with what he has said in the past duh) jumped on his first statement because he did not say 16 months...kind of like they did with that stupid"ignore the kids fist bump malarkey"...

and so he cam back out and said...I am still planning on getting them out in 16 months....

but as I have always said I will listen to how to do that from the people on the ground... he has consistently said this was not a promise to remove them in 16 months...that would be stupid and "irresponsible"...his words.

So the new line is, Obama's not an Idealist he's a Pragmatist!

The Hope and Change Pragmatist?

Practical on FISA, Practical on Iraq, Practically a Republican.

Posted by: wlpeak | Jul 3, 2008 8:13:51 PM

Actually dl, Obama initially said he'd have all the troops out within one year - then moved it back to 16-18 months, now he won't be held to a timeline, tomorrow... your guess is as good as mine.

Posted by: HoosierSue | Jul 3, 2008 8:12:24 PM

Obama gave his withdrawal timetable to lure the libs to him, NOW IS IS INDEED BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE - SINCE IRAQ NOW IS MORE SAFE THAN CHICAGO, PEOPLE MOVING BACK, AIRLINE STARTING UP AGAIN, THINGS RETURNING TO VIVILITY. A LITTLE EMBARRASING FOR OBAMA? I THINK SO

Posted by: Manitu | Jul 3, 2008 8:11:35 PM

This July 4th We give a shout out to not only our Troops in Iraq, but also the 29,978 US wounded and Over 40,000 to 70,000 are with post traumatic stress, many who will be marching in Tomorrows Fourth of July parades arcross the country.

I wanted to share this -

Obama says America's veterans deserve better. Posted by Scott Helman, Political Reporter.

In a speech in Fargo, N.D., Obama touted his work in the Senate on veterans issues and pledged to do better by them if he becomes president. He reiterated earlier vows to improve the Veterans Affairs system with more funding, end homelessness among veterans, and pay appropriate attention to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

Honoring American ideals, Obama said, "requires more than saluting our veterans as they march by in a 4th of July parade. It requires only sending them to war when we must, and giving them the equipment they need to complete their mission safely. It requires giving them the care and benefits they have earned. And it requires standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our veterans and their families after the guns fall silent and the cameras are turned off."

Obama cited what he called "deplorable conditions" at military facilities such as Fort Bragg and Walter Reed, and the "broken bureaucracy of the VA."

"It doesn't have to be this way. Not in this country," he said, according to prepared remarks. "There are many aspects of the war in Iraq that have gone inalterably wrong, but caring for our veterans is one thing we can still get right."

Obama DID NOT FLIP FLOP on this...he is saying the same things he said all along...where is this coming from.

Go look at his statements at 3 different debates.

Go look at what he said consistently in NH.

He said...he said the goal was 16 months...still is... the plan which he said would be tweaked up until the last minute.

duh that is what smart Presidents do...

McCain has NO PLAN...none.

Posted by: dl | Jul 3, 2008 8:02:46 PM

Obama will Flip-Flop himself into oblivion.

McCain will be president in November while Obama will wind up nothing more than a Trivial Pursuit question once the elections are wrapped up!

Posted by: PK | Jul 3, 2008 7:54:19 PM

Joshua Batterson

There is no spin to this...Obama supporters are trying to stop the same spin that got GW Bush in office.

OBama has been consistent on the goal and that the plan is maliable the way it should be... but the goal has stayed the same.

the spin is that he isn't going to focus on getting us out.

that is just stupid.

Posted by: dl | Jul 3, 2008 7:48:45 PM

Would you rather he say "I don't care what the generals say from the ground, the troops are leaving within the first 16 months of my presidency"

There will be a withdrawal but it must be consistent with what the generals are saying from the ground. This is not a flip-flop. It's being practical and responsible.

Obama suddenly realizes he cannot deliver on his promise. To do so would be devastating for Iraq and for the war against terror.

Obama is in a dilemma.

rODNEY..

"changing your mind on something due to changing facts makes you very wise"

Then I guess Senator McCain is very very wise...... AND experienced.!

A good package to vote for!

di---you will see more of this crap as the repubs are try franticly to change their image---- and a few dummys will fall for it.

Obama says, "I am for it while I am against it."

Posted by: maggie | Jul 3, 2008 7:30:33 PM

Obama's "consistency" on all issues is laughable, seeing as he has absolutely no consistency on any policy, and continues to say one thing to one group of people, while sucking up to the real power in Washington, the neocons. I also enjoy how many pro-Obama people are on here blogging to try and spin this. Sorry, Obama has thrown the progressive cause under the bus with his flip-flop on FISA, Iraq withdrawl, and his fake housing plan. Get a clue America, John McCain and Barack Obama are the same candidate. You've been bamboozled.
